It was interesting to me in ~2004 or whenever I first watched it. I've failed any attempts to rewatch since then - once my desire to get a taste of the aesthetic/feel of the show is satisfied, usually within one or two episodes, I turn it off for another several years. I think it served as a good springboard for curiosity for me as a teen, though.

The artwork, the way it addressed how they thought the internet era was going to be with this poor girl effectively predicting the escape and further isolation it can bring.
Layer 5 was so fun too

I dunno if Op's image is meant to mean something in this case, but it implies that EP and SEL somehow ought/are expected to give some "illuminating" or otherwise deep insights on life and other related stuff, but I think this is a far cry, as both of them are more or less structured to be open for interpretation.
And no, this isn't an "ackchyually" post by which I'd be trying to correct OP's blatant mistakes and whatnot, this is simply my opinion on the subject.
As for OP's questions, I very much liked SEL. In particular I liked it on the similar basis with EP, as it's somewhat open for interpretation, or that it challenges the watcher to piece the puzzle together (I'm not 100% sure if this is an acceptable idiom in English, but w/e), instead of just handing it over, so to speak.
Also, just because it is so damn trippy to watch through. Also, also, I think that the relationship between Arisu and Lain is 1) relatable and 2) bittersweet, which is enjoyable to witness.

I like the feel of SEL and Ergo Proxy from the picrel. It feels really comfy. I consider a show worthy, if it makes me think about something. SEL made me think about consciousness and the role of technology in our lives. It was also full of links to interesting (even if incorrect) hypotheses and theories.
As for Ergo Proxy, I mainly liked the feel and the science fiction part of it. The vision of the world showed in the anime was good in itself. There are also things I don't understand - a theory of something connected to literature hidden in the anime, but feeling comfy compensates the lack of knowledge.
In my opinion people not liking anime like these don't like the atmosphere or don't want to think. It's not a bad thing - some people like to chill and watch something simple, whereas I like to dive into surreal reality of science fiction and get depressed in a positive way, feel the trill of uncertainty and mystery.
I also get emotionally attached to some characters - I love Lain.

What was with all of the obscure references to stuff like pic related in Lain? Does it mean something? Is there some hidden message that I'm missing? I didn't understand what happened at the end of the series either, so maybe I'm just retarded.

It made me feel big brainy.

>the way it addressed how they thought the internet era was going to be
It merely mirrored how the internet was. The writer, probably, participated in early internet.
>this poor girl effectively predicting the escape and further isolation it can bring.
Lain is not socially isolated because of the internet. She would be socially isolated anyway. She was a shy girl who rarely did much beyond her schoolwork or her thoughts, until she came to computers and computer networks. The thing that computer networks did was to accentuate how much else there was. Without that, she might have just continued living a quiet life in a sparse room, occasionally reading some intellectually stimulating literature. In a sense, I would have liked the old modem-BBSes, where you would post something, to only get a reply after months.
