Which program do you use to read ebooks? I can't find any the best of all was Foliate that i still use today, how you're doing?
Joe Bloggs · 2025-08-03 08:51
The best program for the task: Emacs with pdf-tools and org-noter.

Zathura. Simple, works well if you're used to vim. Here's a good introductory video on it

I like Zotero. It's primarily known as a bibliography manager but it also has a reader with highlighting and notes. It has a few cross-platform clients and a syncing service run by the zotero foundation with a login (although you can use WebDAV to sync as well).
I'm not /completely/ in love with it though, it has a bit of a proprietary feel and the android app more so in that regard.

Anything good for epubs specifically? All I can find will split the book into pages for no reason, or be massive bloat that wants to organize my library.

is it even possible to do an epub without pages in some sense ? Its a bit of a strange format and not one I'm fully familiar with but a lot of them have at least some pages forced on you
I use mupdf

I've been using sioyek, pretty nice.

Of course it is possible. Epub is just a subset of html with some extensions. Afaik, the only thing to do with pages are "insert a pagebreak here" (rarely used in the real workd) and "this is page n°x in the paper book" (even more rarely used). As I said above, some readers allow scrolling (calibre's, and others I've forgotten the name of), but they are all bloat trying to force their library management scheme on me.
>mupdf
It's readable, that's about all that can be said about it. It doesn't even really respect stylesheets. Even as a pdf reader it is like kicking dead whales down the beach. I used to use it, but it shat up kerning in my documents. and let me fuarrrking scroll, jammit. This was figured out 40 years ago

I use zathura on computer and moon reader on android. Both work great.
Chani · 2025-08-07 08:58
A good, all-around e-book reader that can handle a variety of the most common formats is something that just doesn't exist. Every single one of them has something inexplicably idiotic about it for no apparent reason.
Balumba · 2025-08-07 11:39
I use calibre, it has many tools to manage my library.
It also allows to host everything on server, so you can read books from everywhere.

This post made me realize that doc-view can read epub, although I can't search in the document with isearch or display the table of content. For that, I had to install nov.el.
I got away from the idea of doing everything in Emacs years ago, but I'll roll with that for now.
By the way I also forgot that it's possible to run SSH on a KOReader device, which is great to transfer books without using USB.

Emacs and coolReader for epubs

epub as a whole is cancer. Its literally just a packed html-website.
However CoolReader makes it somewhat tolerable.
