Steam should accept crypto
Lain Iwakura · 2025-08-15 19:52
As most of you are probably aware, payment processors (Visa, Mastercad ) recently said they will block payment to platforms that sell games with adult content.
Now that people are aware of how payment processors can use their power to censor anyone, maybe crypto adoption can be taken more seriously, crypto coins has it's flaws however for buying digital media they can really be a good option.
Valve added an option for buying games with bitcoin in the past however they dropped the support because of the high fees and volatility but nowadays we have coins that offer higher stability and lower transaction fees than bitcoin.
Do you think Valve can reconsider using crypto coins? What's the best coin to be used in your opinion?
Donna Hawthorne · 2025-08-15 20:53
Crypto will NEVER replace fiat currency. Get over it. What is more realistic is payment systems like Taler but it is missing features like currency conversion. What this does at least in theory is allow payment processors to have deniability protection because they will not know what someone is purchasing.

Yes, I also want this.
> volatility
They can just use USDT or USDC is they're lazy, but the better solution would be to establish a new internal team of traders whose job will be turning crypto into more crypto.

The volatility problem is for customers, not for Valve. How do you sell something when the price changes every other day because of fluctuations in the currency?
I, John Smith, exchanged bitcoins last week to buy a $50 game. At the time, it was 0.00040 BTC. A week later the exchange rate changed, and the game now sells for 0.00043 BTC (still $50). I lost $3 in that simple transaction.

But volatility is why no one would use crypto to buy anything but from the darknet where they dont care about accidentally getting ripped off some.

1. Accept USDT, USDC (they're always 1:1 to USD and fully backed by audited physical assets).
2. Introduce an option to buy through exchange: at the moment of purchase you use your normal currency, it goes automatically converted through exchange in whatever crypto Valve prefers at the moment.
3. For those who uses crypto on the side, for other things, still allow buying through non-stablecoin crypto directly, this category will be the only one who has to deal with volatility, but it's a voluntary choice.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Tether on Tron (USDT-TRON) are good options for merchants to accept as payments. Bitcoin (BTC) has too high transaction fees, makes no sense to pay $2 transaction fee for a $4 game. It's unfortunate that BTC is shilled so much by certain vocal people in the cryptocurrency space including the president of El Salvador as "the only cryptocurrency anyone should ever use" and that all other cryptocurrencies are "soykafcoins", but it makes sense that people who invested early want to shill it so they get a return on investment. Anything involving finances attracts shameless greedy shills.
The merchant has to provide easy-to-follow instructions to impatient low-information customers on how to get either of these cryptocurrencies and how to pay with them properly. For example "Tether on Tron (USDT-TRON)" just by itself is quite a mouthful, you have to explain to the customer there are three types of Tethers/USDTs, and they need to get the Tron blockchain version (<$0.01 transaction fees), not the older Ethereum blockchain version ($1~5 transaction fees) or Bitcoin blockchain version (often greater than $5 transaction fees) of Tether (USDT).

Why ? There already are people getting paid in crypto and using it for daily purchases, especially in 3rd world countries with less stable currency.

Because for one many governments have legal requirements on documentation with businesses financial assets. As I mentioned before only Taler actually follows these laws. I didnt mention it can be used with crypto currency if you wanted but it also takes debit cards and bank transfers depending how it is set up. It is anonymous for the people buying but accounted for on the seller end for needed documentation. Basically it is just turning currency into tokens then back into currency but not the way cryptocurrency does.

1) Why are you buying games and not just download them from piratebay or rutracker?
2) Just use plati.market to buy any game by crypto.
I don't know any western platforms, and maybe it so illegal, like
>decriminalized drugs
>but you cannot download fuarrrking game by torrent
But i recommend to use alternative platforms to buy things for crypto//

I pirate 90% of the games I play, when I buy a game it's most for financially supporting the dev's of a project I REALLY liked.

I buy games because I want to do steam achievements... Yeah, I'm not proud of it. It helps that I'm only ever interested in indie games though.

Have you ever even mined monero? People usually make less than 1.50 on bleeding edge CPUs that are in the thousands without the electricity bills.
Faye Valentine · 2025-09-06 11:36

I've been mining for over 5 years and I can say I've made around roughly 1k euros a month, on average. Obviously you are not mining that much monero on an intel core laptop.
I've recently ordered a new batch of hardware and with rough estimate: double the hashrate for 20 percent less electricity.
Mining farm is in a shack outside so cooling isn't a problem for most of the year.

That's something I've covered on https://lainchan.org/r/res/44024.html where I I have researched a lot of things, Steam and itch.io included.
A few things to check out are

Basically, it's to do with anti-porn campaigns and the bans and takedowns of such content, which all started back in April this year.
Unfortunately, I had never tried cryptocurrency and I don't know how Valve could manage that at all. I know how Paypal's useful though!

You can only go down this road for so long. Just because you find a way around the neopuritan blockade for now doesn't mean that they'll stop trying to tell you how to live your life going forward, because the further they marginalize you the harder they can move against you.
Basically, if everyone does something, it would be political suicide to ban it. So instead they get people to stop doing that thing through non-political means, like by exploiting an unchecked monopoly in payment processing.
If then people do stop doing it, to the point where only a minority remains, you can get politicians to back your anti-thing agenda.
Pay for a product category with crypto because fiat payment processors refuse your business?
They can (probably will) get lawmakers to ban the sale and ownership of that product category entirely.
You'd need to fight for your rights, out in public, attaching your real face and name to the consumption of pornographic content.
Failing that, in a worst case future, you'd have to take payment and identity information out of every step of the development to delivery pipeline.
You couldn't rely on webhosting, not for direct downloads, maybe not even for the magnet links or related discussion.
All we'd have left is torrenting games and other media created for the love of creating, not the expectation of financial gain, like the Fanimatrix.
Morpheus · 2025-11-13 19:13
I looked into this topic for a bit and it seems like there are mainly two distinct groups that are very interesting in banning pornography. The first one is neopuritan christians obviously, and I don't think I have to explain that further. The second one is feminist advocacy groups. I browsed their communities for a bit and talked to their members. My main takeaway is this:
They believe the overwhelming majority of porn consumers are men, and men's consumption of porn normalizes the sexual objectification and abuse of women. They even believe that if men continue consuming porn on a regular basis, they will eventually become pedophiles that prey on children.
That's their angle. I looked into collective shout for a bit and I saw similar themes among their advocacy. But there is a catch. They do not advocate against porn novels whose main audience is women, and more interestingly, even when these novels feature violent sexual themes and even rape against women. Further, this group have defended the movie "Cuties" which was a short run on Netflix. For those of you who don't know, it's was movie that sexualized adolescent girls, and according to collective shout, this was a "a problematic but brave act of expression".
So, in summary, I believe this whole movement is not about neopuritan activism, but rather a feminist movement that seek to constrain men's sexual freedom. As I said before, they have no issues with either sexual depictions of women, fetishization of rape, or sexualization of children. It's only a problem when men is the main consumers of such content.

There's three, actually.
Don't forget about about the powers that be using puritan and feminist talking points as a pretext to expand internet surveillance under the guise of child protection via age verification, which just ends up linking everything everyone ever says to their real identity.
It's a stroke of genius, really. The political right can take the puritan angle, the left the feminist angle, and both can work together toward a common goal.

>The political right can take the puritan angle, the left the feminist angle, and both can work together toward a common goal.
All politics is like this, fabricating a justification for both the left and right to support an unpopular thing.
Both sides can blame the other for their justification and support, while everything goes forth as planned despite the noise.

Purely so that i can send gifts to people in third world countries. fuarrrking exchange rate bs on steam not letting me send games to people.
Agent Smith · 2025-11-30 03:46
It's possible to buy games on Steam with crypto - even with privacy coins like Monero. It's just that you have to use external services that trade crypto for popular gift cards (I believe that Cake Wallet has a built-in store for these, but i'm not sure how much I'd trust them), buy Steam gift cards, charge your account, and then buy your games. It's not a perfect option, but it's absolutely possible to buy games for crypto on Steam.
