>be me
>watch SEL
>see Lain Iwakura
>she's loner
>she's shut-in
>she spends a lot of time in The Wired
>she doesn't have that many friends
>mfw I can see myself in Lain
Is this supposed to be a good thing? I think that the show is trying to discourage this type of behaviour but the fact that I can relate to Lain like this really messes with that message. What do I

Most protagonists are designed to be relatable to some extent so don't worry
Lunch · 2019-09-27 07:45
Thats like probably the story of every lainon.
Its a good thing if you reject the physical world and go into the world of the occult.
Cowboy · 2019-09-27 08:03
Not every story is a parable. SEL shows you Lain, explores her character and existence and lets you come to your own conclusions.
If you want a "DO NOT", look at Masami Eiri.

It really depends on what kind of person you are lain.
Jean Dupont · 2019-09-27 19:32
SEL is about us. Lain is us.
I think SEL has a positive message at the end, just not one that's comforting or sugar-coated. The other aspect of Lain's personality is that she is genuinely a good person and really loves people, so much that she erases herself when she realizes how much she scared Alice and others.
Unfortunately, lainon, you can't do that, you're not a deity. But you can be a really good friend and a good person. Try your best at doing that. :)

Keep in mind we never hear her internal monologue. Whatever you think Lain is are your projections.
>>372
>explores her character
But it really doesn't. It shows her reacting to a small set of situations.
>>375
I can't exactly agree but the overall message here is good. Depending on how you look at it Lain is defintely not of the same form as you and I. Either lesser or higher. She's our construction and she deemed it best to not take part in our existence.
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2019-09-27 20:31
I mean later on in the series she gets enlightened to the nature of reality and realizes that the only way to stop her sin is to stop existing and then realized she couldn't delete herself without becoming god (which from a polytheist/animist point of view is more like becoming an aspect of god I'd think) so be careful with spending too much time on the internet while comparing yourself too much to lain cause she overcame (and maybe killed in some sense) the god of the wired, and ascending to godhood is a real hassle of a path to go down unless all other options are exhausted.

One cannot truly comprehend Lain.
Neo · 2019-09-28 14:11
I don't think this is a good thing. If you focus too much on the girl you'll end up being one of those lain-worshipping losers. Focus on the concepts and move on from SEL to deeper stuff. If you see "let's all love lain" stamped on something, know that it's an autistic soicafhole.
>>371
Lots of occultism is bullshit on steroids but I can't even say I disagree with this. Instead of opting purely for imaginary, you should try to find something that accounts for both instead.
>>375
>SEL is about us. Lain is us.
>Unfortunately, lainon, you can't do that, you're not a deity.
Therefore lain isn't us.

The show isn't trying to do anything but make you think about your place in the world and how you relate to others. So just think, think long and hard about your position in society. And hopefully after a time you will find peace in your own existence. Some people are shut-ins thats not inherently bad, but some people are shut-ins because they haven't found their place. Eventually you should hope to achieve self-actualization, the final culmination of the self you've been building over the span of your lifetime (and thousands of others before it). It takes mental fortitude and work though.
I've been trying for years and I'm only halfway there though, I know what I am but I haven't found the place to fully be me yet. Sometimes I think I need to learn another language to achieve it but who knows. Just keep striving for a better tomorrow and even if it never comes at least you can say to yourself when you lie awake at night that you tried your damnedest to reach it. I don't even know what I'm saying anymore, just Love Lain and try your best Lainon

I meant "she is us" as in her character is modeled after people like us. That is why she is so relatable. She's a stand-in for every other internet schizo, except in her case it just so happens that she actually is a god, which makes the story interesting.

I feel like the true character in SEL that was modeled after internet schizos like us was that nerd who wore all of this tech and VR junk on his body then fell in a ditch and died while drooling out the side of his mouth.
Dr. X · 2019-09-29 03:37
It describes the events therein without judgement. It's not about, as many seem to think, grand themes. It's not even about lain. It's about Lain, no doubt, but the voice, is Alice. The whole show, it's just a study of that one character. Which character?
I relate to lain. The first is the most effective description of my most major characteristic: Whatever, I either comprehend, or have nothing, vague feelings, of.
What started as a vague feeling has grown into a conviction. Of this conviction, I am still mid-study. Serial Experiments Lain (1998) starts, LAYER: 01 - WEIRD, showing an empty street. Bleak? No. Bleak merely in it's initial impression. Blank. lain exits, door latches. steps down stairs. The shade is splotched, variegate color, shape, size,,. (Shade shows her mind. The splotches, her thoughts. Her shadow is most proximate. Their qualities correspond. Her thoughts, unbeknowst; but how we know about them?)
The train, her classroom, diner/foyer, bedroom, desk, navi,, are, contrariwise, composed in detail. She comprehends these places. The people in them? Alice, Julie, Reika; lain's father, mother, sister; Chisa: all known. Everyone else? Outlines! or a vague superfice. Sometimes merely shadows of themselves.
父さんのNAVIな事ム室で書棚は…
神様? Another internet schizo.
People (including her) might think she's a god, but that's, at best, syneidesia, at worst, delusion. Don't forget that there are many lains. There are plain lain, cyberia lain, wired lain. Each it's own. The first are of lain. The last is of another. Perhaps it's Knights, perhaps Tatibana. Who? I don't know. It's an interesting instance of identity theft. They take the identity, but enhance it. She also benefits from it: her personality matches wired lain's ethos. Her involvement, though, at most, is thematic. Much of these are likely by design. How much power lain has, how much power she things she has, I don't know. I do know that Lain, whoever she is, is powerful. 神。
Notice, at the end of Layer:01 - WEIRD, her thoughts, thematically singular, mostly special, with relations generalizing; close-up, complex, broad angular azure, medial round wispy magenta, small red circles--almost-dots, faint dark-purple sur-smear'd; seeing Chisa, her thoughts to light-azure, all special, theme smaller; back to purple…つづく

He wasn't an internet schizo, but he does almost exemplify cyberpunk. The only schtick is that he was an idiot that messed with powerful people, thinking, incorrectly, that he was their superior. He was not even their peer. He died in a ditch.
He almost exemplifies consumers of cyberpunk, except that he did something significant. What he did was stupid, and inconsequential, but he did do it, and it was significant.

Pretty obviously once you make the connection of cyberia to the counter culture with people like timothy leary and terrance mckenna.
The relationship between drugs, spirituality and cyberspace has been long known in inner circles of the psychadelic elite.

Identity theft. That is an interesting way to look at it. My thoughts were that wired-Lain was a split personality / alter ego, shown emerging in-the-flesh when she visits via the blacksuits an ostensible Tatibana office (Layer:07 - SOCIETY), so I'm not convinced that

Maybe if you were so inconsequential and nobody cares about you. If you did anything of significant value (or antivalue), then that's it, you're stuck with an inalienable legacy. Lain, for example, has been idolized by many WIRED users. Lain killing herself would not erase that. In fact, young death is a pretty good way to confirm a extant legacy. e.g. Musicians' in the ``24 club.''
