Is anybody else struggeling with severe attention span shortage while reading lately?
I can barely read halfway through any books introduction before losing focus cancels the next attempt to read about what actually seemed to be exactly my kind of topic.

Limit your internet usage.

I struggle heavily with this too. It's the internet, years of exposure to this just demolished my attention.

Get some therapy.
The Plague · 2021-05-18 09:37

don't do that, OP. Therapy is a waste of money and time if you are able to simply self-actualize- something probably every lain can. Therapy is for women. They will look strange at you if you are a man "what are you even doing here?".

I use therapy and I'm a man and I find it really helpful. then again I'm severely mentally ill.

The actual mentally ill do not talk to people (who charge a very high hourly rate) to cure their illness. Therapy is another capitalist invention to make money.

For me, I either can't pay attention at all or am so focused on whatever I'm reading that I erupt into an angry outburst if I'm interrupted.
To contribute: do you think that barometric pressure has a significant effect in your ability to concentrate, understand, and just generally think?

Mostly this.
It can work for entry-tier work-on-the-self, but real mental issues are to be discussed only with a psychiatrist, not a psychologist, and those guys solve problems with meds. meaning: they only try to reduce symptoms. not good for the long term. You can either help yourself or be fuarrrked. It's unfortunate, yes.

That sounds like a life hack and a half! How does one self-actualize? How did you learn to do it? Is it really going to solve my problems?

Yes, my cognitive and linguistic abilities seem to be kind of "weather sensitive", which might directly mean related to barometric pressure. At rapid switching circumstances I might even need to take inflamation reducing painkillers against headache to be able to form simple thoughts.
Erik Johansson · 2021-05-19 21:48
My attention span was always fuarrrked.
That being said i dont force myself to read, i just pick up a book when i feel like reading and usually do a few pages until there is a memorable spot where i can pick up later.

reading along with the audiobook playing has really helped me with this. it more so will force you to take in the words and makes it easier to pay attention

Then make better weather. You'll know you're doing it right when the weather you intend to occur starts occuring (what you consider to be) abnormally soon after you set your intent.
>t. can control local air pressure directly under some conditions
... oh and you don't need magic for it, just an intent. Ritualism and magikkk philosophy just adds unnecessary complications/noise on the wire.

My attention span is absolutely fuarrrked, I think its chans and videogames that has done it.
I can't concentrate for more than 5 minutes at a time

I only read when I have nothing else interesting to do. Right before bed, or during my lunch break at work. When the only options beside reading are sleep or work, it makes it a lot easier to stay focused on the book. It takes me weeks to finish any book like that, but it's better than not reading at all like I did for years.
Void · 2021-11-22 20:49
Sometimes I get stuck in a cycle of intending to read a book, failing, and leaving it for tomorrow. Usually, while reading, the words invoke other thoughts, and I can begin staring into space for ten minutes until that finishes and I resume reading. I don't have an issue finishing books, and remembering them, however.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2021-11-22 21:12
Funnily enough I had the opposite experience recently. I have been reading while using public transport, and manage to read a lot more than I did since the pandemic began.

- Write a reading list and a weekly to-do list. So, you always know what you are supposed to do.
- Write your own notes. Preferably use a notebook.
- Make sure you get enough sleep (generally at least 8 hours). Go to bed by midnight.
- Try to improve your diet. Start going for walks/jogging.
- Read:
- Read A Mind for Numbers, by Barbara Oakley (it teaches you learning skills)
- Read How to Read a Book, by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren. (it teaches you how to read/approach a book)
- Read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
- Read The New Oxford Guide To Writing by Thomas S. Kane (it helps you to improve your writing)
- Try some variation of the Pomodoro Technique.

Just don't. Intros are mostly just fluff unless the subject you're reading needs some background information. Otherwise they're advertising for what you're about to read. If you already have motivation to read something, don't bother with the intro.
