thinking about modding an elder scrolls game again... skyrim vr maybe - spend a few days picking mods, get to level 6, get bored and never open it again for the next 7 years

In like my 4th playthrough of Elden Ring, but the first one since I moved with my girlfriend, so I've been chipping away at the game trying to get to the DLC. Man I miss having time for video games. Being an adult is like kicking dead whales down the beach.

Factorio space age released on monday, so I've been playing it since then.

Currently trying to get SiN Episodes: Emergence working on my machine, it's a great little sci fi shooter with mid 2000s booba physics and a cool ass aesthetic to boot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFEXNKplqVU

Cyberpunk 2077. I have beaten the game once getting the "good" ending. But i was focused on simply beating the game. In my second playthrough i will try to finish all quests and get a complete picture of night city.

donkey kong country returns for nintendo wii. it's fun if you like 2D platformers, and liberties were taken with the ape physics, giving it a high skill ceiling. an issue i have is the difficulty will very suddenly ramp up to 100 for a single level. for example, its been a week and i'm still stuck on 8-2 Hot Rocket, and it took me 30 attempts to on 6-1, followed by the rest of world 6 taking at most 15. speaking of, i love World 6: Cliff (pictured). the overcast skies, and dusty, rocky terrain, and the black tar contribute to a dull color palette, and it's punctuated with an almost uncharacteristically dreary track list. i know it's up this board's alley, so here's my personal favorite.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Aa2p1jTtYg

>>8065 I like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Use ET: Legacy sourceport. It works well with modern hardware and it has a working server browser (it has been broken for years on vanilla ET). Note that you want to install the 32-bit version because mods need it. >https://www.etlegacy.com/download >https://github.com/etlegacy/etlegacy/wiki/Useful-Links I also like roguelikes, roguelites, RPG games, Touhou and shoot 'em ups. Currently thinking about playing Angband, Nethack or Dwarf Fortress (get Linux Dwarf Pack appimage or PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack). For NetHack, you might be interested in trying Vulture variant because it has isomorphic graphics: https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Vulture Otherwise, you should add some settings to your .nethackrc: # https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Options OPTIONS=number_pad:1 Other games worth playing: Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, original Doom 1 & Doom 2 (DSDA-Doom or GZDoom or Zandronum. Be sure to check out Cacowards!)... More: Fire Emblem (I like the GBA games), Mega Man, Demon roguelike (monster collection roguelike), TOME, Cataclysm: DDA, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Shattered Pixel Dungeon (on mobile), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers Of Sky, Noita, Rogue Legacy, Shovel Knight, Elona+... >>8065 im playing black ops 6 on gamepass to relive teenage wasted time and i got the notion from miladychan putting up a contest for it for like 2.5 thousand dollars but knowing its crypto it'll probably be some indian grinding out the hours. anyway the game honestly doesn't feel that different, there's all sorts of bullshit movement options now and the 'culture' has been replaced with 90 IQ mystery meat consumers, but when you just put everyone on mute and start shooting nothing really matters
Sipho Nkosi · 2024-10-29 14:37
>>8083 >Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Ah, good times. Used to play that every time I got out of school, along with Cod2 and WoW. Couple of years back tried to get into it for the fun of it, but I think the bots and the no-life players who cut you down from miles away got too much. It was a shame I couldn't find the fun kinds of mods, like Star Wars, RTCW-weaponry (can't recall the name) and jaymod. Also noticed that trickjump maps seem to have gone out of fashion, but I guess that's understandable, since we've had almost two decade's worth of time for people to solve 'em all. >>8084 Yes, the writing for Masquerade is absolutely superb, although the gameplay is just horrendous by today's standards. Wouldn't have understood to play it if it weren't for ssethtzeentach doing a video on it. I regret nothing. >>8065 The best games I've played within the past 5 years has to be Dark Souls, Psychonauts 2, Pathologic 2, and Talos Principle 1 and 2. Lot's of room to ponder and wonder and try to use your head. Especially in TP 2, which what the most recent game I played out of all, I liked Lifthrasil's and Straton's audio logs, who came close to Nietzsche and Plato respectively. The ending cinematics started to get ridiculously long after doing all the puzzles, and I really would've liked to see more from the somnodrome. Moreover, I was somewhat left with the impression that the puzzles in TP2 were a lot easier than in TP1, although there was this one puzzle I had to spend like half an hour or more to solve (can't recall which one), and the gravity puzzles were nauseating to do, because of the fast perspective flips. Other than that, a solid game.

Been playing a lot of Quake recently. Mostly Arcane Dimensions. Very good stuff, everything from core mechanics to visuals is significantly improved, without going out of style. Many new weapons and monsters too, and the best thing is maps, those are heavenly good. I did finish it yesterday, and today gave a try to some standalone maps from Siteseer. Found this gem on 2-3 screenshots in the latest Lainzine. Quite small, but very well made and with a nice final fight.

>>8065 Currently I am going through the DLC for I Am Sakuya which is a Touhou FPS fangame. Basically it is ZDoom or GZDoom but with Touhou characters and weapons as well as bouncing knives you can throw. The DLC has you playing as Reimu. It is actually quite fun. Also, I am slowly going through the original Splinter Cell on GOG.

Well, I find myself mulling about a bunch of different games of old and new depending on the mood of the moment. It seems my focus retention and increasing age make it harder to sink everything into a single game like I would have in my more youthful years. Kowloon's Gate for the PS1, the soundtrack and atmosphere have captivatex me greatly, it is in Japanese so playing it presently involves using a translation camera app, although a more complete English fan translation ROMhack is being developed. There are also tools for emulator translation. I also like playing Project Diablo 2. I play WoW on a private server for over a decade, mainly Warmane as my sporadic playing schedule sometimes involving years long breaks are most suited to such a stable server. I can always get back into comfymode. I have been looking into how I could backup all my characters and host my own offline server using AI to simulate other player characters to make the world still feel alive and playable even though offline. There is some repacks to accomplish this but not at the scale I'm thinking of. I also like random stuff and wish I had more friends that liked the same older soykaf as me. Ultima Online Renassaince, Quakeworld, melee combat games like Chiv and Mordhau, CSS CS2, Factorio was fun, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Also so late to the party but been having fun getting into Dota 2, DotA 1, WC3, SC Brood War. It's sad that I likely won't know the feeling again of having my homie over for a sleepover LAN party playing the Last Blade 2 and SSBM until sunrise. I like the worlds of games, tinkering, or the concept of what they could be in the right context probably more than I actually enjoy sitting there playing them alone.

>>8080 Despite my best efforts not to like it. Wound up really enjoying this game. Got about 120 hours into it playing a netrunner build. Actually loved it lol. Besides that I've been playing backpack battles - which is a fun puzzle / auto battler indie game.

I am currently trying to go through Metroid: Rogue Dawn which is a romhack for NES Metroid. I was playing NES Metroid quite a bit and decided to take a break and try Rogue Dawn. It seems very well made. Also, I have been playing the original Splinter Cell off and on.

I think I started too much games in this year without finishing them properly. This is not like me, really, I usually finish the game right before moving on. Kind of want to write it all out just to make it sorted for myself... Albion - I actually started it in the autumn of 2023. It's an old RPG from 1995, but damn it is big. It is also quite interesting. I just do not have enough time to play it, unfortunately, as perils of real life do not quite let me to sit down and play properly, and I really want to get into the vibe for this one. Because, you know, it's just that good. It is amazing how much stuff they could put in less than in a GB back in the day. State Of Emergency - small arcade from Rockstar. It's actually pretty short and I've all but finished it, but I need to write a python script in order to unpack some files and really call it a day on this one. Otherwise it was rather fun for what it was. Gladius - strategy by LucasArts. It is big and slow. I like the setting, and the game has a modding community that is still active to this day, so I guess it says something, but it is just... that slow. Strategies are slow as a rule, but this one is a darn drag. Not sure when I'll get back to it. Just Cause 1 - well, I think I started it 18 years ago for the first time and it still lies around my desktop. This year, maybe. Need For Speed: Carbon - I'm actully trying to make a huge texture pack for it. I mean, I want a proper texture for every muscle car in my garage. I made three so far and about six of them left. This will take a while. Jet Grind Radio - I wanted to use it as an escape from Carbon, but... turns out this game has a whole system that allows the player to upload their own graffiti, and so I want to make a graffiti pack for this game too. Oh, the irony. Anyway, I made one graffiti and need to finish two more. Wipeout 3 Special Edition - I actually started it way, way long ago, but now that I connected NeGcon to my PC, I got back to it and I actually almost finished it by now. Only few races left and I'm done with it. Huntdown - awesome shoot'em up which I'm almost done with. I just need to wrap it all up by shooting a video that demonstrates a small mod I made and then upload all the stuff online. Soon™. Ion Fury - actually, I completed this one several years ago, but they made an update with Aftershock DLC for it, so I downloaded it again, and want to launch it with an eDuke for whatever reason, rather than with a default exe, and I had to download a new version of eDuke for the updated version of the game, yadda-yadda... Anyway, I completed it again. And the I completed the Arrange mode. And I'm now finally doing the Aftershock DLC that I came for in the first place. And you know what? This game is tons of fun. One of the best shooters I've seen in the last years, if not one of the best games overall... though Huntdown which I mentioned just above is kind of amazing too, and you can play that with a friend to top it off... Really, Ion Fury and Huntdown for all you retro lovers out there. Just the things to try if you haven't tried them yet. So, yeah, I'm in the Aftershock DLC and will be done with this one soon enough. Forza Motorsport - the very first one, from the original XBox. I actually started this, what, four or five years ago? But I only have several races left for now, and I hope I will be done with them soon... It might take a while though. FM is a really-really background game for me. I kind of hope it will work with NeGcon, actually, and that's why I decided to include it to this list: to remind myself that I should try to connect NeGcon to my 360.

Playing through a bunch of Doom Wads, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and Morrowind with my first time playing Tamriel Rebuilt. All are loads of fun Lain, I've played Doom 1,2,TNT,Master Levels, etc but wads are just awesome and people still make them all the time. I want to make my own but sadly on OpenBSD there aren't a lot of options for making maps.

Currently I am going through Minoria, the spiritual successor to Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. Pretty good so far. Also, I am going through FF8 Remaster with cheats cause I hate grinding and I hate the junction system. I just want to get through it to move past it although I do like dialogue and soundtrack. I had played a bit of Blue Fire a week ago but I gave up on it cause of how bullshit the parkour platform challenge levels were. Fortunately I got the install setup from a free place.

The Sims for men. I sat on the ground, my back against a wall, as it is the only way to be safe. My entire body was about to give up and I had to catch my breath. I calmly took a bag of tortillas from my backpack as I obseved a zombie slowly walking in my direction. Of course he did, I just fired my last rounds, every Z in the city was coming for me. I had my time. Once I was done eating, I got back on my legs and bashed his skul with a showel. Project zomboid may seem like an easy game because the Z simply walk (unless you turn it on) but it's deceptive. You will die. A lot. One bite mean you are a gonner. It will take days to go trough the symptoms but it will claim your life eventually. Unless you turn it off. And it's not a game about zombies. It's a game about decay, the end of the world, the vermin taking over the city, then the plants taking control of the houses, and eventually the road. If the Z don't get you, scarity and the winter will. That's what the crafting system is for, and it take hours to learn the ropes. You can rebuild society. On the mean time, you have the choice. Keep society going, go post apocalyptic or go primitive. Live innawood, innacity, onnaroof, onnaboat, innahouse, innabunker even. Build your house, choose one, live in your car or camp. Yes, this is the best innawood game. You can turn the Z off and go camping, living off the land.

I've been playing Lost Odyssey, an Xbox 360 exclusive, and it's easily been one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. The story is incredibly emotional and rich — this feels like Microsoft's own Final Fantasy of the Xbox 360 era. As you progress, you uncover more about the main character and his past throughout the centuries (he's immortal), as well as the deep backstories of the other characters. One of the most powerful elements in the game are the "dreams" — short stories that reveal more about the characters’ lives. These were written by a Japanese novelist and they're the high point of the game. If you're curious, there's a YouTube channel where you can check them out: https://youtube.com/@atyod?si=EocF_hyuctF7Magc I love this game and I wish that Microsoft hadn't cancelled the sequence.

Right now I am mostly playing the bullet hell shooter shoot'em up Suguri. I am very close to acutally beating this, but it is an incredibly hard game as you can see by my hour count, but I will not let that discourage me, I am very close, one day victory will be in my grasp. I am right now quite focused on Japanese studies so I've been quite slow on it. Really good fun game with a lot of unique mechanics. There is a great emphasis on being aggressive rather than being passive, if you are pasive and don't prioritize aggression you will die.

I couldn't complete Rainbow Six Vegas since it seems like it was meant for co-op and one of the parts towards the end got ridiculous. I have recently picked up playing Starcaft 1 with some friends of mine. It's very hard, especially considering one of them is an oldhead who's very good and the other plays a very turtly style which wrecks me 99% of the time. I'm very slow and don't know what I'm doing most of the time. I've taken to playing the Terran. They require lots of micro management to do well, which is difficult and hard on my hands, but I'm slowly starting to learn the ropes, and figure it out. I won my first game against an actual player today, the turtle guy. It felt very satisfying, and like I won with actual strategy. My approach was to rush spacecraft and start to build a siege army on his base. I started to encroach with my siege tanks and he surprised me with an attack from behind, which led to my main base being destroyed and me having to scramble to save my remaining bases. It took me a while and I had to rebuild quite slowly but by then he had failed to acquire many more resources and ran dry-- only because he didn't know how to transport units with his race, the Protoss. Overall, I feel a little bad that he only lost the way he did because he didn't know the game as well as I do, but at the same time, I accomplished a very successful legitimate siege, the way they work in real life. I cut him off from his offensive routes, locked him in with chokepoints and made him run dry of resources, which is what killed him in the long run. I think that might be the kind of play that Terrans specialize in? I think one of their best units is the Siege Tank which is crucial in all of their strategies. That and developing air superiority as quickly as possible, because their Battle Cruisers with the Yamato Cannon can melt most high level aerial units, although I feel that is less the case than the Siege approach. Of course, they need a mixture to be successful, which isn't so much the case with the Protoss and the Zerg.

I just achieved all 100 endings for The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy with the final unlocked ending being Ending 55 which is the definitive ending. Controls was awkward at first, but surprisingly intuitive after learning them. Won at least a match against zerg as terran. I really enjoyed spamming vultures in the early game with their mines and ion thrusters. Not as strong against zergs, because of overlords, but against protoss it can really help fend off potential attacks for a while until they get their Observers. After that, i would focus on marines with stims and medics, along with some siege tanks and harass. Just have to be careful to not blow up my own marines :D

Started Diablo 1 last week, picked Sorcerer. It was a tough but a fun ride until the very end when I discovered… that I bricked my character! Apparently you can’t be a mage and focus on magic exclusively since there are monsters in the very late-game (Blood Knights) who are fully resistant to anything you cast, and my points in non-magic talents were so low I could only equip starter weapons! Rerolling a rogue (actually an amazon idk why they called her rogue), lets see how it goes. The game is great fun, atmosphere is extraordinary and music is god-tier (or should I say, diablo-tier). Went for a second playthrough as a rogue (amazon). It's been a blast, almost too easy for the first 5-6 dungeon floors. But from there difficulty picked up, and stayed on consistently challenging level till the very end. Killed Diablo himself by stashing full belt of greater mana potions and simply shooting him in point blank range while drinking potions to maintain my mana shield (book luckily bought from Adria in the very last moments).

>What game are you playing? Final Fantasy 2, on the Gameboy Advance port. It's the one 2d FF game I've never really played through to completion. Haven't yet beaten it - at time of writing my save file is right outside the last dungeon. I like how open-ended the game is and how, if you know where to look, you can score some pretty good loot from the outset. I like the large variety of weapons and magic, although I dislike how everything but swords are kinda eh for attacking with. I like the big magic list - this is the game that adds alot of the series' staples, like Toad, Ultima, and osmose, and I like the thematic differences in how you get magic: Most of the white spells you can buy, but the black spells you have to win off enemies (The mage family of enemies are a very good source of spell tomes, including being able to get Flare like four dungeons before you're intended to). I like the (admittedly light, but what do you expect from a NES game) plot and how it really does feel like you're fighting a war, infiltrating enemy strongholds, liberating prisoners, destroying superweapons, retaking the game's equivalent of Cornera, etc. It's a total ripoff of Star Wars, especially in the first half, but it works. I like that the world changes as you advance the plot - epitomized by What's basically the Death Star II outright destroying four main towns. The game also has the Morrowind quality where it's just fun to master the game's mechanics to the point where you can become very overpowered. The Emperor is also just genuinely fuarrrking cool. He raised an army of monsters to conquer the world alongside the more 'conventional' soldiers and wizards of his army. When you storm the second Death Star, he fights your party himself, and Comes back from actual, no hyperbole Hell to serve as the final boss. He makes Gestahl look like a pussy. It is a NES game again, so, light on plot and probably my imagination doing the heavy lifting, but I feel like that's a good thing. 2's story overall I feel helped lay the groundwork for the 1st half of 6, in a good way, with the fighting a war against a world-conquering empire. The keyword and dialogue system is also really cool and unique, and helps dialog feel more like an actual conversation rather than being told "Welcome to Corneria!" by random townies. Minwu is also a really good introduction to the rotating guest party member system by essentially being your set of training wheels, with his big arsenal of white magic to help you through the first dungeon. Him departing also shows how the war's getting serious. What I don't like is the mechanics, which, while fun to exploit, aren't very well explained and you can only really get the most out of them if you're already familiar with how they work. Dodge tanking, for instance, is almost completely preferable to face tanking, since even with heavy armor you can still be very quickly killed. It also does mean you can grind sixteen weapon levels from the moment you get control of your party and steamroll everything. The GBA port nerfed this, but did so by making grinding weapon levels really weirdly difficult, since you need to fight a 'powerful enough enemy' to advance the skill, but, from how it's calculated, you can literally be fighting the enemies in the final dungeon and still not get any skill points. Leveling magic doesn't have this, so you can just grind sixteen fire levels and nuke everything, regardless. Getting more MP is also a bitch and the best way I found to do it is to just cast Sap and Swap on your own party. The weird elder scrolls leveling system was ambitious and very novel for RPGs, diverging from the more traditional D&D soykaf of FF1, but it's also probably why the game has been critically panned, since it's odd to get your head around. The game's world is also tiny and you can traverse the entirety of it (beyond like 2 islands and the semifinal dungeon) on foot. The game also doesn't stop you from going into an area with enemies that are too powerful for your party to handle, or, contrarily, from going to the wizard town and buying overpowered magic from the word go. The magic balance is all over the place because of the spell level system, where the cost for any particular spell is equal to its level, which means Sleep 16, which just puts enemies to sleep, and Toad 16, which is an instant kill spell, have the same resource cost: 16 mp. Alot of the spells are also redundant (Silence and Amnesia both suppress spellcasting, for example) and there's like a dozen variants of spells that just one-shot an enemy (admittedly with a range of elements to get around some immunities) Teleport, thankfully, does give white magic users some bite before you get Holy, and it's available pretty early on, and lets you get out of dungeons without backtracking. Aside from Minwu the rotating guest party members are kiiiinda crappy. Ricard is about as good as they get since he has alot of sword levels and good equipment when you get him. And we have to talk about the elephant in the room: the boss fights, or the total lack thereof. Every single boss besides The Emperor and The Hell Emperor is a regular enemy from 1-2 dungeons later in the game. None of them have a unique name or sprite, and none of them are very dangerous. Alot of them can be one-shotted by Teleport. Boss fights are usually supposed to be the high points of a FF game and the deficiency here is probably the game's biggest failing. Overall the game's design is very novel and envelope-pushing but brought down by being imbalanced and some questionable design choices. I'd rate 2 as: below 1, on par with 4, and above 3. 3 used to be one of my favourites but it's aggressive linearity, annoying design choices, and really soykaf final boss have kind of soured me on it. I'm gonna need to replay it on the NES later and see if it's tougher, since I feel like the game's been a tad easy and it might be the same kid gloves the GBA port of FF1 was wearing.

I wonder what kind of nonsense you even have in your mind, do you think Steam can decide instead of developers to give demos of their games on a whim? How would that even work, where would they get demos for WIP games on developers behalf? And even for complete games do you think Steam can touch game binaries and like cut 80% of files to turn it into demo automagically? That's not how any kind of development works and Steam can't touch soykaf and make any decisions other than allow or disallow a game on their platform.

>>9249 No. Steam games are "packaged" with their own DRM and leased to you.
The Fin · 2026-06-17 07:34
>>9248 > Steam collects and shares huge amounts of sensitive user information Most of this information belongs to two big groups: your banking information saved to buy games your hardware information to share with Steam and make stuff like Proton work better It is fully understandable if you want to avoid this, but trusting them is still a fine option as well because they still have the reputation of "good guys" and they also are the main reason of current state of Linux gaming (because of Proton). > Steam has been and may still be recording your internet history That one is complete BS and in my case it's not even possible because it's installed via flatpak. > Steam is self-updating software Only updates when I do "flatpak update" and confirm. > Or maybe just torrent or use GOG instead of using the equivalent of a SaaS platform so you actually own the game. Some of those games may have their demos on itch, most only have them on Steam. They're definitely not on torrents. Game developers don't go to torrent trackers to share demos of their WIP games there. >>9249 >>9250 That DRM is optional and many (most?) games just ignore it exists and don't bother using it. Expect the biggest greedy megacorporate AAA titles to have it enabled and everything else not. Stuff like Bethesda, GTA, Cyberpunk - that is where you will most likely find it used.
Unknown · 2026-06-17 07:58
>>9251 >Most of this information belongs to two big groups: >Your banking information saved to buy games Which is already a potential risk if someone hacks their servers. But whatever, everyone does this so it's good am I right? >Your hardware information to share with Steam and make stuff like Proton work better Sure, just like microsoft collects data constantly, using 30% of your CPU idle, and constantly pings back home for "diagnostics". >trusting them is still a fine option as well because they still have the reputation of "good guys" Maybe if you're a tourist from /v/ or reddit. >and they also are the main reason of current state of Linux gaming (because of Proton). They don't do this for charity. It's to gain a market advantage for their own future console. >That DRM is optional No. That DRM is mandatory. I'm not talking about Denuvo but it's similar. It's Steam's own DRM that lets them pull the plug if you are not playing while being logged in on their servers for too long, or if they find anything fishy. Otherwise the whole leasing system wouldn't work and people could buy the game and uninstall the client forever (like GOG). You can literally see the DRM files in a steam game folder and it's what pirates have to crack for websites that rip games from Steam. Even if you trust the billionaire mega corporation with your data, the issue here is that you do not own the game but a license to play it on their own terms. Everyone hated Steam when it was released for this kind of license-system and Valve made it a standard.
Wintermute · 2026-06-17 08:25
>>9252 > They don't do this for charity. It's to gain a market advantage for their own future console. It's still beneficial to support them in this for now. There is no better opportunity to invest in a well maintained Linux gaming ecosystem. I will hardline them only when they fuarrrk up their reputation bad enough. > Which is already a potential risk if someone hacks their servers. But whatever, everyone does this so it's good am I right? I don't think your checkout information is possible to use to steal your money even when servers are hacked. No one stores this kind of information unprotected. Maybe they can leak your email/name/phone or whatever else is there, but all of this information isn't even required if you don't plan to buy anything on Steam, you can probably use it for demos and free games only without adding your credit card info and therefore without adding any of your personal info whatsoever. I think it doesn't even require phone to register, you can just use burner email or email alias. > Sure, just like microsoft collects data constantly, using 30% of your CPU idle, and constantly pings back home for "diagnostics". Steam does randomized hardware surveys and if you are chosen to participate, it will ask you if you agree to share your hardware information. There is meming in Linux gaming communities about "can't wait to share my nixos stats" or whatever, because those hardware surveys are later used in global OS gaming stats and Linux numbers go up recently. I don't know about telemetry in general though, if this is the only kind of telemetry they do or there is more. I find it highly unlikely to be anywhere as insane as Windows sending your keystrokes and screenshots of your screen every few minutes and stuff like that. > No. That DRM is mandatory. I'm not talking about Denuvo but it's similar. It is optional and you can find lists and tools to check if a Steam game is DRM-free or not. https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45614612-DRM-Free-Complete-List/ Anyway I agree with your take that it's better to buy games on platforms that allow you to own the files forever like GOG, but I personally will still support Steam for now. Most games I play are small indies that aren't even on GOG anyway and I never buy AAA stuff, I would only ever play that if I can pirate it.
Crash Override · 2026-06-17 08:38
>>9253 Notice how both your answers to the stored information are just hypotheticals. It's proprietary software and you will never know what they actually do with it. >It is optional and you can find lists and tools to check if a Steam game is DRM-free or not. https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/drm it's MANDATORY. That's not the Steam DRM your link is referring to! Have you ever tried playing a Steam game executable while not logged in? Where do you think the login popup comes from? Have you ever checked your inbound connections while playing a Steam game? Do you think the game developers put the code inside their own game to connect to Valve servers? How is Steam able to block you from playing the game if you move the files elsewhere or if you don't log in? It's the pre-packaged DRM Steam puts into every game you buy. They need to compile the Steam DRM in to sell it on Steam, otherwise the whole buy-it-as-a-license system wouldn't work. Read the link above. I also literally told you you can find the DRM files on any game you buy, and that pirates need to crack that DRM to share it on steam-piracy websites. Are you just silently assuming I'm making soykaf up?
Terzibashjian · 2026-06-17 10:14
>>9254 It's not mandatory and your own screenshot proves it: > Q. My C# / .Net game doesn't run after applying the Steam wrapper > A. The Steam wrapper doesn't support .Net applications. Instead of using the DRM wrapper, use SteamAPI_RestartAppIfNecessary. If you go to the link to read about SteamAPI_RestartAppIfNecessary, it mentions it's also optional. Steam doesn't care about people pirating your game, it gives you some basic tools to slightly protect it if you want, but most of those APIs are meant for achievements, saves, and online player metrics. And you are free to not use them at all. > Q. Do I need to apply DRM to my exe every time I make a new build? What they meant by this is that wrapper tool modifies executable and if you want to use their drm you need to apply it again after you recompile your game because you have different unmodified executable. It doesn't mean that it's necessary to use this tool, just that if you choose to use it, don't forget to use it again after rebuild. > I also literally told you you can find the DRM files I checked few games and only a single one had something like steam_api.dll, but that is irrelevant, because steam wrapper can just transform exe file and not produce any extra files at all. Anyway, I've been running a Steam game outside of it with umu-run a week ago or so, I'll try it together with few other games later to see how many of my 7-8 currently installed games don't have DRM. > They need to compile the Steam DRM in to sell it on Steam, otherwise the whole buy-it-as-a-license system wouldn't work They don't care, you pay 100$ to host your game on Steam, they get some cut from your sales as well but if you want it, you can have your game unprotected or even completely free. Blender is free on Steam for example. "Oh no the model is broken!"

>>9255 Can you play games bought on Steam without loggin in on your Steam account?
Jet Black · 2026-06-17 10:30
>>9256 usually no. depends on the game, 98% the answer is no
Cypher · 2026-06-17 10:37
>>9257 This proves the games have Valve's DRM like I said. Argument's over. Not gonna ask you to do the hard work of checking your inbound connections or read the user agreement to see how they sell you a LICENSE to play the game that they can revoke any time they want. As I said, you don't own the game.
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2026-06-17 10:42
>>9258 I didn't even read the argument you've been having to be honest but I will step in: you're not wrong, and no you do not own the game, as steam never offers you an option to store your game locally. Any person with sufficient experience with computers can get around this, though. Valve's DRM is there just to stop normal people from doing soykaf they aren't technically supposed to do. Still against any kind of anti-DRM argument you can think of, but in the end this is the game developer choice, not Valve. As far as I know, you do not need their DRM to have your game listed there. Big titles examples: BG3 does not have valve's DRM, and you can play it completely offline with our steam closed.
Technician · 2026-06-17 11:26
>Any person with sufficient experience with computers can get around this, though. Valve's DRM is there just to stop normal people from doing soykaf they aren't technically supposed to do I mean yeah, of course. It's what the guys at cs.rin.ru do. But at that point just torrent (unless you really want that demo i guess) >BG3 does not have valve's DRM, and you can play it completely offline with our steam closed. Doesn't BG3 have it's own launcher from CDPR though, regardless of where you buy it? Maybe that 2% that doesn't need you to log-in on the steam account is just games with their own DRM which can self verify proof of ownership.
Pris · 2026-06-17 11:35
>>9260 Not quite sure how they are doing today, but the way I did to play BG3 when it released was: a friend bought it on steam. I got the CSF from him and the game just worked^tm out of the box.

>>9255 >>9256 > I'll try it together with few other games later to see how many of my 7-8 currently installed games don't have DRM. So I just checked few Steam games I've been playing recently and 3 of them don't use Steam DRM and are runnable outside, with Steam app not running at all: Motorslice, Demon Turf, and Cavern of Dreams. Demon Turf is the Queens Edition one which is actually 3 games in 1, they were previously separate releases on Steam. The only difference is that Steam saves and username are ofc not visible/inaccessible and you start from clean state when you run them outside. Some games like Motorslice use Steam username in smart ways incorporated into the storytelling itself, in this case it was replaced by "Autonomous". Example run command: > PROTONPATH=".../GE-Proton10-34" umu-run ./MotorSlice.exe

Hypnospace Outlaw It's a great game in where you are a moderator of the internet in the 90s. You go into websites similar to geocities' ones and look for stuff to report that you got asked for through email. The whole time your interface is a whole OS where you have folders, executables, emails and a browser. There's even video and audio, viruses, etc. Then you get coins with which you can buy software, etc. Really enjoying it.

Otterly Lost - 3d platformer collectathon game where you play as otter, free demo on Steam. It was quite enjoyable to me. Has all kinds of modern extra mechanics like climbing and gliding, mini games and puzzles, etc. I only wish it had some teeth with some monsters trying to kill you, or even with you fighting them, etc. But the whole point might have been to avoid combat and make a fully pacifist 3d platformer, which is an admirable goal.

I grew up loving Need For Speed IV: High Stakes (PS1) and Gran Turismo 2 (PS1), so I decided to give this a try as it had the Ford GT90, McLaren F1... a lot of cars I loved from this era, and it seemed simple in its structure. Well, it's quite difficult too, the physics are crazy even in simulation mode, you'll spin and flip often, though your opponents will too, it's quite fun at first honestly, though when you're trying to win it can get frustrating, there's also a lot of rubberbanding, a God sent most of the time, but annoying in those few moments you can get ahead, I usually just win in the last few corners on the last lap. I'm still trying to win the tournament by winning the last race, the knockout mode though? No saving between races, so I'm not doing it, I know what I'm capable of and what I'm bad at. It's fun, I like it, but it's a flawed gem too, and the tracks are too narrow.
