LainZine 3!

Anonymous · 2015-09-18 19:24
Be a part of History and submit to the Lainzine today! >>>Submission Deadline is November 27<<< Feel free to use any format, however please remember we are making a pdf out of text and image documents. Markdown would be appreciated, but don't let that get in the way of sending in a piece. Also remember that all submissions must be Original Creations written\made by the submitter for the Lainzine. This time around we want to make it clear that we are looking for some help with typesetting. If you want to help contact the emails below. As usual, you can submit pieces to junk0@openmailbox.org tilde@openmailbox.org hex_offender@openmailbox.org and now you can also use our new super bad ass GitLab! http://lainchan.xyz/lainzine (when signing up check your spam folder for activation) Also, we are looking at the idea of printing out the first three volumes as a collection and\or individual volumes so Lainons can order some. What do you think of this idea? Would you be interested in ordering any?

>>2040 >>>>Submission Deadline is November 27<<< Alright. Let's try to meet it this time. I'll gladly start working on my next contribution, but I'm going to just email Junk like I've been doing. >Also, we are looking at the idea of printing out the first three volumes as a collection and\or individual volumes so Lainons can order some. What do you think of this idea? Would you be interested in ordering any? It sounds cool, but it's not something I would want.

Regarding >>>/art/1621 What's the best way to handle source code in submissions? I could make a minimal version which would fit in an article, but the code has evolved since then. Could link to it on my github, but then if I forget it was in the zine and delete the repo in the future, there's a broken link.

Anonymous · 2015-09-22 12:57
>>2080 I mean, if it's a guide on how to do some punk stuff or an article about what's wrong with today's society that makes comparisons with some cyberpunk scenarios then it's fine, but writing an essay about anarchism sounds really really lame.
Anonymous · 2015-09-22 13:24
>>2080 That really cripples the zine. Politics is everywhere.
Anonymous · 2015-09-22 19:46
>>2081 >>2082 Maybe an essay just about "anarchism" is too bland for a "Lainzine" I agree but an academic essay like "Anarchy and Cyberpunk" or something along those lines which is more informative than preaching is worth the zine's pages. I think the general vibe should just be "cyberpunk (and other sorts of technologically based 'punks') counter-culture, DIY and anti-authoritarianism" and whoever has something to say relevant to those should have an opportunity for inclusion as long as they can relate it. Just getting on a soapbox and preaching your own brand of anarcho-whatever may be too much, but to give an example, if you were to write an essay on ways lains could still make new computers in a world without government, I think that'd be okay.
kk · 2015-09-22 19:53
If i could say one thing, pertaining to choice of articles in the lainzine Last time, we decided to publish a few stories about crime that some people really disliked. Some people really liked Night Ops, some people thought it was too edgy, especially when compared to the other story that was submitted to us about raiding cabins. The last thing I've ever wanted to do, as editor, is to abridge what people have to say - this paper wouldn't be underground if I did. So, I take all complaints of that nature with a grain of salt. I think that, right now, the lainzine doesn't quite know what it wants to be. So, I'd like to make some suggestions. Not to be authoritarian about it, but to try to give it some direction. What the lainzine seems like to me: First and foremost, a scene, a place for artists and punks to drop lines and pioneer new ideas. A place to share code or protips for cyber peeps What I think we should avoid: Saying things that have been said already. That's what bibliographies are for.
Anonymous · 2015-09-22 19:59
>>2092 > if you were to write an essay on ways lains could still make new computers in a world without government, I think that'd be okay. Well clearly I would relate it back to the themes relevant to Lainchan. Anarchism has a lot of ties to these things, which is why I wanted to write about it. I wasn't going to go with some boring soykaf about how you should follow my particular brand of anarchism or you're reactionary scum. I was thinking more along the lines of talking about using technology to subvert power structures, or something else within that line of thought. I'm also personally interested in relating existentialism and anarchism, and I think there's a lot to be said about the two in relation to modern technology or maybe counter-culture. I'm more interested in exploring ideas than preaching at anybody. Maybe I can work up a draft and see what people think?
Anonymous · 2015-09-22 23:08
>>2096 A draft might help. I wasn't accusing anyone of anything, but rather I was responding to that one lainon's concern about the zine just having a bunch of bland anarchy manifestos that don't really have any relation to the general themes of the site. My best advice is start with a question and ask yourself if this is a question lains would care about one way or another. Don't concern yourself with whether the answer favors anything like anarchism, just find the question and work from there. Again, to use my example, I'd start with a question like "If there's no government, what happens to the internet?" lay out all the possible answers one may give and then explore the viability of each answer based on my research and experience. One thing one of my professors told me that I find valuable is: when you are writing a paper, even if you think you are sure what the answer is, always start with the question and not the answer.

I'm writing about homemade electric weapons (aka tasers) and other kinds of electric defense and I have two questions: 1: Can I write about this? I plan to give detailed information on how to build a taser out of electronic junk. I say this because I don't want anybody who doesn't knows what he's doing to shock himself. I've added a disclaimer just in case. I guess the complexity of the project should be enough to keep newbies from making anything dangerous. 2: It's hard to give instructions about making electronic circuits without using pictures of the components one must find in order to do so and the circuit itself. Could I use some pictures? I would like to include as few as necessary, most of them being lineal drawings and minimal. I would gladly accept advice on how to write this kind of articles in an aesthetically pleasant way. I've been looking for similar articles to get some inspiration.

My main source of internet is tethering from my shitty T-Mobile phone. After my first month of data, my data speed gets throttled down to 128Kb/s. However, I have found that not all sites are throttled. For example, SoundCloud doesn't get throttled for some reason (was Net Neutrality supposed to fix this?) Yes, you'd be expected to appreciate the artistry of the contributors in a way that the commercial editors don't, but you'd also be much, much stricter with the standards and tone of what you do accept. Don't edit the submissions, but don't have any hesitation to reject them. Thin but dense & focused zines are always preferable over bloated and amateur ones. That said, get ahold of Semiotext(e)'s USA anthology if you can (don't have my copy with me or I'd post pics) - I've heard good things about semiotext(e)'s SF also - for an example of high standard cyberpunk collection coming from the period when it was still fresh, radical and didn't have a self conscious 'cyberpunk' name or stale tropes. Radical being the most important imo - anyone who thinks Gibson and not Burroughs is the godfather of cyberpunk doesn't know what he's talking about.

It's mostly coming from the perspective of nomadic furniture that you can either disassemble and carry with you or cheap enough that you can toss it out/recycle the parts and rebuild it once in your new location. There's also a more radical reoccurring concept for the living cube. A minimalist home space that you can bring with you everywhere so no matter what modern highrise apartment you move into, you can maintain your consistent space(s). Some examples

You could also convert the LaTeX archive to HTML using Pandoc[4]. Much more secure than PDF format, that have lots[5] of vulnerabilities and is extremely bloated. Or you can generate at least a postscript file $ pdflatex -output-format=dvi example.tex && dvips example.dvi The HTML would also, of course, support webm videos and audio files like ogg... The LaTeX font rendering is the best available at the moment. You can also activate the package "microtype" for even better quality: $ sudo tlmg install microtype /* Then add to your example.tex the following*/ \usepackage{microtype} /*Use pdflatex to generate the file*/ $ pdflatex example.tex [1] http://www.lyx.org/ [2] https://www.ctan.org/pkg/papertex [3] http://www.ctan.org/pkg/newspaper [4] http://pandoc.org/ [5] http://www.malwaretracker.com/piepdf2.php

I work for a company that has an industrial printer and a spiral binder so if there was actual interest in physical copies I could easily make some. I'd even consider donating a few to be sold to keep the servers running.

>>2371 >>2372 Lemme play with some numbers and see what I can do, tomorrow I'll get on the IRC and ask around, too. Then I'll need to hammer down paper weights, cover weight etc. etc. etc.

>>2394 If you know LaTeX, why the fuarrrk do you keep using the soykaf from Adobe? You are just prejudicing this community spreading bloated archives in pdf. If you don't have time to do it, just leave it to other people.
アウト · 2015-11-09 10:46
>>2395 Adobe is industry standard and pretty much unavoidable if you are trying to make a document accessible to a number of people ~ we have to study its programs at University which I think is total soykaf but they are adamant it is necessary.

Hi Lainzine, I've had a lot on the mind and wrote a thing. You may publish it if you'd like. Joy There's something I've often wondered, whether true only God could tell. Turn to the soulless scourge below; Do you think they know Joy as well? My friend, I'm afraid you've blundered; It really seems you've lost your worth. All they have is their time to bide, in that forsaken hell called Earth. ~Null

How do you feel about where content is from? I have something very very long and rambling that I've been working on for a while. I was going to put it both on my own website as a .PDF, and also throw the .PDF on I2P torrents.

>>2040 Are we supposed to email you before being able to access the website? It's saying that my connection is refused.

>>2365 Here. Have you guys hammered down an about amount of pages? Also have you guys thought about how big you want each page to be. I know putting it in a physical format makes a lot of logistical problems, so if we want to do Lanezine 4, or a best of lanezine from the top down to be physical that'd be cool, too.
Anonymous · 2015-11-22 06:59
>>2461 no idea how many pages lainzine 3 is gonna be, sadly. size is up to you. Do you think you could make print releases of volume 1 and 2? sorry there isn't more to work with, Junk's been very busy with college life and stuff

Am I allowed to submit artwork, a painting for instance, for inclusion?
Anonymous · 2015-11-22 11:42
>>2488 of course
Anonymous · 2015-11-23 12:39
>>2461 The size format should be ISO A5.

I'm whipping up something nice, a monologue from the perspective of The Wired as an enlightened manifestation of the universe, when the wall between The Wired and reality falls in full. About how all souls and information became subsumed into a Brahman-like whole. Stay tuned.

Hey guys! I can't think of stuff to put in the editors section of LZ3. If anyone wants to write letters to the editor I will reply in the publication if they're sent to junk0@openmailbox.org

I'm going to start working on an art piece for issue #4. I've held out on submitting because of a lack of faith in my work... but next issue I'm submitting. The fact that you guys make this brings such joy to my life and I want to be a part of it. Thank you!
