what's current opinion on video games?
Trinity · 2023-06-08 17:59
On /v/ I posted a similar thread, and got a well thought out response that I will copy here:
Vidya is still a young medium, barely growing out of the insecure tendency of imitating other, more established media (see games marketing a "cinematic experience"). It has yet to come into its own.
You can't really tell [where its going] until you see it (unless you're one of the visionaries making it happen). It'll involve making full use of the possibilities of the medium, much like we went from a lot of early film looking very stage-y, because that was their frame of reference, to more and more dynamic stuff. But I think earlier games (e.g. 90s) were actually closer to what the medium could and should be, when tech got better we fell into the "cinematic" trap because everyone had the fantasy of making their favorite action movie interactive.

It's the biggest entertainment industry. And the biggest chunk of that industry is mobile games. And the biggest chunk of those are gacha games.

This is a shallow analysis that frankly misses the point. Video games aren't trashy cinematic experiences now because that's their legacy from infancy; from the very beginning video games were games of skill first and they understood what they wanted to be. The modern cinemaplay trend isn't a sign of youthful adolescence, it's a trend that commercial games grew into due to profitability pressures. Because treating a game like a disposable movie experience is how you force players to consume once and then move on to the next product. Ever notice how freeware/libre games are almost entirely gameplay oriented? Compare the amount of cinematic trash in the commercial game scene to the hobbyist game scene and the difference is night and day.

>Vidya is still a young medium
Video games are not a young medium. The first generation of video game consumers is in their 60s, Pong hit 50 last year. Video games are roughly where movies were in the 70s. It's a mature medium, this is it, it's iterative improvement from now on.
>>6999
You know what's really crazy? Video games are still growing 10% year on year, they'll be twice as big in like 2030. They will absolutely dominate the popular culture.
>>7001
You're on the spectrum, aren't you? Humans are a species of storytellers, every artistic medium is about storytelling, everything is about storytelling, it's human nature. Even sport is, the so called worlds greatest scene. The moment video games could tell stories they became a storytelling medium.

first generation of movie consumers is in its graves, first generation of recorded music consumers is dried bones, first generation of codex consumers have largely been reduced to dust. vidya is a new medium
>every artistic medium is about storytelling
still i think u can make distinkshun between i.e. dwarffortress/minecraft/factorio style games telling vs i.e. mass effect or halo. You might say these are all telling stories but there's clearly a distinction in how that story happens, how scripted it is, what the player's practical role is, his effect on the outcome. There's more than just these two types as well, what about flight simulators, trucking simulators ? If you say games are media and media is telling stories, tell me the story of chess or backgammon.
There's more going on here than 'telling stories'.

What do you care? There are plenty of games that are art, but they are not super popular so you think they are not already here.
It's like to say remove comic book movies now or remove westerns when they were everywhere.
If there's a wave of artistic games, good, it will pass eventually and leave the best parts of this movement going forward.
Games as art is not the destination, but it may certainly be a stop on the way to it.

>were actually closer to what the medium could and should be, when tech got better we fell into the "cinematic" trap because everyone had the fantasy of making their favorite action movie interactive.
I somewhat disagree. As people understood that games are actually profitable, just like movies nowadays, we are getting big companies trying to make a buck from the industry. This means that, from these companies and from their product, we'll get alot of "safe" game making strategies. Things like EA with it series of sports games or Activision with COD... (Althought a bit bolder with it's recent installments of the games, but the core mechanics are rarely changed)
The rare ones that get to toy with the medium as a whole and still make it big are the games that already have a well established name and series. For example, Valve with Half-life (Innovating gameplay thru the medium it is played on and the tech used) and Capcom with Monster hunter (Every installment always brings and removes features/gimmicks every game. Even good ones. I think it's in favor of experimentation and keeping the game fresh... please bring back prowlers.)
I think indie devs are much more experimental than companies because, while they do need to make money of their games, the stakes aren't has high unlike game companies. Most importantly, they aren't exactly restricted to the same restrictions companies have while making a game. For alot of them, they don't have a series of games with fans to cather to. This comes with drawbacks, thought. They don't have the same manpower and technology the big companies have, so they are limited by how much they are willing to toy with the bideo game medium and time. (Sure. you have the Unreal engine and the likes, but, putting myself in the shoes of a game dev... I have no clue how to make my game consistantly pretty like how the big boys do. I know gameplay and code.)
I do agree the industry in general seem to have fallen in that cinematic trap that anon talks about, but I think not all in the industry have. Really wonder how far the medium will grow as it gets more mature. We really are just toying with all kinds of wild ideas atm.
Mentat · 2023-07-14 12:20
Videogames' whole thing which makes them different is their multiple paths, and interactivity. The problem is if you are trying to tell a story, you the author usually want to control all the pacing and details, decide exactly who the characters are, and the have it closed at the end.
Personally, I feel pretty great after playing eroge games, because I went in and participated in a happy story which made me feel good physically, and it's capped at the end by my own story of 'I had a great time and feel inspired, and now I've came and I can go enjoy something else.'
Playing mount and blade, meanwhile, I put in effort, get interesting rewards, but there's always more effort to put in, and I get bored with it, and end up feeling duty to keep going, and stress about not doing something better.
I think ideally, games should therefore be tied to physical pleasures and to our own life stories. This is because a noninteractive work can have characters who make their own decisions with their own personalities, but a videogame character will always be more of a disposable player avatar, with only the traits players allow them to express. By making the player themself the focus, and sating their desire before sending them away, games could surpass noninteractive works by putting grand stories into the actual lives of their players. Still, games meant to make you eat healthy or do chores seem inauthentic to me, and I have no real ideas other than eroge games.
In general, I think you should have a goal before consuming media, and games could fit this goal in some cases, but often aren't as good as other forms, and are far easier to make addictive, so they usually get surpassed by others.

As a fellow eroge enjoyer, I must respectfully disagree.
Honestly the physical pleasure you describe is not nessesarily required as you are not obliged to participate in those kinds of activities during playtime.
Even more, some eroge games have hours of gameplay before anything risque starts to happen, for example God Catching Alchemy Meister.
It's not a bad thing nessesarily thought, the game itself is pretty fun and when that aspect opens up it is very surprising and as a result arousing since it took some real effort to get there.
I think that's really the crux of it, the feeling of accomplishment.
Eroge usually have plots that come to a definitive conclusion while at the same time having hours of gameplay through a lot of side content or replayability.
Plus I find good eroge just like good action games are best when complimented by a colorful cast that is thrust into a narrative that you feel invested into.
The fact that you develop sexual attraction to some of the characters only helps you to get more invested.
Thus the best eroge are those that don't front load the game with sex scenes, have a solid gameplay outside of this aspect and a good cast and story that is more than a thread that connects sex scenes that have little to do with each other.
Something like that is like an equivalent of a full course meal in terms of experiences that it provides.
Actually, for many non erotic and/or not slice of life heavy franchises the additional materials made by the authors or fans can really enhance the experience.
Some people hate "filler" in their media, but I feel that sometimes knowing what kind of music or food the character likes and what is everyday life is like is very important.
But that's just me and only with a very small selection of franchises that I love.

Its pretty telling that you are referring to Video Games as stories. Words are what make stories. Really, any movie or show is just words with context. Keep dialogue out of Video Games. Any game that contains dialogue would be better if it did not. Do not mix the genres of Toy (such as Vidya) and Story (such as Movie).

What?? Video games have already been their own medium since the late 70s. There's nothing they can be other than video games. 90s video games were already pushed to their maximum and there's nothing more than can be done other than having new game ideas within the constraints of that time if you go for the (pseudo)retro style. They certainly don't even need to grow out of anything, they already achieved their perfection a long time ago. Anything about making interactive movies is at best a regression, maybe a subgenre in itself pushed to its extreme by barely interactive movies in the 90s and late Quantic Dream games.

>Humans are a species of storytellers, every artistic medium is about storytelling, everything is about storytelling, it's human nature. Even sport is, the so called worlds greatest scene. The moment video games could tell stories they became a storytelling medium.
The difference with sports is that the story isn't pre-written and it's not particularly deep nor very rewatchable except for very exceptional games. It owes a lot to surprise than movies or books. Video games had much more to do with sports than movies.
Video games don't need stories as there are whole types of video games that do without them and are perfectly fine.
By definition a cinematic is not interactive so you moving away from the video game essence.

Games that try to be art unavoidably reduce their gamey aspect and show for the pseudo artsy liberal bullshit with a "message" which is totally compliant with the current thing.

Toys tell us about relationships between things, and we play with the relationships, like the world a Barbie could live in, or where a bike can go by turning the handle. It’s sort of like a story, but yeah, story is a bad word for it.
Games which aren’t character driven, but tell about relationships between things like this one about game theory
https://ncase.me/trust/
Are a pretty great use of the medium. Games can tell stories, but they’ll only do it well, when their stories of how things interact.
In a way, eroge is better than a romance novel, because the medium means you have to put work in to get more in the relationship where, in a novel, all the romance and love will be experienced just by you being a passive viewer, which is a mindset, causing great damage in many relationships. Still, the story of the relationship will always be worse told due to less authorial control of the experience.
>>7136
Yeah this seems correct. Art is media we feel touches on important things to our life, and we deeply connect to. A knee jerk reaction is to say ‘real life is the most uncomfortable, real, and satisfying story of them all, so don’t consume media’ but there are certain stories, like being a powerful hero you probably won’t have in life. Idk on that.
