Mirror's Edge

Are any of you guys fans of Mirror's Edge? It's probably the game I can play time and time again and not get tired of. Gameplay is as good as it was 15 years ago and the aesthetics feel sharper today compared to lackluster art direction of recent games.
Also there's some similarities between Serial Experiments: Lain and Mirror's Edge with both having Asian female leads with short hair and wicked personality.

I really loved the original and Catalyst had it's moments. How do you feel about the sequel?

I replayed Mirror's Edge earlier this year. It holds up remarkably well for a fifteen year-old game, though it can be frustrating at times with its clunky controls and level design.
It's a very unique game with a unique sense of style. I'm not even sure what you'd call that style. "Minimal futurism"? "Post-Y2K"? I suppose it doesn't really matter. One thing I found interesting while looking at concept art is that the developers seemed to have the stellar art direction of the game figured out very earlier on, though I never learned what could've inspired them. Maybe sportswear advertisements and artwork of futurist "cities of tomorrow". At the end of the day, it's a very aesthetically pleasing game.
Oh, and the music! The soundtrack of this game is one of my favourites, and I'm always kicking myself for not remembering to look deeper into Solar Fields' body of work. It carries over the minimalist style from the world itself but isn't afraid to get more intense during action sequences. I think my favourite song is the one that plays during the final level.

I've never played Catalyst though I've heard it's all right. Story seems to be a bigger focus than it was in the first game and I like the idea of it being set in an open-world. Maybe one day I'll check it out and see what I've been missing.
It's just a shame that EA and DICE have all but forgotten about Mirror's Edge. Faith deserves better.

I was pleasantly surprised by Catalyst. I went in with very low expectations and found myself having a lot fun. The game is definitely at its best when it's most similar to the original during the linear missions and the combat is massively improved. The open world and the aesthetics aren't terrible but they're really uninteresting. It still felt great to play a game with that Mirror's Edge feel.
Catalyst seems to have a more developed modding scene. I want to do a modded play through in the future.

Unique is definitely the best way to describe Mirror's Edge's style. It's not even that Mirror's Edge's strong use of color and art direction is particularly impressive, it's that it stands out compared to other games. A screenshot of Mirror's Edge is so much more captivating than the style of really any other game.

There's an argument to be made for other games when it comes to which has the most captivating style, but Mirror's Edge is certainly distinct. It's also ironic, given that the games take place in a dystopian future where the minimal style is likely meant to represent conformity.

Aesthetics can't save a bad game (first-person platforming)

I played it enough to know how athletic and flexible Faith is.
But I agree, it's a fun and aesthetically pleasing platformer.

Care to elaborate? The game can be frustrating on occasion but I consider it to be enjoyable. I wouldn't have played it multiple times if I didn't.

He just parrots what other people say. I'm pretty tired of NPC world myself.

The game attempts to combine two things that are like oil and water: platforming and a first-person perspective. They just don't mix together. Varied, exciting, rewarding, complex--in other words, good--platforming relies on having an intuitive sense of your avatar's collision zones--something which is simply impossible from the first-person perspective. The result (as in every other game that has ever attempted first-person platforming) is that the actual platforming action in Mirror's Edge is either boring and braindead or frustrating and annoying. There is no middle ground. It's an inherently flawed gameplay combination and Mirror's Edge--like all the others--was unable to resolve the contradiction in game design.

Ironically, this is a great example of slothful, conformist thinking. It must be easy to assume that everyone with an opinion you don't is simply repeating something they heard from others; that way you don't have to ever put effort into trying to understand things from their perspective.

It must be easy to assume that's how I function, rather than having to consider the basis and genesis of behavior in others.

As someone who can't stand most traditional platformers, Mirror's Edge appeals to me because of the first-person perspective. It gives me a sense of "being there" that other platformers don't. I can put up with the quirks and design flaws of the game because of the immersive aspect, whereas, with most platformers, I feel quite detached and unable to get into a proper "rhythm" or "flow".

Mirror's Edge definitely has that flow feeling. I guess it could just be described as the game being very immersive

I am actually casually, and slowly, replaying it ATM. I really like the game's art style and direction. And the gameplay is fun too. It has some quirks, but they are more than offset by over all quality of the game. I also enjoy that it's from first person, as that is quite unique in the genre (at least, I haven't seen other parkour/platformer games like that) and adds to the challenge of navigation. But they added runner's vision to help with disorientation.
I think this is my 3rd time playing it, and I am noticing many cool details in the world, like the elevator news and pet rat.
PhysX environment was also looking ahead of it's time.
I haven't played much of the sequel. When I tried it, it felt off so I never finished it. What do lains think of the sequel? Should I give it another go?
