My love for fantasy keeps growing. Authors like Robert E Howard and Tolkien and E. R. Eddison wrote out of boundless respect for adventure and nature and storytelling itself. Does anyone know of contemporary authors that capture the same magic? Either way let's talk about our favorite sword and sorcery or high fantasy stories.

This stuff is not even high fantasy, it's the epic fantasy cathegory.

I thought they were the same thing. Maybe I should not have brought up subgenres at all.

Earthsea and The Lyonesse Trilogy should be on your list next

Don't take the bait. Something can be epic, high, or both. Tolkien is definitely both. You also specified "contemporary" though and I can't help you there.

I'm nearly finished with the second book of Book of the New Sun. Just bizarre. I thought things would have started becoming a bit more coherent this far in.

Finished my reread of LotR (it's better than I remembered) and reading the Silmarilion now. These elves are hard to keep track of. You can tell it was assembled from scattered notes. Not bad but probably skippable.

Those both look right up my alley, added to the list.

Don't know if it qualifies, but The Black Company definitely is my favourite fantasy novel. I obviously recommend it, even if it isn't for everyone.

Funny, for me it was almost the opposite, I read the Silmarillion first, and while the first ~quarter of the book was a bit hard to follow, I found it more engaging than LoTR.
