Visual Novel Thread

Surprised not to find one here. There used to be a good one before. I've not played many, but these I like >Katawa Shoujo (http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/) A standard high school dating sim, but at a special school where all the girls have disabilities. Free and there's also a linux version. It gets kinda deep and the characters are really interesting. >Doki Doki Literature Club (http://ddlc.moe/) Just your standard, moe, kawaii dating sim. >Steins;Gate (http://steins-gate.us/ and http://store.steampowered.com/app/412830/STEINSGATE/) A surprisingly well done story about time travel. Involves John Titor and the Many-Worlds Interpretation.

I feel like I should have spent more time in the Nasuverse by reading VNs instead of watching the animes. Still, the ufotable adaptations feel good enough to me, so I don't regret it too much. I just went through all of Kara no Kyoukai. Umineko no Naku Koro ni is damn good soykaf. I highly recommend reading 1-8 as a VN and not watching the anime adaptation before you do. I'm not sure for Higurashi, I am biased towards the anime as it was one of my first favorites.

Bernd and the Mystery of Unteralterbach is a high quality GPLv3 visual novel. https://web.archive.org/web/20171014081514/http://unteralterbach.net/index.en.html

Any free as in free beer and free as in freedom (or they can just run natively on gnu/linux) VNs? I've already played dokidoki, KS and Bernd. I've fancied all three of them but KS is by far the most emotional VN I've played thus far. I'd also recommend Sengoku Rance, it's a 18+ visual novel/rpg, it's proprietary and not free though. Be warned, the game is quite addictive.

The first I played through was Doki Doki Literature Club. I then played the Steam version of Sound of Drop: Fall into Poison and got all four endings. Then I played Notch- The Innocent Luna: Eclipsed Sinners and I am still a bit confused by it. I ended up getting one bad ending, a good ending, and another good ending but I had to look online to figure out decision points to get an actual good ending. DDLC definitely opened up a door for me.
J.C. Denton · 2018-07-01 07:27
Anyone else here play Digital: A Love Story?(https://vndb.org/v4111) I just finished it and I thought lainons might be interested in it. The story is about a computer virus that starts killing AIs and the game is played/read through a pretty neat old fashioned gui. The sucky parts of the game are that it can be a little confusing about how your supposed to progress through the plot, and it's pretty short, like under two hours. Also I really wish the *Emilia character was developed a lot more.

Nguoi La · 2018-07-01 21:48
>>823 I played too much of them. Messed up stuff like Black Lilith and worse. Perhaps not typical VN, more like eroge or nukige. At some point there was a scene with a guillotine attached to the important part of a guy and the girl that loved him had to keep the rope of it in her mouth and not moan. Yeah not looking back to that soykaf. Toned it down and played some vanilla stuff on Steam where I still have about 8 unfinished VNs. Just having like a spiritual crisis with the medium itself until I can get over with it and enjoy it again. Has lainon experienced bad feelings too after the wrong visual novels?
Koichiro · 2018-07-01 22:11
>>823 I'm pretty casual but I've been getting into them more recently. Ace Attorney and the Zero Escape games were technically first, but my gateway to checking out the wider genre was Danganronpa. Then I picked up the Fate/stay night, ef, Steins;Gate, a western VN called Highway Blossoms and some VN-adjacent games like Edith Finch. Also read a few unremarkable moe games like SonoHana. Last week I finished Steins;Gate 0 and am debating what to try next. Probably either Cross Channel or Fruit of Grisaia, both look interesting though in different ways.

>>827 Umineko is some good soykaf, indeed. It rekindled my love for mystery novels, while at the same time providing a heart-touching story that I'm still invested in to this day...And I finished EP7 way too many years ago. I still cry when I get to the Riccordando Il Pasatto part in EP8. The Zero Escape saga (except the last game) is pretty fuarrrking good as well. They are more puzzle games, but they also have a lot of text and VN parts. The first two games are gold. They always keep you guessing at the plot, and I'm sure a lot of lainons will like their themes. Danganronpa is great too. It's amazing how they build this world with very solid themes, and then proceed to heavily deconstruct it to play with your expectations and feelings. Also, I'm going to start playing Steins Gate 0. Without spoilerinos, what did all of you think about it?
Cat Mother · 2018-08-31 08:15

Things that fit this website: >Kikokugai: The Cyber Slayer (Original is 18+, but I recommend the remake that is censored) By Urobutcher, killer soundtrack and aesthetic, cyberpunk meets revenge story meets wuxia. Often said to have some of the best fight scenes in the entire medium. >EVE Burst Error (18+ but the translated versions are all ages) Considered a classic among the Japanese. Also one of the first VNs ever translated. The translation is... not good. It has a lot of Bill Clinton jokes, dating it tremendously. Still, it's a classic sleuthing story with that PC-98 aesthetic, great music, and some interesting themes. Might be worth waiting a bit, it got remade recently and so a better quality translation may be coming. >The Infinity series Never7, Ever17, and Remember11 are all translated. They share a writer with the Zero Escape series. Never7 is a straightforward dating sim with some sci-fi elements to it, but the Cure route... well, I can't say much else without spoiling it. Ever17 has a slow beginning despite having a unique setting, then goes off the rails. Finally, Remember11 is 100% plot. Remember11 is also infamous for its absurdly complex plot; you'll probably need to read the fan explanation if you want to understand the insane amount of layers it has. You can skip Never7, it's 95% generic dating sim and 5% interesting. Things that don't as much: >Kara no Shoujo (18+) A dark, disturbing noir story set in post-WWII Tokyo. Kara no Shoujo has no problem with graphic depictions of sex and violence, but it's extremely stylish and you'll be hard pressed to find a VN with better art direction. It also has a great sequel and a prequel called Cartagra which you should play first if you want to try it, as some of its characters and plot comes up in KnS in a minor but spoiling way. >Subahibi (18+) A real rabbithole of a story. Saying more would spoil it, but it is quickly developing a classic status. It could probably go in the upper section though >Fata Morgana Beautiful, unique art direction with a good story to match. Gothic style with a romantic heart.
HELIOS · 2018-10-04 14:26
Not sure if it counts since there's very little story choice involved and there's a fair bit of gameplay outside of just reading, but Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is incredibly underrated; one of my favourite VNs
Yuki Nagato · 2018-10-10 15:16
I recently played through a free one on Steam called Trick and Treat. It requires getting all regular endings before getting the real ending. It wasn't too scary but had a creepy feeling to it and it had a good plot twist with the solution being fairly well done. The soundtrack was cool as well.

The same company that released Higurashi (depending on which game its so much better than the anime) and Umineko also had another game called Ookamikakushi. The designs were flawless and the plot was, predictably, in the same vein as the other 2. Pic related: its ookamikakushi

Yume Miru Kusuri. If you like Katawa Shoujo, you will like this visual novel. The premise is similar but less gross: you can get involved in the life of 3 different weird girls, each with a different problem: bullying, asocial, or drug addict. There's romancing, nudity and sex, but it's tastefully done. What sets it apart is the high quality writing and "magical realism" atmosphere. It treats the painful, shameful topics delicately and manages to offer beauty and redemption from them. It's bittersweet and beautiful.

428: Shibuya Scramble is a fun and underrated game. The whole cast is a lot of fun and the execution of the story is very interesting. You jump back and forth between different characters who keep getting in the way of each other and have to find out a path that lets everyone get what they need to move on. It's VERY Japanese though, it feels a lot like a Japanese live action TV show in pretty much every way, so the absurd comedy works amazingly while some of the heavy drama falls on its face.

Hi lainons, I've started playing Katawa Shoujo (9 years late, I know) and since this is the VN thread I'd like to share my musings about it if that's alright. Emi (1/?): Just finished Katawa Shoujo for the first time on Emi's good ending. And the feels. On one hand I'm glad Emi was happy in the end, being able to open up to Hisao, no longer fearing losing him, just happy for him to be with her. On the other hand I'm sorry that she had to go through so much hurt, that Hisao couldn't help her earlier. At least its inspired me to try and help people IRL, I don't want people to hurt by themselves. I'm playing Hanako's route now, I'll come back once I'm done with that.
Terzibashjian · 2021-10-03 11:57
>>4214 the biggest problem with subahibi is that after you read it you've already read the best visual novel so now all other visual novels are never going to live up to the high you experienced reading subahibi so you'll spend 2 years of your life reading pornographic power-point games in search for that experience and you will read the tractatus logico philosophicum and then realise wittgenstein basically obesolted it with philosophical observations and tractatus is basically just there to troll logical positivists and subahibi is the only good thing to ever come out of it and your life will slowly spiral as you pray every night that sakura no uta gets an english translation slowly going insane

I never really got into VNs. Forever ago I played Katawa Shoujo (Emi and Lilly), and earlier this year I replayed Emi's route. I liked it, but my problem with VNs is that there's too much reading for it to be like manga or anime and too much imagery to be plain reading. I can relax while watching anime or reading books on an e-reader, but VNs are much less comfy for me to read. I would prefer reading a light novel style "major illustrations in-between pages of words" over making the same few static models change facial expression in between the one-to-two lines that pressing the spacebar causes to appear, though you would probably need a lot more images than a regular LN. Maybe I'm just autistic.

>>5317 Thanks lainon, I'm interested what this series of events is, if you don't mind me asking. Katawa Shoujo has changed my way of thinking and acting a lot even I haven't 100%'ed it yet. >>5307 Hanako (2/?): The first thing that strikes me about Hanako is her as a character. Despite not having played all the routes I wonder I feel as though Hanako might end up being my favorite character, I have a few ideas though. Firstly, the lessons her story teaches are profound and leave an impact, having changed the way I think and act, even more so than Emi. Secondly, I think Hanako is quite similar to some girls with whom I have interacted with in the past, and perhaps more importantly, to girls that I believe had an interest in me, even if not romantically, but as taking me as a close friend. Regrettably, I never tried to get close to these girls (romantically, platonically or otherwise), but Hanako poses a “what if?”, showing that in the future I should put more effort into pulling back a curtain of shyness, as it my pay of handsomely. Finally, I believe I can empathise with her situation. I am by no means petrified when speaking to people, nor to I flee from strangers. Despite this, I don’t believe I would have played a visual novel from 2012, conceived on the “/a/ - Anime “ board of 4chan, a website stereotypically for outcast, nerds and miscreants, if I were a socially normal person. I can empathise with the feeling of being an outsider and having very few close friends. The two main lessons in her story are not to judge, and to treat people like people. These may seem very obvious but you might not put these ideas into practice if you don't experience them yourself (or vicariously through Hisao. I was shocked when I found a quiet girl like Hanako liked singing, don't judge a book by its cover. An idea carries over from Emi's route too, be there for someone unconditionally, but give them their space, and don't baby them. Apart from the lessons about treating other people there are messages about how to treat yourself. Mutou pulls Hisao aside at one point and talks to him about his future, how Yamuku gives him so much, and how importantly he must make time for himself with sacrificing his relationships. "Shanghai Studiousness" is the best example of this. Hisao makes time for his own business while still hanging out with Hanako. Sorry if this was long or rambling, I felt I needed to get my thoughts into words and have someone else see them. I'm writing a PDF essay on this topic which will hopefully be more refined, which I will release with my last post on this game.

I haven't played many for a while. I really liked the mechanics in Long Live the Queen where everyone wanted to assasinate you, and Suzzeraine was okay. I also played a lot of classic older ones like MuvLuv Alternative, Fate/Starry Night, and all the melodrama by KEY, but I can't recommend most of those games because they took too long and needed an editor to ruthlessly cut them down to size. I even stopped playing eroge for porn because it was too frustrating to solve narrative puzzles and skip text for extended periods of time when I could just look up CGs or animations/videos online. Seldom have I felt like visual novels respected my time so I gradually lost interest in playing them.

I'm playing Fate stay night, I finished Fate and UBW, I'm only missing Heaven feel's. It's a simple fighting shonen but simply with overexposure, Shirou is the most retarded protagonist I've seen on any weeb media, the message is stupid, especially in UBW. Should I follow a stupid ideal, which is not mine, impossible to achieve despite the fact that I have before my eyes (Archer) the proof that this ideal is impossible and will only lead me to my own misery and suffering and anyway I will be forced to sacrifice people? Shirou gives a fuarrrking idealistic and ridiculous answer like: "living with that ideal is beautiful" About the fate route, it's ridiculous to fuarrrk and have a romance with the caricaturization of King Arthur, from his route the only positive thing I can get is the message that the past can't be changed and you have to accept it, however, did anyone feel like hitting Shirou's head with a stone when in the fate route in the end of the date with saber, shirou tells her that she must live to her self and must abandon her desire? I mean how childish and hypocritical Shirou literally is the guy - even the characters themselves remind you of this - who puts the lives of others before his own. The only thing I liked about this vn for now; was the music, the backgrounds, the designs, some fights that I find entertaining to read, the hentai scenes, although forced, seemed good to me as hentai scenes, the great universe that it presents is very expandable, some characters like Caster, Tiger, Gilgamesh, etc (it's not that they are good characters, they just don't break many plates). I'm going to read Heaven feel, I've read that it's the best route and that Shirou isn't an idealistic retard like in the others, I hope it's not a disaster
Eldon Tyrell · 2025-01-24 20:21

just finished steins;gate all 6 endings. I see why people like it so much now... The true ending, ironically, had an almost "too good to be true" vibe and lowered my suspension of disbelief just a teeny bit. I did like it though and I'd be lying if it didn't make me feel "that feeling" (you know the one) The part that REALLY got me, though, was the first time I got Kurisu's ending. The part when she bursts through the door near the end with that sad smile on her face, "We didn't say goodbye!"... Then Okabe IMMEDIATELY smashes the enter key because he knows if he listens he won't be able to go through with it. Kurisu can't even manage to stammer out an "I love you" before it activates... >>8646 Finished KnS. I liked it a lot, minus the h scenes. My favorite characters were probably Tojiko RIP and Toko. Uozumi was great too, he had a real good vibe with the MC. The plot got a little hard to follow but I'm not smart Started Higurashi and Ever17 (not the steam version, the himmel-patched old version). Too early on in both to really have any opinions yet.
Lain Iwakura · 2025-08-14 18:18
I'm not sure what the proper price expectations for a VN are, but I am reasonably sure that Saeko: Giantess Dating Sim is overpriced. ~4-5 hours runtime if you are exhausting all possible lines of dialog, at $10-15 (depending on dlsite version vs steam version, ASMR-inclusion, OST etc). I'm not 100% sure what market or demographic of games it should be compared with at price points though. There's a fetish premium added to games but I'm not sure if the content of this game is more fetish-critical than fetish-satisfactory. That premium should probably be waived. It is nice to see some work being done in a nonstandard engine.

Does anyone remember a cyb noire visual novel made by a lainon? It was in beta the last time I saw it. The only thing I remember about it is that some people hacked a body-machine interface. The anon also posted the engine written for the game, a single JavaScript file I might also want in the future. It was on itch.io and you could play in the browser.

There's this obscure one I found earlier this month called Abyss Veil. I'm not too big on VNs but I've got it on sale, It's like the dev wanted to make a FPS and a Visual Novel to just strap both together. The music was nice and the dialogues were entertaining enough to get me reading. I'll look at the suggestions here, I guess I could give some VNs a shot

Check out Phenomeno for an occult spooky mystical story. It has really neat night atmosphere with amazing soundtrack that fits right in. It is pretty short though—around 3 hours—so better read it in the evening with lights out. There's only one chapter which is really sad because I wish there were more of them. VN itself is a promotion material to the original light novel, so if you get grabbed into the story go read the book despite how scary it sounds to touch letters without pictures. https://vndb.org/v10526

Came to this thread to see if someone mentioned ZATO, seems multiple people have lol. It's awesome, in fact it impressed me enough that I've been working on a translation of it to my language. It seems to have already gained a decent amount of traction, I wonder if it could become a big hit. I've seen some online suppose that the author was definitely inspired by Lain, I mean ZATO seems pretty unique but some similarities do poke the eye.
The Fin · 2026-02-25 08:01
Z.A.T.O. was great, the kind of aesthetic i want to see more. i actually bought the extra art pack to support the creator and apparently the game was inspired by a story by Vladimir Sorokin, "Падёж" or "Murrain"

why are these always a 5/10 experience? i'm inclined to picture whoever says a visual novel is life-changing as a teenager at the most i think i felt especially disillusioned at umineko's answer arcs where after the vn wasted enough time in the earlier arcs and ryukishi's friend/ghost writer/secret lover croaked he decides to fall on his face and give such soykaf answers to the whole thing (both the who and how). i seriously think most visual novel readers have stockholm syndrome seeing how all the acclaimed vns are so long >>9043 didn't they go bankrupt? i think adventure games are different from vns 'non...
