I've seen a few posts about Minecraft behind tor on various places on the internet now. Never tried it though. How's the lag?

i got ~ 200-1000 ms lag depending on tor circuit

on the one hand, this seems cool
on the other hand, minetest is way more lain than minecraft
i am torn.
maybe ill stop by. is it a serious server or is brewing soykaf welcome?

>minetest
never played it lol, looks cool
>is it a serious server?
started a few hours ago, it will depend on who stays. i think /rules/ are good to go for now.
waiting for your feedback, from my side, interacting with static objects like mining etc is playable, but things get trickier when fighting mobs.
also i got a strategy with this mod to press
>change IP
button few times until i get ping below 300 ms, which is visible when mouse is over the signal bar

Unfortunately, minetest uses UDP, so it can't be proxied over Tor. In theory, it should work with i2p, but I couldn't make it work when I tried.

what do you think about idea of simple tcp wrapper?
client side will start listening on udp port allowing connection from game. if anything is received it will establish tcp connection to a server side wrapper and will forward packets in two directions?

why do you even use tor to play minecraft genuinely?

Hidden services are quite cozy for selfhosting simple things, you can run something on a pc in your house and have people connect to it without having to leak your IP to them, or having to worry about your dynamic IP changing. Also it's free
Agent Richard Gill · 2026-03-03 19:22
I guess it's down? Host is unreachable. (I haven't used tor in a long time so idk)
Yamaoto Toshi · 2026-03-05 06:14
take the server back up dumbass
GODCRAFTER · 2026-03-05 13:07
I WAS SO EXCITED TO PLAY SOME MINECRAFT OVER TOR MAKE THE SERVER BE ONLINE AGAIN :(

Yes
>>9096
It was really laggy which made it even more unlikely to have been long-term
Judge Fang · 2026-05-29 02:53
its up again but land claims have expired
basil · 2026-05-30 16:30
i'll be playing this a lot i think, recently started getting into multiplayer again. if anyone wants to help me build up a nice village commune please let me know! i'd love to have someone to play with on here. ~basil

Can you also do Luanti over Tor?
Six · 2026-06-06 23:28
>>9211
Luanti uses UDP but Tor only supports TCP. It might be possible, but it isn't straightforward. If you manage to make it work, please write a tutorial.

Btw, i2p can do UDP, supposedly, but I didn't manage to make it work.
Tyrell Wellick · 2026-06-07 03:57
I2P seems a bit better suited for this purpose, but hey, this is cool as hell. Amazing work, OP.

Just take into account that it's theoretically possible to discover your hidden service in Tor. I don't mean its real IP, but rather that there are ways to enumerate all hidden services in the network, so eventually you may get some bots joining in the game.
Just a warning for others: hidden services are not that hidden. If you want to share services with friends, set up client authorization.

i think its possible to build an tcp wrapper for
from server side, you need to open tcp listener, and for each new connected client assign free src udp port, and forward in two ways to specified local dst port of udp luneti server.
on client side, udp listener as a localhost proxy server, and each packet that comes on udp listener you forward to opened (per udp src port) tcp socket to server
Yuki Nagato · 2026-06-07 11:39
>>9217
You can't easily enumerate because there is almost and infinity of addresses to try.
No one run bots that search for darknet minecraft server, what would be even the point.
And finally if you DON'T want your hidden service to be discoverable, this is where "HiddenServiceAuthorizeClient stealth" config comes in
>>9213
Tcp wrappers are tricky
Donna Hawthorne · 2026-06-07 17:05
Do people really still play mc?
Is it not getting old now

learn about how hidden service connections are established
if you want to connect to a hidden service, you first need to find the middle node where the onion service is advertising its entry point ("middle node")
and where are these hidden service entry points listed? in publicly available HSDirs
https://spec.torproject.org/rend-spec/overview.html
without this mechanism, it would not be possible to establish a 6-node hidden service circuit
hidden service enumeration is trivial

Who said it was impossible?
I just said there is too much addresses to try.

>Who said it was impossible?
Explain why it would be possible.
It makes no sense.
