I've had a N3DS XL for years. It's really nice to load up with roms, and homebrewing has gotten really easy over the years. Been playing FFVII on it recently.

I've had a DSi for many years and installed TWiLight Menu++ a year or two ago (haven't updated it since then and don't care to), just to play some rom hacks.

I remember wanting a 3DS many years ago but never got one. I don't think it's worth it anymore. Back then I thought I had to have the newest and shiniest gaming consoles but nowadays i'm fine with anything before 2005.

Game consoles aren't even worth buying anymore. Just emulate everything on your computer or even your phone if you use one.

Unironically the Sega Saturn.

I agree with you, but only for the 5 first console generations. Even now, 32/64bit console emulation is kind of hit or miss. The Dolphin emulator does a near flawless job at emulating the gamecube, while PS2's PCSX2 is a huge mess. Even with N64 I prefer real hardware.

fuarrrking amazing mecha game which recently got a fuarrrking amazing english localization with voice acting and twin stick support. I can't suck this game's dick enough. It's a masterpiece.
But no mainline Sonic though. So you're right, it's a pretty soykaf console.

Emulation is illegal and you can go to jail for it. I have several friends who downloaded one ROM off the internet and they got fined over $100,000 and faced 10 years in prison. It's a serious issue.

the PlayStation 2 is the best console you could ever buy, has well know gems and hidden gems, this console belongs to the last generation without DLC. also you have backwards compatibility with PlayStation 1 and you can play games without buying discs with modified memory cards.

Greetings Lain!
My best friend is a dedicated game collector of all systems. He's got shelves brimming with games like a library, including several arcade cabinets. Before I moved from the country, he gave me an original Playstation because nearly every time I'd visit I usually asked to play Tekken 2. We grew up in the 90's.
As a kid, I didn't obtain a system of my own but when my older brothers briefly had a PSX I played Tekken 2 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater alot. As a teenager I didn't pay much attention to games because I could visit my buddies to play.
My friend and I knew we'd miss each other very much. After he bought an Xstation from a contact he has via social media for a couple hundred bucks, he was confident to give me his ol' pride n' joy and a selection of his dearest games. Someday he'll visit me for a change, and when he does we're going to smoke a ton of weed, gobble mangoes & Japanese food, and dive into gaming like there's no tomorrow.
I was surprised to receive his gift. He guards his collection like Smaug does the dwarven treasure. I swore to compile a respectable collection so I'll enjoy gaming for years to come.
I scoured the net through ebay and similar sites for used games, usually disc only, knowing many have in-game tutorials anyway. Most had evident signs of previous use. No matter! Because folks at the local video-game resale store would polish the discs like brand new for a couple dollars each. I had all my Playstation games refinished. Its fantastic to pop a CD into the console and get straight into the game.
Indeed, the latest and greatest look like feature-films and are ultra interactive. I'm comfortable being conscious that I'm indulging a charming fantasy whenever I play. At this moment, the original Playstation is barely among the ranks of vintage consoles. So Lain, several of the games already listed here are being sold for hundreds of dollars each. Like my buddy, most collectors refuse to remove these increasingly rare games from their exalted mantlepieces.
A "like-new" Ps1 console complete with cables and a dual-shock controller is obtainable from a good shop for fifty dollars or less. If you decide to go the Ps2 route, even Ps3, you can potentially play. . . up to 10,000 games. You could grab a mystery box of 10 miscellaneous games and you're guaranteed to get several interesting ones.
Lately I've been into the following:
Ghost in the Shell
Ape Escape
Harvest Moon - Back to Nature
& last but definitely not least Final Fantasy IV from Squaresoft's "Chronicles" re-release including none other than Chrono Trigger for a whopping two legendary Super Nintendo games in one case. Awesome. I never played attention RPGs before but I'm so glad I got this. I totally get it now. These games are TIGHT.
Ahh! Music to my ears. That intro will never get old. You're the best, buddy.

Big fan of the 3ds. Have an O3DS and N3DS myself and the homebrew community did such a good job at breaking the consoles apart that you can do alot on it very easily.
Especially love making themes for it. Wish the Switch had themes too. (thankfully Homebrew brings "themes" back on the switch, tho.)

The Ayn Odin is a pretty awesome emulation device that is worth considering. Android based with good QoL improvements, can emulate most PS2/GC, great build quality and feature set, amazing battery life, and dock with video out. You can even throw Windows on it and run AAA circa-2012 equivalent demand games, making the majority of current indie PC games viable. Depending on model it's between $200-$300.

Truthfully, I can't think of any badly emulated non-legacy systems except XBox and maybe PS2.
>there's no point in collecting games
Depends on who you ask. It's like collecting music. Most people, if you ask them - will say that it's a waste of money now that it's more available than ever with streaming and whatnot.
...Is what I would say if scalpers didn't ruin everything.
But if you grew up with those physical games and emulate them on a pc with entirely different controllers on a desktop monitor years later, you will feel the difference. Of course, you can buy a gamepad adapter and hook your machine to your Tv - and if that works for you, great.
Don't get me wrong, I still emulate games for the consoles which I do not own and got no attached emotion to. (Pre PS2)
Ok I'm done sperging.

The PSP is built like a brick. MGA 1+2, Danganronpa, Carnage Hearts EXA, can emulate a fair few older consoles. Battery life is fair but not perfect. That can be modded, though. Not very likely to get you robbed in public either - who wants a moldy old fuarrrking PSP? Not the kind of people interested in robbing you.

I never had a home console ever in my life, I only had handhelds, mom bought me a gba when I was 11 and a ds lite when i was 14, and arround that age i'd come over to my neighborhood friend that had a wii and come over to play their wii games with him and his brother. I always wanted to own a wii but never did so i will play games that i had missed in my childhood and hopefully will give me lots of nostalgia dopamine hits. :)

I hear you but I like handheld consoles because they are more comfortable to hold than cellphones. I like to sit in my bed on lazy days and game on an handheld console plus I travel a lot so handhelds are more practical. Also call me sentimental but the novelty of booting up a consol and launching a game is so satisfying. Better than launching an emulator imo.
Personally I have handhelds which I have homebrewed and then I use emulators on my computer for anything that is too advanced for my handhelds to run
Nanashi No Gombe · 2022-12-22 03:01
The PS Vita has the entire PSP and PS1 library (with a few mainstream PS2 games) behind it aswell as an active homebrew scene bringing over Android games among other stuff. The library is pretty okay if you enjoy PS games. Incredibly beautiful and sleek system to hold and I only imagine the homebrew scene getting better as time goes on. Get a 1000 model if you can, the OLED screen is worth it.
3DS (buy a new 3DS if you like homebrew) has a good library of comfy RPGs. Shin Megami Tensei, Bravely Default, and Monster Hunter come to mind.
Switch has a lot of good home console games ported over to it and can do fairly good emulation but it's less streamlined compared to other consoles. But any of those handheld PCs can do that and many times even emulate the switch itself.

Nemissa · 2022-12-25 12:40
Like a few people in this thread have already said, the PSvita is a great handheld once it has been hacked.
Every game from every region (including ps1 and psp games) is available at the press of a button in the pkg store, I have a 128gb sd card and have half filled it with games.
Homebrew is plentiful too, there's a built in psp emulator, custom themes and a really useful file manager called Vitashell that lets you ftp into it super easy.
Hacking and instillation of the custom firmware is a breeze too, providing your not thick in the head. There's a guide online and its likely to never be patched as the console is discontinued now.

>What are the best video game consoles, old or new, to buy in 2022?
I think right now the best you can get if price isnt an issue is either a steam deck or something like it, they're infinitely customizable and can emulate most of not all consoles.
Other then that its quite easy to get CFW working on a PS3, though its terrible at emulating DOS and you cant emulate Sega Saturn or Nintendo 64 but other than those you can fill up an external ssd with as many PSX, PS2 and PS3 games as you could ever hope to play, as well as all the stuff that retroarch can do on the platform.
ive even heard of people using their PS3's as Gnu Linux PCs but it doesnt seem to be quite there yet
Ive had a PS3 running EvilNat for a few years now and its been pretty great, only big issue is that good quality peripherals are becoming rarer by the day
(pic rel my stinky old ps3 running dosbox)

I can't help but have a soft spot for the Game Boy Micro.
I understand why people with large hands or imperfect eye sight may not like it, but to me the size was never an issue. Loved how small and light it was, and the screen looked great for GBA games; bright enough to be seen clearly, but not oversaturated like the IPS panels modders have started swapping into older GBA models. Not to mention the premium build quality compared to other Nintendo handhelds.
I enjoy the PSPgo for much the same reason. They're just two consoles that exemplify what it means to be a "handheld".

Strange, I've emulated games before and that never happens to me at all, I guess you live in a country where emulation/piracy is pretty much illegal, even if the company went bankrupt and no longer sells those games, it's still flat out illegal. Get an older fat model Playstation 2, get a HDD adapter and slap a hard drive in that sucker. You don't necessarily need a Free McBoot memory card since you can image the hard drive and have it boot FMCB from that. You can even use it to create your own FMCB memcard from there.
You can install and run games straight from the disk, use it for virtual memory cards, run some modded PS2 games (like Japanese audio undubs for example), add saves to your memory card, etc etc.
Get yourself a nice CRT with component or S-Video while you're at it.
