``The Tragedy of Liberation'' is so good I actually bought a physical copy, and I can highly recommend it. Looking forward to finishing it this week and probably picking up the rest of the trilogy soon. Electronic copies are hard to find via a simple google search but I was able to get them from soulseek. Enjoy.
Apoc · 2018-08-04 18:30
>>2280 uploading some nice books first are complete stories by JG Ballard, imo in terms of style better cyberpunk writer than Gibson as Gibson is like kicking dead whales down the beach at few things and let's be honest about it second is Tiqquns Introduction to Civil War, which is quite /cyb/ philosophy and way at looking the society, very much inspired by Agambens biopolitics (if you are not into pihlosophy, just imagine society as a mushroom network, which is mixed with servers for some reason). And third thing is gibsons, burning chrome short story collection, needs no introduction

So a Japanese company has been publishing classic works of literature and philosophy as manga in order to make them more accessible to young readers. They've printed Das Kapital, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, The Art of War, Moby Dick, The Prince, 1984, etc. as manga. The only English translation of any of these that I've been able to find is this partially-translated copy of Mein Kampf. I'd be very interested to have a translated copy of The Prince, Art of War, or A Book of Five Rings.

>>3157 I'd second this out of a curiosity fueled by how horribly formatted and generally botched many ebooks are. When ebooks began to come out I though it would be marvellous to have a 30,000 book library on disk, but when I began to see the horrors perpetrated by most everyone who released ebooks, I realised that a printed book is much more than just the content: margins, font, style, , thickness and quality of the paper, proofreading (the horrible, soul-wrenching fails I have read, it's like stepping on a mental landmine every ten lines), prologue, a good translation, the physical feel of a book... I'd rather buy the dead tree version in many cases. For technical books it's kind of more okay.

>>3694 >margins, font, style I'll agree in the case of PDFs, but the whole point of epub is that the end user has control over those things, so the formatting can be adjusted to personal preference. I've never had a problem with the formatting of physical books, but at least theoretically, I'd say this is a point in favor of ebooks. >proofreading I've never noticed this being a problem in official ebook releases. Of course there'll be a typo here and there, but that's also the case with physical books (just today I was reading a physical copy of a book, and noticed a character's name was misspelled once, even though it was spelled correctly several other times on the same page). Then again, it's a completely different story when pirating unofficial ebooks (i.e., the uploader was the one to convert it from physical to digital). Those tend to be completely rife with typos, because of course one person manually typing out an entire book by themself is going to make tons of mistakes. Same thing with translations - an official ebook is going to use the exact same translation as the physical copy, but you may be talking about fan translations. >prologue Plenty of ebooks have these. >thickness and quality of the paper, ... the physical feel of a book When I started reading ebooks, I thought that this was something that would bother me, but I actually ended up being pretty surprised at the fact that it didn't make a difference to me at all. As long as the words are the same, the experience of reading them still feels the same to me (although I'll admit e-ink displays are much easier to read on than computer monitors). I guess that varies depending on the person though.

Collection of books on western Asceticism. I have some on Eastern ones but could never get into them. The Graeco-Roman book goes into both pagan and judeo-christian asceticism. I'm not a monotheist, but if you're looking into strategies of self-control and believe in virtue ethics, they still have a lot of value especially in terms of motivation. The Philokalia is also good, and you can find translations of it free online or a better one on library genesis. Don't mention the book to Orthodox christians or else their panties twist.

“Focus, Daniel,” his partner murmured, attention locked on the streams of data passing before his eyes. If he still had eyes, of which Dreiberg wasn’t entirely sure. “Your heart rate is spiking.” Dreiberg tried to nod, but his attention was too absorbed in his projection to make his meat jump. “I’ve just dropped the virus package,” he assured Kovacs, the words sounding impossibly slow in his ears. “Now we wait – no, there it goes.” The virus latched onto the corporation’s security program, which looked to Dreiberg like a gently revolving dodecahedron. Dreiberg’s virus – and he was proud of this one, whipped up overnight and utilising an unstable algorithm that should degrade as it dismantled security, leaving no trace behind – stripped facets from the shape, which struggled to envelope it. Shimmering “bricks” fell away from both and shattered in the nothingness of cyberspace. [...] Kovacs had undergone the most radical body modification – or mortification, Dreiberg thought – that he’d ever seen. He’d turned himself into little but walking hardware, wiring up his spine and sinking a multi-port jack through the base of his skull, filaments encasing his physical brain. It sucked power from his nervous system, necessitating massive endocrine supplements just to leave a little energy for unimportant things like respiration and blood flow. His body was a computer, and he upgraded it mercilessly. Most of his skull had been replaced by titanium plates studded with data ports, and the top half of his face was covered by a curved, mirrored laminate. In a dark room, Dreiberg could watch the shift of data across the plate, dancing black and white formula sets. He knew Kovacs had grown up in one of the Sprawl’s nastiest state-run orphanages. Dreiberg had accessed and memorised every scrap of data on his partner during their first job together – a pure revenge gig for Dreiberg, taking down the Yakuza-backed bank that had assassinated his father; for Kovacs, just another day in his mad Knight Templar existence, stabbing at the windmills of the world – and was sure Kovacs had done the same with him. The little man had come out of the Maximum Security Charlton Home with a mean streak and a burning need to save the innocent he no longer was, a combination Dreiberg sometimes envied and sometimes just had no damn patience for. He’d seen the medical records, could guess why Kovacs so enthusiastically attacked the fleshly prison than anchored him to the messy world of breathing and eating and excreting, but in all his searching, had never come across a single image of his partner. No school mug shot, no closed-circuit observation, not even a friend’s snapshot. Kovacs had eradicated his face from the world.

>>3770 If you read it 'unprepared' they think you won't find salvation. I asked an orthodox guy for a suggestion like the Philokalia but he ended up telling me not to read any more of it and told me some anecdote about an old woman who read the Philokalia and after telling this to a father, the father slapped his head and responded "how ever will you find salvation now?", either way I guess to them it's like reading a graduate textbook on a field you're interested in while unprepared and they hold the fear that the lack of understanding will eventually lead you to lose interest in the subject. >>2466 Who exactly is this "modern egyptology"? It's a well known fact that the egyptians timed their calendar according to the rise of Sirius on the east, plus they adopted a decan system to divide the night sky in the same way the Babylonians had. I think the argument is that their knowledge of astronomy was largely borrowed from/influenced by mesopotamia, not that they didn't have knowledge of astronomy. Anyway, leaving a copy of Cyclonopedia by Reza Negarestani. It's a weird read but highly enlightening about middle eastern politics. Cyberpunk without meaning to.

If you want to scan a book yourself, you can look up techniques for doing so, but I'd recommend first trying to find if someone else has already made a high-quality scan or an epub conversion. > Could I do the same without a scanner, just with my phone camera? There are ways to get a decent scanning setup using a phone, but you do need to build a setup for it. Don't just photograph the pages by hand. >Is there any advantege in turning it into a pdf file over a text file if the book doesn't contain any images or mathematical formulas? Honestly, epub is ideal. Not only can epub handle things like images and mathematical formulas, but also has a table of contents system and smaller formatting things like italics and page breaks. The main advantage of pdf, as far as I can tell, is that it's easier to convert from physical books - like you said, just scan and then OCR. With epub, even if you use OCR output as a starting point, there's much more manual formatting involved - things like making sure line breaks and page breaks are in the right place, or proofreading for OCR mistakes (whereas in a scanned pdf, small OCR mistakes are okay, since you don't actually see the OCR output).

>>4297 Epubs are smaller than raw text because epub is essentially html in a zip file, and thus superior to raw text unless you plan on reading in a terminal or 80 column display. Editing them to trim out images for even smaller files, or to replace with higher quality ones from other sources is also trivial. For some things you will be stuck with PDF or DJVU (especially technical stuff), and they could end up huge for little actual gain over raw text, while also being harder to edit than both epub or text... however I'd still take the pdfs. Either way, I've ran out of things to look far, and I've even went as far as packing archived webpages too... yet I've only barely pushed 18.4gb (7.6k files) of the 32gb sd card I set aside specifically for mobile book storage. I doubt I'll even be able to finish what I currently have as it is, let alone fill this up with more...
Shogun · 2020-03-02 21:07
>>4304 >superior But what if all I have is a micro sd card and a mp4 (pda) reader I find on the ground during an 'bad event' in my life? The cheap mp4 player could read text files. I have done it before back when cells weren't cheap while being 'smart'. Also, what if I'm using damn small linux in an emergency scenario where all I have is three flash drives, one with dsl, one with lakka, and one with the backed up files? What OS comes with an epub reader or any book reader for that matter? They all have a text reader though. And so I used calibre to convert my epub files to text to be prepared for things. I would have installed calibre from the tar but their own site says don't even try it. I hate linux. Windows might not be an option though. I do have many a apk file backed up on my various drives that I have (it's more than three flash drives actually) and one of the apk files has an ebook reader but what if I have to leave androids behind? wHaT iF tHeRe'S n0 rEaDeR? Longer answer is to print out a bunch of pdfs (most too large for me to bother posting) in advance: pdf specs, anything describing Deflate and LZ family decompression functions, postscript language specs, pkware specs... etc. You can actually make a hybrid epub\pdf file if you really wanted to with nothing more than cat

>>4306 The computer could be broken (via someone running off with it's sdd) and I could boot from it's bios. Also, it could be locked out of it's normal operating system but the bios password might not be an issue so I could change the boot order and BAM, run the os through my USB carry on drives wherever I do go. Or did you think computer's lasted forever? They don't, but parts would be afoot if nothing else. >>4307 >>don't try to reason with that poser Don't presume to imply that I'm delusional. There are many reasons you'd want to have text files if you end up forced for whatever reason to use a basic linux setup. You people obviously have no imagination. If I were homeless and bought a computer for 10 bucks that had win10 on it in a town with no wifi. Every time a computer gets stolen as a bum you could still have some of your most important files on hand. The new computer would not necessarily be reliable but it may be bootable from it's usb if the bios allows it. The new computer could be stolen hardware and locked out. Come on now children. PAPER? Try it. Far too much to carry unless it's like five books rather than a thousand.
Sabo Engle · 2020-03-03 03:20
>>4311 If the concern is needing to rely on a machine that only runs off a USB stick, you should probably setup persistent storage on that stick and install needed software on it in advance anyway, if you're making an effort to prepare. This would be a better strategy than converting all your books to txt because it would make your backup os install much more functional in general. Should probably do it even if all files are already converted. But alright point taken, maybe there could theoretically be someone with no internet access who has installed linux before but hasn't prepared for a harddrive failure and is screwed over by the spread of non-text formats. btw that other poster wasn't suggesting printing books on paper, he was saying to print info on file formats so you can make an algorithm to convert to text files yourself from first principles. Maybe practical if the homeless people in question are like Terry Davis, otherwise idk.

If you're running from the government and don't want wifi/bluetooth/etc to end up letting the drones triangulate your position then these cheap mp4 things are low wattage and easy to carry, like 3 inches by 2 inches. It was an example of what could read text. Damn small linux could as well. You could carry a usb of it and log into anyone's home computer, bypassing it's password while they're out at work, and after changing the boot order to usb you could use a second usb to read your books. A third usb with lakka would allow you to play games. All the while living in their attic. Or perhaps a nearby sewer. No one would notice if I ate their various breakfast foods. People are too tired to notice grits/oats,cereal missing nor an egg. Nor hygiene products. I could just shower and such for like 9 hours until they get back. ur wack

>>4638 Regarding >The book of symbols: Reflections on Archetypal Images I searched irc/libgen and private+public trackers but i cannot find it anywhere.I was ready to buy it from abroad since it appears to be out of stock here, but then i noticed the reviews. It appears that it is not that good actually, missing a lot of things or having superficial/inadequate descriptions. It actually appears to be more of a coffee-table eye candy item than an in-depth study of cross-cultural archetypical symbolism. Considering that its a really interesting topic, does anyone have a better suggestion? apart from jung I found a few similar books on libgen but going by keywords in titles is certainly not the best way. In return i offer Hermetica

>>4749 kind of? its a weird story actually. i had a maoist friend who was part of the red guards in my freshman year of college. he had a google drive full of pdfs, and a folder full of stuff about rojava. it's also where i got those guerrilla warfare texts. he really wanted to go to rojava and fight with the SDF, but he was also a rich kid dropping lots of his parents' money on enfants riches deprimes clothes and he pussied out when turkey got involved. i haven't seen him since he drunkenly cursed me out for implying he would need to get a job at some point. weird guy.

>>4751 Maoists are weird dude. Never met one that was sane. I always thought that the democratic confederalist state of Kurds was cool, although I never had the desire to actually go over there. It's sad to see what might be the best chance for a true democracy in the middle east (outside of Israel) be destroyed by the turks over petty ethnic squabbles. I wish there was more I could do for them. Do you have any more PDFs from that folder?
Nobody important · 2020-05-15 18:02
>>4754 >It's sad to see what might be the best chance for a true democracy in the middle east (outside of Israel) Oh boy you smashed the fireants next now. Can you really call them a "true" democracy when arabs, ~20%-30% of the population, are explicitly excluded from the political process by all parties? And we havent even gotten into the Palestinian territories yet.

>>4871 you can do something similar by making a throwaway amazon account for the free month of amazon prime (which lets you "rent" ebooks for free). iirc you might need to use an old version of the kindle desktop software to get acsm files with crackable drm.
