Is it THE best place to purchase games?
No skeletons in their closet or anything?
Switch · 2018-06-20 13:09
Its OK I guess. Are you scared of something in particular or just trying to see opinions of other?
Frank Garza · 2018-06-20 13:24
I've been using it a lot lately and I love it tbqh. It has a lot of the features from steam without the DRM and you have 30 days to return a game if you didn't like it or anything.
also I feel like if I throw enough money at cd projekt red Cyberpunk 2077 will release sooner.
Jokes aside, I haven't ever seen anyone with problems around gog policies or stuff so you should be ok
Dr. X · 2018-06-20 14:34
While this won't bother some, I think It's worth noting that quite a lot of games are not native & come with dosbox. Unfortunately gog refuses to make that clear.
Rick Deckard · 2018-06-20 15:34
>>980
A good indication is when older games are listed as being compatible with Linux, Windows and MacOS. Usually it means that the game is actually a prepackaged dosbox install.
Morpheus · 2018-06-20 19:13
>>980
Well that make sense that they work under dosbox. A lot of those games never got a modern system version and only worked under DOS. The only alternative to dosbox in those cases would be to rewrite those games under windows/linux/macos but that would cost a lot of money to make. Money no one would give them back probably (I'm talking about games like Eye of Beholder which cames in one pack for parts 1-3). Also I never had any problem with games under dosbox.
Marly Krushkhova · 2018-06-21 05:41

No they haven't given me a reason to doubt them, I just think it's good practice to check to be sure.
The Plague · 2018-06-21 22:21
I buy from them before buying from Steam. The only times I bought from other vendors such as Steam are when the game is not available on GOG.

Tank · 2018-06-29 00:37

Their website doesn't load without javascript, and this javascript is not free or available for separate download.
>>979
If it doesn't have DRM, then how does "30 days to return" work?
You should be able to finish the game a few times, copy the whole software package, and be done with it. Is this how gog games appear on torrents, right? Well unless it's a limited content demo version, and I haven't heard of game demo versions since 2005.

No, you can't ask GOG to return your money if you didn't like the game. The 30 days returns only apply if the game doesn't work on your system (but your computer had meet the game system requirements). Also they will try to fix the problem and require you to cooperate with them and only if they fail to resolve your problem then you will get the money back. GOG is pretty awesome as far as I'm concerned. But there are a few things worth mentioning.
1) A lot of times, the GOG version is worse because either it lacks a feature like cloud saves which prevents you from having to mess with finding that game's save folder or maybe their multiplayer required Steam or something. I'm considering rebuying some games for this very reason plus I could always syncthing my saves to another computer with the GOG version if I wanted
2) Same games require the Windows only GOG Galaxy client. I remember this when they gave out a Double Dragon game for free. It didn't bother me since I like GOG Galaxy but I know some people will not like that.
3) GOG Galaxy is again, Windows only right now, so even if you do have a bunch of Linux games I like do and enjoy having a client, you're kinda out of luck.

It lacks spying? Good.

They offer offline downloaders. EXE based too, but I never was forced to use their client.

Yeah they changed something how you can extract the games, which was a complete cunt move toward *NIX friends.
Pris · 2018-07-05 14:07

Cloud saves are pretty useful, actually, but again, nothing is stopping me from using syncthing for the same functions.
>They offer offline downloaders. EXE based too, but I never was forced to use their client.
Again, only certain games force the Galaxy client, unless they changed that Double Dragon game and others like it but some reviews for a select games mention the forcing of the client.

Can you elaborate on this? I've always just direct-downloaded games from their website without issue. I tried looking into this but all I could find were tons of forum posts that didn't really go into detail. It sounds like they had some promotion where they gave a game away for free, but it was only available if you used the client?
>>1139
Maybe I'm a cynic, but this honestly doesn't bother me that much. Makes me wonder though: does GOG place any restrictions on the kinds of games they are willing to host? Bit of a hot issue at the moment, what with steam's new "anything but trolls and grifters" policy.
Frank Garza · 2018-07-19 23:00

quite happy with them... i used them from time to time (mostly just waiting till stuff on my wish list goes on sale) and i prefer them to steam... obviously no drm is a nice bonus. haven't needed to use their 30 day refund (and hopefully never will) but that sounds like really nice policy, too. i am using their gog galaxy client and i wish they changed a few things about it (i mean, sometimes i gotta open their website in my browser...) so hopefully they make it a bit more useful.
oh and their filtering could have more options :/
i mean i use them since they still were good old games and they were my primary source for old games you couldn't buy anywhere else... and i just stuck with them. the fact you can buy diablo there now is just amazing (and i still don't understand what blizzard is doing - i have a cd with diablo, but i can't register it with them because they aren't selling it anymore, but now gog is??)
i am sure gog is doing some shady stuff i am not aware of, but well... since i don't know about it... (though if you do, please let me know)

from http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=3331:
>DRM. [...] to design [equipment] so they are instruments of RIAA/MPAA control rather than the purchaser’s.
it means others don't let you use the game you purchased, or watch the movie, listen the music you've paid for, unless you also install an additional program on your device. This program you are legally forbidden to control, replace or mention security vulnerabilities about. The program also prevents lain from lending lain's book to a friend. DRM officially stands for "digital rights management".
My opinion about DRM is that it turns publishers into oppressors and that lain protects her family by avoiding it. I've written an essay on DRM for lain at

Dead thread, but the funniest part is how companies believe that how treating their consumers like animals is going to win them over compared to their friendly torrent service. Piracy is your COMPETITION,and only ever arises in large numbers because you failed to provide adequate service for everyone.
Spike Spiegel · 2020-01-03 17:18
>>2726
>Piracy is your COMPETITION
Not really. My country is one of the top countries in terms of piracy and the majority of people I know don't care or probably even know about "DRM-free", etc. they just pirate because why pay 1$ when you can pay 0? None of these guys pirate because of ethical or philosophical issues with evil companies or whatever.
An incredibly tiny percentage of people give a soykaf about DRM on either side of the fence, and if they end up pirating they pirate almost nothing compared to the guys I'm talking about.
Crash Override · 2020-01-11 11:03
>>2727
Nevertheless Valve has demonstrated that by offering a convenient service people will pirate less. Many will pirate regardless, but many others will choose to buy if there's a convenient way to do so.
That said GOG is the superior service
The Fin · 2020-01-11 13:01
>>2743
How true is this, really? The people I know who buy games on Steam are people who never pirated, or pirated very little.
I don't know much about modern consoles, but I remember at the time of PSX you needed to have something tweaked in your console so you could buy pirated CDs for cheap. As this hardware stuff became more and more complicated to pull off, everyone decided it wasn't worth it and they just bought the videogames. That's the only example I have of people who formerly pirated who stopped pirating. Meanwhile every PC pirate I know swears by the oath "if I can pirate it, I will pirate it" while pirating 5$ indie games.
Mobile gaming is the biggest right now (it was almost as big as PC and all consoles combined in 2017), because as you can imagine, the people who play mobile games don't even know what an .apk file is and most of the games don't make money from direct sales.
It's not about the Play store being convenient, it's about normal people being retarded and clueless.

I was excited by the potential of gog as a steam alternative when I first heard about it some years ago. But since then Steam has made such a big effort in supporting linux and making more games linux-compatible. Meanwhile gog has done nothing to support linux-users.
It might be alright for windows, but as a linux user I am very happy with steam for now.

Gog started out really ahead in turns of GNU/Linux support but they took it for granted and never improved at all. People have been asking for a Gog GNU client forever but only "it's in the works" appears every now and then. Game support has become very lackluster as well unfortunately.

It's not terrible but I've given up on supporting them (used to use them exclusively as my vidya vendor until recently). They promised for years to really focus on GNU/Linux support but have basically given up on it. They have even taken away mention of Galaxy supporting it at any point in the future. They can honestly go fuarrrk themselves at this point.
Yes, Steam is proprietary and sells proprietary soykaf, but at least they treat me nicely and support my ethical OS unlike GOG who have gotten too full of themselves and think that basically they can ride on CYBABUNK 2OXX

Is there a proven method to verify game that claims to be GOG game to be a legit GOG file, do they cryptographically sign their releases or at least provide hash sums on their webpage?
E.g: how do I get sure the "gog version" I've downloaded from torrents is a legit unaltered gog game without malware?

every vidya-plattform is a botnet, if you want to play online-games with friends you have to die in one way or another
sadly it is not going to happen that vidya-game-devs develop games without the spyware features because it helps them too much, they have much less to care about
