Are old video games worth playing?

Ender · 2022-11-23 17:45
Who the fuarrrk still plays retro soykaf? We should only play the newest games on the newest systems and ignore anything over a year and a half old. Nobody's going to buy, say, Chrono Trigger, in 2022 because it's an old game. Nobody plays it anymore. The graphics suck. We're not in the 90s anymore. Play modern popular video games only!
Agent Jones · 2022-11-23 17:47
I agree. I used to love playing Wolfenstein 3D when it came out but now I hate it because it's old and the graphics are terrible by today's standards. I only play the newest games.
Zhora · 2022-11-23 18:27
New graphics suck though I don't want more polygons, I don't want my PC feeling like it should stress over a lackluster RPG game
Mario Rossi · 2022-11-23 19:33
Developers do the best they can with the tools available. Beloved games have been produced despite technological limits. The difference must be passion. A game that functions well and has an engaging story is entertaining. Outstanding games are produced with imagination that goes beyond graphical capacity. Its definitely tangible when a game was produced by a studio of creative individuals who made a unique experience for us to enjoy. Retro games may look charming compared to VR immersion, but I'm still completely aware these games are a fantasy diversion no matter how realistic they appear. What matters is they're fun to play.
SHODAN · 2022-11-23 20:13
>The graphics suck It's been 22 years and we still haven't seen better graphics than Metal Slug 3.
Ivan Petrov · 2022-11-23 20:20
The value of old games is that they were made without defined notions of what a game should be. They were exploring a new frontier. This is also a flaw of course, frustrating and broken UI and gameplay were more common. But when was the last time you saw a game with high production values trying to pull crazy soykaf to the extent of a game like Black & White? Games now are full of remakes and by-the-book refinements of existing, proven-popular concepts. You do not see as much exploration into entirely new sorts of games, except sometimes in the space of very small indie teams, but that limits the scope of the creative effort. Even there, since marketability is heavily focused on the clearly visible aspects of the game that can be communicated in seconds, and modern game engines make it simple to rehash existing designs, innovation is limited. There is little financial reason to make a game that works in an unfamiliar way that would take more than three seconds for a player to understand.
Jens Hansen · 2022-11-23 22:17
>>6468 Sports games are a fun example indeed. The graphics just get better and better and there is no reason to have a story so you would think things would be perfect, but no. To this day, a quite old tennis game is still the gold standard for the balance of "feel", not realistic enough that is unplayeable and not "gamey" enough that it doesn't look like the sport it represents. And even in the money making machine that is football that feel has been quite uninspiring for a while.
Koos van der Merwe · 2022-11-24 05:25
I know it's a bait post but >Chrono Trigger >The graphics suck Well... beyond the horrendously bad take, There's just nothing that comes close to Diablo II for me for ARPGs. Granted, Resurrected came out and I now play this by default and If I'm away, I have the classic game on my USB that I travel almost everytime with (No DRM, too!) Put it simply, It's purely because of gameplay. Unreal Tournament 99 is still a banger after all these years and the soundtrack fuarrrks. If you don't care about graphics, you can still get a kick from older games. (Lil tangent: nobody is going to buy Chrono Trigger in 2022, just grab it from the internet web archive. It's literally free.)
Spooky · 2022-11-24 10:00
Graphics is a non-issue with older games but I can't stand the awkward controls, lack of modern quality of life issues and interfaces. And it's not like it's purely because of age of those games, Gothic has always had bad controls, people were complaining about it the day it came out.
Drifter · 2022-11-24 15:28
this is obviously bait but i only play retro games because i think the graphic and engine limitations work in their favor most of the time. i don't care how realistic new games look because realism is something i was never looking for in vidya. and this is without saying stuff like how retro games were more challenging because of the lack of save files and arcade replayability. with old titles you literally just press start and begin playing, you can't say the same about new games. sage. >>6466 to be fair the game design of wolf 3D hasn't aged well in my opinion. the design is too samey, lots of boring mazes and empty rooms. try some doom WADs and you'll never look at modern shooters again.
Morpheus · 2022-11-24 19:34
>>6465 You are only upset cause you cannot handle challenging games.
Rick Deckard · 2022-11-25 08:11
>>6465 >Nobody plays it anymore. Will still find new stuff even 1000 hours in. >Nobody's going to buy, say, Chrono Trigger Pirates >The graphics suck. Vibe matters more also new games are generic and ugly Also mods Go play Morrowind you N'wah.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2022-11-25 09:13
I play only retro games because I don't actually like video games but I do enjoy the nostalgia of playing my favorite games from my childhood.
The Plague · 2022-11-25 12:35
Older games are what I spend easily >95% of my game-playing time on these days. I've become so disillusioned with modern game production and cancerous aspects of the commercial games industry that it largely feels like a waste of time and effort for me to stay up to date on the latest pile of soykaf that I just know is going to be bad or piss me off in some manner. I was never one to buy games on release day to begin with, but the games industry at this time has basically completely lost my confidence as a consumer. I feel like I am missing very little with this attitude. Despite my decades of hardcore vidyan, there are still large amounts of excellent old games that I still haven't played or mastered.
Joe Bloggs · 2022-11-25 14:33
https://www.myabandonware.com/browse/recent/ This site is full of pure gold, need i say more? The old games have actual gameplay and action, something you rarely find among todays games. On the other hand it can be an absolute bitch getting old games to run, the best thing is if you can find modern ports of old games with some hidef and gameplay patches.
Zero Cool · 2022-11-25 18:21
The one thing I do feel a little bit guilty about is that occasionally modern game developers do some kind of game directly in the style of past games, and they do it well, and I don't realize it happened until years later. Then I feel kind of guilty that I wasn't able to reward their efforts when it mattered. Pics related.
William Holtzer · 2022-12-08 04:30
Old games are simple and mostly (though not always) one very important thing: finished, functioning products. Many new games aren't even being sold as functional products, but completely broken messes that don't work out of the box with a false promise that they'll be fixed later on because they're "services". In literally any non-computing related industry this would be an unacceptable practice, yet it's been normalized in gaming and the rest of the tech world. Yes, I am aware that it's a pain in the ass to get most old games and other software working on modern platforms, but it's not impossible. Today we all the hindsight, foresight, cross-platform support and backwards compatibility in the world, yet new software is releasing more broken than ever.
Koos van der Merwe · 2022-12-09 06:54
>>6488 So FMV games are peak graphics then?
Unknown · 2022-12-10 00:47
>>6500 No, but they were kino that's for sure. Plumber's Don't Wear Ties is a personal favorite of mine.
Molly Millions · 2022-12-10 04:06
>>6465 Well, it's not as if graphics are everything anon. I play older games because game mechanics back then were more diverse, we had more genres, a greater willingness to experiment, and titles that were artistically challenging while not compromising on gameplay. Look at Silent Hill 2 or Metal Gear Solid, these are titles that are unique and won't ever be replicated again there isn't anything being released today that you can compare them to. I'm not saying older games are always objectively better, but that each game is an individual work of art and good art can't be repeated. It seems todays devs are less and less interested in artistry and more in making a quick buck. A lot of games today feel the same, there's a lot of hand holding, set piece cutscences with game in between, with narratives that have polished voice acting and visuals but aren't all that interesting or mildly thought provoking. Old games are also cheap and available, I don't have to fork out 50 bucks per title only to learn I need to buy the rest of the game through DLC packages and in game purchases, I just get the game and stick it in the console and, if your using an emulator, retro gaming is practically free meaning you can play and endless list of awesome classics without having to risk forking out a lot of money on a new game which turns out to be a flop.
Miho Iwakura · 2022-12-15 18:51
The X-COM Files is an absolutely amazing mod pack for the old game. >Play modern popular video games only! you're fuarrrkin trolling
Dujour · 2023-05-27 16:04
>>6966 I feel pretty similar. I play as many games as I ever did, but they're almost always old games or newer 2D games that have rejected the pretensions of the graphics whoring/cinematic arms race. It is extremely rare for a modern game to give me the same feeling of satisfaction I get from mastering old arcade games.
Hououin Kyouma · 2023-05-27 19:05
>>6971 Pinball tables are awesome tho.
Henry Case · 2023-05-29 09:58
I play almost exclusively old games other than multiplayer ones. They are worth playing. There are rare gems you find that you don't see anyone know anything about. This helps if you enjoy JRPGs or Platformers. I haven't begun playing PSX, but I love the older systems past Atari. I never understood why older generations love Atari arcade style games that have no depth at all. Arcade and the Family Computer are great systems. Same as the Sega Mark III. >>6972 I love them too.
nuarisu · 2024-04-13 16:45
I'm thinking on getting a handheld chinese console for playing retro games, in this case, the Myoo Mini Plus. I think it runs up to some PS1 games. What are some retro hidden gems I could try? Nothing obvious like "Chrono Trigger" or "Pokemon", please - though rom hacks, homebrews, or ports are definitely welcome.
Lord Nikon · 2024-05-26 11:44
obviously. things don't simply stop being good because an arbitrary number of solar or lunar rotations happen.
Eldon Tyrell · 2024-05-26 11:55
>>7749 An astronomer would correct you and say they're "revolutions" around the solar center, not rotations. But I won't because it's possible space don't real and is actually some sort of as above so below manifestation or as within so without psychological allegory about the cyclical nature of life and human development.
Spooky · 2024-06-28 03:59
Depends on the game, versus fighting games are still fun as you're playing against a person. The whole challenge and enjoyment is another player of equal skill.
Jane Doe · 2024-06-28 14:56
>>6465 Obligatory know this is fake but anyhow; Chrono Trigger is in the top 30 paid RPGs on the ipad store. I know that's kind of a doofy metric but obviously it means something. The graphics in chrono trigger were dated and retro when it was released, the same year as the playstation.
BloodCat · 2024-06-29 11:07
Get worthwhile cheap easy to pirate consoles like PS2, NDS, XBOX360 and Wii. Don't bother with GBA, GC or PSX they are overrated and overpriced pieces of crap that are obsoleted by the above.
J.C. Denton · 2024-07-02 05:09
Take a retro game; update graphics and add some quality-of-life changes. Now you can sell the remake!
John Titor · 2024-07-02 17:11
>>7859 to be honest dude the RE Remakes are literally whole new games, SF is not a remake but a sequel so that doesnt count the thing you hate arent remakes, when you update the graphics and add quality of life changes is a remaster, not a remake
Just another Random Lainon · 2024-07-02 19:20
>>7867 You have a strange notion of what a remake is. "Remastering" implies access to original material that wasn't in the first publication of something, usually because the quality had to be reduced for mass distribution on a compressed format. If you're fundamentally redoing the graphics I would not consider it a "remaster", that's simply a remake.
Jet Black · 2024-07-02 19:35
>>7869 but if you're just enhancing the graphics without altering the storytelling, gameplay, mechanics or plot, is it a remake ? A remake movie doesn't even use the same script, a retold story starts with a blank page. This is its own thing, an in between realm not really possible except in live rendered media. Its like a reimagining of a novel, same text but a new shared reader hallucination. Peculiar. Freespace2 calls it an upgrade and I think that's fair.
Unidentified · 2025-04-18 19:52
>>6465 Of course they are, OP. Why wouldn't they be?
Batou · 2025-04-20 06:59
I played Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on Wii for the first time in over 10 years last night. For thd first time in my life I ended up thinking >wow this aged terribly The visuals on LCD are so clear and sharp it's really jarring how bad this title looks (even by PS2/GCN standards) and the controls are so damn sluggish and stiff. I also played Mario Galaxy for a bit. The tutorial is 10 times harder than anything in Astrobot's first world. We've really come a long way... turning games so casual they're not worth playing anymore
Agent Richard Gill · 2025-04-20 10:40
I play older games because they tend to respect my intelligence, graphics are far from the most important thing in a game.
Mix · 2025-05-05 00:03
>>6465 Are old books worth reading? Are old movies worth watching? Are old songs worth listening to? Are old paintings worth looking at? Media, art, and information have no expiration date. The context of their existence and your very own point of view may change, but interaction with all these things will never be not worth it. Also, curiously, I suppose your name is inspired by Enderman from Minecraft? Game that had its first public release almost 16 years ago. Isn't it "too old" to bother with it? When exactly is "too old"?
Dox · 2025-05-05 04:35
this is a bait thread. >>8542 names here are random, but if i had to guess "Ender" is much more likely a reference to 'Ender's Game' sage for off topic
The Fin · 2025-08-28 10:07
Yes. They are objectively superior to everything that dropped in the past 15-20 years. Next question.
HELIOS · 2025-09-04 15:14
>>6465 I like them because they're often shorter and less bloated, and that often meant they had to be harder so players wouldn't beat them too quickly, which makes them more about getting good at a short burst through repetition and learning, which to me is genuinely intuitive and satisfying to see yourself getting better, after a few attempts pulling off a perfect 30 stretch to win. It's just better for me as a busy adult really, it's nice... also it used to be less gay than nowadays, women were sexy and all.

>>8813 I'm so excited for this, gave the NES/Master System and Game Boy titles a shot recently, and actually liked them despite their mediocrity, the only ones I couldn't get into were the SNES/Genesis titles, those were just awful. I hope this title is finally the T2 video game we deserve, and wanted to have back then, even if I do have a soft spot for the 8-Bit ones. I hope they make a T3 title eventually too, though the GBA one was good fun for what it was I think.
