What was the point of this character? He never interacted with Lain in any way and his story arc about getting to Connecticut feels out of place.

You might think that Marty is a minor and insignificant character, however I think he represents something very important. Marty is like Lain's opposite. Where Lain continually falls into her suicide ideology, Marty continues to be optimistic, although he becomes more dependent on Lain. Marty seems to repesent the small part of us that continues to be optimistic no matter what and his developing lack of independence seems to be referencing how as we become more depressed our happiness becomes a slave to our sadness. I think they underutilized him, but I understand as he is somehwat of a comedic relief character. The whole Connecticut thing is pretty hard to decipher, but I think it might be a reflection of Lain's genuine interest in the world trying to make one last attempt at taking over. Unfortunately it didn't work, though, and Marty completely disappeared afterwards showing how Lain had finally resigned herself to her fate. Until the final episode where they reunite at the end. That was genuinely such an emotional scene and I'm so happy for Lain.
