Metroid Zero Mission

What is this? How does a game like this even get made? I've been playing games from the late 80s and early 90s for a few months now so it's so weird to me to play a game that I don't need to follow a guide in order to beat. Like I can just play the game and get to the end. That's wild man. Also there is so much stuff gated behind getting certain power-ups and abilities. How did they know? Did they build the levels around the ability unlocks?
Also the part near the end when Samus loses her power suit and gets chased around by weird alien lobster men is really scary and I'm stuck and I want it to stop. Why was this game rated E? Does Samus ever get a break? Does everything just keep getting worse?

I still maintain that this was a garbage remake that completely missed the point of the original game. After the trainwreck that was Fusion, this was the final confirmation to me that Gunpei Yokoi was the actual brains behind the Metroid series.

If you have a problem with that just play the original or use this hack https://metroidconstruction.com/hack.php?id=612

By holding your hand and telling you exactly where to go at all times. The whole point of the original Metroid was that its world is a big puzzle and it's up to the player explore and figure it out.
If you actually want to play a good remake of the original Metroid, just play Super Metroid. And if you get tired of Super Metroid, you should play some of its ROMhacks, many of which are far more creative games that respect the player more than the insulting phoned-in trash known as Zero Mission.

I actually got lost playing zero mission. Not like really lost because there is a map, but there were a few times I got stuck for nearly 30 minutes because I couldn't figure out what to do. Those moments were frustrating and I really didn't like them.

They are pretty decent. I used to play them back in the day, have fun.

I'm playing it on a laptop instead of a GBA and it's still pretty fun. Although at this point I'm mostly just playing because I want to help Samus escape from this weird alien hell world. Like I can't just abandon her. Zebes is like kicking dead whales down the beach.

At last, someone else who recognizes that Fusion was a bad game. Why they locked the player out of all exploration opportunities until the final ten minutes is beyond me.

I think the exploration in Metroid is actually kind of boring. It usually involves backtracking through the whole map just to find the one obstacle my powers let me bypass. It's just generally better to lay everything out in a straight line so the player doesnt have to go back through old levels again.

>At last
We weren't so uncommon back in the game was released. Fusion was the Other M of its day, it was almost universally recognized as an abomination. Now things only seem different because you have a bunch of people who played that traumatic pile of soykaf as their introduction to the Metroid series. Fusion isn't just a bad Metroid game though, it's a poor game in every genre it can be classified under. If you want to make excuses for its linearity like >>7289 by placing it among the peerage of other run 'n' guns, its action competency is on a tier far below the likes of a Contra or Metal Slug.

So you like it when you hit a dead end and then have to go back through the whole map killing all the infinitely respawning enemies and navigating all the hazards again? You think that's fun gameplay?

You... what? Fried attention spans I guess. I was playing through that soykaf when I was 5.

No my attention span is fine, it's just the business model for most games from that time was "fuarrrk you we have your money." Very few retro games were actually designed to be fun.

Not really. Back in the day rentals were very common. And I just said I was back in the 90's btfo'ing these games at like 5, counting pennies on the floor to go rent DKC2 again. GB Color running out of batteries, gotta save gotta save, BTFO Pokemon Yellow.
No. I think we've all just gotten that much dumber, and the world is accelerated. Also I started on the NEX when I was like 2, Tetris, Contra, tons of soykaf. No guide. Get on INFANT me's level bud.

Yeah see you're talking about good games. I'm talking about soykaf like Alpine Tram Ride.
Bobby Newmark · 2023-10-17 18:22

I do mean MOST games from that period were really bad. Like if you randomly picked 5 games from all the games available for DOS PC98 Amiga C64 NES MSX probably none of them will be fun and all of them will be really unfair and you wont be able to finish them without a guide.

Yeah, sorry. I was being kind of a prick there. I remember a lot of the NES games sometimes bordered on arcane, or at least sustained only by bizarre difficulty.

Here I'll choose 5 games from 5 systems for people to play, randomly:
FDS - Ultraman - Kaijuu Teikoko no Gyakushuu
Neo Geo Pocket - Neo Geo Cup '98
Sega Master System - Xyzolog
Super Nintendo - Umihara Kawase
Microsoft MSX - Ninja Jajamaru-kun
