Any lainons on VRChat? They have some pretty cool lain worlds, there's even a Cyberia where the guy who made the music for the series would livestream DJ there.
H.R. Giger · 2023-02-15 12:33
I don't go on VRChat alot, let alone in public worlds. When I do I usually hang out in the movie worlds or go world dumpster diving in the search results. (I've been trying to find some cool free quest compatible dragon avatars, but looks like I'll just have to model one to my liking myself.) >there's even a Cyberia where the guy who made the music for the series would livestream DJ there. Oooo I never knew that! That's cool as hell. I'll start looking up cyberia worlds if that's the case!

i too read about other lainons here hanging out at cyberia, seems like a cool place I wish i had the requirements to run vrchat though :(... have fun for me!
Dozer · 2023-02-15 18:33
i would never install non-free software that i could not view the source code to however, it looks like a lot of fun jaron lanier constantly talks about how the difference between 3D and VR is that in 3D you go out and explore vast landscapes, whereas in VR the immersion comes more from tricking your brain into what You can Be, control over something besides human. But just like how people made kitchens and toilets in 3D games where they could go anywhere, people still haven't maximized this potential either.

>>6649 Hmm, I used to get on VRC a lot. Spent about six months straight on it, while I was unemployed. Then I went through a breakup, and in the process, made a major mess of the group of friends I was in. I don't use it much these days because there's no incentive for me to, with, yknow, having no one to talk to on it. Plus I just live a different lifestyle now and I find it hard to muster the desire to get on, especially with the bad memories. Then there's this little fear that if I started getting on it again, I'd slip back into the kind of person who would make those mistakes. It's not very reasonable, but I've worked really hard to learn from that mess and be a better person, and I don't wanna trip over the same thing I think the only thing that'd convince me to get on VRC again would be the opportunity to apologize to the people I wronged, but that's not exactly an everyday thing, and it wouldn't keep me there long Wow this ended up being more of a blogpost than I intended. Mieker · 2023-10-13 07:21
>>7263 >VRchat just for those friends with Quest Yeah the Quest, both a blessing and a curse upon the game. I am interested in other people's thought on this, how will this develop assuming that the market for VR wont just die out in the next decade again. Will we rather see standalone devices like the Quest or devices that rather are an extension to the PC like the Vive and so on? The Quest is cheaper and easier to use for normal consumers, but does not offer any ability to really keep pace with changing requirements without buying a newer model, if such a thing exists. We already see the issue when wanting to play with friends, you have seen a pearl of a map but it is only accessible for PC users but also the number of people that have been brought to VR through the quest. I personally think that we will hopefully see the development of cheaper extensions of the PC, as at the end of the day, all it is, is a display, some sensors and controllers with hopefully general interchangeability between controllers in the future, as is already trying to be achieved with certain software like Driver4VR.

>>7273 >I am interested in other people's thought on this, how will this develop assuming that the market for VR wont just die out in the next decade again. To me standalone headsets are the smartphones of VR and I am not looking forward to the day VRC is perverted into a microcosm of the internet around 2010. PCVR only spaces will provide a refuge that the internet could not. Could you imagine how different 4chan/[beloved 00s site of your choice] would be if there had been a way to disable smartphone browsing/posting, or at least had an option to block the posts/threads of smartphone users?

How is the VR support on Linux? This thread made me look up headsets and the Valve one is like $1200
Tequila · 2023-12-26 08:10
Theres a few ways to do it on Linux. Traditional GPU passthrough to a VM is the go to for most people, though you'll get less overhead using a KVM instead of a full VM. I dont use one personally, but Ive heard a claim that its only about a 5% overhead running a Windows KVM from your Linux. YMMV obviously. As far as headsets go, its an awkward time for Steams flagship headset, the Index. We should be close to an announcement of a new one soon, but thats also been a running joke for the past near 2 years. The Quest 3 got released and while I wouldnt touch it with a 10 ft pole for reasons of who owns it, it is still a fantastic piece of hardware for what it is. If you want the VRC experience but dont want to drop alot of money on the newest, I would recommend trying to find a used Index or HTC Vive. A used Quest 2 is also in the cards, though to play with anyone above the age of 13 you'll need to cable it to your PC anyways with Airlink or Virtual Desktop, so you might as well go for a used wired headset anyways. The picture quality even on the original Vive still holds up, and the screen door effect is soon disregarded once you get used to it.

>>7260 Just going to say this once, because i'm still salty about it: crypto wasnt forced into Neos. It was there since 2018 as a simple little way you could tip people or as rewards for community events and to help fund things. Literally no one cared. It was when later in like 2022 or so when crypto became this partisan dirty word that the majority furry population of Neos started throwing a fit. Before then, the devs were all playfully pushing their crypto in livestreams, but once it became a hot issue on twitter, the devs distanced themselves and started trying to kill it because they didnt like being on the wrong side of public opinion (which is common furry behavior). No one should care, except a lot of Japanese users of Neos, completely divorced from Western political discourse, had no idea this was happening. Loads of Japanese users ate soykaf having bought a coin they weren't being told was being abandoned by devs as they hinted at on English channels coyly, while the furry dev team dumped their load on the open market and pointed fingers at one person, then claiming the crypto was all his idea. Worst thing is most of the Japs bought because they were trying to support the game they loved, and to this day very few really know what actually happened, they just believe "crypto was forced into it" cause its easier to understand

People usually the say this usually results in some Frankenstein outcomes that usually aren't better. I'm curious why they always do this then.
Erik Johansson · 2024-11-05 13:50
>>8098 I don't actually have any experience with making stuff for VRChat other than an avatar and the last time I even played the game was before Udon was introduced, neither do I have much experience with high-level languages but I can try to explain some low-level aspects of Udon and why I think it exists. Udon scripts are compiled to Udon bytecode, bytecode is meant to be hardware independent so you would only have to compile once and let the clients interpret the instructions through a virtual machine. It's basically machine code for a virtual special-purpose processor which is why C# can be compiled for it using UdonSharp. There's also the security aspect (this is the interesting part), because the bytecode's functionality is limited to what the VM is programmed to do through its interface with the rest of the VRChat client it could prevent otherwise malicious code from being able to execute directly on your computer, i.e bytecode in avatars and worlds can't perform an action on your computer if the VM itself isn't capable of doing it. As for the node graph programming, it's meant to not be overwhelming and only focus on what's relevant to the game, making it more accessible.
Pulse · 2024-11-06 03:20
>>8099 Thanks for the insight. My limited knowledge is this is sort of like assembly? And whatever is built to read the code either reads what it was programmed to read and it doesn't matter if there was an exploit in it because if the thing reading the code was net set to interpret that exploit then exploit doesn't work. I'm guessing this is sort of how an analogue chip works. Reading a bit more about UDON I found this: https://boxcat.site/blog/2022-10-10-udon/ Basically says "udon is slow, and recommends not to 'roll your own code' and instead use something like Lua". Lua also seems to be bytecode. And I found ChilloutVR, which uses Lua and says this "Lua is one of the oldest, but most-used purpose-made embedded scripting languages on the planet, and is used in many games and applications. While the syntax appears archaic, and lacks features that newer languages have, its simplicity gift it speed and efficiency unmatched by its competitors. Alpha Blend Interactive spent considerable time looking at alternatives, and after much research, ultimately decided that Lua was the best fit for our needs. We hope you enjoy creating with it!" I'm not suggesting switch to ChillVR. I'm just sharing what I read and I like to learn. Maybe Udon got better since that article was written in 2022.
Nobody special · 2025-02-09 11:34
The speed of Udon isn't particularly important as for the most part you never do anything complex with it when making a simple world. The only time it needs to be more complex than that is when you're trying to (poorly) imitate some other game within the vrchat system or sync a ton of variables across a large number of players (I saw this issue with a randomised sorting system on a map meant to pair you with a stranger to talk to). In regards to unity and hammer, unless you just intend to kitbash something together from existing assets you would be better off looking into blender than worrying about unity too much to begin. Most of the custom assets you might make for a map are going to be made there, then imported into unity in the same sort of way (conceptually) that you load a .mdl into hammer. I hope anon comes back with a map in the future, the reason I enjoy VR so much is because it's the closest you can get to being inside someone's mind, I feel.

Have 1300+ hours in VRC, Slackware 15.0 with some custom compiled newer versions of Mesa, Vulkan SDK, libdrm, pipewire, and ALVR. A rooted Pico 4 (you can run wireguard, termux, ssh, emacs, and GCC and write you some C or Lisp in VR). Buggy setup in general, spent dozens of hours bugfixing, had to write Rust and C++ code myself, stracing, hijacking linked libraries, modifying Vulkan layers, etc. But worked well enough in general for me. Enough to make half a dozen good friends, and find me a literal wife from half-across the planet (we're together for 2 years or so now, lived around 1 year of that together, then forced apart, because fuarrrk stupid countries and their brain-dead immigration laws).

Erik Johansson · 2025-05-02 20:05
What makes me uncomfortable about VRChat is the fact there are outrage bait YouTubers who use it and have no respect for privacy or minding their own business. This is part of why I was hoping someone could make a privacy focused one that helps prevent people recording what is going on and obscure motion detection to prevent identifying people by how they move and use tech against AI voice cloning of users. Have ability to operate on a meshnet or P2P not just central servers. Stuff like that.
