Moving on from an MMO

Liet Kynes · 2023-03-21 03:32
There is this MMO that I've been playing since my childhood, it's one I had some of the most fun and most human experiences out of the bunch. I drew, I wrote, I roleplayed, this thing had a big impact on me growing up basically. I've grown really fond of my character and the little setting built around her, she become a bit of a funhouse mirror image of my childhood self. But the game itself has slowly become despicable. I'm tired of the developers and I'm even more tired of the playerbase. There is nothing worth playing the game for, all my old friends have moved on and bots and general toxicity made finding new ones not worth the trouble. Even I haven't logged on in months now. I still like this little setting I've built over the years, it's fun to write and draw things relating to it to this day, but there is this overlapping sense of bitterness that I just don't want to deal with anymore. It makes me feel like I should be better off shredding all the files of old memories and try moving on cold turkey. How do I deal with this, lain?

>>6775 Is it Runescape, Lainon? Anyway, I suggest finding something else to play. FFXIV for example might fill the void.

>>6776 Oh I have been doing other things. As I said, I haven't logged in for months. I could delete my account and honestly not shed a tear for it, to be fair. It is not really about the account I have on the game, it's about the character as a character and all the childhood memories related to it that I feel have been soured by the game becoming a soulless cash cow.

>>6777 Whats there to do other than let time take care of things? You wont feel bitter forever

hello lain, i was hopelessly addicted to wow for my early adult life. i had zero fun in the game, all my friends left, devs meticulously babality'd every fun aspect for casuals, moved to wrath pservers, but they would go down and i'd waste 100 days of my life. eventually i decided i would never play a microsoft-blizzard-activision game after turning 30, and instead spend all the time i would've poured into someone else's game into designing my own. been staying the course so far, and while i'm not where i want to be with my game yet, i still am lightyears ahead of where i would've been had i not just dropped something i knew in the back of my mind was against my own principles. so that's my suggestion, maybe find a group of similarly oriented gamedevs and you can relive, reimagine, recode, reinvent, recreate those experiences that meant so much in a brand new way that is entirely your own.

>>6776 Any game made by a big company will inevitably become a cash grab. FFXIV is not immune to this. >>6780 This is good advice. Creating something of your own is a lot more fun than consuming some company's attempt at milking you for money.

>>6781 Yeah sure lainon. >>6780 Like this lainon said, I advise getting into another hobby, especially a creative one. You say you have so many cool character and art you're attached to? Make a comic or a novel about them (Change some things up obviously). You can still have fun!

>>7025 World of Warcraft was that for me. Like the travelling, the past is a different country you can never return to...
