Hi Lain. Can you recommend me some relatively short mystery/detective novels? The most obvious would be the ones from the Sherlock Holmes series. I've read some of those, and I enjoyed them. But how about something more contemporary, thought-provoking, yet still with a dose of humor? What I definitely do not want is: heavy politics involved plots, dead serious narrative from the first to the last page, the lack of field work descriptions. Thanks in advance.

The Two Cities is pretty good. Ending was pretty funny.

That is a tall order, not sure you can find anything that also is contemporary. If you are willing to drop that part you cannot go wrong with Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries, or short story collections by DL Sawyers or Isaac Asimov.
