Why does SuperTuxKart make people so angry?

Yamaoto Toshi · 2022-07-27 10:54
Why does SuperTuxKart make people so angry? Almost every time it gets mentioned on an imageboard, one (occasionally two) people get really aggressively mad about how the game is apparently horrible and trash and worse than Garfield Kart and unenjoyable. No-one even has to praise the game to unleash this rage. Context aside, it's a fun cute game.

it's low effort (because GPL is often incompatible with the market economy and consumer behavior; programmers and artists need to pay their bills) and lacks direction and cohesion
Chris Sawyer · 2022-07-27 22:36
>because GPL is often incompatible with the market economy and consumer behavior What does that even mean, 'often incompatible'? The license is completely compatible with a market economy and consumer behaviour. Are its players not consumers in market economies? Are its devs not producers within market economies? Are you implying that software must be made for profit to be 'compatible with consumer behavior'? Are you implying GPL isn't compatible with a sustainable for-profit business model? (Of course software that isn't being worked on by employed professionals is likely to have less time put in, I'm not disputing the 'low effort' point; I'm disputing the part I quoted.) >it's low effort and lacks direction and cohesion Back to the original question, why does that make people angry?

>>6156 We lash out because it promises a relief to a pain that will not go away- that of our dis-unified and perfidious nature. We've all taken advantage of others, and we know we’ll be hurt soon enough. There's a part of our spirit which is awoken by a project like super tux cart and cries out to help others and not be so lonely anymore, triggering us to remember all the times we contributed and had our faces spat on. We know in our souls we ought to be playing and building it, but we know in our minds this relief can never come, and to crush the thought- and those who bring it back anew.

I dunno but it's absolutely hilarious.

>>6159 >The license is completely compatible with a market economy and consumer behaviour. Holy soykaf. >Are you implying GPL isn't compatible with a sustainable for-profit business model? Not them, but yes. The handful of counter examples you have ready to pull out at any time don't disprove this. If people can easily get something for free, they're less likely to pay for it. Wow, what a revelation. If I couldn't, or didn't know how to pirate movies and games, I'd probably spend more money on those things.

This is the first time I've heard of people getting mad over SuperTuxKart, but I can sort of assume why people wouldn't like it. It probably gives off the impression of being a Wii shovelware game to a lot of people with the low quality assets it uses. I personally think the Freedoom games are more fun than the original Doom games, but I've seen so many people dismiss Freedoom because of how weird the enemies look.

>>6158 >it's low effort (because GPL is often incompatible with the market economy and consumer behavior; programmers and artists need to pay their bills) and lacks direction and cohesion Lmao, you're like the users that tried to claim that security trough obscurity didn't work for opensource projects, yet linux is a prime example of opensource security trough obscurity., and if you're still not convinced ask yourself "when was the last time I got a virus on linux". >>6161 Imagine being trigerred by a cute project someone wrote to practice programming, couldn't be me, lmao.
Lain Iwakura · 2022-08-06 20:16
>>6182 > yet linux is a prime example of opensource security trough obscurity what? the whole source code is in the open and there are thousands of people looking at every change, how is linux an example of security through obscurity?
Donna Hawthorne · 2022-08-06 20:47
>>6185 Not the anon you're replying to, but I guess he meant the large amount of code.
J.C. Denton · 2022-08-06 23:29
>>6186 >>6185 not that lain either, but I interpreted it as linux having relatively low occurrences of malware due to having low market share is an example of security by obscurity. Whether that or the large code base argument is the intent, it's a very poor argument that intentionally misinterprets the definition of security by obscurity. >Almost every time it gets mentioned on an imageboard, one (occasionally two) people get really aggressively mad about how the game is apparently horrible and trash and worse than Garfield Kart and unenjoyable. No-one even has to praise the game to unleash this rage. it's part of some imageboard culture (4chan) to aggressively insult inconsequential things, either to be funny or to troll people. Don't take it seriously.

>>6182 >linux is a prime example of opensource security trough obscurity Obscurity in that context doesn't mean "not enough incentive because not enough people use it".
Technician · 2022-08-09 17:36
>>6156 Never heard of anybody getting mad about STK. It's an okay game, although the Pidgin/Wilbur meta completely kills any enjoyment in regards to multiplayer.

>>6198 >although the Pidgin/Wilbur meta completely kills any enjoyment in regards to multiplayer. What are you referring to here...
Void · 2022-08-22 18:44
>>6185 >>6186 I meant less people use it, thus their're less malware purely because you wouldn't want to get that one guy that had a very specific setup. >what? the whole source code is in the open and there are thousands of people looking at every change Well, that would mean even more security, since pentesters would have gone trough and patched most exploits, and by the time someone even thinked about makeing malware for linux, they would already be "defeated". >>6187 >it's a very poor argument that intentionally misinterprets the definition of security by obscurity. Well not really, just because i ignored the exact context dosen't mean my "security trough obscurity" argument isn't valid >>6197 >context Well, yea, i thrown away the context becasue i didn't care about it, its a definition of Obscurity, and my argument stands.
Masami Eiri · 2022-08-23 17:59
>>6217 What argument? The person you were replying to said super tux kart is low effort because licensing your work under the GPL isn't profitable. There a numerous things wrong with that argument, but your response was "lmao, <unrelated whining about other people's thoughts on a different topic>" where the crux of your issue with the unrelated topic is just you smugly misusing a common phrase.

>>6156 Because all kart games suck, and STK is so average that nobody can see why they should play it, its only boon is foss mascots

idk its pretty fun but not as good as sonic robo blast 2 kart.
