New Doom?
Rei Gei · 2024-06-10 10:17
What do yall think of the new Doom announced yesterday? Personally. I'm confused how its a prequel to Doom 2016.
Crash Override · 2024-06-10 13:36
Doom will only ever be Doom 1, Doom 2, and Final Doom for me. I have absolutely no interest in this modern stuff that calls itself "Doom".

Frankly I concur. New-Doom games suffer from overcomplicating what should be a simple formula with stuff like preanimated takedowns and needing to constantly be switching your weapons around, and keep doing different takedowns to get health and ammo back because the devs didn't want to bother actually designing the levels around resource management like in Classic Doom. It has more in common with soykaf like Serious Sam - but with less monsters, lol - or Painkiller than Classic Doom, and the less said about Doom 3, the better.
I also genuinely dislike how they're handling the Doom Guy. Oh, sorry, Doom SLAYER, as a character. It feels completely Flanderized, like the writers took the memes about Doomguy seriously and just decided to make that his characterization. The game feels Flanderized in general, especially the atmosphere and the music. Apparently, the designers forgot a good half of the Doom soundtrack wasn't slayer riffs, but slower, more atmospheric and sinister tracks to accompany the sci-fi horror overtones.
I also dislike the plot being orders of magnitude more complicated than, "Demons are invading, fuarrrk e'm up." with UAC bullshit in 2016 and that malarkey with the Argent and the Maykrs and all that crap about the Doom Guy being this super mystical chosen one in Eternal, which Dark Ages seems to be visibly continuing. Again, I feel like it's a consequence of the fanbase's dumbed down meme perception of the Doom series bleeding nto Doom itself and generally cheapens it.

Just because something's different doesn't mean it's better. You're falling into the old politician's fallacy of:
>To improve things, we have to change things.
>We have changed things.
>Therefore, we have improved things.
The other Lainon's point is that the changes New-Doom made to the Doom formula aren't good ones, which I agree with.
William Holtzer · 2024-06-10 22:28
I think modern Doom is one of the few new things that haven't gone to soykaf to be honest. What gets me though is the way all modern FPS break the immersion by giving your character a personality. There's a reason Gordan Freeman is mute, it allows you to self insert much easier. But that's a battle lost a long time ago.
Ender · 2024-06-11 00:48
Albeit, too much repetitive for my liking; I liked Doom 3. Doom 2016 on the other hand, I can say it is totally too far fetched from Doom but as a standalone game It was pretty fun. The story scattered all across the wikis and stuff was interesting to say the least.
However, I haven't yet played any other continuations. I am looking forward to it and don't think new Doom would be bad as a game. The dev team the ambition which is a rare thing to see nowadays.
I hope it turns out good.

I agree with you guys. Also the few I've seen of the modern Dooms are too much colorful for my taste.
I stick to the classics. With the Brutal mod to add nervosity to the gameplay and I'm a happy man.

I never said its that its better. I said
>Well not everything is gonna be the same thing forever
Because things are gonna change in the future no matter how good or bad it is.

Oh neat. I just learned about this now.
I'm enjoying the look of the weapons. It's just a reveal rn. No strong feelings until it's released and people get to play it.
Switch · 2024-06-11 10:21
I liked all the games I played in the series
(Doom1, Doom2, TNT, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal)
so I have no reason to expect a crap product.
Haruyoshi · 2024-06-19 18:12
Mick Gordon's still at it? It's gonna be legendary.

Pretty unlikely. Mick Gordon said he isn't gonna do anything Doom since after what happened with Eternal

i largely agree with this except that i think that Doom 2016 did not Flanderize doomguy at all; just evolved him. a large part of 2016's enjoyment was experiencing and empathizing with doomguy's rejection of the larger plot (like when he shoves away sam hayden's exposition monitor). it was a really self-aware parody of modern-era video game "plot" and a really good continuation of the "doom spirit", imho.
Agent Smith · 2024-06-22 12:01
Doom Eternal is a good game, but i feel like ID didnt understand why people liked Doom 2016 so much, they didnt get why people liked Doomguy/Slayer, so they literally got too story focused and doom slayer got flanderized to hell, i hope this game returns to the aesthetics and story of 2016 that was more in line with the og games than the "parody" that was eternal (eternal is still a good game imo)

it looks like the movement speed was slowed down but not the gameplay tempo
H.R. Giger · 2024-07-12 07:43
I thought the balance between using cover and dodging projectiles in the original doom was fine the way it was. Switching the enemies to entirely using projectiles in 2016 was a bad idea. I feel like Im running around like a headless chicken in that game, I dont really think about what im doing, just always keep moving is all you need to do. what everyone says about the glory kills is true, i dont like being forced into that playstyle, its just boring. and about the barrels, there was a point near the end of the game, where i was like: "those things are supposed to be the explosive barrels from doom?!!" they really didnt understand the fun of them. the game really failed to be challenging in any kind of fun way, particularly the boss battles. alot of modern games forget that boss fights are supposed to be a difficulty spike, for them its just an asset spike. i havent tried nightmare mode so maybe that difficulty is balanced better idk. theres alot of good in the game in most aspects of it but overall i find that it gets boring quickly. i havent played eternal... im not particularly a doom fan but i loved brutal doom
Ivan Horvat · 2024-07-18 17:49
Are there any plans to make Doom something akin to a fast-paced dungeon crawler again? Doom 2016 felt very bland in that regard.
Nobody special · 2024-09-18 08:36
I can't sit down and play new doom for long like I can with the originals. >>7793 is spot on here with regards to the resource management and soundtrack. The sound design overall is just a mess to my ears, nothing has any real impact so it's just constant noise beneath the soundtrack. The levels in these new games bore me, the first half of 2016 was painful to get through and having to unlock abilities as you progress only makes it worse. I'd rather have all my fun options unlocked from level 1.
Also, it would be nice to have an actual multiplayer mode with 1v1 or FFA but I guess they want people to play Champions instead since it needs all the help it can get.

As someone who didn't enjoy Doom 2016, I enjoyed Eternal a lot more (at least as the game progressed) since it was essentially just 2016 with more interesting weapons, more movement options, better arena design and occasionally some actual level design. Harder and lots more enemies too which is good since one of the many problems with 2016 was how mindless and uninteresting the combat was. Enter arena, don't stop moving, switch between weapons that all do more or less the same thing, refill health with cutscene kill, etc. Enemies never really directed how I moved around, encouraged tactical thinking, prioritize targets, etc.
As far as story/character, the games are trying incredibly hard to suck your dick constantly. It's like the game is taking control away from you to tell you "WOAH, LOOK HOW EPIC YOU ARE, YOU PUNCH DEMONS AND DONT AFRAID OF ANYTHING. YOU'RE THE BIG ANGRY BADASS!!" It's cringe and never what Doom was really about to begin with. Even calling him "Doom Slayer" is flanderizing pretty hard because you're building up this dude to be some ancient mystic badass warrior instead of just some dude. Doomguy was literally just a random guy who was under so much pressure he could soykaf diamonds.
It was a very much "You're locked in here with them" kind of atmosphere instead of the "You're locked in here with me" theme the newer games try to pull.
I'd rather see them make a new single-player Quake game instead of more Doom.

you need to read those codex pages you find scattered, floating about in DOOM Eternal lol
I actually really enjoyed all the "deep lore" they go into with them, feels pretty self aware too, they come up with some very dumb self serious ways to explain the odd throwaway quirks of the original games which were obviously just as a result of the technology and standards of the time and never meant to be given any thought, but they really go out of their way to come up with reasons for it (tongue in cheek I feel)
>>7793
You're describing why I like the new ones. DOOM I & II are perfect, you can't improve them, so for me it makes total sense to go in the direction they did with 2016 and Eternal and make the focus these "combat loop/puzzles".

I don't think so. But There are some good newer retro FPS games like Cultic, Wolfenstein: Blade Of Agony, AMC Squad (used to be called AMC TC) and I Am Sakuya: Touhou FPS Game. I'm thinking about trying Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.
Other similar games can be found at https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/136771-every-gzdoom-game-on-steam/

Everything after Final Doom was high-production-quality crap that tried to substitute high quality graphics, movie-style "production", and idiotic-sounding voice actors for lack of fun and humor. Even the game-play was stupid, with creatures teleporting in from nowhere behind you after you though you had an area cleared. That's what happens when you get too many suits in the studio.

D16 was already going overboard with the gimmicky QTE but it could still be enjoyable. DE went completely retard with them and the weapon swapping.
It is frankly ridiculous how legions of players defended a system that supposedly brought depth when in fact they were just bewildered by a voluntarily design confusion that masks the reality, that the combos are in fact always the same and very few to enjoy. Just look at the optimized high difficulty plays and it's always the same pattern on and on.
The useless climbing, the goo, the Mario moments, the monkey bars and similar asinine ideas need to die too. I can't even understand how that kind of material could be accepted; methinks the producer didn't know what to do, as we know it all stemmed from the studio going round in circles with Doom 4, they had Martin jump – I would LOVE to know how ''he'' got in besides just being a big Doom fan – and somehow this proved to be good enough. Maybe he's the one behind having the idea of turning Brutal Doom into a new gen game, because that's literally what D16 was, 3D4K Brutal Doom with annoying cutscenes that are fun the first few times, at best.
>flanderization
It really is. That's because they played Brutal Doom and understood that the character really was acting like a demigod so it drove their entire narrative to push Doom Guy to be turned into that kind of killing machine through plot contrivances. Not that it was necessarily bad when serving as a backbone for this type of high octane action game, but it's definitely looking like a pastiche of the original material, which had a touch of horror from outer space that the new Dooms could never have.
One positive aspect is that you have a manly non-DEI figure and that alone is almost exceptional. Slayer is probably occupying a spot that Master Chief held during the entire Bungie era so many years ago.
>music
Djent is total crap. Don't get me wrong, I like metal, I listen to different styles, but this one is so transparently superficial, it's a style solely based on being one big noise-mod gimmick, as if to try to make it sound as manly as possible. It's really nothing more than a miserable petulant shallow style for easily impressed kids.
Worse of all is that we have the proof that the old tunes made more brutal did work very well.

I'm stunned that so many people don't even gasp at the stupidity of this name. Really, it's written like a fuarrrking iPhone app, the whole "r" used to sound like "er". It will age sooo badly.
>Dud Eternal
Going back on this one. In one of the lengthy videos about the game, they said how they were working on the sequel but it felt empty, something was lacking, and then one day they found that YT video of a player doing all the forced gun swapping in D16 and the devs thought that was the key to the new formula. But instead of making it an option blended with the more casual and classic game style, they made the combo system absolutely mandatory with every decision hinging around it, from the belch, the punches that do nothing on low tier zombies, the obligatory piñata shìt and so on. In other words, they got lucky with D16 because they had essentially thrown BD into a new engine, but they were clueless about what to do with its sequel.
Marketing did the rest, with all the soykafty slogans like, I can't remember but it was "bullet chess", "dancing something something", all with the git gud nonsense.
I didn't play DE because what I saw didn't appeal to me.
