Cult Games

Acolyte · 2018-06-24 03:39
Post good (or otherwise notable) games with dedicated cult followings. The more obscure, the better
Yamaoto Toshi · 2018-06-24 09:59
Both the Super Famicom and the PS1 games.

>>995 I've played the first one and currently going through the second. Easily some of my favorite games of all time.
Naomi Nascimento · 2018-06-25 17:19
Panzer Dragoon, all the games but specifically Saga. I'd say it counts as obscure at this point. Not sure about the dedicated following part, but there is certainly small group of people who love the game to death.
Leto Atreides I · 2018-06-26 08:29
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.

Neocron.

Gunman Chronicles.

>>1006 This was the good soykaf. Hard to believe a lot of people who grew up with Half Life ignored it. For a story about cheesy space cowboys it was surprisingly good. Thanks for making have a small nostalgia trip.

Nitronic Rush and its successor Distance. Kinda niche games, but they (especially the latter) have a very dedicated and creative communities. Also very cyber.
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2018-08-10 20:00
Pretty fun roguelike-lite. Predetermined quests but the content of them and what happens along the way is traditional roguelike. Futurist themes too
Morpheus · 2018-08-11 22:00
>>1001 I bought Neocron but never played it, didn't notice it needed a credit card to play and when I had my cc the game was already dead. I still occasionally listen to its soundtrack. >>1361 Seconded, great game.

>>999 panzar dragoon's aesthetic is so good. music is amazing too. shame the saturn had to flop so hard
Masami Eiri · 2018-09-02 08:22
Is touhou obscure? My own perception is too biased to be able to tell. Probably more niche than obscure, really. Either way it has a HUGE cult following. And for me, the added bonus that you can't sink too many hours of the day into it, as your fingers will start to hurt after an hour.

Yume Nikki. Most here probably know what it is or are vaguely aware of it, but it's a freeware RPGMaker game from 2004 where you explore the dreams of the main character and try to find a bunch of items called effects, some of which give you different abilities. There's no story, exposition, dialogue or combat. It has a cult following for sure (fanart, music remixes, fangames, even the imageboard Uboachan), and some commercial spin-offs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Mcp_XX0ews
Spike Spiegel · 2018-09-02 18:52
>>1424 Maybe the first five games could be considered obscure, they're on the PC-98 which is kind of a favorite machine among "obscure gaming" communities. Plus playing them means setting up an emulator and getting some disk images, so it's more effort than just running an EXE.
Miho Iwakura · 2018-09-02 19:11
>>1428 http://easyrpg.org can be used instead of the default windows binaries, can run on linux and even on android.
XERXES · 2018-09-02 21:38
>>1429 A friend of of a friend provided me with the emulator and the five iso, and luckily it all worked out of the box with wine. Less luckily, those games aren't very good, I suppose the hardware wasn't able to compute patterns complex enough to make it interesting. Or maybe ZUN wasn't experienced enough yet. (After all, most other danmaku that I've played have very little in the way of pretty patterns, ZUN might have invented that.) And then there is the very first one which is a completely different genre, making it at least interesting if not good. I would definitly recommend playing it given the chance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3YmmdgcHb8

>>1001 Still playable for free right now. Tried a couple of times. Wish I had the time/inclination to immerse myself in it. Hard to get past some MMO cliches though (fighting giant rats in a sewer). Very cool game though. Not quite Deus ex in art direction, but it's dated geometry and textures have their own cyb charm.
apadeh · 2018-10-08 18:47
diablo 2 for sure is one of pioneer of real time strategy games out there. I still playing it until now.
Terzibashjian · 2019-03-26 01:02
>>988 They just announced a Bloodlines 2. The trailer...actually looks pretty bad. It's apparently being made by the developers of Chivalry, and it shows in the combat system. The lighting looks completely wrong, like they're using the look of Cyberpunk 2077, which is too bad since atmosphere was a pretty important part of the first game. The writing staff looks alright, though, so I still have hope.
Faye Valentine · 2019-03-26 20:38
>>1497 >diablo 2 for sure is one of pioneer of real time strategy games Are you trolling us? It's a action RPG, a very good one if I may add, but it's not a RTS (making a zoomancer isn't event close to making it a RTS).
Zhora · 2019-03-28 11:49
>>1854 Game hasn't even come out, yet they've announced season passes and pre-order bonuses. Its going to be a highly politicised, hollow cash-grab. Not gonna touch it with a 10 mile pole.
Acid Burn · 2019-03-29 20:19
>>1857 >season passes and pre-order bonuses That marketing scheme is, as I understand it, normal for Paradox (the publisher), but their games are still generally considered "good." >highly politicised I think people are overreacting about this. They said that the game would touch on politics, but that only makes sense in Vampire: the Masquerade. I think they meant politics as in "the complex dynamics of how individuals and groups get and keep social power" more than politics as in "the topics that everyone wants to argue about right now." That said, I doubt that it will manage to nail things like its predecessor did, even if everyone involved is talented and passionate. Honestly, they should have called it Vampire the Masquerade -- Awakening or something instead of using the Bloodlines name. At the end of the day, though, it's really rather difficult to predict this far ahead whether a game will be good or not. I don't think the process of making a good game is well-understood, currently.

Donna Hawthorne · 2019-03-30 09:56
>>1857 Season passes and pre-order bonus' are common these days (not endorsing them whatsoever though) On the other hand, I want this game to be good but they're putting 'gender pronouns' in the character creation screen. Yeah, uh, I don't know about this one lads.

>>1857 VtM:B was already a pretty political game in its time.
Ivan Petrov · 2019-04-01 09:36
John Rain · 2019-04-01 13:03
>>1863 Could you elaborate on that, please? I didn't really pick up on it when I played. I suppose it had some fairly straightforward political ideas regarding the Camarilla vs Anarchs thing, but I didn't notice anything terribly complex or unusual.
Spooky · 2019-04-02 08:44
>>1865 I always got the sense that the Anarchs (which had Damsel, who wears a Che Guevara t-shirt) are meant to be the good guys, or at least the most (conventionally) morale side. They're also one of the only sides that doesn't really fuarrrk you over, iirc. There are political ads that parody the right-wing Christian politics of the time, dialogue where you can joke about Republicans going to hell, and also dialogue where you can joke about Bush being a vampire. The creators of VtM have always been pretty explicitly left-wing, it shouldn't be a surprise (or even considered bad) that their product will reflect their world view. Then again, I think the idea that games are only now "getting political" is very naive.
Tank · 2019-04-02 08:44

Arisu Mizuki · 2019-04-04 12:50
Go play this - it's an absolutely beautiful game with (some) level design problems (IMO), but absolutely worth checking out. The critics soykaf on it for being too hard, then it got patched to be less hard, but then nobody bothered to re-review it. Then it quickly garnered a cult following. Almost all of it was made by one guy, and his dev log is absolutely fascinating, even to a non-programmer like me. The way he combines his artistic sensibilities with programming knowledge was mindblowing to me: https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=25183.0

>>1876 I question whether a 2-year-old game can be a "classic," but thanks for the recommendation.
Roy Batty · 2019-04-04 20:54
>>1878 Oh, the OP just says "cult," not "classic." My mistake
Boris Grishenko · 2019-04-23 16:00
>>1409 >Everquest >Cult following Wasn't this one of the most popular MMO's back in it's heyday? But I could see it having a cult following if people are still playing it.
Jean Dupont · 2019-04-28 08:58
My dad liked Psychonauts a lot and he got me to play it, I know it's considered a cult classic. A bit dated now, but has a certain timelessness as well. I recommend it.
William Holtzer · 2019-04-28 17:14
7 kingdoms is now open source and gets patched and played by their fans. A game before starcraft existed to set a standard how RTS are played. More of a real time Civ with mythology themed races. Download on the wiki somewhere. https://7kfans.com/

Armitage · 2019-05-06 03:03
>>1945 are there any good source ports for hexen or is it playable enough by default?
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2019-05-06 05:39
>>1958 For 1, nearly everyone uses GZDoom. Way better than vanilla Hexen, lets you use a modern control scheme and many other goodies. For 2, all I know of is Hammer of Thyrion. Not sure what it has over the vanilla engine besides portability to other OSes (I think it supports using rips of the CD music so you don't have to have the disc).

the sims 3 with wacky mods
Cutter · 2019-05-15 00:31
Ogre battle/ogre tactics you could say FF tactics is the most cult-ish FF, though still well known, not really obscure, same for Disgaea. Usually tatics rpgs don`t have the same following as normal jrpgs. Same with Shin megami tensei which is more cult than Persona which is super mainstream now. Grim Fandango and psychonauts are also a couple of not so big games commercial wise but with a dedicated fanbase. Same for adventure games in general, they have not been big since the 90s. Darkstalkers is another cherished franchise despite being death for years
Pris · 2019-06-06 12:37
>>1997 This. I'm amazed of the amount of user content that's available and still beeing produced. With a bunch of graphic mods the game can still look pretty solid. There are also some adult mods on LL that are actively developed if you're into that kind of stuff. I have a few gigs of mods but recently purged most in favor of a strictly medieval stiled world and content.
