The Accelerationist Library
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2020-04-21 19:13
"Accelerationism is [the name of a contemporary] political heresy: the insistence that the only radical political response to capitalism is not to protest, disrupt, or critique, nor to await its demise at the hands of its own contradictions, but to accelerate its uprooting, alienating, decoding, abstractive tendencies. The term was introduced into political theory to designate a certain nihilistic alignment of philosophical thought with the excesses of capitalist culture (or anticulture), embodied in writings that sought an immanence with this process of alienation. The uneasy status of this impulse, between subversion and acquiescence, between realist analysis and poetic exacerbation, has made accelerationism a fiercely-contested theoretical stance. At the basis of all accelerationist thought lies the assertion that the crimes, contradictions and absurdities of capitalism have to be countered with a politically and theoretically progressive attitude towards its constituent elements." Acc isn't really a particular political philosophy it's just a way to understand how the world is going to accelerate towards anti-human technocapital whether you like it or not.

I've always debated it as the exact opposite of what you're saying. That is, as a strategic difference on the best way to get to communism. Where most think that we have to oppose capitalism on every field and progressively advance towards communism, accelerationists think this effort is vain and maintains the status quo ; and that we will get to communism quicker by pushing as fast as possible and in the most grotesque way the worst aspects of capitalism, to make it crumble upon itself and its inhumanity.
Also there is the theory - for lulz mostly - that several western leaders (Trump, Macron, Johnson, etc.) are secretly accelerationists that push the most outrageous bullshit everyday in hope to hasten the revolution

So you fell for the dumb ass mainstream meme take of /acc theory? go and read the U/ACC primer or something before spreading the dumb soykaf you take as accelerationism, glitterboy. The acceleration of contradictions has got to be the most dumb and soykafty take on the whole thing.

Accelerationism: Capitalism as Critique' & Other Essays
By James Ellis
It’s been over a year since I wrote Accelerationism: Capitalism as Critique, and the socio-political fluctuations within the ‘Accelerationist sphere’ within that time have been simultaneously chaotic, misinformed, ignorant, catastrophic, dumbfounded, exemplary, racist, humanist, leftist, rightist, ecological, libertarian, emancipatory and entropic. In short, Nick Land was entirely correct when he stated

An Autodidact's Guide to Accelerationism
Given the perpetual confusion (and the deliberate esotericism) around ‘Accelerationism’, its theoreticians, and its political ‘goals’, I have prepared this syllabus as a kind of (auto)didactic reading guide for the would-be Accelerationist and others curious about wading through this rich yet disconnected area of ongoing research.
With a recognition that “Accelerationism” has come to stand in as a post hoc signifier for a variety of discontinuous theoretical threads, I have attempted to provide an exhaustive—yet not too exhaustive—overview of the concept (if it is a unitary one), its major theoretical lineages, as well as its discontents. As such, this guide does not have any particular theoretical or political bent—it is neither r/acc nor l/acc nor g/acc nor u/acc—and thus the readings may be contradictory or unclear, but more often than not they have been paired together precisely on account of their dissonance!
It is my hope that this guide may—eventually—help dispel some of the ongoing myths about Accelerationism that permeate academia, the blogosphere, Twitter, and (increasingly) the edges of mainstream political discourse.

how well read should one be to start really understanding accelerationism? it sounds like land was at least influenced by kant, marx, d&g, and a few others, is the stanford encyclopedia of philosophy sufficient for all of them or is it necessary to at least read a more in depth overview?

. This book is
intended to be the definitive guide and reference to Nick Land et al.’s work in the
numerological, neoqabbalistic, and crypto-anarchist time-sorcery system of the presumed
Nma ur-culture (the hyperfictional background reconstructed as metaphysical/mythic
scaffolding for understanding the workings of the time-sorcery system). I spent over two
years excavating this system from forums and bitrotting web pages left by Land and others,
and correlating and reconstructing the system with borrowed DNA from other systems, in
order to make it living and intelligible for future readers.

I have never met an accelerationist* who isn't a weak, rich and bafflingly ignorant college student. When I first read about it I thought these people must be sociopaths or something, but it turns out they're just dangerously short-sighted. Not looking to derail the thread into soykafflinging, just wanted to say my piece. To any acc* reading this: please consider the possibility that the class enlightenment you're waiting for never comes and we end up destroying all life on earth instead.

I thought accelerationism was just taking the political ideology you don't like and making it go turbo mode. I.E, if you hate SJWs, you intentionally start making propaganda that supports an extreme, already down the slippery-slope view to "accelerate" where the ideology will end up anyway.

This is literally what Land advocates. He supports the Chinese tyrannical/racist/police state regime because he is a massive bootlicker who dreams of alternate histories where the poopoo elightenment and ideas like "liberty" never came to be and 90% of people are still serfs.

Read some of his books, seems you're just repeating what you have heard from others. There is a very strong L/ACC community who hype around Land. He does however associate with the right now post-Y2K.

ancaps are the ideologues of capital, they would never be able to come to the conclusions the Ccru did because to them capital is just the natural and rational state of the world rather than a process that fundamentally is against any Kantian/Enlightenment ideals of truth and rationality. It makes falsehoods real rather.

As somebody who was around and pretty hyped for the Accelerationist "moment" in like 2014 or whenever (L/Acc I guess but honestly also U/Acc because I mean why not) I was always sort of astounded by how completely it failed to materialize. Maybe I shouldn't have been.
Where are the accelerationist collectives? Where are their political parties, performance artists, militias, publications, guerilla broadcasts? Not a whole lotta praxis in writing Lovecraft/Gibson fanfic, it turns out. Hell, seems the only people to have done anything meaningful with it are those that just used it as a pivot around which to maneuver their existing stance: Srnicek & Williams, Fisher, Ben Bratton, Sadie Plant. Land has been a joke since the 90s. Who else can you even name? A reader & a university department do not a radical movement make.

Though I have to say: the force of the ideas is there. A willingness to embrace but criticize Freud, Marx, Foucault, all of it--it has a great strength. But it's a demonstrable failure. Maybe the next intellectual wave will pick something up. But for now--back to what's tried, because you know it's true.

Accelerationism was never about praxis. This was a delusional misunderstanding of what Accelerationism is about in the first place. And Land became much more coherent after the 90s, that doesn't change just because it upsets leftist ideologues.

Most accelerationists have some kind of hero complex where they will survive that reset. I've even met people on the fringe who are now sucked into the consumer ecosystem by becoming preppers, despite them saying that the system is fuarrrked and needs a reset.
Every accelerationist book seems to miss the point. Of course soykafs fuarrrked, but why is tearing it all down better? Most people would rather live under a dictator than under anarchy, because people want stability.
I just have a strong feeling mist accelerationsta are either closet sadists, psychopaths, or idiots who want to watch the world burn, but don't realize what its going to do to them. Or they just want to reshuffle power to themselves because they think they could do it better or they deserve it.
At least most of these people are pussies who wont do soykaf and just write books and whine about a reset because of the woes of the world.

I truly think we will see a huge wave of popularity for l/acc and u/acc come 2030ish when people realize we haven't done enough to prevent climate change and we see the heating up of global conflicts and migrant crises. I think "acceleration" in the sense of a genuine political movement complete with a more developed theory and praxis model is bound to occur, we just need to wait for the next generation of theorists that can excite the popular consciousness in the way Land, Fisher, Plant did.

you're right but it won't BE l/acc, l/acc already happened, inspired some books, had a year-long twitter discourse in 2015, and then went away (like it was supposed to).
what will happen is, those same people inspired by it (who haven't gone away) will have been working on different projects that will have (hopefully) sufficiently matured by the 2030s and the incident wave of climate unrest that there will be an intersection of the theoretical groundwork and mass mobilization to coincide and produce a moment of actual rupture.

Then again, there isn't some sort of "Accelerationism", or even an "acceleration", for someone to get a grasp of. I'm fuarrrking sick of white middle class males bringing "solutions" to problems created by accomodated white men. Accelerationism is marxist, and so is nick land. Or at least he was, during the only time it mattered - the 90's. your favorite accelerationists are probably going to reference his 90s writing at some point, in fact, I doubt when people talk about Land, they talk about any ideas he had outside of the CCRU.

My confusion then, I am speaking precisely of post CCRU accelerationism. I understand that especially as a meme, only the Land and the CCRU acc are known, they were more striking. Even so accelerationism is only marxist in the way that have a similar concept about surplus value (the growth of capital works wasting this surplus) but accelerationism dont lead the increse of surplus for a teleology of revolution or collapse

> the crimes, contradictions and absurdities of capitalism
Care to name them?
Surely, you can point at some bad thing capitalists has done and call it their crimes, but all other systems have do the same. What is a specifically capitalist crime? Inventing chemical agriculture and make us forget what a famine is? What it is?
It's the same for it's absurdities. If an actor do something less competitive than other, he become marginal. There is a lot less absurdities in capitalism than in, say, state intervention.
And it's not the first time I hear someone talking about the contradictions of capitalism.

How young are you?
The world is a lot more peaceful now that it was during the cold war. Independence wars everywhere, more civil wars than you can count, ethnic cleanings everywhere, the middle east was always at war. Central Africa had it's regional WWI and so did Iran and Iraq.
We are more at peace now than before. And the tensions between China and the US, well that's how it have always been between the major powers.
The refugee crisis started in the 60's. The only thing that changed since is Merkel creating laws within the EU to get one million of people in Germany and they never removed them for politic reasons. Australia had such a crisis and solved it as soon as they wanted.
And climate change? At least this one have some potential but I have heard the same song for 40 years now, and it just keep going nowhere.

Accelerationism is a total psyop in both of it's "forms" for lack of a better word.
The "Passive" form of Accelerationism is quite literally "vote for your political enemies and hope their retarded policies literally cause the country to collapse from sheer force of stupid." It's the same logic as trying to will a house of cards into catching fire.
The "Active" form of Accelerationism is literally glownigger grooming to try and get people to do terror activities so they can either snatch them off the street before they do any real damage or entice others to do the same, or let them go through with ventilating a bunch of replaceable cogs in the system so as to create justification for passing another set of shady anti-freedom laws and gradually tighten the noose.
The situation is going to get way worse but it isn't going to magically collapse. This isn't TV. Even if it DID collapse you are not going to be a glorious wasteland hero, you're probably just going to die of exposure or a bacterial infection.

>what do you think intelligence explosion means?
it's obviously about the singularity. I see a connection to lesswrong because
1) both land and eliezer see the singularity as a serious, nigh-inevitable outcome for humanity. this is known as singularitarianism and it is imo in its entirety a cargo cult, which has in recent years become embarrassed
2) within that framework, neither are not "pro" or "against" the singularity, lesswrongers simply believed that a bad ending could be averted by giving all money to MIRI whereas Land would laugh in their face
3) most inheritors of the lesswrong ideology are now e/acc, or effective accelerationism. on the surface at least to me it sounds similar to left wing accelerationism but is generally more optimistic about AI and tech in its current form. and its Landian, or at least signals heavily as such.
>I am speaking precisely of post-CCRU accelerationism
accelerationism was to my understanding not a word used for anyone until the 2010s, when it was also applied to Lyotard, Baudrillard, y Delueze et Guettari.
>accelerationism dont lead the increase of surplus for a teleology of revolution or collapse
true, but the singularity imo takes the same place semiotically as the revolution. GDP is a countdown to singularity, Land discusses this at length
