Archiving Old Books

The Plague · 2018-03-24 01:11
I have some books I came into possession of recently dated as far back as 1898. Can any Lainons help me and see about donating them to a scanning project that archives books? I know of Project Gutenberg, but I don't know if they take donations of books. Artists are Balzac, Sir Walter Scott and a Danish author named Jakob Knudsen, but I can't read Danish.

>books dating as far back as 1898 Friendly reminder that books age on a much longer timescale than we’re used to thinking about. Barring calamity (flood, infestation, etc.), books will easily last 300 years. Old books are not valuable in themselves. Unless there’s something special about these, you may be best off scanning them yourself and putting them on libgen and archive.org If you want to ensure they survive, you’ll have to hang on to them yourself. Most university libraries won’t bother with such a small donation unless the books are significant or the library is courting you for “development” purposes.

>>1901 I don't have anything besides a flatbed scanner. I'll see about sending them to archive.org.

>>1902 Alternatively, you could contact your local university library on the off chance they want the books. Look up the “selector” for each language group (e.g. “Germanic languages selector at $UNIVERSITY_LIBRARY” ) - this is the person in charge of acquiring new books in that language. Email each selector a list of the books in their language, including title, author, publication date, and the condition of the book (e.g. good/fair/etc.). If they don’t have that specific book, or they have a damaged copy, they’ll take yours. Most collections will be digitized over the course of the next couple years, and anything out of copyright will be available for free online, usually via google books.

I'm sorry, but why do you think that the world need scans of books by such big figures as Bačzac and Walter Scott, whose work is thousand and thousand, if not millions, of books all over the world? Also already on Project Gutenberg. Only if you have some special editions, and the illustrations or something of value can be scanned. Texts alone are well known and easily obtainable by anyone.

>>1922 I just want to share these editions with others. They're old and only a thousand copies were made according to the inside covers on some of the books.
