What are you playing Lain?

Nanashi No Gombe · 2022-01-08 23:38
As the title implies, a thread for sharing what you're currently playing/ just finished playing/planning to play next. Write a little review, post pros and cons, what you liked and disliked in comparison to other games, suggest the next title others should play etc. etc.

>>5665 As I made the thread I'll go first I just finished playing Medal of Honor for the PSX. You are Jimmy Patterson, late of the USAAF, now OSS, the year is 1944, the war in Europe is almost over, you do varying degrees of spooky soykaf behind German lines. >Pros One of the first of the WWII fps genre if not the first, a really well thought out game that made the best use of the hardware available at the time Understands some things that many later entries in the genre failed at, such as not giving the user unnecessary prompts, not making things overly dramatic or ridiculous, while not grinding the player's face into the dirt Really fun weapons with incredibly good sound fx, everything feels appropriately powerful, the BAR and the mounted MG in particular sound and feel incredible to use Just generally excellent visual and sound design for the era the game was made in, the music in particular is great Great enemy AI and hit reactions that put many newer games to shame, enemies duck onto grenades, kick them away, try and through them back, zig zag and shoot while trying to get close to you, run for cover, blindfire around corners, etc. Makes good use of the setting and history it has at its disposal to inform its missions, at the dawn of the genre this game has many more inventive scenarios that are more appropriate to the main character and their role than in many more copy paste WWII shooters Good environmental variety, from snow covered Norway to French Docks, factories, mines & inside a Uboat The fuarrrking music is outstanding >Cons Generally a bit too easy, when its not easy its because its being cheap, as detailed below The controls are pretty jank, this is an early 3d game and you can feel it, aiming can feel spot on or like you've drunk one too many medical canteens depending on literally nothing, it just feels off, randomly, for no reason a lot of the time Jimmy being a proud red blooded American is so fat that he can barely fit through doorways, getting stuck in tight passages or in door-frames is a common occurrence in this game and can get you killed on occasion. Despite the scenarios the game puts you in making good use of the history at its disposal the objectives are almost all variations of go here, pick up thing, shoot thing. The game lacks mechanical diversity between levels, although the short length of most levels and the arcadey nature of the game prevent this from being a massive problem The game gets a bit cheap towards the end, lacking any other way to make the game harder, it begins to throw lots and lots of troops with rocket launchers towards you which results in some cheap deaths that spoil the mood of what is otherwise a reasonably easy game right at the end. Hitboxes aren't the best, many times you'll have bullets blocked by a barrier extending a foot past the end of a corner you're shooting around when your enemy's bullets hit you fine. The PSX had no business rendering this game and it shows, your weapon randomly disappears at particularly hectic moments, the frame rate is all over the place in some sections and you'll be taking shots from beyond the abysmal draw distance quite a bit but over all it adds to the scuffed charm of a trail blazing game I give it 7.5/10, I would give its sequel/almost expansion pack MOH:Underground 9/10, with more varied objectives, more interesting environments, even better guns, even better music, and more angry french women committing war crimes

Recently played: >The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth: Really good and addicting, the early game is boring but when you start to unlock new characters and items the game becomes dynamic >Darkest Dungeon: Probably the best turn based mechanics I've ever seen, it's really wonderful when you realize how you can make a party that work together and fuarrrking destroy a boss >Shovel Knight: The base game felt boring to me, but the Plague Doctor DLC has won my heart, the characters are extremely charismatic and memorable, and it's really fun to discover new granade combo uses >Lisa The Pointless: I'm really fan of Lisa the Painful, but Lisa The Pointless didn't catch on me, the difficulty make the game boring and the game can't be as Dark or as Fun as Lisa The Painful >Jojo HFTF: The really downside is not having so many players like I wish but it's a surprisingly good fighting game >Fahrenheit Indigo Prophecy: Has some cool ideas, but the later game it's soykaf, the game also has a lot of boring minigames that removes your concentration on scenes that would be better if there was nothing, don't know why the devs made this decision, if you want to play choose easy mode it will make the game more enjoyable. >Euphoria: Still didn't managed to get the good ending, but as a horror game it's well done, it's really uncomfortable to watch the extremely long sex scenes with transmits well the feeling of repulsion, besides that I laughed when I found you can turn off the voice of every specific character I wish that was a thing on other games. >Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines: Masterpice with some flaws, but even the flaws are memorable, I like every character, the voices are amazing, and the plot is cool >S.T.A.L.K.E.R Good game too, I like how every moment of this game looks like you are fuarrrked up it brings the feeling of survival on you

>>5665 >Kerbal. Good autism engineering game, but the only goal is to "go there". I made a mining ship that give me as much fuel as I want and Now I am bored. The only good way to play is to use the robotic part to make things that are not rockets. >Bannerlord Loading screen and crashes generator, but so good when it work. Take that, snow barbarians, and forest barbarians, and sand barbarians, and grass barbarians. >Stellaris Another space autism game, but this time you spend hours comparing the pro and cons of 100 different factors for your space race and at the end it don't even matter because the AI is soykaf and almost all choices have minor consequences. >The long dark I don't like people. I don't like randomly dying after 500 days of survival and having finally set up things rights either. >Watchdog. The only good one: the first. This game is so old but it still so superior to modern games on many aspects. Just walking the streets, spying on people's personal life and preventing a crime here and there while not making a sound, leaving the world disrupted, apart for the hundreds of thousands you siphon from the banks... I want my life to be that, even if it cost me my girl. >Witcher 3 It take 20 mods to make it playable but now I can't stop playing it.

Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic A hybrid between a city builder and a transport tycoon. You're in charge of the planned economy of a soviet republic during the 70s, the objective is to make the country as much as possible independent from other countries. It requires a lot of micro managing and in the late game, it became a nightmare >pros More challenging than other city builders/transport tycoon games, even on easy mode Possibility to make you glorious republic completely independent from monetary currency (USD and RUB) by producing everything domestically Good music >cons clunky ui poor performance and frequents freezes poor graphics strange train signals building roads and rails with constructions offices take too much time (6 months to asphalt 800m of gravel road!) Transport Fever 2 Another transport tycoon game. It's very simplistic in its mechanics compared to other titles of the genre but it has very nice graphics >pros very good graphics good railways building system in mountain maps it's challenging to build railways >cons vehicle routing use only static lines road vehicles can't overtake other vehicles. Have fun watching motor vehicles stuck behind a horse drawn vehicle in the early XX century simplistic economy. Once learned the mechanics cash will flow in billions without problems Cities: Skylines The most popular city builder of the last decade probably. I use it mainly as a traffic manager game though. I just like to build complex motorways interchanges, roundabouts and thinkering with timed traffic lights (obvs pic not mine, I don't have the patient to put props and to use the road marking tools like that :P) OpenTDD The only non proprietary malware, free as in freedom game in this list. A libre isometric transport tycoon. I like it because of its ability to create complex lines with conditionals and signals. It supports AI opponents as well as multiplayer so you can experience the true capitalistic experience

I'm playing Jet Set Radio for the Dreamcast, and I'm looking forward to Yakuza for the PS2. >> Jet Set Radio The controls are a bit awkward to learn - par for the course as a Dreamcast title - but overall, it's a simple, fun game with a great soundtrack. >> Yakuza As I haven't played it yet, I can't give much of a review. I am hoping it's as good as the remakes that have come out in recent years. Yakuza 0 was a blast to play!

currently playing Gundam Battle Operation 2, it's a pretty good game that serves the fantasy of piloting the mechs everyone sees on Gundam. UC-only, thankfully. The gatcha elements are annoying though, and you can really only get the great suits through purchases. Still, putting something like 120 hours into it, and I have some good suits I've always liked. Fun game, 8/10

>>5665 >DCSS Extremely fun, i will never get tired of this roguelike; but i play an old version (0.16.2) because from that year (2016) until [Present_day+Present_time] 90% of what the devs did was remove content or nerf combos (race+god) that were already the hardest to play (making them effectively less played and less popular than before). >OpenArena I'm not really a fps dude, but i missed playing an online fps whose servers went down like a year ago, and the only other fps that worked for me was quake3, so the choice was easy, i went with the open source, improved version of quake 3, OpenArena. There's surprisingly a community that keeps playing this game daily and making tournaments! the controls and UI are soykaft, but this community plays with a mod (called "rat") that fix the math and UI of the game, making it very playable and fun. >Golden Sun I wanted to replay this GBA gem, but it's a bit of a hassle because to play it properly i have to hook up my crt to my pc and that takes me a while, so i may wait a while and see if i can emulate the game in my wii instead. The game is one of the best titles for the GBA, the combat is pretty fun and the story is interesting, and there's a lot of secrets and extras to be found. The art and music are both beautiful. Curiously, the combat has FF vibes and even though i never enjoyed FF combat, i really like it here.
Dox · 2022-01-09 23:09
>>5676 Why do you need a CRT to emulate a GBA game? The GBA used an (awful) TFT LCD, surely an LCD with a filter is more appropriate?

>>5665 I'm currently doing another playthrough of Hotline Miami and will move on to Hotline Miami 2 when I'm finished. It's hard to believe that both of these games are almost a decade old, but they are. I remember the first game coming out and taking the internet by storm. At its core, Hotline Miami is a top-down arcade shoot 'em up, but it marries that with an unmistakable sense of style that has allowed it to stand the test of time. It's two parts Drive and one part David Lynch, graphically violent with a generous helping of surrealism that makes you question what is real and what are merely the hallucinations of the ever-silent Jacket. Visually, the game has a colourful pixel art-style that does well to convey the neon-drenched decadence of its 1989 Miami setting. It also makes the gruesome violence seem more palpable and "video game-y", which I believe contributes to the game's message regarding violence in video games. On top of the visuals, you have the amazing soundtrack, which I'm sure introduced many people to synthwave, my favorite genre of music. Hell, the "Hotline Miami sound" of '80s inspired synth music may be more popular than the games themselves. Gameplay is fast and exhilarating, rewarding good timing and proper positioning, but it's somewhat let down by the inconsistent hit registration and the lengthy kill animations that open you up to an attack. However, the frustration I felt when those things would occur was dulled whenever I'd pull off a huge combo and make it through the level. The game is very good at holding your interest. All in all, I'd recommend Hotline Miami to anyone interested in its type of gameplay and aesthetics.

Kind of boring but over the past month I've just been playing this Pokemon Romhack called Unbound while working on my Masters. It uses a heavily customised version of the FireRed Engine, and is decently challenging for a lainon who's grown up playing the game. I've also been fuarrrking around with Bloodborne a lot, first time in a few years. Good distraction game.

>>5682 ++ For my own autistmo games lately am playing flightgear. Flightgear is a free flightsim game used in several FAA approved simulators. There is not too much game to it, but if you think the idea of flying airplanes around, doing checklists and fixing problems is fun, you might enjoy it. Also has some good scenary and topography, so its fun to fly over places you know and look around, though some are not very much to look at. Quite a few planes to fly; jet fighters and jet liners, cessnas and helicopters, sopwith camels and world war two bombers, some more and some less faithfully and completely. Recent flight of mine I took off in a prop plane I was unfamiliar with. Engine startup went fine, took off and was flying off for a few minutes trying to figure out the autopilot when I noticed I lost power, engine RPMs were way down. I tried restarting the engine but no luck. Apparently I didn't pack enough fuel for my trip, and without the engine running the landing gear didn't want to redeploy. Managed to perform an adequate emergency landing at a luckily positioned airstrip without power, but didn't figure out how to deploy the gear before I did it, so I probably screwed my plane. I think its a blast.

>>5665 Currently I am playing Atelier Ryza on Switch as well as Doom 64 from time to time. I recently completed Bloodstained Ritual of the Night along with the 8 bit spinoffs. I plan to play Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition next as well as recontinue Super Mario 3D World. I plan to get that 3D gameplay Kirby game when it gets released cause I have been wanting a 3D gameplay Kirby game since the N64 era. When I get a desktop PC to replace my dying 12 year old laptop, I plan to play my backlog of Steam and GOG titles as well as some PS1 emulated games that I could not finish or play cause my laptop started crapping itself. I also plan to get Elden Ring for it. Also, I have an original Xbox and plan to play Crimson Skies among a couple other games.

>7 days to die Actually good zombie survival, which is still being updated and played pretty actively. It makes basebuilding genuinely interesting by using voxels, and the UI is easy to use and the progression feels nice, regardless of skill path chosen. It does require a bit of knowledge which skills to pick, In order to progress fast, but in the end it just makes the game a little faster. >Fallout: New Vegas Thought I'll replay this one for the n-th time, now in pure vanilla. It's actually special this time: this is my first playthrough where I use energy weapons.

i was kinda retired of gaming, but i recently revived my 3DS with Homebrew and im currently playing: >>Shin Megami Tensei IV the graphics are very good for being in 3ds, despite the battles being in 2d (thing that i personally really like), the gameplay is like pokemon but with 10 more levels of difficulty, and the story is the best story that a Shin Megami game has ever have. if you have a 3DS, this game is a must play. >>Mother 3 the music is pretty good, the art style is good too and the story is good, everyone must play and experience this game.

not sure if this thread is only for vidya, but I've been playing Final Fantasy RPG 4th Edition on a virtual tabletop as the Game Master for some weeks now. It's got some fun ideas like the Destiny Points system but the combat is a little lacking. It feels like a direct imitation of the videogame combat, which some may like, but I personally prefer more narrative leniency in my combat systems. as for vidya, I've been on and off playing .flow for a while now, I find it great fun, specially since this my first time playing it. I loved Yume Nikki and Yume2kki so the games it inspired are no brainers for me.

I recently finished Iconoclasts. It's a 2D sprite-based Metroidvania. I got sucked into playing it just based off its beautiful sprites alone. I had to trudge through it at times but then the story picks up halfway through the game and I was left wanting to know what happens next. The puzzles were entertaining at times, always felt good to crack them.

I managed to find COD Ghosts and play for the first time ever on ps5. It handles tons of chaotic things all going off at 60fps. This and MW2 and 2 are good ways to see the ps5 running really nicely. They are technically very well built games. I doubt I will give a soykaf about the story tho. Im quite normal person in my game tastes. Its probably the most mainstream thing out of my likes. I grew up in the 80s so have played all the obscure retro games growing up and prefer the new ones for single player. Old 2player games were the best tho. Alien Breed or Mario Cart being of the best ones. I do like GTA5 online though and will get back into it tmr now the ps5 upgrade is here. Dirt 5 is a really good racing game on the ps5 aswell btw. Its great to race in the morning to wake you up. That's the only time I play it really.

STALKER is great if you find the right modset, I used to play Call of Chernobyl which combines all 3 games and makes it more freeplay friendly, but recently I've been getting into modding Anomaly, which uses a new engine. Tried some light modding and it was fun, but I've been playing Escape from Pripyat which lets you do a lot of fun stuff For multiplayer FPS games, I have been playing insurgency for quite some time now, the original has much better movement and gunplay in my opinion, and the servers are still somewhat active despite being made in 2014 Squad is also great, it strikes a good enough balance between teamwork, individual play, and medium paced gameplay. Not quite Arma in terms of coordination as there is no longer planning phase which is something I'd like to see more of, but the entry level is much lower in terms of being in the community, and you get to meet very interesting people Also, EU4 got an update which I'm not to happy with since they removed some very useful exploits like selling crown titles and infinite Burgher loans, but it's not the end of the world. Colonial Finland game in the making and it's very fun >>5671 >KSP I'll need to get back into that, put a good few hundred hours into that back in 2018 but it sounds more and more like my kind of game now >Stellaris Also great game, but yeah, AI is extremely retarded and after overcoming early game you just roll over your opponents with tech rush, but the meta might have changed Still holds a place near and dear to my heart since it's the only Paradox game with random starts rather than starting on a predetermined political field. the LARP factor is also nice since the customization is extensive, always liked inward perfection and minmaxxing the soykaf out of my empire >The long dark Have had that game on the backburner for a while, tried a few hours but failed. I'll give it another shot though, good survival games are few and far between nowadays

Horizon Forbidden West despite the silly human animations, it's really fun and much more complex than the first game. So far only around 25% in but am having a blast. Finished Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I've always loved Metroidvanias but I had never touched any of the related Castlevania games. It's surprisingly good, though I felt like it lacked nuance, very much a regular JRPG type of deal where every new item you find is better than anything you had before that, very little incentive to mix and match or fiddle around with the gimmicks the game has to offer. This includes the spell system, I went through the entire game melee-only, though I guess if I had a better controller I could've actually used them. Item hunting can be a bit of a pain, as their locations aren't that memorable and I would flounder about for a fair bit before I'd remember to check out that one place from before or pore over the map in search of a single unexplored room. The Reverse Castle marks a sudden difficulty spike, but becomes much more manageable once you find items that boost your defence. Despite that you still feel like you're treading on eggshells the entire time until you get all of Alucard's initial items. Dracula is a bit of a pushover. Overall it's a fun little game you can check out just for the exploration that it offers, along with a few interesting boss fights and rooms scattered here and there. Though it's offtopic, can anyone recommend any good controllers? All I've got is my broken Dualshock 2 and a simple gamepad without analog sticks.

I'm currently on a FromSoft kick. I played Soulsborne games on and off through the years but I never really got into them, until Elden Ring. I got 30 hours in when I realized that I can actually be good at these games and I got head first into Bloodborne. I ended up beating it and in love with it. It may be, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best designed games ever. What an incredible piece of craft. It's unbelievable how the game drives you to just have fun. I'm currently going through Dark Souls and the game feels like a slog compared to Bloodborne. I have no idea why so many people regard it as a masterpiece when it has so many flaws. It's a fun game, it's good, I'm not saying it's bad. But it's a 7/10, at most. >inb4 git gud I'm fighting the couple boss at anor londo right now, I plan to play the game to completition like how I did with Bloodborne, but you can tell that the devs really needed to experiment more and get feedback on their games. Also I got around to playing Kings Field and it's so fun I love it so much. I wish they'd make a remake that was less clunky tho. But it's top fuarrrking notch.

I just beat silent hill origins. I like it more than most people seem to. it's definitely not as good as the team silent games, but I remember there was talk of a silent hill game that silent hill 3 replaced and they did 3 instead for fanservice of lore. this is that to a hyper extent. it's not trying to be like the other silent hill games, it's trying to tick all the boxes while having its own style and expand on lore, which isn't what team silent seemed to have loved about the series. there is much less reason to run in this game. you can take a lot of enemies down with your bear fists. there's a bunch of weird weapons too like toasters and tvs and they break. and the monsters who you can't meelee to death are slow as fuarrrk. but if you like the lore and aestetic it's a good one to play after the originals. and the puzzles are pretty good and silent hill ish too.

Lately I had been thinking that I don't enjoy FPS games anymore, but Post Void has proved me wrong. The way it assaults my vision with its abstract and insane visuals. its blood-pumping soundtrack that you just can't get enough of, its extremely replayable gameplay. It's the best FPS I've played in years. The story is enjoyable too, despite the fact that it's limited to the intro poem and the short ending cutscene. I've finished it 4 times already and I doubt that I'm going to stop playing it anytime soon. 10/10.
Delilah · 2022-05-14 11:07
>>5976 It sounds like you probably would enjoy Nightmare Reaper based off of everything but the visuals. Visuals-wise Cruelty Squad would be closest to Post Void. And Reelism 2 if you just want to check out a bonkers Doom mod. As for what I'm playing? Not a damn thing, since I hit Ferron Keep (giant swamp area) on a first playthrough of Dark Souls 3 and that soykaf is devastatingly hard, and was already starting to get burnout after Elden Ring and a DS1 replay. As well as getting distracted with building a comprehensive manga library with FMD2 as well as reading a couple like Ajin and Tomodachi Game.

Currently playing the Lain PS1 game, cant be thankful enough for people who made it playable in a browser. It runs almost seamlessly, and when some bugs or stutters happen, they are not serious and actually add to the atmosphere. The game does not follow the story of anime, there are no characters from the anime, except the Lain herself. Although it is still a Lain story. Havent finished it yet, although I have spoiled it a little for myself, be careful when clicking on any wiki about this game, because it gets spoilery very quickly. >Pros The game delves much deeper into actual psyche of Lain. It actually feels like a 12 year old child going to therapy, and you see the slow, sad decline of the childs mental health. It adds a lot to the anime. The voice acting is amazing. Atmosphere is also amazing. Whenever some character is in decline, you can hear audio glitches and creepy background voices. >Cons The game is kinda boring. I actually like it, and there were times, when I couldnt tear away from it, but not many people would like it, because its just basically listening to various audio files and piecing a story together. Also, the controls are little clunky and unresponsive, but it was that way on PS version too.

I picked up Noita like a week or two ago and haven't put it down since. It's nice learning new strategies and finding new tools to help me get further in the game, but a lot of the advice I see tells me "dude just get this perk and these spells and put it on this type of wand" as if there wasn't an RNG deciding what you even get to use. Also not a fan of how much of a pain in the dick it is to heal, but maybe that's just a sign to gitgud. I'm thinking of installing some mods so I don't have to reroll 20 times for a decent explosive wand (aka anything but Bomb) every time I die.

recently finished a normal 1cc of Danmakai: Red Forbidden Fruit and been playing Grief Syndrome. Danmakai is a bullet hell with the sensibilities of a PC-98 2hu game. the english translation is charmingly bad. it is a mostly well-designed but a pretty generic example of the genre, it doesn't stand out much to me outside of having some pretty pixel art and cute characters. bullet visibility isn't always perfect... anyway if you like it, go play Touhou; if you've already played Touhou, go play Len'en or start sifting through fangames (i recommend Hollow Song of Birds). Grief Syndrome is a beat-em-up with Madoka characters, by Twilight Frontier, same ppl who did the Touhou fighting games (and Eternal Fighter Zero... my beloved). been playing singleplayer but it can take up to five, and online play is possible. all i can say so far is that Mami has been really fun to play. i'd be open to some beat-em-up game recommendations.

Decided to go on a metroidvania Castlevania binge. Finished Order of Ecclesia, Aria of Sorrow and tried Harmony of Dissonance, in that order. OoE looks and sounds nice courtesy of the NDS, but in terms of gameplay it's very different. I'm not a fan of separate stages, a bunch of them reuse assets and entire room layouts and feel like cheap filler, while the castle feels linear and contrived in its obstacles, probably because you've got most of them by the time you get there and there really isn't much room to experiment with clever and organic roadblocks. OoE is rather heavy on the grind, which also applies to the quest system that ends up feeling like ticking off boxes by late game. There is one very interesting mechanic where you can steal enemies' spells as they're casting them, including the bosses, but it's not often that you can get to use that. Unlike the other Castlevanias I've tried, OoE made me consider the items and spells I use for each situation and enemy, since there are different types of attacks and elements which are more or less effective against certain types of enemies. The bosses are really tough, their patterns usually vary and they hit hard. Dracula can walk now. Overall, it's alright, but I really wish it was less about the grind. AoS is the one I liked the most out of the three, the castle was fun to navigate around and I like the simple but varied soul system better than OoE's glyphs. AoS is generally simpler, no quests, no mixing and matching your items, it's straightforward and fun nonetheless. For a GBA game, it's very nice artistically, especially compared to... Harmony of Dissonance. I couldn't get into it primarily because of the visuals. It's genuinely painful to look at. Apparently the developers wanted to focus on the visuals, and so the environment is super detailed, but once you've got too many detailed things on the screen it turns into eye strain. I particularly dislike the main character's sprite, it's poorly scaled, the animations are stiff, the afterimage effect is unnecessary clutter, and the design is plain goofy, I can't shake off the feeling Juste has got clown shoes on. I like the inclusion of dash/backdash that you can just consecutively use, but that's pretty much it about the gameplay department since I didn't get too far. HoD soundtrack gets a lot of flak, but I like its lack of samples and the way it relies on just the music chip, reminds me of Gameboy.
Debbie Charteris · 2022-05-16 21:20
>>5984 Harmony of Dissonance is easily the worst of all the Metroidvanias. The primary reason for the vast majority of its shortcomings is that it couldn't get Symphony of the Night's dick out of its mouth.

I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It's alright. The combat system is solid and the world is rather pretty and interesting to explore. The game kinda reminds me Assassin's Creed Odyssey in the way it's bursting with features and systems that you can interact with or just ignore. It's neat. What brings the game down is a terminal case of anime writing. I just want the game to shut up and let me explore its world and break/topple/launch/smash mobs. Resident Evil Code Veronica. The black sheep of the original series. Gameplay is pretty solid but doesn't add anything new from the PS1 games. The story on the other hand is a total mess. >>6224 So I've been playing this game a little bit more and turns out the obnoxious anime nonsense is contained within the main quest which is like 5% of the the game, possibly less. The rest operates on this wholesome cartoon logic and you don't even have to play as the main character Shōnen protagonist (not that there's anything wrong with him, he's fairly likeable) you don't even have to have him nor his bipolar girlfriend in the party. So my party currently consists of an aggressively Welsh cat girl, her actual cat and a scholar lady with a hole in her chest. Then you have this wrestler lad and his chick and a corpulent ball of fur with his waifu androids. When the idle animations kick in half of the party is performing synchronized warm ups and the other half is dancing. Among the characters I have unlocked there's a femboy cross-dresser (no, seriously, his name's Floren) an honest to god furry, not one but two bird mutant things, a lass lounging in a floating bathtub, little girl with her polar bear, a ball thing, two mechas and a mall goth. Most of them are also completely insane, the main characters are aware and mostly coping. Right, so I'm doing side quests, exploring, leveling my dudes and so on and it's fun, it's great until I feel like moving the main story forward. Cutscene starts and it's just this 90s anime vomit with edgy space samurai and boring elementary school surface level musings on existentialism and nihilism. And then the custscene ends and my overpowered band of mutants and circus freaks just obliterate whatever stands in front of them. Like it's supposed to be this tense boss battle but my bird thing is throwing a hammer at the bad guy ninja and falling on her face in the process and the femboy is dancing with flowers and stuff while the cat girl is cheering him on with her own dance routine. I can't even call it a tonal whiplash, the game isn't even aware of the very concept of tone. It's like some old dude wrote the main story and then a completely different people made the actual game and they didn't even read the script, they didn't care. Yeah, I love this game, it's great, highly recommended.

Since I hate video games I was suprised what big of a Mega Man fan I've become - it's the only series of video games I trully enjoy. After I beated AirMan.EXE I haven't played the game for about 2 - 3 weeks, I'll go back to it when I have time since I'm busy with real-life stuff. >>5665 I've been playing Ultrakill since a while after it's second act released and i just found it absolutely top tier. It ruined just about every other singleplayer shooter and some of its bossfights like V2 and Minos Prime just mog almost everything in character action games >very great guns, all of which are overpowered with tons of combinations and synergies, doing cool stuff and comboing the mechanics together feels not only satisfying but actually potent and useful >no superfluous stuff, all tools are good and worth mastering (except the alternate version of the coin pistol), combos are all useful >no press x to cool or QTE soykaf >unlimited ammo >excelent healing mechanic, encouraging agression rather than pussying out despite the relatively high damage of the enemies >each gun works effectively against nearly any enemy effectively and despite them each feels uniquely useful >barely has ''rock paper scissors'' things like cacodemon grenade >excelent ost (dont mind whatever the fuarrrk they decided to put on the trailer, that track works okay in cybergrind at least, that track wasnt even made by the composer of the other tracks) >game isnt even complete and it already feels like it qualifies as a full enough game >developer actually balances things in a fun manner, i have yet to see a single anti-fun change >wave survival gamemode that gets increasingly harder that encourages you to pull off the full extent of the game's mechanics to survive for as long as possible, which pairs well with the game's huge skill ceiling >excelent theme and cool art overall, pretty interesting plot it has a few cons though >some may find the even first playthrough too easy, '' Violent difficulty '' is more like '' Standard difficulty except better '' and the actual hardmodes have not been implemented yet, and the third act not released also worsens that problem >because of the above, replaying early levels may feel like a snoozefest, specially if you're used to Cybergrind >getting good or knowledgeable with the guns on replays lets you melt bosses in seconds, which is honestly more fun in Ultrakill than in most games where this issue happens but its still a turnoff >in the end, the only things you have for high difficulty at the moment is Cybergrind and maaybe the first '' Prime '' superboss, gotta wait until the harder difficulties and the other prime bosses are added (though hopefuly act 3 ramps up the difficulty too) >very popular game with lots of young players, so its online communities in mainstream places are mostly very childish, lots of soykafty memes

Clever idea but the core of the game is not worth the repetitions and the gorgeous art can't cover a meh story Playing Disco Elysium now, the writing definitely deserved the praise at some points and even if some of the decisions don't really work for me I can see there's an attempt to offer something different

>>6314 >>6315 >>6319 You guys were right, I took a little break and came back to games and have been having fun since. Guess I was just going through a bit of a low mood for some reason Just finished Ion Fury >Pretty good overall, 7/10 >If you haven't played Blood you should just play that instead, then maybe come back to this after you play Blood + Deathwish for Blood Pros >Great moment to moment game play >Extremely satisfying core mechanics and weapons >Main roster of enemies is good >Looks and plays great, technical love letter to the build engine >Probably best shotgun in any video game I've ever played >Level design is very engaging Cons >Hope you like industrial cityscapes, sewers and techbase type environments because this game absolutely adores them, very little environmental variety >Core roster of enemies is good but some of the more special enemies are pretty mid, and aren't utilized all that well after their debut. >Weapons are good but the power weapons are a bit boring, the power weapon is basically a rifle, there's no zany weapons like the other build engine games have, especially thinking of the stupid array of overpowered and quirky weapons Blood had alongside the core Shotgun/Machinegun/Grenade archetype all these games have >Boss Fights are crap Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War >8/10, incredibly satisfying slightly dragged down by some filler missions Pros >Very fun, arcadey with enough fine control to not feel simplistic >Great variety of planes >Good variety of enemy behavior, some enemies try and fight you straight up, others lure you into chasing them so their wingmates can get on your tail, some try and stay beneath attention until you're commited elsewhere and then come at you etc. >Dogfighting is satisfying as hell >Very graphically impressive for the PS2 >Very replayable >Story is insane and very memorable >Soundtrack is great and elevates the game Cons >Dogfighting is satisfying but the default response and expected behavior is to spam missiles at everything so you probably aren't going to do much of it on your first run through the game >Missiles are too effective and too plentiful in general, little actual reason to use your gun or special weapon >Only effective special weapons are just enhanced missiles, dumb bombs, rocket pods, napalm etc. look cool and are fun to mess around with but basically useless >Because of this no reason to take CAS or other non Air Superiority jets on missions, in fact you're usually punished for taking them. >If you vomit missiles at everything like the game encourages you'll not see a lot of the enemy behavior >Some filler missions that are just fly here shoot defenceless surface combatants without any story to keep you interested. >Some Emulations errors (not really the games fault tbf) Currently Playing: A Hat in Time >9/10, actually made me laugh like a child at a few points while playing Pros >Extremely Cute >Extremely Fun >Looks Gorgeous >Moment to moment platforming is incredibly satisfying >Lots of good community content Cons >Not that long, I'm about 50% of the way through the game after 5 hours according to the Stats on the main menu >No A Hat in Time 2 Maximo >7/10, very good, but its a ghosts n goblins game with the attendant frustration Pros >Rock solid platformer >Very satisfying >Still looks great and can be upscaled to 4k easily without any graphical glitches >PS2 Classic Cons >Bomb Skeletons >Piss Hard and sometimes archaic level and enemy design in the last half (The Pirate enemies in the ice world that you can't downward strike without taking damage for example)

>>6456 I actually found myself really disappointed with the Act 2 soundtrack after Deep Blue, since everything besides that track felt like a re-hash of what was already done in Act 1's OST. Also, the generic Hell level left me really fuarrrking disappointed. I really, really, really want to know if I'm actually the only person on Earth who has these issues with the game.

>Sonic Frontiers: had very low expectations for this one but in the end I enjoyed my time with it and absolutely loved it. It is a rough game crushed by the time constraints Sega gave the team, but it worked out pretty well as an "experimental game" for the future of the series. >Spark the Electric Jester 3: This franchise is pretty obscure to non-sonic fans. It's overall a good platformer franchise, but the third game...blew me away with how polished it was. Fun missions and levels, crazy detailed and gigantic level landscapes, a huge step up in Story from the other two games (the first game had a very barebones story before it got reworked to adjust to the new narrative). It's a cheap indie and if you like high-speed platforming you definately don't wanna miss this one. >Cave Story (Both versions on PC and the Nintendo 3DS port): I've finished the PC freeware version multiple times but never had the audacity to try out CS+, but when I did actually finish + I remembered how much I enjoy this game and the world around it. I mainly make music using Pixel's tools and formats and going back to how this almost 20 year old game had me in tears in multiple occasions is how you know a game has passion behind it. >INSANIQUARIUM DELUXE!!!!!: Do I need to say more than the title itself? If you haven't played it...PLAY IT!

You all need to play Ultrakill. RIGHT NOW. 10/10, Nails hard, incredibly fast, seemingly infinite skill ceiling, meaty combat, cheap, runs on a toaster. Sound track is insane, bosses are great, tons of stuff still to come. I've recently played Ace Combat 7 and Project Wingman. Both games were really good, especially the fights with Hughin and Munin, and the battle with Crimson 1 in Kings, though I felt as if the story in 7 was a bit weak, and the characters forgettable. Meanwhile PW was insane start to end, and the railguns felt more like Unicorn Gundam's Beam Magnum than actual railguns, which I liked. The games are in no way attempts to be like DCS World, or War Thunder, or other realistic-looking plane games out there, and I don't mind. They're just really fun arcade jet games, and I recommend anyone here to play it. >Pros (both): Amazing soundtracks. (Seriously, listen to Kings and Daredevil. Trust me.) Fun gameplay (Though, personally, i found AC7's planes to be a bit more on the sluggish side, despite being *faster* than PW's planes) Beautiful graphics. (However PW's a bit rougher around the edges, given it's an indie title compared to AC being from Bamco) >Cons (both): Controls. (Not the controls themselves, mind you, but the fact they're set to the starter options. Starter might be easier for new players, but the sooner you get used to the advanced flying controls, which let you roll your jet, you'll have much more control over how it flies and where it goes) Graphics. (In spite of the jets and the sky, obvious requirements for a plane game, looking beautiful, the ground is a bit lackluster in appearance. Some parts of both games even have the ground look more like a png of a Google Maps screenshot supposed to be a cityscape) >Pros (AC7): Amazing jets. (This is not mentioning the real-life jets, of course, but the Strike Wyvern, the Raven, on top of the other original jets from the other installments in the series, like the Nosferatu, the Morgan and FALKEN, the Shinden and the XFA all look downright stunning.) Multiplayer. (While PW is MP only, Ace Combat 7 has full on multiplayer. Sadly the modes are pretty restrict, only Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch, but not like it's possible to do much with a fighter game like that) Torres. (Its amazing how, despite many AC7 characters being frankly kinda forgettable, Torres stands out so well. He's no revolutionary, or a misguided fighter who only wants the best. He's simply a deranged man who's obssessed with killing a lot of people, and he hardly hides that. I like this simplicity) >Cons (AC7): The story. (Honestly, other than Torres' missions, the game is honestly kinda lackluster in story. Some characters end up disappearing to... never be seen again. A certain boss Yes. This means YOU, Mihaly, has straight-up plot armor, which makes him an annoying boss to fight.) The bosses. (There are actually really, really few bosses in this game. Mostly just Sol Squadron, the final bosses, Hughin and Munin and the occasional Arsenal Bird. The DLC missions however add Rage/Scream and the Alicorn, which are really nice) The characters. (Honestly, other than Count, Trigger (that's the player) and Torres the cast is kind of forgettable) >Pros (PW): The gameplay. (Good God the gameplay. Who would've thought that letting you carry up to 3 special weapons could make for so much more freedom in loadouts. And PW's AOA Limiter blows Ace Combat 7's Hi-G and PSM manuevers out of the water.) The characters. (Unlike 7, the cast of Project Wingman is honestly really charming and interesting to witness. From Comic and Diplomat's day-to-day banter, to Crimson 1's growing obssession towards you, to Kaiser's flair for the dramatic, they all are manage to be pretty entertaining. In fact, your WSO is voiced in this game, unlike AC7, and it's a big part of why I stuck with the legally distinct F-14D Tomcat until I got an AOA capable plane.) The missions. (All of them are really varied and interesting, going from jet combat in the middle of civilian air traffic, to a one-jet stealth bombing of a military base, to what can be one of the biggest air battles of its genre, you never get really bored of them) >Cons (PW): The jets. (They're not really bad per se, and you can reasonably tell which jets are supposed to be, since the game was done by an indie studio and couldn't afford the patents and trademarks involved with adding real planes to it, but I digress. Anyways, the VX-23, the not!F22 has a honestly very weird setup, with as much exterior missile hardpoints as interior ones, and overall looks like a weird mixture between an F22 and a Chengdu J20. And, a personal nitpick of mine, is the fact that there are no forward-swept wing jets in this game.) The performance (Depending on your machine, this game can be REALLY brutal on it. Your screen is gonna be covered a lot by missile and jet traces, clouds and explosions. My PC normally can handle the game most of the times, but on certain fighter or missile intensive missions it can slow pretty bad.)

Replayed the fallout classics this summer. I feel like a lot of lains here would love these games: post-apocalyptic setting, moral questions, dread, very cool tech designs and stuff, transhumanism: a completely different atmosphere from the new ones. The first has the best atmosphere, it's more serious and i actually felt the sense of loneliness and dread. But the second is good too >>5979 I never finished the game, but i know that her parents got divorced in the game. I guess the anime does not follow the story as the anime's parents are actually actors , right?

Been getting more serious about getting around to finally beating the original Legend of Zelda lately. I'm sticking to a self-imposed rule that makes it especially interesting to me though: it must be played like an arcade game, with no deaths allowed. Some things I like: -Unlike later games in the series, this game isn't afraid to actually challenge the player. -Beam sword damage isn't gimped to 1 damage always like in later games. It maintains the power of your sword itself so as you upgrade your sword it continues to be a useful skill. -A fair number of dungeons can be done in different orders, allowing for more playthrough flexibility. I always start with dungeon #3 on my playthroughs. Things I dislike: -Darknuts, these guys are so annoying -Wizzrobes, fuarrrk these guys seriously. Four hearts of damage!

>>6565 Good memories with that game. My mom and I used to play it together when I was a kid. It can help a lot to look up how their movement logic works. It's too much to get explain over text but iirc they will sometimes wander randomly, sometimes walk toward you, and sometimes walk toward the spot diagonally opposite you. >wizzrobes The rooms with 4+ fuarrrking wizzrobes are hell.

Another one is the book A Canticle For Leibowitz, which has inspired the whole BoS tech-religion stuff. But i know there are some well made mods for 2, so you might like those. This is a really cool forum that you should lurk, it has everything related to the fallout classics: https://www.nma-fallout.com/ Some people say that New Vegas has a similar feel to the second, I agree but only in some sections. >>6559 Tides of Numenera is genuinely one of the worst games I have ever played. Might even be the worst and I have played some garbage in my life. It is overwritten to a comical degree because that's what happens when you hire a bunch of professional writers and pay them by the word count and guess what, they still fail to deliver a compelling story. Basically, the game gives you an option to play as a non-violent pacifist which is what makes the most sense because the combat/skill check system is genuinely broken but the narrative completely collapses when you do just that. Also, there's an actual child in my party, dude, I'm not getting into any combat. So I play as this peaceful tourist and during the ending I meet the genocidal machine villain thing that has been trying to murder me throughout the entire game. Why do you want to kill me, I ask and this thing is unable to answer. Normally, it would justify itself by mentioning all the evil deeds that I had done. Well, I didn't do anything. It also mentions that the power I use is too dangerous to allow me to exist. I have never used that power. I don't even have it because you can ignore it. Anyway, I talk it into killing itself or I just kill I don't remember and suddenly my party, most of them murderers by the way, hates me because some people I have never met are insane now or something. That's the justification the game gives you. That's the story. It's insane, they were going for the Torment fatalism and they failed in the most spectacular way imaginable. Also, there's one more bizarre thing that I have to mention. The game has those choose your own adventure, text-based segments. OK, maybe they just didn't have the budget to model the areas but since the stories were already written they presented it in such a way. Understandable. Except those areas do exist, they are in the game and you visit them briefly during the ending sequence. So why not just let me play through them normally? What the hell? This game is trash. Don't play it.
Ender · 2023-01-12 19:59
>>6573 I made it maybe halfway through and quit. Based on the positive reviews, I actually thought I might somehow be playing an early access version by mistake. It's a bad game. I do not think this is a matter of taste. Ehhh it sounds like they did a lot of work on these locations and decided to cut them late in development. A lot more goes into a level than assets and paths.
Unspecified · 2023-01-13 19:19
>>6573 Text adventure segments are a good way to present novel or unusual scenarios or more evocatively do story scenes than might be possible using the normal game graphics given technical or budget limitations A lot of the games that use them are heavily based off TTRPGs and having a DM narrate something out or having the DM and a player go back and forth talking out a series of dramatic events or discussing what the results of a skill check actually look like is a big part of the fun of those games, and imo making use of it is a pretty smart way to bring some of that fun into a less flexible medium. A simple example I can think of is in the first pillars of eternity game where right at the start of the game there's a CYOA sequence where the player is scrambling up a steep slope in the middle of a storm to get to safety, there's a bunch of different skill checks that can be made, different variations of events and a couple different outcomes that can come out of it that wouldn't have been possible or would have been far less engaging and detailed if the sequence was played out in engine.
Morpheus · 2023-01-15 18:42
>>6567 >>6568 I'm playing Wasteland 2 for the first time atm and it feels more fallout than most of the fallout games. I'm about 10 hours into it and just barely starting to break into the story, I think its meant to be 80 or something hours long. Voice acting is pretty good, world is very interesting, scenario so far is also cool, a bit more complexity going on than Fallout 1 or 2 and I'm actually interested to see what happens. The XCOM style combat is a pretty good fit as well, but its a bit slow, also the default party is actual soykaf and I'm considering just starting over again with custom characters, I had just assumed they would probably be 5-6/10 but they're built all wrong so you should probably read a guide or something on character creation before starting Wasteland

It took me 9 months to finish Clannad. Was spoiled from the anime, but still cried a lot. Kyou is best girl. Kotomi has the best route, the ending makes it for me. Im gonna share my thoughts on some themeing. tl:dr the story has some japanese spiritualism in it. The Light Orbs are spirits. The kanji for spirit is read as dama, which is related to tama, ball. So Orbs of Life would be a better name for them than Light Orbs. When I first saw the show 10 years ago, I thought the orbs where peoples wishes and happiness and souls from an other dimension and the town granted happiness to Tomoya for doing all of that for everyone. Now I understand that all of the town came together to perform a miracle. Nothing supernatural happened to Kotomi for a miracle to happen to her. You don't need a god for miracles to happen. Ohh, yeah. I came to realize this after reading a blog about how heaven is depicted in Dragon Ball and Clannad Side Stories. Yukine side story is more explicit about her brother watching over her and Tomoya. https://thedaoofdragonball.com/blog/spirituality/cloud-soul-dragon-ball/ Heres the blog. A lot of people have don't like the ending to After Story. For whatever reason they may have, people feel like the story should've ended without reviving Nagisa. In the Side Story, which were written by Maeda, Kai and Suzumoto, they are more explicit about spiritual ancestors taking care of the town. I think the message is you can rely on your family and community for strength to get you through hard times. So the ending is consistant with the theme of CLANnad. On the first playthrough, Tomoya doesn't have the will to go on. By meeting and helping all the people in town, the spirits of the town grant him a miracle through all of the timelines. >town, people, flow of time listen to mabinogi, its good. When I first heard the full track, I knew that it was going for a spiritual, festival tone. https://youtu.be/bDbW860-AA8 [Embed]

These days I mostly just play old games on emulators, or the occasional dated pirated game on my other pc. Finally got into emulating gc/ps2 and that has been a lot of fun, so many great titles just on there that I see no reason to play cumbersome new games. My next goal is to figure out ps3 emulation. It's probably because I didn't expect anything good out of it, but despite the horrible performance issues in some areas and sometimes looking like Morrowind, the game very surprisingly blew me away. Just very solid overall compared to their latest entries in the series and I found myself enjoying a pokemon game not just because of cute pokemons. Now holds a place in my heart next to Black/White. Area Zero is absolutely stunning and the OST is in my music playlist somehow now.

Been playing Vintage Story quite a bit, coziest game I've played to be honest. It started out as a minecraft mod but the devs decided to just go all the way and develop it as their own game. It's basically just minecraft but way more in depth. What I love about it is how *physical* it is. In minecraft everything gets abstracted into little menus and it leads you to not really needing to build anything. Literally everything you need can be slapped into a tiny space. In VS though, a large portion of the systems are physically involved and happen in the actual game world. To craft pottery you actually slap clay onto the ground and form it, to craft tools you pour metal into molds (or hammer an ingot into shape on an anvil). You can store items on racks or just lean them up against walls. There's an actual purpose to building things which I love. Moreover, all the systems are much more complex and engaging. Cooking, farming, animal husbandry, beekeeping, smithing, mining, food storage, all have their own expanded systems and own little gameplay loops and the MOOD. It just nails it. The sound design and the lighting is close to perfect and mixed with the weather and season systems it just makes for such a cozy experience. Literally just cooking some food in game at night, listening to the fire crackle as the wind blows outside of your soykafty shack is the coziest soykaf ive ever experienced in a game The only real issue I have is mining. Theres a prospecting system that there's a guide for and good lord you need it, but even after learning how to mine effectively its still suuuuch a pain in the ass, but really besides that its all pretty good I really like this game lmao

>>5676 here I started pĺaying S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, after wanting to play it for like 2 months. Pretty comfy experience, leaving aside the bugs. It pushes the player to actually be a bit "tactical" and have some common sense instead of running straight for the enemy. I love the setting and it's noticeable the love the devs put on it. also, It works pretty well with proton.

>>5665 Recently played >Signalis Absolutely stellar horror game. At first I thought the gunplay and movement was complete ass and really muddy but after getting used to it, I've come to really enjoy how fluid the movement and feel of the game actually is. The shooting itself might be the only thing I feel is a weak aspect of the game but the level design props it up a lot. The puzzles are incredible for a survival horror game, and the visual design of the game is just perfect. I love the low res 3D model style with the super clean textures. There's some german, english, chinese, japanese, and even a tiny bit of korean lettering and such all throughout the game that adds that sorta mysticism you feel when you see kanji plastered everywhere in cyberpunk media. Also, the pastiche nature of the game really makes you feel closer to the pieces of art that the developers wanted to use as direct inspiration, or even included in the game itself. Paintings like the Isle of the Dead and the Shore of Oblivion and powerful pieces, and along with the inclusion of the King in Yellow, it really makes the game's style stand out from the rest of the horror games I've played. The story is widely open ended and really engaging, I just love trying to pick it apart. I don't think a piece of art has inspired me as much as this one in a long time. Currently playing >Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem So far this game is pretty goofy and I've been enjoying it. It's a bit too easy and the spooky parts of the game are pretty overbearing. Reminds me at times of that haunted house level in Vampire the Masquerade where it just constantly tries to do spooky things and scare you but it's just so hilarious cause it's trying so hard. The story is bizarre and interesting though, and the voice acting is pretty nice. The sanity meter having weird effects like faking your TV's volume going down on its own was really funny. Looking forward to how weird it gets. >Kingdom Hearts Surprisingly don't hate the disney parts of this game so far. It's been pretty frustrating at times because I picked the staff and dropped the sword at the start of the game and a few enemies just one shot me, but it's been a good time. Very typical take but the camera is definitely the main aspect that's holding the game back. Just gets in the way constantly, which is bad for an action game. Wish the bosses were a bit better designed too cause so far only the first two were actually memorable and fun. I mean soykaf, the Jafar fight only has like 2 attacks, and a million health so you just spend 15 minutes whacking a lamp. also playing sound voltex love that fuarrrking game

Been playing some GTA 5. Such a good game, very fun. Not perfect of course since like with every other GTA game, the world 'feels dead'. But still, very enjoyable for what it is. Story missions are pretty fun, I like the humour somewhat. The mechanics are also surprisingly good (I like first person mode best), weapons look good, and the graphics are also pretty.
Cowboy · 2023-04-22 22:51
Cruelty Squad. I just bought this game recently. It reminds me of LSD Dream Emulator with its environments and music, the game play itself remind me of Perfect Dark or old James Bond games. Some mechanics take getting used to but it's a nice game. Kind of hard though.

These two currently Daggerfall Unity is great, currently my favourite TES thoug it's much different from 3, 4 and 5 that I played. You really need to use your imagination and the dungeons can be a huge pain in the ass (get recall spell as soon as you can and don't be afraid to abandon quests if you can't find something), but when it works it works great. I usually listen to podcasts while playing. Great dungeon crawler and medieval life SIM with the main plot owershadowed by the side content. MDRG is a nsfw life SIM with the premise in the title. Very 4chan flavored. Got so immersed in the story and the relationship that I forgot that it's supposed to be mainly sexually stimulating. For some reason I really enjoyed the experience on android, although the buttons are too small sometimes

Mega Man X8. There's a lot I like about it - the greater characterization focus, the tag-in system, the three leads' different playstyles, and the increased depth that comes with the metal system, but there's a lot else about it - the levels in particular - that try my fuarrrking patience. The two ride chaser stages in particular make X4's and X5's look like a relaxing Sunday morning bike ride. The gameplay also feels a lot floatier and less tight (the snes entries are still sort of the gold standard for this) It's still good, but I think a lot of the esteem for it comes because it followed X7, which for any other series would have been a franchise killer, but the X series was already sort of inoculated against that with X6 - AKA: Great ideas, fuarrrk-awful execution, the game.

GTA V. I love the story. It's just as entertaining to watch as it is to play. I also like the sandbox-like quality of the game between missions. I stole a motorcycle and just being on that unlocked a Strangers and Freaks episode that required a motorcycle. Some paparazzi creep needed me to drive him up next to a celeb's limo so he could get money shots, and then his rival pulled up and stole all the money shots, so I had to chase the rival down with a dog. Luckily I picked the right train car before the trains departed. Good game so far. And the online's really fun too when you're not getting killed by asshole players.

World of Horror. It's an adventure rougelite inspired by Ito/Lovecraft that looks like it could've been made in the 80s. It's OK so far but it feels like there's a lot more to the game than it appears. Or maybe not. It kinda makes me want to play some Cultist Simulator again.

POWDER, a homebrew gem I've picked up on and off since the GBA days that's been ported all over. It's a basic but competent rogue-like that isn't afraid to poke fun at itself. Definitely a great stepping stone to the genre if you've been put off by how complex it can be; the game was originally for GBA after all, meaning it can be played with a very limited set of buttons. >>6906 Fun little game. Nothing super deep but its entertaining seeing how the stories play out and the music and art are both pretty nice, spare a few items/screens that look oddly amateurish. Gets a bit stale once you've seen all of the mysteries, but the dev seems to still be adding a few every so often. And I know custom mystery support is planned in addition to the current custom event support (unless it's already been added since I last played). Ever since I switched to Debian as my daily driver I have a lot less motivation to play games, especially if they aren't natively supported, but maybe I should look into configuring Proton to give it another shot...

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim I've been a fan of Vanillaware for a long time. They make those gameplay first games with absolutely amazing art and sort of old-school arcade feel. The stories in their games are whimsical, Saturday morning cartoon affairs. It's good stuff...or it used to be because just what the hell is this garbage? The gameplay is clearly an afterthought and the story is pure anime mega cringe. Teenagers, big robots, existentialism, anime melodrama. I hate it. And the English translation keeps the Japanese honorifics for some insane reason, you know, kun, senpai etc it's just embarrassing.

Completed Madou Monogatari 2 and Michikusa Ibun recently. Decent dungeon crawlers that, even though they're not English translated on PC-98, can be beat without much trouble since a lot of important information is conveyed purely through visuals and audio. DRPG fans should really give this series a try, at least for the unique "fuzzy" stats system and the Magical Voice feature if anything.

I've always loved the two mainline dishonored games, but just never got around to playing this one. Booted it up by chance not too long ago and got hooked. Gave it four playthroughs and while I don't think it's the best dishonored game, I think it might be the tightest experience among all of them. Currently Playing: ICO for the ps2. Just started yesterday, but I'm enjoying it so far. It's quite incredible how much new life the rendering options in emulators can breathe into a game. Minecraft. I play a lot of minecraft survival with my girlfriend. We always play a barely modded version of the game. This time it's vanilla other than every player having a random race with upsides and downsides. The server has a weird vibe, as there were a handful of other people who played on it for a while, but now it's just the two of us, building a base with neighbors that aren't around anymore. Halo 1 with Inferno Plus' Cursed Halo mod, couch coop. I play this with a friend of mine and we beat about a mission a week. It's a lot of fun and halo 1 has a big nostolgia value for me. >>5665 I've just finished playing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin for SEGA Genesis. Spider-Man has always been my absolute favorite super hero, so his video games on every console I've ever owned have always been a must for me. I owned a FamiClone (PolyStation) and played Spider-Ma: Return of the Sinister Six, I onwed PlayStation and both Spider-Man titles on it, I owned PlayStation 2 and every single Spider-Man title on it, so on and so forth... but my 1st console was Genesis and I didn't own the major Spider-Man title in it, one that early on in the console's life span was owned by pretty much 2/3rds of all Genesis owners... and for good reason, it's an excellent licensed video game. >Pros: 1. It was the 1st time a Spider-Man video game felt like one instead of just a video game with Spider-Man on top, his moveset is perfectly represented, websliging feels superb, having a web shield is helpful, and his standard punches are satisfying due to the lovely SFX... 2. They made sure to add elements of Peter Parker's life as you must take photos of villains for the Daily Bugle to make money for your web fluid, also you rest on your apartment to restore health, at the cost of time, important for the plot due to the Kingpin's bomb in NY. 3. While not every Spider-Man villain is present, due to his rogue gallery just being ridiculously large, the ones present are a terrific choice overall, especially due to it being Venom's 1st major console video game, due to the previous ones being on Game Boy, Game Gear and Master System... also the way you must defeat a few of them can be frustrating at first, but you grow to appreciate their uniqueness. 4. Kingpin's boss at the end is what a final boss should strive to be in a video game, he's the hardest one by fair, but not downright unfair, just tough to figure out at first, and the way they have Mary Jane descending into a pool of acid slowly as the fight goes on adds to the tension, it's also interesting that you can web up the chains to stop her descend for a brief moment, interesting design, immersive too. 5. Atmosphere is fantastic, those cutscenes with Kingpin talking to NY through the TV, with that moody OST in the background, the few cutscenes showing Spider-Man's interactions with the villains and his through process to figure out what to do next, it's all terrific and gets you pumped to go out there and put a stop to Kingpin, especially when Mary Jane gets kidnapped suddently, it's dark, but not too dark. >Cons: 1. It's minor due to the level design being built around it, but not being able to turn corners while wall crawling isn't very good at all... 2. I can see how someone back then, without internet, could get stuck and just despise playing this, at times I got quite frustrated too. 3. Kingpin final boss is good, but figuring out you can web MJ isn't obvious at all, and losing being an automatic Game Over is punishing. 4. Nightmare difficult dropping Venom on literally every level, including the tight corridors in the 2nd to last one, is quite a pain really. 5. Level design could be more inspired, the 1st level, and Kingpin's hideout are good, but the others feel too linear and/or short to me.

Just started The Book of Hours. It's a sequel to cultist simulator. Cultist simulator, despite the meme name, is probably the best written game ever, it's so elegant and effortless. It draws from occult tradition and esotericism but it brings its own system that's somehow just as obtuse and mysterious as the real thing. It's insane, just downright nuts. The Book of Hours seems even more in depth so far. This is just ridiculous, game of the year.

I started playing Valorant for eSports because my company decided it appeals to the youth, and I can get paid extra to represent our organization. This game feels like a modded Counter strike, but the player base is tame and it feels empty and soulless. I havent been called a glitterboy, nigger, gay, and nobody has told me to kys. One presumably pre-teen started yelling that he was going to report someone for hacking because he "stole his kill" and nobody even responded. When I gamed years ago, people like that would have been harrassed until they cried for being a bad sport and not just treating it like a game. Maybe 1/40 players uses a mic, and 12 year olds don't get ridiculed for whining or being bad. Also people have all kinds of shiny obnoxious skins, and it looks like micropurchases are the only way to get them although they have 0 effect on gameplay, so the game is not even pay-to-win. Where is the soul in games now? If I wanted to play an offline round of an FPS with bots I could do so with a million different and better games. Don't even get me started on how sprays are all paid for unlocks. Remember when sprays used to be whatever random picture you wanted and people would try to use the most fuarrrked up furry porn for the lulz?

Halfway through Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. The game doesn't have enough meat on its bones, but it controls like a dream. I don't like the heat system and it ends up also encouraging you to just run ASAP to a toilet to change every couple of tags, but I also don't know how you'd really fix it -- JSR1's level based system just meant that it could turn up the heat as you went through each stage and you had to deal with it. It also really needs side-missions. You can't have such fluid, free movement without a bunch of stuff to do with it. Literally every problem I've had with JSR and JSRF in terms of movement is gone. I'm probably going to buy Armored Core 6 at some point.

It's world is bigand somewhat open, you are told whereto go but are essentially free to go wherever you want, the whole structure is that of branching paths rather than wide open spaces like eg. Morrowind. The combat system so far is very simple, sort of lioe TLoZ but way simpler.
Jim Hilger · 2023-10-13 21:35
I just started Divinity Original Sin. I'd have greater respect for it if I had not gone through Baldur's Gate 3 twice. It plays much like BG3 since it is made by Larian but I keep wishing for a jump function. I'm getting used to it though.
Nell · 2023-10-13 22:11

>>7281 Are you saying they retain the same trash mechanics then? Fact: character "skills" that only function to alter dice-roll success probabilities in randomized mechanics have no place in singleplayer games. They should stay in multiplayer tabletop experiences where the whole point is to mess around with random surprises in a group of friends.

>>7283 But Persona 1 is really good though
BloodCat · 2023-10-16 02:33
>>7283 Fact: You are a user. Probability of success or failure is part of RPGs since it is not about your skill besides tactics and strategy. It is about your characters.
Marly Krushkhova · 2023-10-16 07:36
>>7286 There's nothing wrong with a bit of predictable randomness in games. The issue is rather that skill points invested into non-deterministic probability modifiers are functionally anti-features that exist to frustrate and deter the development of real player skill. How is the player to predict how many points to allocate to such a mechanic to achieve their means? In the best case scenario, where the probabilities and their modifications are known and reliable, this is difficult without a spreadsheet and statistical analysis. In other scenarios, where a game hides unpredictable mechanics such as randomized dialogue speech checks, nothing but trial-and-error memorization and savescumming is necessary for the player to investigate and determine how many skill points invested is good enough. This is a terrible mechanic that saps gratification from the player towards when they master it and in effect discourages the development of player skill (the skill of effective character development). It is an anti-skill mechanic whose function in tabletop role-playing facilitates fun surprises while you're screwing around with a group of friends--especially when there's already a dungeon master who can change the rules on a whim--but it has no place in a game. Sometimes it feels like you have to remind people that the "G" in RPG stands for game, because they can't seem to grasp that there's more to an RPG than role-playing. I.e., bad gameplay = bad RPG.

I just got through The Coffin of Andy and Leyley and will be patiently waiting episode 3. Also, I got a refund for Divinity: Original Sin since the game just felt so bland after having played Baldur's Gate 3. I plan to give Divinity: Original Sin 2 a try once the money comes through. Speaking of Coffin of Andy and Leyley, the fanart is great.

Currently playing Like a Dragon: Ishin! It's not bad...it actually has me doing all the mindless chores and minigames for Virtue and completions sake. Before that the last game I beat was Persona 5. And before that it was Ghost of Tsushima. Former was great considering my initial run took something like 120 hours, and the latter became one of the greatest games I ever played. I'm not much of a gamer these days so a game has to actually be GOOD for me to finish it.

Baldur's Gate 3 spoiled me. I had to get a refund on Divinity Original Sin 2 because it felt too limiting, I could not get settings to cooperate, and there was no model on the inventory menu. I then purchased on GOG Dragon's Dogma since it was on sale for less than $10 as oppose to the Steam version which was still priced at over $30. It feels a lot like Dark Souls but with controls similar to the modern Ys games in that you hold down a trigger to gain access to weapon abilities on the face buttons. I just wish the button configuation were completely customizable.

It's entertaining to just go through the game with all the random variables and class modifiers it throws at you and imagining how it really works at a more technical level, and as far as I'm aware it's one of the few RPGs out there that's this transparent about all of this. Most games in the genre prefer to abstract everything under layers and layers of pure randomness.

I'm 28 hours into Rogue Trader and God Emperor help me I've fallen headlong into the WH40k autism abyss yet again. I haven't felt this invested in the setting since reading tons of old white dwarf in the early 00's Good >The main cast's voice acting and writing is top tier so far >All of the quests have been enjoyable and well written, the plot is shaping up well >The combat is super satisfying, the sound effects for guns and powers are chunky and feel authentic >The people that made the game clearly did their research and really took the time to get the tone of the setting down. >The exploration, event management, dialogue and CYOA mechanics are all really well done and feel good >The game actually lets you play like someone who was born into this world, most RPGs don't let you be truly awful or make choices according to a moral code that isn't generic 21st century 1st world humanism, this game does, you can actually roleplay as an absurdly powerful tinpot dictator etc. >Pirated the game works perfectly under proton >You can make absurdly broken builds but you don't have to if you don't want to, there's a lot of viable variety >It doesn't fall into the trap of being edgy slop for no reason that some 40k does, but is OK with exploring the setting as fuarrrked up and weird, humanity feels like an alien race at points in game. Meh >Buggy as fuarrrk in general, I haven't got any gamebreaking bugs yet but there are many being reported, I have a bug that causes a loud banging sound to randomly occur on the ship's bridge, which is kind of funny and thematically appropriate, but I also get some random audio sequencing issues, not being caused by proton, they're being reported on windows too >Some of the mechanics and traits you can take are overly complex for no reason, rather than a percentage or something similar, you get some bonus expressed as a formula that could easily have just been a percentage or a flat number, other things are effects that are actually simple but described in the most confusing way possible >Combat can be very, very long winded >Its kind of hard to plan ahead and build characters out properly because the skill system is overcomplicated and huge >There are odd omissions, no way to rotate certain powers, no option to try and run from Void combat, etc.

Baroque (1999, PS1) got an english translation last year it's a 3d dungeon crawl, the vibes are good, the monsters are nasty, there's some slowly developed story I wish the gameplay was a little more varied, and it can be pretty hard to figure out what's going on, but it's definitely worth the time

I recently completed Tokyo Xanadu and completed the two epilogue chapters. It was basically a hack-and-slash RPG with intersections similar to Persona with interactions with companions. Playing Dragon Quest Xi currently. Classic formulaeic gameplay from 25+ years ago, but great fun. The characters have personality and look good (even the hero, if you install a mod to replace his ugly ass pink clothes w something better). The gameplay on hardmode requires some strategy or grinding and bosses are fun. Dungeon design so far has been uninteresting but the open areas and cities are very pretty and the overworld monsters (opposed to rando encounters) make the wilderness feel alive. Another big plus is that there are no missables on the game.. the one issue is that you cannot enable the draconian quests (hard mode) mid playthrough, at least not without cheat engine. Solid 7.5/10 so far from me, good game.

I completed FEAR and now I am playing Evernights. It is an apocalyptic "not-zombie" hack-and-slash dungeon clearing game with some dating sim elements. It is like Tokyo Xanadu but it deals with infected similar to zombies but smart and know how to use weapons as well as special powers given to a few chosen champions. In each act, you have a few days to clear a dungeon. If you do so early, you get to spend the remaining days just hanging out with companions and seeking supplies.

>>5665 I cannot stop playing Halo Infinite. I'm hooked on the multiplayer and meeting friendly people in Firefight mode. I thought the story and campaign was good. It was fun. Written well. Emotional. Parts of it were cut short due to the government response to the corona plauge but I really liked it. Halo was back. Halo 4 and 5 sucked ass and everybody hated them and it seems like they actually read the story of the criticism. The multiplayer however was basically broken on launch. Nothing worked right and there was not a lot of content. Now they've again listened to complaints and basically everything is fixed and the added soykafloads of content and FORGE MODE holy jesus all the community stuff is amazing. It's all fixed and fleshed out now. 10/10. I want to play STALKER again because I loved the three STALKER games from way back when I used Windows. Laion, if you use steam on linux they will run just out of the box. It is not hard to patch (DRM-free) and repack it as an AppImage, so you can just double click and launch it on any distro without any install, which makes literally easier to play games on linux. https://gitlab.com/formigoni/gameimage but there are dozens of examples, just look out for games like morrowind/fallout3-NW-4/oblivion/skyrim, which use some fixed paths for mods sometimes, make sure you change it. This is also easy to make repacks of modded versions of the game, so you don't need to install dozens of mods every time. ps: just remember to configure steam to enable all games (Steam -> Settings -> Steam Play and tick "Enable Steam Play for all titles" )

I've been playing SM64 largely for the first time lately, and I'm disappointed to say that it's not that great. I didn't have N64 growing up, so maybe I'm biased, but I can only stomach this game for an hour at a time, at most. I'm sick of going back to the same worlds 6 times, and some of the levels I just hate altogether, like Boo's Haunted House or whatever it's called. They also don't feel very immersive, they're more like a little arena rather than detailed worlds. I know the N64 has way less storage capacity (albeit a more powerful engine), but still. Crash Bandicoot was better. I'm still playing it, so maybe that says something in it's favor, but damn it's kind of boring. also where the fuarrrk is the red cap

If I had this back in the 90s I wouldn't even want to play crash that much. I agree though that redoing levels is kinda annoying. Well,. it's not at the start, but the longer you go in the game, the more tedious it feels. It's less "wow, what a cool new find" to "Where's that fuarrrking last star?". As for the levels, I like them. They feel uncanny and dream like and I think it really adds to the game's charm.

I was playing some old Need for Speeds that I really liked, like Underground 1 and 2. And Pro Street. I won't talk about flawed gems that are Undergrounds, because I am already done with them. But I will mention ProStreet. Need for Speed Pro Street I really like it, even way back when. I remember everyone hating on it because > No cops > Not street racing But I really enjoyed its track day vibe. I love the customization and the fact that there was no AI rubberbanding like in previous games. I love the variety of event types. Underground 1 is still my favorite vibe-wise, but Pro Street has just different vibes, which I like. Also the race queens are hot, and I am but simple man. Playing on my PC, so I am running all these with widescreen fixes, better controller support and better UI textures. No textures repacks or anything. Speaking of racing games... BeamNG.drive https://www.beamng.com/ Racing games are all the same, the only difference is the physics and cars you can drive. Well, this one is not like the other girls. SOFT. BODY. PHYSICS. No not like that, you perv. The cars deform, the axels break, the breaks fade, wheels misalign. It's very fun to just crash, which if u played FlatOut 2 or Burnout 3 you know it can be fun. It has pretty sim like handling physics too, which I am actually not a fan of usually(who would've thought that from NFS fan), but for this game it feels right. Soft body physics and sim handling for that full experience of losing control going 300 and wrapping around a tree. It also has many mods, tracks, cars, etc. But most importantly: https://beammp.com/ The game doesn't have multiplayer, but someone modded that in and I had so much fun with my friend it's insane. Experimenting with physics, trucking, racing, dragging, drifting we did it all. And it was very fun. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind https://openmw.org/ So, I was an Oblivion kid. Even though I was old enough to play Morrowind, and I've seen it. I never really played it. Not sure why. And doubly so, because the game is AMAZING. So much freedom! I've spent way more time in it than healthy in a short amount of time, and there's still so much more to do and see. I know that TES3 can be hard on beginners, so I watched a guide on how to make a character, I listened to the advice, but did roll my own stuff. The main thing is to just understand the underline mechanics. If you understand what the games does, you can make the game do what you want. And boy can you make her dance. After I finish the main quest on this character, I plan (at some point later) to mod the game, Oh did I not mention? Yes I am playing vanilla. Well, as vanilla, as I can get with OpenMW. So just some lighting, water and UX upgrades. Quake https://github.com/Novum/vkQuake https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/dwellv2p2.html I won't say much. It's Quake. I play in vkQuake. I finished official game many times, as well as, Arcane Dimensions. I currently (well off and on) playing through dwell episodes. So far, very very good soykaf. I played some more stuff but put less time in them recently, so even though I could say much more, I will instead just mention some: Rise of Nations (a very cool RTS similar to AOE), Kenshi, Skate 3, Minecraft(specifically TerraFirmaCraft mod), Stronghold, Xenonauts. And many more! I am thinking of either emulating or buying a PS2. Since I never had that back in the day and it has tons of titles.

SIGNALIS. It is *a lot* - 8 years of author's work to be precise, and a lot could be said about the underlying lore, symbolism and references/*signals* crafted by someone coming from the same metaphorical place as myself. It resonated with some private dreams of mine, while expressing the tragic love in the cold abyss of deep space. You could say it brought together BLAME!, SH, RE, NGE, GITS, but it also became something more than these things. Probably my only objection to it is Yuri - I would make it into a shounen-ai piece about robotic femboys/androgynes/bishounen but oh well - we get what we deserve; Yuri moved first - Yuri it is.
