Worlds.com (aka Worlds Chat, Worlds Online, or just Worlds) is a « 3D entertainment portal », or less autistically known as an MMO, first made in 1995. You’d be forgiven for thinking that it is completely dead in 2023 due to it’s age, but you’d be wrong!
It still exists with a small but friendly playerbase. I’m drawn to it because of the fact that it hasn’t really been updated much since its birth. If you hop on, you can find some pretty cool worlds made by people as far back as 95, all with a comforting yet liminal feel to them.
Over the years Worlds has been subject to rumors surrounding « cults » roaming the game, but that’s all they are: rumors. I believe it was Worlds players that started them for funsies and to attract new players from other imageboards starting in 2012, then regulars started getting harassed around 2020 after a bunch of YouTube videos brought more attention to it. There are imageboard archives of people discussing the goofs and the spooks of Worlds.com if you really wanna look it up. It’s quite interesting and honestly the whole reason I know about this cyber relic, but please don’t hop on and start asking about the cults, it’s somewhat frowned upon now.
If you do decide to jump on, I encourage you to explore to your hearts content! You can find some really cool places on there, but you’ll be hard pressed to find many people in a lot of the worlds. The most interaction happens on Ground Zero (the main lobby, if that’s what you wanna call it)
I’ll expand this thread with some pictures from worlds which I personally enjoy exploring

Mugshots! A collection of selfies and pictures of Worlds players. I’m pretty sure Jimbly (this worlds’ creator) remade muggies, since a bunch of rooms disappeared. Idk, I haven’t checked recently, maybe it was an error which he fixed

The game itself is weirdly scary to some extent, but i still like it anyway. It looks fun to walk around, relaxing. Reminds me of yume nikki.

Does this thing work through central server like WoW or is it decentralized like Minecraft where veryone can host his own server?

You can host your own WoW server.

I went to the website and it's full of ads that explain why you should invest in this game. Like, videos and paragraphs. It really seems like a data hoarding thing but i hope I am wrong. Anyways, it seems cool, how can I play this?

Gee bill, there's leaked LoL server?
Sorry, bad analogy. Roblox or Second Life would be more appropriate. Both can (could at least as I remember) import files created offline with third party software, but all "worlds" were hosted centrally unlike Minecraft or GMod where each server exists independently of optional central directory listing.
I see these .world files in >>6585 archives, opening one with a text editor I see how they point to textures and sounds hosted on http directory, then there is this line right at the beginning
worldserver://www.3dcd.com:6650/
There's a bunch of different domains working or working partially:
https://www.worlds.com/
http://www.worlds.net/
http://worldsonline.com/
http://www.worldsonline.com/
https://worldsonline.com/
http://userworlds.com/
http://www.3dcd.com/
Btw, look at this dotcom boomeresque PDF they published last year:
“Worlds is now entering the third iteration of the metaverse – one where augmented reality
(AR), cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have emerged as disruptive
forces reshaping areas as diverse as music, gaming, sports, fine art collecting, and shopping,”
stated Thom Kidrin, CEO of Worlds Inc.
