Fortnite cheater case

XERXES · 2018-05-10 09:47
Cheat in a videogame, get sued. https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/9/17333292/fortnite-cheater-lawsuit The problem here isn't so much that Epic Games wants to do something about cheaters, the problem is that precedent is made for modding a videogame to be illegal. Copyright laws are once again applied way too broadly, not as a way to protect intellectual property, but to strongarm and threaten people to use software in the way that the developers intended it. Regardless of whether or not this kid is a dick for cheating in a multiplayer game, this lawsuit is a farce because it's completely removed from any moral arguments. Interestingly, most of the commenters on the Verge article seem to be on the side of Epic Games.

i fail to see how any of this is going to help epic wouldn't it be wiser to go after the cheat makers instead of the kid? as far as modifying the game goes, the only part where he is in the wrong is not getting consent from other players since the game modifier affects them, as well. the kid is either stupid or ballsy for continuing to upload videos. and as always > i did noting rong this strike is all wrong i was modding in a video game that isnt against youtubes TOS Why was i striked!!!!b

>>904 Copyright in the US only exists to further the good of society, not to protect creators or authors. Since Fortnite is so boring to play, the best thing to come out of it will be hacks and mods. This means that Fortnite should be exempt from any copyright protections.

>>904 This really makes me want to write cheats for Fortnite now. What type of absolute asshole sues a 14 year old for cheating in a video game? >>911 From the article, it seems like they do go after the cheat makers, too. >Charles Vraspir, a cheat-writer who settled with Epic Games late last year, is quoted in the lawsuit as saying that he “was sticking to PVE but [Epic] decided to unleash the beast by banning [him] and making their PVP F2P [free to play].” >>912 Fortnite confirmed for needing to use the WTFPLv2. I agree wholeheartedly with you, OP.
