New Community Zine - protocol7
Dr. X · 2021-06-04 02:48
New pseudo-zine. This is not meant to replace Lainzine. There is a working Git repo here if anyone wants to contribute.
https://gitlab.lain.la/salem/protocol7/
Contributors welcome. License is CC0. protocol7 is to lainzine as Arisu is to Lain.

I wouldn't mind at all if this replaced lainzine as long as it came out more frequently. Junk is just too lazy.

That's the plan. It will come out at least once every three months, at most every month. The README.md covers this. I want to make sure there is a backlog of "inventory" so there's never a moment of "wtf why isn't a new issue out".

Sounds neat, hope it works out.
Might send in something if i get to making any material.
Random · 2021-06-06 14:15
I am interested in contributing. I also contributed to Lainzine at one point and I would say that a replacement wouldn't be a bad idea, neither one of the two lainzines that "are being worked on" are coming out in 100 years unless someone takes over their development.
In addition to git I think a mailing list could prove useful. There could be two; one for meta-discussion for contributors and one for announcements.

This sounds good. Make sure to submit issues, commits/merges to the Git. I'll set up an e-mail for dev purposes.
I won't be able to do a ton of work (though I do some work every night, 5/7 a week) tonight, but I did manage to get things laid out a bit better.
Still debating on what format, but I think the best option is HTML and EPUB. I decided against TXT because I have another "zine" called #!lain that will be all TXT.
While I appreciate beautiful typesetting, I see this as a problem if it gets in the way of meaningful releases. When making something, you have to decide between: soykaf/rushed, balanced, extremehq/extreme-release-delays.
I think the balanced is the best bet. Also, working on a sort of template that all protocol7 issues will follow, so it will be easy to drop in art/music/articles without having to restart the design every single time.
I think special issues would be cool too.
Your contributions are very welcome. Someone contributed a basic script that searched for open FTPs and uploads files to them. I thought that was cool so I added it in.

May I ask if there is any reason in particular that you decided to use the Creative Commons license instead of the GPL v2 or v3?
Cereal Killer · 2021-06-08 01:16

There's no real "public domain" license, not in the way CC0 allows for it.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-06-20 00:59
any updates on the zine, I looked at the github and it doesn't seem to be any news on it.

I've been busy with work. I haven't had a chance to update it in a week or two. Target release is 3 months to 1 month per issue.
Tequila · 2021-06-22 04:14
If eris can do it with 3-5 people, we should have no problem. Thanks for having the drive to start it.
Do we need to have legal rights over our contributions?
(e.g. if I made glitch art directly derivative of SEL, is that fine?)

I set the repo to CC0, so public domain. It's not compatible if the material is already non-CC0, so it has to be completely original. I think if it's glitched-out enough, it counts as your own interpretation, I think.
CC0 was chosen so there is no possible way responsible parties can monetize this, which puts us a little less in the crosshairs of media crops. legal team, not that it'd probably ever happen, especially considering it's a Japanese IP.
So either alter the format enough so it's different, or just make OC non-SEL stuff. I think references are okay.
I need to redo some of the methods for the zine. Open a pull request for sure if you can.
I don't want to spend a ton of time typesetting or getting caught up in "muh LaTeX" or we'll be here forever. That being said, a basic LaTeX template would be pretty sweet for rapid typesetting but I'm concerned with actually giving Lains material rather than jerking off over hipster font kerning.
Debbie Charteris · 2021-06-24 19:59
Great to see. Maybe I can write something someday.
Delilah · 2021-06-25 01:25
What is the project structure that someone should follow when making a pull request? Also, setting up an IRC channel and maybe using a tripcode here might be good ideas.
Yamaoto Toshi · 2021-07-03 17:14
I would suggest to add the possibility to contribute through other mediums in addition to git. Email for example, then you could commit them to git yourself. Making an account on your git and making a pull request probably filters out a bunch of people who would otherwise contribute because of its complexity.
Haruyoshi · 2021-07-04 03:25
Cool project, I'll start writing a short article on DNA sequence simulation and artificial genomes. Hopefully some people will find that interesting.
XERXES · 2021-08-05 18:25
Is this project still alive? Last commit was a month ago.

Did you do it?
Had kind of the same topic in mind for my own contribution regarding genetic algorithms. Anybody still alive?

I am, just posted >>6714. Was looking to write an article, but was looking to figure out the specifics. A project like this might want to use a real-time chat platform to get this done - I think Lainchan's speed is part of the reason Lainzine hasn't come out in awhile.
Junk · 2021-08-10 21:55
hey salem! <3
just wanted to let u know that your comments are seen and I'd like to get in touch with you. I'll be submitting a PR to your git with a more substantive address of your concerns, in case you've abandoned this thread.
>>6715
>>6716
hey,
since Salem has disappeared, you're free to submit your content to the lainzine: lainzine@protonmail.com
keep in mind that CC0 - system7's license - allows your work to be reprinted anywhere else without asking your permission, including for profit.
as it has been discussed before, we are moving to a new release format that prioritizes timely submission. I'll explain more in a thread.
Spike Spiegel · 2021-08-11 03:03

-yeah I submitted a short article. I'll probably resubmit it to the lainzine since the PR never got approved.

Salem here - sorry I never responded. I lost internet for a while and some stupid life stuff happened. A little annoyed but hey what are you going to do in ClownWorld.
>>6714
Life problems. Getting my VPN back tonight. I'll be logging in and doing some pulls/merges over on Git.

I accepted it. Just realized it's PDF, may need to change that or something. Playing catch up right now. 3 month window is closing in ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
