Hi. I've scanned the ten page booklet of the rare Bootleg soundtrack box, and I was wondering if anybody wanted to take a crack at translating it. I know nothing of Japanese, so all I know is that it's a discussion between Ueda and Akira Takemoto with some commentary about the tracklisting for each episode. Never seen anything of this online outside of my own scanning this, so hopefully even if nobody wants to translate it it'll be of interest to you. I made some initial scans weeks ago that I posted on 4chan, but I've gone back and rescanned it so that all the text is legible, as some lines near the binding were quite blurry in my previous ones. I'll go ahead and post all the scans of the other pages in subsequent posts.
Also, does anybody know just how limited this was back when it was released? All I know is that nowadays it rarely shows up for sale anywhere at an affordable price.

I know just enough japanese that I could roughly get the meaning with a dictionary.
But it would take me many hours and I'm a bit busy these days, maybe I'll do it the week-end in ten days, if nobody does before me.

Well if you do decide to, you'll have my thanks. There's no rush.

Well the week-end is almost over here at UTC+1 and I've still not done much. I started transcribing the images by hand, but that took a lot of time with all the kanji to look up.
So I found an OCR software online, I didn't have time to go over the result yet but it didn't look that good. Hopefully it will still save me some time on the kanji.
Anyway, enough excuses, here comes the transcription and translation of the table of contents, as a token of me not completely forgetting about this. I hope it won't seem to awkward, english is only a second language.

TN: 美香 is the first name of Lain's older sister, formed with the kanji for beauty and perfume. (I'm saying this 'cause I had forgotten her name entirely.)

+19 Cheshire Cat
TN: Doesn't seem to be the standard katakana transliteration, but it couldn't be anything else.

TN: katalana transliteration for either a surname, or a chemical process ; I can't remember either having been mentionned in the show
+30 track 44
+31 Lain and Eiri
TN: Eiri's name is formed with the kanji for England and profit. I've always seen it transliterated as Eiri, but it seems the correct spelling would be Eri, with a short e. (For those who don't know, ei is a long e in japanese, not a e followed by an i.) And even then it's an usual pronunciation, with the more common one being Hidetoshi. Was Eiri Chinese or something ?

Thanks for this, I appreciate what you've done so far. Hopefully the images were clear enough for the OCR software - that was about as clear as I could get it with the scanner.

The amount of time I'm spending on this would be hilarious if it wasn't my time. I was seriously overestimating my skills in japanese.
Bad news : the OCR is pretty crappy.
Good news : the part it got right are the hardest for me (kanji), so it should still save some time. It's interesting how the simplest characters are the one that are the hardest to recognize for the machine, since the differences between them are pretty subtle.
Good news : Now I'm feeling invested in this and want to see it done.
Bad news : it will probably still take me months to find enough time to get to the end.
Bad news : the results will probably be a mess barely more understandable than the japanese. When it doesn't make sense, it's not me messing with you, it's just that I couldn't make any sense of the original.
Bof.
Before I dump today's work, here are some common kanji that I won't bother translating each time :
上田 : Ueda
Takemoto

Will I tell you ?
So, to celebreate our first scene (???), it's the "going to school" scene. <S1>
What sort of work was requested ? Matching the scenes ?
Yeah, they asked for not too many notes, kinda, going to school at two places, and long.
What does it even mean ?
This, and Ectoplasm, in 3 places that was the request. There was just a memo on an A4 sheet.
Hmm, that sounds just like Tsuruoka.
(Yota Tsuruoka, sound director according to wikipedia.)
And that was the first one so I was strugling.
Even if they use it it's going to take some fine editing.
Ah, it's the Ectoplasm scene.
短い!
So short !
Crazy short.
The original tune is a bit longer though.
It has already began. <S3>
Eh ? I can't hear it.
It's long and repetitive, but where does it start ?
It's already getting quiter, isn't it.
I can't hear it. Ah, I just heard it. But it's a different taste.
The order was, something with as little sound as possible.
The directors agreed, no melody thing.
I was told to start with ethnic percussions.
I tried lots of drums and such, but in the end, it's dying.
There is more melody in the second half but ...
<S4>
Ah, this bell sound is from me, but the rest is from Kasamatsu.
(Kasamatsu Kouji, sound designer or something.)
So a cooperation ?
Well no, it's a work that's not distinct from SE (sound effect),
I think the result came from a good mix.
Cyberia, from the begining please. <S5>
On the net, I was accused of being tired.
The instruction of the director was "Punk". Eh !? Shouldn't it be "Techo" ? I asked.
One word answer, "I hate that" he said.
And, they were not using something they hated, right?
Well, this is the tune I painstakingly made from this narrow place.
Yeah, Nakahara (who ?) and I, somehow, when we had no sound and were watching this,
I apologize to the persons who were drawing, but we called it "ethnic dance".
You swallow the Accelerator and, slowly, you go crazy, and that's how I composed this.
This isn't "Punk". Our staff doesn't go clubbing and all, right.
I was the one who knew but, anyway, it was the first time.
I was trying to reproduce the place the directors wanted.
What's next ? Anyway I'm not hiding. <S6>
What a show ! I love this cutie running.<S7>
Yeah yeah. Unrelated to the music.
<S8>
Yamaoto Toshi · 2018-03-12 21:53
Yeah, I gave up on the translation notes too, as it would double the length of the text, and would basically be nothing but :
> I didn't understand what he meant
> this doesn't make sense to me, does it to you ?
> aaa japanese is hard

Got some info on Nakahara from the Bluray booklet. He worked on the CG, title screens, and interfaces in Lain.
