Modern(ized) Roguelikes

Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2021-10-27 18:50
Hi, I guess some (most, all) of you are familiar with roguelikes like cataclysm, dwarf fortress or Caves of Qud. Well, my question is the following: Are there any modern roguelikes or modernized versions of old roguelikes, which keep the feel and the possibilities of these old games, while providing a more comfy gameplay-experience? I am mainly concerned with the heavy reliance of old roguelikes on the keyboard, while the mouse input is severely lacking. In the age of cheap and portable mouses, this shouldn't really be a concern anymore. Another minor point is the graphical component. There are tilepacks, which are nice, but an isometric roguelike would be pretty cool. I know about project zomboid, but that one doesn't quite scratch the itch that i developed since i discovered CDDA. I know i may sound entitled, and i imagine developing games is something that takes lots of effort and time, and maybe those things i mentioned are exactly the types of features that are hard to accomplish without severely limiting the variety of gameplay features. But i still have hope that maybe there is something like what i described. Thanks in advance!

>>5483 The modernizer roguelikes are now called roguelite(and I have even read it as roguelite-like, whatever that mean). As an example, look up Dead Cells.

Hades is an isometric roguelite. Very pretty too.

Does Synthetik: Legion Rising count as a roguelike? Run and gun!

Wildermyth isn't super challenging unless you bump the difficulty all the way up, but once you do and slap iron man mode on it's pretty fun. Pretty comfy way to waste a lot of time on all the campaigns. I KNOW THE ARTSTYLE IS CANCER; but you really get used to it and it has a decent charming soundtrack and atmosphere. It can be played entirely with a mouse and the amount of activatable abilities are pretty small so hotkeys can be nice but not required. I'd do your first few campaigns on tragic hero for comfy, but highly recommend bumping it up once you feel like you know how to abuse the mechanics and avoid most hits. From the games you mentioned though I have to highly suggest Tales of Maj Eyal. Graphics aren't super and you will probably end up using your keyboard as much as your mouse if not more but it is hands down the best roguelike I've played. Super fun, classes all play really uniquely. The in game chat is wholesome and really helpful.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is my favorite roguelike. It has traditional complexity but the whole game can be played with your mouse. It has a high learning curve and lots of in depth class/race/skill possiblities. Pathos is a Nethack port that I play on my phone which has simplified UI.

Been playing Project Zomboid. I don't think it's sold as a roguelike but it counts. I played it many years ago and the map is huge now.

>>6807 I think you may be more into action roguelikes. Games like Binding of Isaac, Hades, Dead Cells, etc. Luckily when you look up "roguelikes" on Steam or other retailers, action roguelikes tend to show up far more than traditional roguelikes (probably cause they are way more popular and there are a lot more of them)
