Radio Feedback Thread
barrucadu · 2017-04-25 03:55
I'm running the current lainchan radio stream, so if you have any feedback (or requests), put them here.
I've added a little music since setting up, and also changed how the scheduling is done. If anyone has any strong opinions on that, I'd appreciate hearing. It used to be totally random, now it schedules four-hour slots consisting of:
1. A transition ("you're listening to lainchan radio", "hack the planet!", "present day, present time, ahahahaha", etc)
2. A complete album
3. Enough tracks to make up the difference
4. Another complete album
I decided to try this out because listening to complete albums is nice, but variety is also nice.
Cutter · 2017-04-25 06:08
Add this album please?

please less daft punk
It seems like there has always been a disproportionate amount of daft punk

is there a complete list of what's running on there or is it always changing? I want to suggest some things but I figure it'd be easier to know what's already there so I don't suggest duplicates.
barrucadu · 2017-04-25 22:17
Now with pretty graphs: https://lainon.life/graphs/dashboard/db/lainon-life
>>70
Done. I also added "Frozen in Motion" and "Patterns & Light".
>>75
There's 470888s of audio in total, of which 15718s is Daft Punk. I'll keep an eye (ear?) on the stream, but I don't think I've noticed a disproportionate amount so far.
>>77
Here you go: https://lainon.life/file-list/everything.html (or plaintext: https://lainon.life/file-list/everything.txt)
The "old" directory is stuff from the old radio which I'm planning on going through and correcting artist/album tags. Although, it's all in the playlist as the moment too.
Technician · 2017-04-25 22:34
Would it be possible to add the albums Sweety Sweety by Snail's House and Storyteller by Ujico*?

you're the greatest Barack. thanks.
Perro vagabundo · 2017-04-26 02:28
Will the radio always have exclusively electronic music, techno or whatever you call it?

Done

One idea we've been tossing around is to have multiple "channels", where the lainchan radio page has a drop-down list to change channel. I already have such a list on lainon.life, but there's only one entry so far. I imagine the default channel will always be this sort of music, but I definitely want to add (for example) a swing/jazz channel.
Anamika · 2017-04-26 08:15

Hey
thank you for this. This music is great.

Maybe I just get unlucky and happen to always tune in when daft punk comes up.
May I request this be added?

Thanks
barrucadu · 2017-04-26 13:55
The radio now has multiple channels!
There are currently three channels: "everything" (should be fairly self-explanatory), "cyberia" (the channel played on lainchan.org), and "swing" (brand new: swing, electroswing, and jazz). There isn't a channel selector on lainchan.org/radio yet, so if you want to try it out you'll have to use lainon.life/radio.html for now.
In addition to making a new channel, I've also been downloading a load of new music. The music collection I inherited had 1400 files, I've since added another 700. File list is updated, and I've queued up some of the new albums over the next few hours.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Trinity · 2017-04-26 17:57
I think It would be cool to have community members read out the some of the track names as a volunteer kinda deal. (like release a dumb of all the tracks and you can just submit a voice line when ever you felt like it for a random or specific one you liked.) maybe that's not as cool as I think it would be and kinda redundant because you can just look at what is playing on the web page but still... might make the radio feel more community oriented or something idk

Wow thanks a lot. Lainchan radio is now twice as awesome. Take this lain that I use when I can't listen to lainchan radio.

awesome I didn't even know about lainon.life
Maybe we should have some community sets once in a while I'm sure we have some DJs here who would like to. I DJ a bit but I need more practice before I'd be ready to do a proper set
Erik Johansson · 2017-04-26 20:20
I'm listening to the radio (the one on the lainchan links) and some mins ago there was a... something saying something about that anyone can free the data, but what matters is how you do it and why, and that data was only 1s and 0s and soykaf and I loved it.
It obviously wasn't part of the song that was being streamed at the time.
Where is it from?
barrucadu · 2017-04-27 05:28
>>100
I think that's a pretty fun idea. I've added an upload form at https://lainon.life/voice.html, linked from https://lainon.life/radio.html
>>103
That's entirely possible. It's just a collection of icecast streams with a pretty front-end, after all.
>>104
It's one of the transitions that plays roughly every 4 hours. It's in the files I inherited; I'm not sure where it's originally from. Someone might even have made it for the radio.
Perro vagabundo · 2017-04-27 11:08

You sure are dedicated, thanks a lot!
Pulse · 2017-04-27 12:03
I've been tuning in over the last year especially from my phone - thanks for the service I've looked into ice cast myself and found it a bit confusing to say the least so I think you've done well keeping it up for this long. My only request would be more cyber sessions, and when we have some trance/beat kind of music happening I enjoy making art to that so can we hear more?
Y.T · 2017-04-27 20:00
Genuinely curious, why is XSPF considered harmful (as stated on the radio page)? I haven't found anything that speaks against it on the internet so far
Celt.does.Radio. · 2017-04-27 20:40
Really glad to see this major update/overhaul to the radio. Seems like an improvement.
If you're tagging stuff/going through the playlist, keep an eye out for the weird amount of funk someone dumped into the system which really doesn't have a cyberpunk flavour to it.
Another thing you might want to examine is the amount of Giorgio Moroder which was dumped into the playlist. A cynic might suggest that's mainly because of the rub Daft Punk gave him. Most of his music, while synth heavy, is really more disco based and, in my opinion, not really that cyberpunk, which is a heavier, less pop based sound.

>Where is it from?
It's audio from the complete edition (Planetary Pack) of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.Specifically it's the leader of the "Data Angels" faction Sinder Roze. When you unlock technology in Alpha Centauri, there'd be accompanying audio like that where different in game leaders reflect on the technology from their philosophical view point.
Sinder and the Data Angels are (obviously) a pro-freedom of information, pro-technology group. I edited it to have some appropriate background music as well.

One other thing: You might want to double check it's shuffling correctly. I'm listening it right now and it just played 4 Prodigy tracks back to back.
H.R. Giger · 2017-04-27 21:03
Im real glad to see the radio is back, i havent had time yet to listen to it much so i cant comment on the changes yet.
But i will once i have a solid oppionon and i have some track suggestions i will post some other time.

thnx barrucadu, i'm not 100% sure if this is how it used to work but the main volafile room's greeting message said it was for uploading tracks to be included on radio, will that be returning? vola seems to be down atm..
Meddler · 2017-04-28 15:03
It would be nice, if the player would fit in.
Is the source somewhere?
I would like to volunteer for that.
barrucadu · 2017-04-28 16:18
>>114
I did have it set up to play two complete albums in every four-hour slot, with the rest being random. But now I've changed it to only one complete album in every three-hour slot, with the rest random, as it felt too much.
>>124
Probably not, I'm not really a regular user of volafile.

Knock yourself out: https://github.com/barrucadu/lainonlife
Regarding javascript: the page currently works even if javascript is disabled (you just get a message telling you to turn it on), it'd be nice to keep that. So in practice that means that without javascript, the default player should be used.
Regarding CSS: fonts and colours go in cyber.css (so in principle a new theme could be produced fairly easily), more "layout"y things go in style.css

I'm so glad Lain Radio is back. Thank you. I'm really enjoying the new swing station.
You should add a convenient way to request/suggest music on the radio page.
