why do video game remakes miss the mark all the time?
duck · 2024-01-30 14:15
why do video game remakes fail to capture what makes the original game special all the time even though they are good games they still fail as remakes let's take a look at RE2 remake or the RE4 remake and FF7 remake. i am pretty sure the MGS3 and Silent Hill 2 remakes are gonna be just the same.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

I liked REmake. Its hands down better than the original game in pretty much every way. What made it great was the way it built on all of the strengths of the original game and just expanded it by adding elements from other horror titles but kept true to itself. The only downside are Jill's jiggling boobs ruining the atmosphere and the way they retconned in the crap from Code Veronica. The Resident Evil 2 remake feels more like a nostalgic homage to the original and not a true survival horror game. It doesn't even live up to REmake. The game feels too easy, isn't really that disturbing, uses the the same 3rd person over the shoulder soykaf that's standard in every fuarrrking title for well over a decade.
SH2, FF7 and MGS3 are games that don't need remakes. They are perfectly playable today, except maybe FF7. Its just a shameless cash grab mimicking what Disney is doing with their live action remakes: the original audience have grown up now, so we'll put out a soykafty remake and they'll take their kids to go see it. This won't work with a horror game and a stealth action title. Its just Western Hollywood brainrot infecting Japanese corpos now. Yeah lets turn everything into a franchise, lets get the suits in marketing to make creative decisions, lets water down everything that made the originals unique so casuals can play it. Why? These are already some of the best games ever made. What makes these corpos think they can do it better?
P.S. Resi 4 sucked and they can remake the soykaf out of that I don't care

Wait, they remade Resident Evil 4? I presume it was to fix the soykafty controls that every Resident Evil game features--oh wait, they already did that. The only way they could have actually made this game better was by eliminating QTEs.
It's funny how rarely it seems that modern remakes address the flaws of the original game.
Well, what about that FFVII remake? Did they make the game a bit harder this time? Piss easy difficulty was by far FFVII's biggest flaw.

They don't make remakes like this anymore.

the same reason why all major platforms deviate from their original values, to attract newcomers

Honestly, Resident Evil 4 remake was just better than the original. Although, that's not saying much. The only thing I didn't like over the original is that it flattened out Leon's character, and removed the parts which were just supposed to be fun.

I'm so glad I got to experience this game for the first time on the Wii. One of my all time favorites and being able to point and shoot made it so much more satisfying

i always feel that remakes and remasters often miss the ambience effects and the art style, i always liked the ps2 era fog and rain effects, and when those games get remastered they often remove that, or in other cases the 4:3 and 480p adds to the game, and when it gets the HD treatment is kinda a let down, a downgrade

They definitely got this right

Diablo2 Ressurection was one of the rare good remakes.

Thread Secret Question: What is a "modern audience"?

It was a sequel.
The Zero remake precisely revamped the first ever Metroid game.

It's probably because the overall experience is worse. A lot of what people miss is the anticipation of grabbing the physical copy from when brick and mortar stores were at their peak. Or the old console interfaces where after the slick startup sequences focus was completely on the game itself. There were no updates or ads for anything so your mind was focused before it got hit with the full sensory output of the game.

Warcraft 3 was one of the few remake that was so bad it made the original worse.
