How many times have you lains watched the SEL series? I watched it once, going to watch it again it's the best anime I've ever watched.
Incognito · 2017-04-24 19:11
same
I don't think I got it but I really enjoyed it
H.R. Giger · 2017-04-25 00:29
First I watched ~8 episodes on stream, then my internet connexion died for a week and I had lost my momentum and watched something else.
Then a year later I picked it up again and watched it all.
Since then I've watched some individual scenes dozens of time (ドキドキ), and I listen to the episodes while I play to get my ears accustomed to japanese, but I never really watched the whole series again.
Maybe I'll try to get a friend into it and watch it with him.

I watched it like 3 times now.
Solid 9/10, but it's not as good as Texhnolyze.
Case · 2017-05-09 01:58
Recently had a very long flight and re-watched the series. I really enjoy the last half of the show, I think that eps 8 is my favorite.
Chan Siu Ming · 2017-05-21 01:18
first watched it a couple months ago
i just started a rewatch and am at layer:05 at the moment
Cutter · 2017-06-12 03:24
I've lost count. I've definitely seen it at least four times and I'm still noticing new things every time I watch it.
It's definitely a show that needs to be watched at least three times: one to see it, one to actually understand the plot, and one to look for all of the symbolism in the show.
Judge Fang · 2017-06-28 21:24
I watched it four times. The first time I watched it, I honestly didn't really like it nor understand it, and the main motivation I had to rewatch it was actually to understand what it was that I saw. The more I watched it, though, the more I liked it. Having recently finished it for the fourth time, I can easily say that it's one of my favorite anime and one of the best that I've ever seen.
Hacker · 2017-12-08 16:00
I've watched it about six times. First time I didn't get it, but I liked the idea of a hacker-lisper-girl, who somehow afects the reality like a sysadmin of the World. Every next time I watched it, I saw more details and it seemed to me that I understand it more (but not completely anyway). And now I must admit that I understand nothing of this show, besides what I've managed to understand when I watched it first time.
Nanashi No Gombe · 2017-12-18 21:48
Three. I watched it all this weekend again, it's technically shorter than I remembered if you count the minutes, yet seems to take much longer than those minutes would imply.
...if that makes any kind of goddamn sense.
Pris · 2017-12-21 16:01
On my third run introducing it to a friend for the first time. Still picking up on things and lining it all up.
Guthrie · 2018-01-13 23:06
Back in middle school and high school i used to watch it bi annually, then annually. now i watch it on special occasions. so i have no idea. i'm sure i could do the math but i sort of like not knowing

I watched the first three episode three times and always stopped finding it boring. But I love this place, so I finally saw all and found the series spectacular.
I think it's a matter of how you fell at the moment, SEL has a moral of

Yup same here. I've honestly never finished the series because I binge like half of the eps then forget about it for like a month then go back and watch from the beginning and it just cycles like that.

Around the time of the last Schumann peak flap, I search-engined images of the huge detectors required to even separate the SR from background noise, to show idiot hippies on SM the science behind their woo and paranoia. Which is how I found a snippet from Layer 9 on Youtube. Apart from "Akira", I'd never watched an entire anime: there was something about the art style and sound design of the clip that really intrigued me, so I found the SEL Wiki. A fictional re-interpretation of the internet called the Wired? From 1998? I had to watch this series!
24 hours after watching the Layer 9 excerpt, I was in tears, sat in front of my monitor at 3 am, emotionally and intellectually shattered. I'd watched the entire series in two night sessions. I also knew I'd just watched one of the most profound and prescient works of art ever created - at least from my POV. How may times have I watched it since then? Well, it's the only work, apart from "Eraserhead" that I can quote every line of.
I've smoked DMT - once - and work with TCP/IP. I may not have understood after the first viewing, but I definitely "got it".
One thought: I wonder what percentage of the people who have obviously been deeply affected by this series were adopted as very young children?
William Holtzer · 2018-05-09 18:08
Just rewatched it for the third time a few days ago, and that was the one where it really clicked for me. I've been writing down lots of theories and ideas that have been coming to mind. I love this show.

Only once. When I get free time, I'll watch it again.
Lainon · 2022-05-04 11:35
An old thread! I wasn't even on lainchan when it started lol. I only watched SEL once but wanted to watch it more times ever since then. Sadly I'm always exhausted at the end of the day because I'm a wage slave :(
Turner · 2022-09-06 13:35
Watched it slowly over the course of a few months. Affected me deeply, I resonated a lot with Lain as a character in the early episodes and the commentary on the digital age in the later episodes was fascinating
Donna Hawthorne · 2022-12-21 20:44
I can't say for sure, i lost count after the 5th time, and i keep finding more messages in the series every time i watch an episode. i've also sometimes watched until around layer:08 and then started from the beginning again

Excellent. this is imo the best way of watching the series.
Sabo Engle · 2023-01-03 11:54
i watched today the first episode and i'am not sure if i can continue. tit was bit boring...
are all episodes like that? don't get me wrong, I don't tell SEL is bad, I like to know what makes for a linechaner so special, because i am not one of you. thanks in advance

I can tell you that the first episode was kind of a prototype if you read the author's interviews. Anyways, the show is really about a rising tension over the episodes, so i'd stick to it. There are only 13 episodes anyway... I'm rewatching right now and i really wish there was more haha
I can't really tell you what made it so much special to me tho, i would spoil it XD. Think it like this: every scene was created by the authors for a reason, try to understand the reason every time. When you finish go lurk at lain.wiki!

A thread to tell my crazy story. I think my lack of willingness to watch SEL back in the 2000s when I was a young shy teen myself have correlated with a massive incident in my life...
Watched SEL when I was 13 or 14. The TV channel have never reported airing SEL officially, even through I remember seeing a huge "next: Serial Experiments Lain" plaque, the opening, the "present daaaay... Present... TIME AHAHAHAHA" opening and Nezumi the grinning hacker from lyr07 Society.
I also remember giving up on watching SEL thinking out loud "Maybe a grown-up from Japan would get it. I don't get it."
And, when I was 14 and a half, something really heartbreaking happened to me. %%I am so scared now thinking I have offended Lain. I am so sorry! I am just not feeling well today... Wish I was 14 again so I could rewarch the story via the way it was intended to be watched: very mysterious and very technical experience that cannot be confirmed... I am so sorry I am so sorry I am so sorry; please forgive me u_u %%

Don't worry about it. You're not exactly the first person to understand SEL on the first viewing.
Honestly, I can kind of relate to wishing to have discovered the show as a teenager as well, but then you have to ask other questions, questions like "would it have actually made that much of an impact on me had I watched it the whole way through?" Life is so full of weird and winding paths, and past a certain point there's no use in contemplating all the other ways it could have gone without making yourself feel worse.
I don't know your life, nor do I really want to, but whatever happened when you were 14, I really don't think that Lain had anything to do with it, or that watching the show would do anything directly to change it. Whatever you're going through, just do your best to step back and try to ground yourself. All will be well.

the first time i didn't understand but i cried because of the end,
then i tried to understand watching youtube explaining lain and etc... the only one who made me understand was a long site that explains every scene of SEL, and i watched the second time after i became a lain fan
Ivan Petrov · 2026-04-28 16:59

>Honestly, I can kind of relate to wishing to have discovered the show as a teenager as well, but then you have to ask other questions
Except... I had been watching *some pieces* of SEL as a teen (lur07, that Nezumi guy in VR headset smiling like some xbox360 kid and such) but never got to watch the whole series despite being able to *find someone to borrow SEL from* and despite being acquainted to Serial Experiments Lain.
That the thing. There was one particular scene that I *really* wish I had seen back then. I could have learned something really important from it.
But you're right, theres no need to cry over every mistake. I could have failed in a similar fasion months later over something else, after all.

But still, watching S.E.lain back in 2000s and not remembering it was rather rude of me. It probably was pwn-worthy, even.
I am currently playing the game, by the way. Feels very comforting, actually. Whoops, my bath have overflown, goodbye!
