Firefox: Install DownThemAll plugin. Right click page to open context menu. Select "DownThemAll". Enter "*.pdf" in the fast filter box. Select a destination directory. Then click "start" or "add paused" to queue up many downloads. All PDF files downloaded. Larger files downloads will also be accelerated (if server supports DL resume) by opening multiple connections to different parts of the file. This speeds up downloads because ISP throttling works on a per TCP/IP connection basis. If you notice the speed get throttled after a few minues, you can pause the download, then resume to gain more speed again (this is due to ISP "bursting" plans, whereby they allow the first n megabytes to download quickly thus accelerating web pages, and trick you into thinking you got a higher constant speed than you do). sage, because just general advice, not directly PDF sharing related.

The Harper's Magazine article is about a vacation cruise ship. It's by David Foster Wallace and I think it was later republished in A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. Very funny. IMO it's a palletable but very thoughtful examination of the middle class mindset.

The Metamorphis of Prime Intellect seems /cyb/ as Hell. "In a time not far from our own, Lawrence sets out simply to build an artifical intelligence that can pass as human, and finds himself instead with one that can pass as a god. Taking the Three Laws of Robotics literally, Prime Intellect makes every human immortal and provides instantly for every stated human desire. Caroline finds no meaning in this life of purposeless ease, and forgets her emptiness only in moments of violent and profane exhibitionism. At turns shocking and humorous, Prime Intellect looks unflinchingly at extremes of human behavior that might emerge when all limits are removed."

Here are some books about drugs, science and drug policy. Nutt's book, drugs without the hot air is great if you're interested about the harms/ benefits of illegal drugs. Navigation within consciousness is a trip guide from William Richards, one of the very reputable psychologists running the John Hopkins psilocybin treatment experiments. Animals and psychedelics documents cases of known psychoactive plant use by animals occurring in nature.
Netrunner · 2016-03-15 11:20
Drugs and the Future presents 13 reviews collected to present the new advances in all areas of addiction research, including knowledge gained from mapping the human genome, the improved understanding of brain pathways and functions that are stimulated by addictive drugs, experimental and clinical psychology approaches to addiction and treatment, as well as both ethical considerations and social policy. The book also includes chapters on the history of addictive substances and some personal narratives of addiction. Introduced by Sir David King, Science Advisory to the UK Government and head of the Office of Science and Technology, and Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in the USA, the book uniquely covers the full range of disciplines which can provide insight into the future of addiction, from genetics to the humanities. Written for a scientific audience, it is also applicable to non-specialists as well. In Intoxication Siegel draws upon his 20 years of groundbreaking research to provide countless examples of the intoxication urge in humans, animals, and even insects. The detailed observations of his so-called psychonauts--study participants trained to explicitly describe their drug experiences--as well as numerous studies with animals have helped him to identify the behavior patterns induced by different intoxicants. Presenting his conclusions on the biological as well as cultural reasons for the pursuit of intoxication and showing that personality and guidance often define the outcome of a drug experience, Siegel offers a broad understanding of the intoxication phenomenon as well as recommendations for curbing the negative aspects of drug use in Western culture by designing safe intoxicants. History shows that people have always used intoxicants. In every age, in every part of the world, people have pursued intoxication with plants, alcohol, and other mind-altering substances. In fact, this behavior has so much force and persistence that it functions much like our drives for food, sleep, and sex. This "fourth drive," says psychopharmacologist Ronald K. Siegel, is a natural part of our biology, creating the irrepressible demand for intoxicating substances.

Marly Krushkhova · 2016-04-01 12:46
>>3181 I don't usually help burgeoning reactionaries out, but when I do it's with hope that they'll eventually go Jungian. Bill Moyers: You've seen what happens when primitive societies are unsettled by white man's civilization. They go to pieces, they disintegrate, they become diseased. Hasn't the same thing been happening to us since myths began to disappear? Joseph Campbell: Absolutely, it has. Bill Moyers: Isn't that why conservative religions today are calling for the old-time religion? Joseph Campbell: Yes, and they're making a terrible mistake. They are going back to something that is vestigial, that doesn't serve life. Bill Moyers: But didn't it serve us? Joseph Campbell: Sure it did. Bill Moyers: I understand the yearning. In my youth I had fixed stars. They comforted me with their permanence. They gave me a known horizon. And they told me there was loving, kind, and just father out there looking down on me, ready to receive me, thinking of my concerns all the time. Now, Saul Bellow says that science has made a housecleaning of beliefs. But there was value in these things for me. I am today what I am because of those beliefs. I wonder what happens to children who don't have those fixed stars, that known horizon - those myths? Joseph Campbell: Well, as I said, all you have to do is read the newspapers. It's a mess. On this immediate level of life and structure, myths offer life models. But the models have to be appropriate to the time in which you are living, and our time has changed so fast that what was proper fifty years ago is not proper today. The virtues of the past are the vices of today. And many of what were thought to be the vices of the past are the necessities of today. The moral order has to catch up with the moral necessities of actual life in time, here and now. And that is what we are not doing. The old-time religion belongs to another age, another people, another set of human values, another universe. By going back you throw yourself out of sync with history. Our kids lose their faith in the religions that were taught to them, and they go inside.

Empire, by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt. It analyses global capitalism turning into the cyberpunk dystopia we all love and fear, and posits a idea of the multitude (the service industry, software industry, students etc) as a new proletariat. I think it's right up lainchan's ally.

I'm talking out of my ass now, because I didn't read it, but quick look reveals that for example they're throwing word "biopolitical" around. Biopolitics is very loaded term coined by Michel Foucault. They explain it a little. Do you need to know more to read it? It could be helpful, but if you don't want to write critical paper about it I don't think so. My advice is to just read things and research things you don't understand. Do it again and again and you will have less and less to research. Then maybe one day you'll be able to take up graduate level book in any number of topics and won't have to research anything while reading. It was once called erudition and there is no other way to achieve it, but I think we can all agree that with unlimited Internet access it is easier than ever.

Does anyone have any Theodor Adorno pdfs? It would be especially sick if anyone had his essays on music.
Ender · 2017-03-05 08:16
>>5165 there's a ton of adorno on soulseek. you'd probably like john maus--synthpop/hypnagogic pop musician that loves crit theory + adorno. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnMfKacI9AY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWAVB8aX2ns

Mario Rossi · 2017-03-15 09:53
>>5226 You would usually want to use a scanner for best results. Epson sanner my neighbor has. She has been letting me borrow it from time to time so I can scan stuff from uni books, I'm going to have make do with this.
