Apple Whisper Text to Speech

Chani · 2018-04-29 19:26
You are probably familiar with the Whisper text to speech at the beginning of every Episode/Layer. This voice is also used in Suda51 games like The Silver Case and No More Heroes. It's exclusive to an old version of Mac OS X, and I wonder if there is any sort of Emulator for that program. Or is installing OSX in a virtual console a possibility?

No need to bump threads on /lain/. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ShoutOut/SerialExperimentsLain > Layer ## at the beginning of each episode is said by Apple's Whisper voice in Mac OS text-to-speech software. >Or is installing OSX in a virtual console a possibility? I don't see why it wouldn't be, however I don't know where you'd obtain a copy of it though.

>>172 I fuarrrking knew it man. It isn't an old vesion of Mac OS X, it is mac OS 9. I always get this mac feel when i hear that whisper come up. Like i get this weird old macintosh urk every single time layer X is said. And now i remember why. You will need to find a way to emulate os 9. It used to be a pain in the ass seeing as it is ppc but comps are so powerful now im sure there is an easier way.

>>196 I'll correct myself a bit, the voices were carried over from os 9 to os x. However when Lain was made OS X didn't exist yet.

From what I know the Whisper voice was carried into OSX, but whether or not it still exists in modern versions is anyone's guess. Your best bet would be to grab a copy of OS 9 as well as SheepShaver, a PowerPC Mac emulator. It's not too hard to set up.

the program espeak can replicate it pretty well espeak -v whisper --stdin Layer 4 Religion ctrl-d You might need to play a little bit with amplitude and etc though to get the exact feel of SEL.

>>206 This is pretty easy, maybe espeak is easier. Once you have Mac OS installed (doesn't have to even be 9 I think. It was added in Macintalk 3. Like System 7 era. Once you have it running, Just go to the Speech control panel, or use AppleScript to have it say stuff. Apple has System 7 install disks still hosted on their FTP, though they can be hard to find sometimes.

>>219 espeak -v whisper -s 95 --stdin Sounds close to SEL
