Funny books

Mitnick · 2022-08-26 22:33
In this thread post some funny books and say what is in your opinion the funniest book you’ve read. I would say the the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, is the funniest book in my opinion. Also don quixote was pretty funny.

>>8105 I started reading those when I was 10, then read them as an adult. When you're a kid they are funny because you don't know what he's referring to so it's just absurd; as an adult they are funny in entirely different ways because you DO get it now, especially if you've done any hitch hiking, any drugs etc. Every time I am standing in a lineup, having a stand off with some bureaucrat or filling out forms I remember and think "oh this is what he was talking about". The best example... he tries lying in the mud to stop a bulldozer right at the beginning. It didn't work when me and my friends tried it either. Sorry I didn't think of anything to answer your query OP, I'll come back when I do.

>>8106 >I started reading _those_ it's some kind of series? i just thought it was one book.
Unidentified · 2022-08-26 22:48
>>8107 There are five books in the trilogy. It was originally a BBC radio play, there was a different audio version on LP, an eight part TV miniseries, a text adventure (from Infocom who were the originators of Zork) and I think I'm forgetting something... oh there was a big hollywood film made of the first book. I thought it could be better it could also have been far worse Douglas wrote non-fiction too, he became concerned with ecology and endangered species. He also performed live with Pink Floyd once. He was a personal hero of mine.

>>8106 I also read all the books when I was around that age, this made me want to read them again

Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut is a good funny book. I've never read Hitchhiker's Guide but I was recommended it when I mentioned Breakfast of Champions to someone, so maybe you'll like it too. Candide by Voltaire was good when I was younger and edgy. An annotated version is recommended, since it's satire that works best with knowledge of the events it was satirizing.

I just read the first Discworld book. Parts of it made me legitimately laugh out loud. Looking forward to reading all of them.

>>8131 Found a few brand new Discworld books in my small local library. Started with "Guards! Guards!" and will continue with the series. It's a neverending satire, quite entertaining.

Digital Fortress by Dan Brown I couldn't stop laughing
Zero Cool · 2022-09-21 21:04
>>8131 >discworld fuarrrking this. The discworld books have to be the most humorous books I've ever read.
Lady Jessica · 2022-09-21 21:43
>>8105 I found Infinite Jest pretty funny. Something about the nauseous level of hyperrealism, especially in dialogue.
Wintermute · 2022-09-22 06:09
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson is like a book-adaption of those libertarian greentexts within a cyberpunk world.
Jet Black · 2022-09-22 15:11
>>8164 TRIVIA: The reason it reads the way it does, present tense and rapid fire short sentences, is that he started to write a graphic novel and for whatever reason changed it. It's one of a kind, even his other books aren't much like it.
Hiro Protagonist · 2022-09-23 02:11
>>8167 Interesting, i know the story went through many different forms during its creation, i think Neal has said that he wrote more lines of code than text during the development.

Ranma 1/2 not really a book but still

Confederacy of Dunces: The original man-child /b/tard. This soykaf had me laughing my ass off. Story of how it got published it pretty cool too. A Boy and his Dog took me like 5 minutes to understand what happened when I finished it. I walked away confused, went to smoke a cigarette, and when the realization of what the main character did at the end hit me I probably woke the neighbors up. Maybe not supposed to be funny but hey. >>8164 The opening rant at the beginning of Snow Crash was enough to make me love that book.
Metadata Robber · 2022-10-03 16:38
Love this soykaf when i was a teenager, Bukowski is certainly one of the greatest writers of his time, the way he describes all the scum and loathness of the 40-50s through a degenerated but extremely conscious perspective its priceless, if you like cynical plots and pseudo-nihilistic themes you should read at least one book of him

Went on a bit of a humour binge, I'd say my favs were Terry Pratchett and Kurt Vonnegut. Both consistently have me laughing out loud. Pale Fire was also fuarrrking hilarious in a much more literary sense.
Acid Burn · 2023-04-08 15:28
Master and Margarita is the only book I have ever laughed aloud at. It was funny
Jane Doe · 2023-04-29 18:43

I have read most of the books listed above but I didn't find them very funny. Is it just me that thinks that books as a medium are not very funny? It just seems like the authors are being random/absurd.

>>8876 Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Additionally, humor is a sociocultural thing. If you grow up or develop in isolation from your neighborhood, your hood's jokes won't strike you as funny. Substitute neighborhood for sex/gender, sexuality, city, country, continent. Try and try again. That aside, your sense of humor may be personal, or unrefined, if you've not had much dealings with it. Try, for example, the two volumes of best funny short story anthologies editted by Mike Resnik "This Is My Funniest"; try absurdish comedy like Christopher Moore; try compendiums of puns; I don't read much funnies, but I recall "100 Animals That Can F*cking End You" by Mamadou Ndiaye as being funny, done in modern urban black American cant.
Spike Spiegel · 2023-05-01 01:29
>>8798 I recommend the short stories (feuilletons) by Bulgakov. White guard is pretty funny too at times.
