The level of spelling errors in this book is too off-putting to trust the contents. It simply feels like one big ruse, even though it's known that this kind of sublim programming can yield some marginal results.
Wtf Lain, where'd you pull this from?

Dunno, had it on my hard drive from around 2013. The Russian version claims to be translated from English, but is also edited better. The whole nestalking mumbo-jumbo seems like a big ruse started on russian chans around 2012 and obviously takes inspiration from Lain series and other popular cyberpunk media of late 90's, a massive ARG.
Or maybe it's the collective subconscious zeitgeist of late 2000's: the SCP Project, the files of death, Red Room, popularized and trivialized hacktivism (all cool kids used to run LOIC on their computers), first popularization or anonymous darknets, etc.
The John Ohno persona had a blog last updated in 2006:
https://datalust-infornography.blogspot.com/
There is also a very recent article in Mondo2000 magazine of same authorship:

>Or maybe it's the collective subconscious zeitgeist of late 2000's
This. Specifically for netstalking, it goes right after the collective subconscios trends and high-aiming hopes about interwebs alike. As the structure of the web evolves, the essence of movement evolves also, yet there's a stable part: a feeling of going beyond, a discoverer's journey for something bigger you never know of. This could take dozens of forms.

Hi, I've started translating this Netstalking guide at a slow pace. I'll post the first paragraph. Does anyone still have any interest in this?
1. General idea
Welcome to this guide on the topic of "Netstalking". Over the course of reading this, you will get familiar with the history of the subject and go over the basics of how to use the "query language" Google and how to scan IP addresses with the help of programs Nmap and masscan. You will also go over more complex topics such as analysing the output of different protocols, infiltration into anonymous and abandonned networks (especially in Alternative Reality games), defence against tracking and filter bubbles and so on. Unless stated otherwise, the software mentioned in this text by default refers to the Windows family of Operating Systems. You may have already asked yourself the question: "What is Netstalking?". Coming from the words stalking and "Urban Exploration", Netstalking is defined as a searching activity performed on the edges of networks, aimed at discovering obscure, inaccessbile, and rarely-visited objects followed by their analysis, systematisation, and archiving for the aesthetic and informational satisfaction for the seeker. For different individuals, this has various connotations: find the most special and meaningful information; casual investigation of networks where one can let themselves be irrational; journeying into new places, as yet unexplored by the average person; searching for the strange and mysterious.

>reads part of document
I, too, like cocaine.
>>4076
>collective subconsciousness
This seems like a legitimate theory. The late 80s, 90s, early 00s were periods of a much larger mindshare for cyberpunk in general. There was a general feeling of anything being possible. This was partially disrupted by the dot-com-bubble, but culturally it was deeply ingrained.
>>4183
This is very good work, I also would welcome and appreciate any translation you're willing to offer.

Hi, one of the authors here.
Most of this book consists of well-known methods utilised by hackers, OSINTers, /r/deepweb and cryptoanarchists. The history part is out there just for clarifying some urbanweb myths we had about notable names and legends. We've made a worthy compilation but it's just that: compilation. I'd say the only parts worth translating are ARGs, the whole Analysis chapter and the intro.
If you're also going to transate the Reports chapter, how about renaming the reports into "captures"? That's a play on "capture as in photography" and "capture as a finding", which should convey the aestetical aspect of the newborn report-writing culture netstalking currently tries to develop.
If translating lainon >>4183 has a bunch of free time on their hands, maybe it should be more educating and fun to translate some case files and post them at Reddit. Although that would mean someone will translate it back into russian and spread in their darknet telegram channels; and someone would made a news article, causing possible harm to the object found.
I'm still butthurt about that: https://theoutline.com/post/7709/meet-the-man-who-has-spent-the-past-years-making-over-19000-videos-of-himself-feeding-cats
A fine example of a netstalking finding made by myself. Someone has posted it on Reddit. The crafted little description I've made went in vain, and once it got into the news, many people just had to disturb the guy. Good thing he's turned out to be a chill dude. Someone else would just delete the channel and flee, which I've seen multuple times, too.

what is 'netstalk?
how can i 'netstalk'
is learning russian a prerequisite?
why are russians so smart?
Porcupine · 2020-03-27 03:35
I think it apt to point out that to ``stalk,'' in Russian, as often is the case with foreign words that are not quite integrated. is used with a restricted, often unpopular or less natural, albeit fully proper, meaning; In this special case, the restricted, fully-proper though not entirely natural (for English) meaning is as a hunder stalking his prey. (Incidentally, A(rkadiy) & B(oris) ``the Brothers'' Strugatsky's Picnic by the Wayside, on which (very loosely, thank Bog) was Tarkovsky filmed his Stalker, whose fame the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. computer games used, uses this definition---[severe spoiler]not say you not were warned!~; carefully moving, testing each next (for a mis- could be his last) step, creeping forward, towards the room it's not only about the hackers' essence.) i.e. I hope this is not a guide about mere ``cyberstalking'' (which, yes, is a part of the general, but it's more like a vapid disinterpretation by lethargy motivated of stalking).
I think it's ironical that, by a purer interpretation, the title is ``nonstalking.'' It is quite clearly not natively Russian, even only at (the rest of) the title. If it's from English, I might guess it's title was ``general notstalking surview.''
>As the structure of the web evolves, the essence of movement evolves also
This is indicative of essencelessness, aprinciplety. It would mean that the ``movement'' (if it is fair to call it that---not even try answering that question) is a more ``meh, whatever'' thing---come as you please, do what is natural; a noble principle itself, but without such being declared as the principle, you get a very ``washed-out'' movement, more like sea foam on the wavy shore, ebbing and flowing with the tides---without general shoreline-stability.

Why do you need such outdated ways of storing knowledge when practical memory extender has been possible since invention of computer hypertext? Just use a localhost wiki pim, plenty of them.
>>4781
When you demystify the definition, which is basically a portmaneau of STALK as in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game, which colloquially includes urbexing/hanging out at abandoned sites in Russian slang, and NET, the Internet, it would be called OSINT in English. Sounds like some boring office grunt job of investigative journalist, right? If you want the mythical part still be present, read John Ohno's articles and look for sp00ky places and web/hypermediapunks. There's no such mythical culture surrounding net exploration in West, outside of Lain-utism, Tsuki cultists or deepweb creepypasta because netstalk as phenomenon is a forced meme of Russian imageboards period between 2011~2013 with somewhat elaborate folklore, inside jokes and actual people who dumpster-dive on the Net, although they are spiritually connected, western branch simply grew up and sticks to it's practical application only.
