(I don't know if this is off topic but I'll move it elsewhere if so)
Recently started my interest in chess and found no thread on it. The porpoise of the thread is to discuss the game and other stuff like books and polemics.
To hit it off, what is lain's take on Hans Niemann cheating scandal? I think it might not be the case seeing the performance of the guy in the current open tournament in spain.
Unspecified · 2022-12-06 12:19
Kinda lost interest in the Niemann scandal a couple weeks after it happened. I have, however, been practicing chess more recently. Trying to learn more openings, because I keep forgetting my black responses and the Caro Kann that I really like.
I've been taking a small break from playing ranked to focus on some fundamentals, because my ranking was going down for a while. Chesstempo tactics and Naroditsky speedurns and all that. Fun stuff.

how to learn 2 play chess for someone who hasn't played it before?
Also, how can I practice it?

Hey! OP here. I was wondering if chessly courses are any better than learning from books considering the price of both.

Any recommendations for managing ladder anxiety? With chess being seen as an "intellectual" game it's hard for me not to wrap my self worth in losing and playing really badly. This just leads me to not want to play at all.
I know the obvious advice is just to play and not care about it, but it's harder for me to play until I get better than to not play and keep a fickle sense of ego about being alright at the game as a child.
Any advice appreciated.

Lichess has a setting to hide ratings site-wide, and Zen mode which hides everything but the board, clock, and move list during the game.
Or you can play unrated games or practice against bots.

It's more playing the game in general than the rating system. I've tried playing against bots but it doesn't feel the same considering it's missing the human element.
I'm fully aware the way to get over it is to just play, but it's hard to take the first steps.

Magnus is on the decline. Not because his age magically made his brain rot, but his ego rose to unfathomable heights.
Old people become "dumb" because they won't humble themselves to learn a new skill, to admit that they're "dumb" in that particular new skillset.
His ego was obviously hurt, the public simply followed along to his ego so that they don't lose their golden goose and cash cow.
Reality of situation, however grim that it is, that capitalism stifles inovation and promotes status quo for some abstract idea of "control of money markets".
Hans Niemann dindu nuffin, leaf him alon.

Could you elaborate on why you think that is the case with Magnus? I haven't followed his most recent performances.

Install gnome-chess and gnu+chess (lichess and chess.com app are good options on Android). Visit your local library and borrow a book. First play against the computer and learn how to move the pieces and the rules.

He keeps losing on tournaments, he doesn't have perfect score anymore.
He even stopped defending his title and going to tournaments less.
Let's face it, he is 32 now, and most career chess players do it until they're 35 and then the go coach mode or some other route, because brain starts to decline and they don't have such stamina of a young guy.

Kasparov played until 42 i think, and retired as world #1. Grischuk is 39 and Aronian is I think 42. Both. Still active and 2700+. Kramnik reached his highest rating ever at 40+.

I am not going to visit that website because it has cookies based on legitimate interest and companies that use that, are cancer. So, purely based on the image, I thought the following
Rd6* Kd6
Qe7* Ke5
Rf5*
But there's no good follow-up toRf5: the King just moves to Kd4 and white can't check with any pieces and is down a rook

Ive recently discovered the joy of 7 day move games. Coming back to the board after forgetting everything what has happened so far, and then thinking of each move like a puzzle has lead me to have some of the most consistently high rated accuracy games in a while. I average around 1350 on chess.com, but have had some decent "machine rated" 1800+ games against a similarly matched friend of mine.
Highly recommend that you give it a try. Though playing against random people is not recommended due to potential abuse of engines. Regardless, if anyone would like to add me both my lichess and chess.com are kurisusip, hope to have some good games with you all!
Im also soon to participate in my first IRL tournament next month, hoping to learn alot

Karpov's games and overall playstyle are what keep me coming back to chess. His genius is so unique even compared to most modern players I've seen. I just can't help but rant about how motivating it is as an intermediate player. His plans are often unintuitive at first glance but always very instructive - it really shows how much work you can do with proper planning, even in calm and closed positions, and how even very subtle ideas can make all the difference. I'm sure that my attempts at learning from his style must appear similar to what a monkey's interpretation of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa would look like, but still, it makes me happy.

How did the tournament go?
It seems like our level is somewhat similar, maybe we could play later if you're around.

been playing for just a couple years now. its been great experience for meta learning and dealing with improving at something that requires frequent failure. for the first year or so i got too anxious so almost never played live games. lichess zen mode helped me get over it, and ofc sheer reps.
was initially doing a ton of puzzles. live started making more sense once i realized short timers are counterproductive. for over half a year ive been playing rapid games (usually 10+0) semi regularly. alas ive languished just above 1000 that whole time. today i tried some 30+0 games. even tho none were perfect i felt way more aware of what was going on and was able to catch more mistakes. a few months ago i got Logical Chess by Chernev -- only got thru a few games, but i reckon i could learn tons once i get back on it. was an interesting enough read, but i gotta be intentional since normally i read before bed (not ideal for focus+memory) and for this i want to have a board out. hitting a 1150 baseline this year seems achievable. another hundred or two would be awesome.
