Writing Software

What software do you use for writing? I currently use emacs + org-mode but I dislike how bloated and slow it is and am looking into new free software options. What do you use and what is your workflow like?

vim and tmux, works everywhere and quick to setup.

Depends on what I'm writing. If it's just some quick notes, I just open up typora (https://typora.io/, not open-source though) and use markdown. Longer pieces of text: vim + LaTeX. >>4604 I've tried to get into org-mode (spacemacs + evil mode), but never saw much benefit.

OneNote and Word still beat the anything else by a mile, atleast for me.

>>4611 not trying to be pretentious, but it doesn't sound like you tried much else. I'm curious, what is the appeal? Notes don't require terribly much structure and so they end up as purely text. Do you need to draw stuff for your notes? Is it visual appeal? It can't be ease of use, every simple text editor does basically what you need. Is it exportability?

>>4612 Well I do keep txt notes on my servers while im working, but the ease of organization is superb in OneNote. I can write blocks as they pop in my head and just drag them around, ofc i can do the same in a sense with select-copy & paste in txt notes, but only in a vertical manner, not horizontal. Also Word seriously beats LibreOffice in every possible way for me.. for example I need to put a ton of images into some of the documents I need to write on a regular basis. LibreOffice just chokes under a decent resolution image... Now I have been a linux user for most of my life, but at one moment I got to try win10 and in all fairness Microsoft has gotten these things down, like really good.

I find Emacs, and sometimes Spacemacs, with Rmarkdown is my preferred way to write my academic articles.

emacs + org-mode, mostly for research and writing articles. for plain writing it is probably overkill, but for scheduling tasks, keeping a lab notebook, latex, referencing, integrating code and so on it is perfect.
