I personally plan on going into the gaming industry once I graduate high school and go to college and all that, I'm even taking a cte game design class right now to help with that. basically itt game devs talk about being game devs and talk about their work and stuff idk I'm tired sorry

>>7460 I made some little proof of concept thing back in December. It's not really much of anything, plus I'm not really a game dev nor will I probably ever be in any meaningful way. But I wanted to contribute to your thread.

>>7460 what field of video game developing are you planning on focusing? i'm designing a terrain brush plugin for Godot. i found out there's a good reason there aren't a lot of those on the market already: the plugin framework doesn't play well with editor input propagation and the 3D viewport. it's not easy designing an input method for it that doesn't feel hacked together with duct tape and prayer.

>>7460 I have wanted to make games most of my life and sometimes start a project and then usually abandon it. At this point not really wanting to make a career out of it, just have ideas I obsess over and have dreams about (most recent dream was a 2d platformer where you're trying to drag a physics simulated minecart around an underground river area with a rope but then fall down a waterfall pit and get some ominous narration). A common theme in my abandoned projects is, what I ultimately want to do revolves around some kind of intricate agent simulation, but since I'm trying to make a game where you exist in physical space, I end up putting all my effort into that aspect of it and never get to working on the part I'm actually interested in before I get bored and give up. So this time I'm just going to skip having graphics and make the interface more text based, pic related. Some features I'm excited about trying to include: - Local AI to help write code for the player to control behavior of npcs and other things - AMM inspired economic sim - npcs running simulations to see what the outcomes of choices might be

>7460 Hi OP. It's great that you've opened this thread: I was on the verge of opening one myself, but somehow found myself reluctant in doing so. >any other lainons here game developers (or at least trying to be) Yes, I consider myself a game developer because I want to develop games - both board and video - in the time to come. Developing is a really rewarding experience. Due to some personal stuff, the past months I haven't worked as much on my games as I've wanted to, but now I've picked up the pace again. Very quickly however, I arrived at the same blockade where I've now found myself multiple times already: I've a lack the knowledge on how to develop a game. This is both on the process-level (so from the concept/idea to a working game) as well as the practical side of it (which tools to use to get it to work). It's something that can be overcome, by gaining this knowledge. You seem to got that covered by going to game design class, and I hope it pans out well for you. For me, I don't think it's going to help, both because of financial reasons as well as the fact that I work best as an auto-didactic. What I am looking for in this is a good study book - or any information source for that matter - which covers the development of a video game from beginning to end. Do you know of any good books on that matter? And for anyone else reading this: can you help me find such a thing? Since I consider the 80's/90's/early 00's the best era of video gaming so far, my preference goes to a developer of that era. Any other information source outside of this era (p.e. a 'classic' manual on how to develop a game, either board or video), would be great to learn of as well!

I have some elaborate design documents for game mods I've been planning to make for a long time now, but I can never find the motivation to complete them.

>>7476 To the one that replied to this post but deleted the reply: I've really been thinking about your post and will ask more specifically what it is that I am looking for. This sounds like a Valentine's heart cry lol

>>7461 This looks like what I'm working on building. Making an engine for solo TTRPG systems with extensible tables, automatic bookkeeping for time, combat, and consumables (torches, food, spells, etc) and a note taking system for linking various player/system defined objects together. The thing I really like about solo rpgs is the ability to get pretty loose with it and start going "off the books" so to speak. I'm trying to figure out exactly where the division is between letting the computer handle something and allowing players to express their ideas freely. Like, if I think it would be more interesting for an NPC to be killed during a combat encounter, should they be allowed to just flip a switch and kill him? Or be able to convince a hostile enemy to join the party? Either way I like the way this looks, my idea for the layout was basically the same thing but with a window for notes and table rolling.

>>8384 i have very little energy by the time the day is done, sitting through traffic and having to drive around for endless errands along with daily chores after just makes me want to sit on the couch and just doom scroll or waste time watching useless videos. >>8403 thank you I am going to try this. I usually recollect myself on the weekends and am able to come up with ideas sometimes right before bed or just dozing off at work, issue is doing them right but I guess if i can save that for the weekend then maybe something can come of it. thank you fren.

i work on the new fable game and also do my own game projects on the side, but i only made my start in the industry in my late 20s.

i've recently been throwing claude fable at old games to see how much it can reverse engineer. here's the map of the 2006 cars game ported into simpsons hit and run with some custom player models and a car i ported. afaik the cars map format wasn't ever reverse engineered before. not really sure what to do what it though.
