Deus ex decompilation or playing deus ex on linux and *BSD
Nobody special · 2024-09-07 12:34
So i was pretty surprised that there is no way to play the original deus ex in these systems (aside from wine ofc) given that a lot of old classics today are either open sourced or decompiled or able to run in an engine written for linux or unix-like OSs (and everyone and their mother knows this gem here and in similar circles probably). Are there any on going projects to run it natively on these systems? Or is there any engine recreation to run it (like Grdb for baldur's gate and other infinity engine games or fallout-ce for fallout 1 and 2). The engine is unreal 1 but i don't really know soykaf about how stuff like this works or how hard is it to make engine recreations or decompile.
Maybe i should try getting a job...

I've got glitches with the original Deus Ex running through
Wine and Proton, but finished Deus Ex Revision entirely
through proton with no issues.
There is a lot of improvements on Revision but the new
lighting system is a downside, the game got even more
dark.
But I would really appreciate a new engine for the original
game, Deus Ex Goty is one of my favorites games and I
wasn't even alive when it released.

So I've managed to extract the (maybe full) source code (.uc files) from the official sdk found on moddb, which is a modified version of the unreal engine 1 sdk made for deus ex. (www.moddb.com/games/deus-ex/downloads/sdk-v1112fm)
I don't know how to compile this whole mess into a program. Apparently unrealscript (the .uc files) is almost the same as C++ and the "file" utility recognize every .uc file as a ASCII C++ program text, but the layout of the folders confuses me. On windows "umake" or "ucc" should be used from the "System" folder where the DeusEx.ini file is analyzed for the paths needed, but I don't know how to translate this into a linux system with a c++ compiler as I'm really just a beginner at this. I attached the folder structure from tree for anyone interested.

That's the only litmus test you need

Some steam games are worse then the physical copies
Ex. SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle
The game on disc is much better then the steam game

Come on man. When can we bring lynching back, just for a little bit?

We should lynch him twice: the first for raping children and the second for being an hypocrite.

"You see, the worst part is the hypocrisy..."
"Really? I thought it was the rapes!"

fuarrrk no. Do you want Twitter mobs to become literal lynch mobs? No, people just need to mind their own business and tell authority figures to fuarrrk off

Never anon, the un cancer has spread too far by now, its too late for people to reject their pedophile transsexual satanist cult that they appointed to rule over them.
Many more kids will be raped by government stoogies.
On the topic im suprised there is no opensource ue2 replacement, its something i could take on myself but i have little to no idea how the file formats work, if i had that i could rig up something.

Is UPK explorer open source, or at least enough of it? Should have some hints to glean about the format at least.

I'm also shocked there's no UE2 rebuild project in all this time, maybe there's one out there in some level of completion that I've missed (or has dropped off the net due to datarot)

Some games truly need to be adapted to modern systems. It doesn't even need a graphical update.
