Manga general. Discuss, share, explore. If you want a recommendation then post three titles that you've liked and let other lainons guess your tastes
Just finished Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch and thoroughly enjoyed them. Looking for others that are similarly engaging and readable. Also need help finding more collections online as the private tracker I'm in is rather lacking in the manga category

Not a big manga reader but Chainsaw man was really cool.
Currently I'm kind of reading Made in Abyss but that's only because the anime lags behind (the anime is a scene to scene copy of the manga).
Made in Abyss is sick and perverted by the way but I guess that's a part of the author's vision.
I look forward to see lainons' recommendations since I don't read manga often.
John Rain · 2021-08-12 00:38
It's been a while since I've read any manga.
I'd like to recommend Onani Master Kurosawa to anyone who enjoys coming-of-age stories. It's only 30 chapters long, so definitely worth a try.
Chikan Otoko · 2021-08-13 08:39
I read loads of manga. Im not at my computer so i can't post a long list, but I recommended everyone who uses andriod to download Tachiyomi and use Mangadex.
Tomorrow I'll make a much better post.

Alright everybody. Let me expound upon you all my knowledge.
The best Manga I have read are:
Be-Bop Highschool
Old school manga about high school delinquents. They start out rough, but they all have a sweet side.
Half the chapters are about life, drama, and love. The other half are about kids beating each other bloody. Its fantastic.
Has a good message too. Criminally under read.
Golden Kamuy
The art is fantastic. The story is basically The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly but in Japan.
Three groups are out to find a hidden treasure trove of gold buried somewhere in Northern Japan. Theres a lot of blood, action, history, and the story is a great journey.
Its not as popular as One Piece or FullMetal Alchemist, but its along the same lines.
Easy recommendation.
Gokushufudou: Way of the House Husband
This one is a comedy. Well paced, good humor, great art, nothing to complain about.
The story is that a Yakuza member known for being unkillable falls for an office lady. She becomes the breadwinner as he becomes a house husband.
But how is a Yak gonna conform to normal life? How many references to murder can he make to the lady at the grocery store?
The Ride On King
This one has the best art out of the bunch. The artist normally does sports manga about kickboxing and martial arts, but they decided to do a comedy, so now everyone has fantastically overly elaborately drawn muscles. Even the dragons.
The comedy is pretty standard, but the worldbuilding is strangely good. In some chapters they forget that they're doing a gag manga and just start to explain the history of certain races and halfbreed monsters. I literally have no idea where this story is going, and I dont think the author does either.
Also, the main character is Putin. He gets Isekaid to fantasy land and decides to spend his time riding exotic animals. Great premise.
Hinamatsuri
One of the few comedy manga that had me laughing out loud.
The humor in this is well paced, well presented, and the writer constantly plays to his strengths.
Probably the second worst art, with the most stiffly drawn characters. Things look strangely off in this one, but the comedy plays well off of it anyway.
Story is that a girl comes back from the future and crashes in to a Yakuza members house. He's not the hardcore killing Yakuza, but the kind who actually makes them money by operating businesses.
He gets wrangled into becoming her adoptive father as other girls from the future come back to stop the first one.
The story gets thrown out for the bulk of the manga until the writer decided he wanted to wrap things up. Then the plot came right back until the ending.
Koe No Katachi
Wanna feel horrible about your life? Wanna cry?
Koe no Katachi, or A Silent Voice, or The Shape of Voice has been adapted into a movie, and a good one. But the movie cut out some stuff and the manga explains things better.
This one got me through some personal stuff so I gotta recommend it.
The story is about a kid who wants to kill himself, but before he does he wants to make sure that he leaves no loose ends behind. The only loose end he has left is this deaf girl he bullied in elementary school. He goes to apologize when he accidently tells the girl that he wants to see her again. She agrees and their shaky friendship starts. This one explores some darker themes and talks a lot about suicide and depression. Characters in this are just straight up mean spirited for no clear reason. Its a well done story, but a bit thick in some areas. I still love it.
Chikan Otoko (Molester Man)
Heres a manga that has no right to be as good as it is.
Based off of real events posted to 2chan, Chikan Otoko is about a man who gets mistaken as a molester by a girl who has had multiple stalkers. The Main character finds the girl cute so he agrees to help her out. They start to form a friendship and then things start to happen. I cant give it away.
But the story is pretty good, and it feels a lot more real than most. There are great dramatic twists in this one, although it is predominantly a comedy manga.
I was hooked on this one. The art style is pretty ok, not bad, but not good. It has a lot of charm. Clearly not done professionally.
If you only read one book on this list, I would say this is the one to read.
Also if you dont read Yotsuba, what are you doing with your life.

I like the setting of made in abyss a lot but i heard the abyss isn't really the focus, i that true?
Also how bad is the l*li soykaf (i don't care about the authors vision if the authors vision is exactly that)?

Different lainanon
The plot is a mix of the Abyss and the people in it. Its pretty good.
The author has his, ur, "interests", and you can notice them easy, but if you look past that, the story is fantastic

The story is really nice if you ignore all the perverted stuff. There's only occasional and subtle l*li garbage in the manga.
More often there's non-erotic gore and vore, some creatures living in the Abyss sometimes have organs similar to penises and pussies in strange places.
There are also occasional pissing and toilet motives.
Emmanuel · 2021-08-14 21:34
>>6770
To be honest after thinking for a while I'm not sure whether I can even describe that as l*li. I don't think that's really sexualization.
Riko was suspended naked under the ceiling by the orphanage's principal as a form of punishment.
It's l*li only as far as you're allowing it to be.

I have good memories of watching made in abyss on a car ride so I absolutely love the setting and such of it, also the art I absolutely love. The authors other works such as star strings and gears maiden capture some of that with how when there is a "foreign landscape" it isn't just earth stuff with a mask, it is something bizarre and new. Also the only thing I've found that matches the feel of MIA is houseki no kuni, but it doesn't have as good of a setting.
Lord Nikon · 2021-09-18 18:18
Chainsaw Man may be the best manga I've read in the last 10 years. Currently going through Fire Punch, soykaf makes CSM look vanilla as fuarrrk.
I'd recommend any of the works of Koji Kumeta, although my favorite is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Highly satirical, philosophical, and funny as all fuarrrk. It's hard to read for non-japanese people because of the amount of cultural references and dated jokes, but the overarching story and episodic jokes are still funny and worth the read, in my opinion.
Plus the ending is an absolute mind fuarrrk.
Other recommendations would be considered basic, but they're fun as fuarrrk. They're classics and everyone likes them because they're good
>Akira

Sorry for the double post, but I forgot to wage slave one of my favorite mangas ever.
>Melancholia by Dowman Sayman
An apparent story collection with no relation whatsoever until you realize everything is connected. Super stylized art style, godlike storytelling. Twists and turns everywhere.
Please read it, it's kinda obscure and I need more people to read it.

I read punpun, chainsaw man, and girls last tour recently, and holy fuarrrking soykaf punpun is a literary masterpiece. I absolutely loved CSM too, favorite shounen I've read in a long time. GLT is a whole other breed and was a very comfy read after the other two ripped my mind to shreds. Absolutely going to read the rest of Asano's work after having experienced this.

devils advocate here, that was a traditional form of punishment in japan IIRC
>[rope bondage] draws on Hojojutsu, a martial art used by the Samurai in Japan's Edo period (from 1603 to 1868) to restrain, transport, and often torture prisoners with rope or cords
Made in abyss does have some impressive world crafting. The artwork is also great. I just disregarded any of the l -li stuff.
There are 3 main story sections so far, one was adapted to the anime, one to a movie, and the third which has a lot of the backstory of the abyss, and also plenty of nightmare fuel. It is most definitely not suitable for children.
I read up to the last published chapter, but the story keeps leaving more questions with the world building that will hopefully be answered.
The dickbutt character is pretty likable to be honest
also one MC is confirmed to be a furry

7 seeds was really wonderful, I didn't read it for a long time because I heard mixed reviews of the anime not the best reason but whatever but I finally got around to reading it, and I really liked the story. It took years to complete the series, but the character development was wonderful, I watched the anime to compare, and it does not give the manga justice.

Doku Mushi

I'm looking for something that's kind of depressing in a comfortable way where the protagonist has had a miserable life and it delves into it. Not explicitly focused on romance but has it would be a nice addition. Stuff I've read that fits what I'm looking for:
Jumyou wo Kaitotte Moratta
Yukionna to Kani wo Kuu
Shounen no Abyss (was just chosen because it has the same vibe I described)
Stuff that are kind of a stretch that I've also read:
Orange
Kuzu no Honkai
Relife

I read that but it was too much to be comfortable to me to be honest, sorry I didn't elaborate on that. For reference, Abyss is like 80% towards the tipping point already. I also really disliked the love triangle but that's just because I dislike them in general, for the one in Punpun specifically I understood what it represents so I had somewhat less problem

Recently read Chainsaw Man and found it kind of average (Kobeni and hamburger scene was hilarious).
My favorite manga is Kokou no Hito. I feel a very strong connection to it and the art is marvellous. If you have an interest in mountaineering or rock climbing I strongly recommend it.
I also loved Vagabond and am hoping for the hiatus to end. Reading this manga felt as if I was transcending my own being, letting go of my thoughts, some sort of meditation.
>>7199
Haven't read Boys on the Run, but there is another manga by that same author, which I really liked - "I Am a Hero".
Right now I am waiting for Vinland Saga to end. I tried reading it as an ongoing manga, but I can't do it this way, I will read it once it's completely finished. Same goes for One Punch-Man and Made in Abyss.

Hiroki Endo is great at world building. A good amount of his works are either cyberpunk or post cyberpunk.
I don't mind the sex in his works, but some people say its a little too much hentai. He actually grew up in a place with a lot of prostitution and the criminal underworld right around the corner, so a lot of his works focus on the brutal human aspects of cyberpunk and other sci-fi instead of just the glamorous and flashy parts.
A bit of a long read but Eden: It's an Endless World was the first of his works that I read. I also really enjoyed his short stories, even though they tend to all involve death and tragedy, the story telling is superb. It puts an interesting perspective on the idea that there are no happy endings, but that life goes on either way.

Tryna resurrect this thread with a discussion on the recent continuation of Berserk.
Three chapters have been released over the last two months and the next are supposed to come in august.
Allegedly Miura planned out the story out years/decades ago, and it is supposed to be completed strictly in his spirit.
Are you interested in it? Should it be continued? What do you think will happen?
Personally, im not sure how to feel about it, since i accepted years ago that the story will never be finished. Apparently now it will. Maybe even without year long hiatuses.

I really enjoy the works of Nobuyuki Fukumoto. Kaiji is fantastic. Right now I'm reading Gin to Kin which is also pretty good.

>>7960 berserk is hot soykaf sure it were good up till at most lost children arc, but after that, art seems soulless and story becomes very stale and repetitive, not to mention characters devolving, old anime and films is alright if you are on drugs or want to burn some time but beside that, nothing much more, funny everyone started riding this hot soykaf in past decade when manga itself got so soykafty i am sure anyone that were following it since 90s dropped long ago. now that writer is dead i just want to state that i am glad it is finally over, milking the dead cow into oblivion dragon ball style just suffocate any other series that might just have any potential as cattle readers will worship it no matter how much it stinks

Definitely check out Saikyo Densetsu Kurosawa, it's a bit more grounded than fukumoto's better known works. It was continued in a second series, but It's dispensable, as the ending is very conclusive, which the follow-up kind of undoes. Both are great still.

>Dungeon Meshi
Was pretty good, I don't know if it's completed now, but I read most of it when it came out, and I guess it has a decent anime following now that its been adapted.
It's a comedy about a group of adventurers who go into a dungeon, but instead of it being about the main quest, everything is a cooking side quest while they generally move towards the end goal. You will find them basically making tasty meals out of all the dungeon monsters, and using their culinary skill to vanquish their foes. Won't spoiler it too much, but it does have a lot of good and funny art imo and is memeworthy if you like to make memes by taking frames out of context.
For something darker and certainly not comfy...
>Venus puts fur on me
The plot twist is unveiled pretty early on, so it's hardly a secret. The school bully is the victim of bullying and is forced to bully, the real mystery is why. The entire story is about bullies trying to outbully each other. Is this a horror story, is this a comedy? Who even knows at this point, but this soykaf is crazy fuarrrked up.
>Boy's Abyss
Even though it was adapted into a live action drama series, this is a pretty disturbing manga with a completely insane plot. The story revolves around a lovers suicide in a nowhere town, and the consequences of that legend that became a best selling novel, but what's that got to do with the MC?
>Instant Bullet
People with super powers try to save the world. It most certainly would not have anything dark or depressing. A story of heroes and villains. Unfortunately it ended too soon, IIRC it was because the author ended up in rehab or jail or something.
>Aku no hana
Just remember to never steal your crushes gym shorts or things will go down hill very quickly in your life. This manga is a downward spiral in degeneracy at the hands of the class loner with a sadistic streak.
>Sekai Oni
Imagine if you saw scary things in reflections. Now imagine if those things were real. People who went through extreme trauma also have the lucky ability to get isekaid into a demon realm with wacky doctor seuss looking monsters.
