I just realized there was no fanfic thread, and I'm surely not the only one to read some right? Discuss your favorite fanfictions, what you like and/or dislike about them, and give or ask recs. Popular fanfic publishing websites: https://archiveofourown.org/ (the best one imo) https://www.fanfiction.net/ https://ficbook.net/ (russian) https://www.wattpad.com/home (this one is full of children and low-quality content so I'd avoid) Some of the works I'd recommand (sorry, I mostly read cartoons fanfics, so feel free to recommand book, anime or vidya fics) Zootopia (Sad Judy by FriteWag) : https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11840214/1/Sad-Judy Frozen (The Queen's Mercy by JYN044) : https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10910214/1/The-Queen-s-Mercy Warrior Cats (Ouroboros by smug_albatross) : https://archiveofourown.org/works/18523150

i turned my life into fanfiction and i love and live it

I think they removed a few of my favorites. Anyway, have this. https://web.archive.org/web/20181113201106/https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9885328/1/Blues-Clues-vs-the-Mafia

i write fanfiction but its all probably cringe, mostly dead fandoms i also like to take "bad" games with little to no actual plot and give them my own, think like baldis basics (which actually has an interesting strategy based gameplay to it) >pic is how i feel posting this

For better or worse, it seems larger fandoms attract better writers, so most of my recs are for MLP:FiM. A shame, because it would be really nice to have some good ABe or Nihei fanfiction appropriate for lain. >The Coin (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7218037) Haruhi discovers her omnipotence and wrestles with the consequences. This story is made excellent by how the author succeeds in illustrating her melancholy - its origins, nature, and resolution all from her own perspective. >A Bug on a Stick (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/396531) The best imagining of Celestia and Luna's childhood I've read so far, with excellent worldbuilding and prose. >A Million Little Lights (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/321785) A short piece on Celestia's internal struggle with her role in pony society. Echoes a lot of themes from Friendship is Optimal in far less words, making it more compelling. >Silver Glow's Journal (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/317740) Admiral Biscuit was autistic enough to roleplay as a pony every day for an entire year at college. The depth created from that commitment makes this a very enjoyable read. >Not The Hero (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/217108) A critique of Anon in Equestria stories, presented as cosmic horror. >Friendship: Beyond Equestria (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/311765) I have a soft spot for sci-fi regarding a species's early forays into space. This story explores how a technologically advanced Equestria, pushed by the threat of extinction, establishes a colony on another world. Although it appears as just a crossover with Beyond Earth, the author has been pretty imaginative in integrating the franchises and presenting a character-driven view of an RTS.

There are two fanfics I like, the first one is a Death Note one but it's in Spanish. There's an English version but it's much smaller: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10844818/1/Hidden-note-The-Winchester-Mad-Bombings-Case The second is a Dragon Ball Z one, called Dragon Ball Multiverse, the quality of drawing vary between chapters, some are painful but others are perfect. https://www.dragonball-multiverse.com/

Surely I'm not the only Lainchan user who writes erotic My Little Pony fanfiction. Mine only gets published on a fetish imageboard, and some of it in fetish art packs.

>>6490 Fanfic isn't literature bro. It's not wrong, it just isn't /lit/. Same thing with manga.
Zero Cool · 2021-10-21 22:32
>>6490 Fanfiction should only be a stepping stone but not a destination. People who write it should then go back and redo it thereby making their own "original" work. It is kind of like when Shakespeare took a Greek tragedy and made it into Romeo and Juliet with the difference being the original story was a warning against young love while his story was a warning against multi-generational family feuds. Also some "Christian legends" are repackaged pagan ones like St. George's story being a repackaging of Sigurđ the dragonslayer. Those Christian stories were basically fanfiction as is their dying-and-rising god story about a carpenter with elements taken from Mithra, Osiris, and Adonis. Snorri, writer of the Prose Edda, basically made fanfiction by combining the Poetic Edda with Christian themes hence Baldr seeming like Jesus and Ođinn like the Judeo-Christian god.
Armitage · 2021-10-26 19:35
>>6953 >Fanfiction should only be a stepping stone but not a destination. People who write it should then go back and redo it thereby making their own "original" work. I largely agree, but there's nuance. In particular, fanfiction which only takes place in the same world, with few or none of the established characters, largely already fits this description, and I write a lot of that kind. Not all fanfiction would be worth translating, also, and it allows for a lot of shortcuts which can heavily change the tone of a work. I've been planning a novel-sized story I expect to write over years, and I've already thought of ways I could conceivably change a few names and get it published.
Koos van der Merwe · 2021-11-28 14:34
I had the worst idea ever of reading a saga book and reading a fanfic based on the saga at the same time, it is confusing as fuarrrk I don't recommand it

Recently I found a fan fiction web comic someone was working on based on the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series called Shadow of the Sun. It has a fast pace to it, but the story is interesting. https://shadowofthesun.webcomic.ws/comics/1 Sadly it's been on hiatus since June of last year and while the artist said they would work on it again earlier this year, nothing has came of that so far.

>>6950 Fanfic isn't literature, but it is absolutely /lit/ and deserves to be here. What can be more /lit/ than amateur writers sharing their attempts at writing and amateur critics critiquing the writings of amateur writers? /vis/ has people making art and learning drawing. The programming board has people making programs. /lit/ should have a fanfic thread or at least some kind of thread where people attempt original writing.

Just this week I stumbled upon "Harry Potter and The Methods of Rationality" by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Though I had never in my life read fanfiction, this one really caught my interest. There is slightly over 100 chapters and I have read/listened to 12 or so and I must say I love it. The story unfolds in a similar timeline as the original one, but here Harry is a child prodigy in science and, as you can guess from the title, he tries to apply scientific methods to understand how magic works. The situtations he finds himself in and the way he acts have been quite funny to read. I don't know much about the author, but he is an AI researcher, not a famous guy, but I think he is quite smart. >>7929 That's one's pretty gud, remember reading it when it was being posted. Fan fic, IMO is trash, it's just lower effort of the same soykaf MSM does: Take some ancient legend, do your fanfic, update the setting to near-ish IRL times, tada: You have a Rom/Com... get it, heh, Comety. Because Rome is destroyed by one: Juliette AKA Julius Ceasar (seizure like the quakes of a comet cause, see Missouri state gov admitted accounts of weirdness during Napoleon's Comet): http://www.new-madrid.mo.us/132/Strange-Happenings-during-the-Earthquake Most actual fic is created by a cult of personality - several writers create a work, imbue it with more man hours than humanly possible otherwise, and then attribute it to a front-man. Sometimes a clever name to reference their specific cult or other such mystery is used as the character. So, IX X XI = 9 10 11. Some say the 11 or IIs be Kth number, and should remain silent. Thus the Dao of Nine and Ten: "Nintendo". 9/11 Gregorian is the Coptic New Years, celebrating Jesus... or some other Romantic Comety. J K Rowling (on the floor laughing my ass off) references the magic 11 and time Ten (10/J), but not the i (which is 9, divine, eye of providence symbol, hidden eye, Arrgh! Anyone remember ACiD and iCE, or all the other all caps names in the BBS era that had a lower case i? That's a hidden wisdom reference). Rowling's works reference Aleister Crowley's "Sex Magic" which is a "Love Craft", eh? The sleep deprived magical wonderland tradition of sundry branches of Mysteries Babylon. Of course these works maintain the tradition of occulting dirty minded potty humor {Harry Potter = hairy butter = Hare [the mad hatter's friend of Alice (crow lie?) in W[underland]}. HerHeiny, Stranger... etc. Of course everyone knows that bash.org Wand = Wang "revelation"... Yes, so... Everyone can tell who's a proper writer because their PenIs Mightier than a Sword! The difference between fanfic and Real writers is that Real Writers put layers of "naughty" (bog standard) occult mystery references in their works, and a healthy helping of hidden potty humor for the kids who are just learning how to de-occult things. So, Get with the program fan fic fools! Add some mystery IMO: I hate fan fic because it's only almost there. It's a cock tease. Original works of fiction aren't welcome on these stupid fan-fic sites - so it's a controlled opposition trap. You actually can't get any traction on a FanFic site with your "unique" work if it's a proper fiction. Meh, it's these idiot fanfic readers that - in shunning new writers & new world crafting - maintain the station that culty gatekeepers have, by feeding the cults' egregores instead of paying attention where it's deserved fanfic readers act as yet another barrier to entry - by having horizons so unexpanded they make it necessary to join a cult to actually become a popular published author. It wouldn't be so bad if the fanfic authors realized HOW to write and emulated the culty tactics of multiple writers, and layers of "seasoning" as HPMOR author[s] called it. That is a proper written work, that is just borrowing the fanfic loosh [magical energy] for their "Bayesian Conspiracy". It's a popular fanfic because they realized the same things I've posted were true, did what I'm suggesting others do to replicate their success. However, like Casandra, no one will believe anything a seagull has to say about how to really fly. Have an image I copped from another enlightened fool who was speaking of such truths found in Little Witch Academia. It's pretty blatant, no big deal if you're not with the program, but you don't get real traction as a writer unless you do the occult song and dance, mkay?

>>8110 lainon, this isn't erischan On a more serious note, I wonder if we could make up a way of writing that feels natural but also can't be mimicked by an AI. I guess an easy way would be to always state the day/month of your post at some point, but it would be very obnoxious too.
