Steam Deck

Tank · 2021-08-02 15:45
Already put a reserve down 30 minutes after it went live and already I'm back ordered until Q1 2022. As more and more information is coming out, I've been getting hype about this and I haven't felt this way in decades. Who else is getting one? >inb4 Valve does what Nintendon't
Jens Hansen · 2021-08-02 16:05
I'll say what I said when it was announced: no expandable storage, no sale. And no an SD card doesn't cut it.
Debbie Charteris · 2021-08-02 16:29
>>4989 They said you can expand the storage, though it's not so easy a caveman can do it.
Joe Bloggs · 2021-08-02 19:53
>hyped for a DRM cancer box
Morpheus · 2021-08-04 21:39
I hope the steam deck will spawn a whole new scene of linux distros and software. I wouldn't gamble by pre-ordering it though. It might just be another piece of over-hyped tech. >>4994 Hopefully you will be able to uninstall Steam without borkage.
Void · 2021-08-05 01:26
>>5000 >Hopefully you will be able to uninstall Steam without borkage. Valve said numerous times that you can do whatever you want with it. >Install Windows? Sure >Install EGS? Sure >Install GOG Galaxy? Sure
Jim Hilger · 2021-08-05 07:37
>>4988 >inb4 huge fail like steam machine
Pris · 2021-08-06 11:13
>>4994 OP does sound like a bit of a child with the language but Steam Deck is just a portable PC. Great value for money because Steam is losing money on each one trying to get it to succeed. Just put a different distro on it and play games.
Zhora · 2021-08-10 09:11
more importantly, will we get a new psp?
Cowboy · 2021-09-03 20:18
>>5017 This is the new PSP.
Nobody special · 2021-09-04 00:08
seems less useful than my laptop, but i could see it as a viable console alternative for people who use a phone/tablet for everything and just want something that can play games.
Nguoi La · 2021-10-27 21:41
>>5017 The specs of this thing should be more than capable of emulating PSP at 60fps. So there you go.
Rick Deckard · 2021-10-27 22:13
>>5007 > OP does sound like a bit of a child with the language It's just common parlance in English communities these days I think. > but Steam Deck is just a portable PC. Great value for money because Steam is losing money on each one trying to get it to succeed. Just put a different distro on it and play games. So we might finally get useful portable computers. Right when I no longer need them because commute is vastly reduced thanks to remote work. Heh, of course that's how it'd go...
Spooky · 2021-11-21 05:39
>>5487 Isn't that a laptop?
Joey · 2021-11-21 18:43
>>5007 Yes it has a design basically same as any gaming geared UMPC except hopefully cheaper than those things being they cost around $1,000.
Jean Dupont · 2021-11-22 20:18
Even after getting delayed steamdeck will release before dragonbox pyra. I feel bad for people who preordered that 5 years ago. LOL!
Mitnick · 2021-11-26 02:39
>>5007 Bro, you’re either a fuarrrking manchild buying a new toy, OR you’re some lowlife advertising for some glitterboy that makes 200 times what you’ll make in your life in a single year. Kys you insubordinate.
HELIOS · 2021-11-26 11:35
>>5589 I remember talking about the Pyra on 8chan's /cyber/ board in 2015. It hurts lain

>>4994 sounds like someone isn't a hacker
Pulse · 2021-12-02 07:36
The controls on this thing look like a bag of soykaf, how can people be hyped for a device that gets literally the most important aspect wrong? And more importantly, how can people keep fuarrrking this up?
Crazy Jake · 2022-04-05 03:51
Q2 here, waiting patiently for my email. They said they may send out two batches a week, so things should speed up hopefully.
Tyrell Wellick · 2022-04-11 14:44
Hope you lain deckbros enjoy your purchase and follow up here. I've waited so long to purchase this, that it looks like I may be able to build a desktop before I'd be able to get my hands on this thing lmao
Roy Batty · 2022-09-05 20:18
>>5925 A deck bro here. I had it for 2 months now and I didn't play on my main PC during all this time. This thing surprised me on how well it works.
Nguoi La · 2022-09-11 14:42
>>6250 >>5925 How is the performance and day to day living with this thing in reality? It's hard to get a feel from videos, everybody is jerking this thing of like its the second coming of Christ. I'm tempted, but idk.
Eldon Tyrell · 2022-09-12 12:31
Looks so big for small handlers
Mentat · 2022-09-18 02:10
Is the etched glass worth the upsell? Drive replacement is looking pretty easily thankfully.
Yu-ichi · 2022-09-18 12:17
>>6288 >>6269 Give me a reason not to pull the trigger on this thing. It's basically all I've wanted from a gaming console, a competent linux gaming device with easy emulation configuration and not soykaf hardware. But I'm wary of buying anything new.
Koos van der Merwe · 2022-10-11 20:12
>>6289 Well I got one and while its pretty impressive hardware and the concept is very neat the machine itself is basically a bunch of wasted potential, at least for me. It has some really cool features and there are some titles that it really excels at but for proper PC gaming, the stuff that imo would give this an edge over other systems around the price range its not very good. Its pretty good for most controller friendly titles but then anything is, only advantage the deck has here is the massive steam library compared to Switch, PS5 etc. Trying to play Project zomboid on the deck (a verified "great on deck" game) was like trying to play with my nose after using the PC controls, and even after an hour or so of playing and getting used to everything it felt stitled and clumsy in comparison. Shooters are in a weird limbo spot where sometimes they feel great, almost mouse and keyboard like, sometimes they feel absolutely awful. (I tested Dusk and Doom Eternal, both verified, as well as Ion Fury, unsupported, all three ran fine and performed great but the controls are super clumsy compared to the M+KB experience, which is to be expected, but the decks features that should bring them up closer to M+KB, the gyro aim and the trackpads, are very clumsy, I like Gyro aim too, I used it a lot for RE4 and WiiU emulation in the past, but the implementation feels off for the deck imo) Trying to play games marked playable but not verified and unsupported titles that need mouse and keyboard was universally a disaster, which is disappointing but I guess fair enough. Some games that are listed as verified actually have massive problems, Call Of Jaurez gunslinger for example has a huge amount of audio crackle randomly that wasn't present on desktop linux for me, DS2, which is also verified, has crashing issues for me and runs like ass for a game its age. The vibration motors are lopsided and feel bad in use, there are sharp edges along the seams of the chassis plastics, the screen has tons of backlight bleed (tbf, only noticeable on a black screen but still) and fuarrrk huge bezels that contribute to the Deck's canoe paddle like 11" size, its difficult to hold if you're used to regular controllers and valve made several amateur hour mistakes like putting the headphone and charging port on the top rather than the bottom of the device and not putting a cover on the microsd card slot, ensuring that it will fill up with fluff and soykaf I really wanted to like this thing, some play sessions I've been absolutely loving it, most of the time I've been frustrated. I kept thinking this would be better plugged into a keyboard and mouse, and if that's the case what's the point? Back it goes. Hardware QC aside I think maybe I'm just not the intended customer. I think if you don't have much experience with PC gaming and are looking for a cheap in this is the thing to get. I would much rather have this over a switch or a PS5 or something, especially because its an emulation and older gen PC games behemoth, in particular I think this would be a fantastic step up for someone coming from a switch or as a first console for a kid or new gamer that's got a friend/family member with a big steam library, but I think I'll just go back to my weaker Vega 7 equipped laptop. Also this thing is genuinely less practically portable than a laptop IMO, it needs a case to be transported safely and its so chunky in that case its going to fill up a good part of an average backpack, a laptop as a practical matter will take up less space and can do more. I can't imagine pulling this thing out on a plane or train without drawing a huge amount of attention and it would probably be almost more difficult to use than a laptop in either of those situations.
Shogun · 2022-10-14 10:53
>>6375 OK, having the thing for a few more days now I have changed my opinion a bit, I'm still annoyed with the QC issues my unit has but I'm way overblowing the comfort and control issues with the deck. I've been playing a lot of emulated stuff as well as more Dusk and Ion Fury and I think the problem with the ergo's is more that they're very different to anything I've used before, holding the deck your immediate thought is gamepad but its more like a weird gamepad keyboard+M and joystick mix and you have to spend a few hours acclimatising to that mix, you also need to take the time to look at control schemes and edit them a little, the deck depends heavily on its trackpads and gyro to make pc content workable with coarser controls and they both need tweaking to match you as an individual, but once that's done they're very workable so long as you are in a position where the device is fairly well supported. Lying on your back you aren't going to be able to use the gyro basically at all but elbows on knees with the deck in front of you it becomes very easy to use the combination for navigation and aiming. Anything that doesn't need mouse like input is quite easy in any position. The DPAD, sticks and Buttons are all great. The deck has a tendency to cause some wrist strain for me if I play it while lying down due to the way you have to hold it to stabilise it properly while being able to look dead on at it. The paddle buttons on the back are useful but a bit hard to press without shifting the device so I've got into the habit of remapping more administrative controls to them. There are still some amateurish aspects to the controls though, the analog sticks and the triggers both have extreme, almost comically large deadzones by default that makes using them properly a bit more difficult than it needs to be, the triggers also need to be viced down to register as actuated fully when most other systems with analog triggers seem to register a full press at 90% activation or so. It causes issues in some games where you've one action mapped to the analog range and another to the full press. There is also a small lip before the shoulder bumpers that makes pressing them slightly harder than it should be Exploring my library more most unsupported games that work on a linux desktop are playable on deck well enough if you're willing to fuarrrk with the controls hard enough. Most of the verified games I have are also working well, though there are complaints online about some verified games actually only working great until you get past the first hour where the testing stopped and you can then run into major issues. Emulation is also extremely easy to get going and very impressive, I've been trying out some PS2 and WiiU games this evening and both systems are very enjoyable at above native performance on the deck, the same should be true for Switch as well. Its a shame my first impression was so negative because once I got settled this is an incredibly impressive device. I've been playing games and enjoying them more in the past few days than I have in years with my main PC.
Y.T · 2023-03-09 16:22
Is this thing good enough to be worth buying instead of a GPU upgrade? I like playing games but I feel like every time I sit down at my computer I end up doing everything except playing games, and to be honest the idea of playing stuff in bed or on the couch is really tempting.
Erik Johansson · 2023-03-09 23:12
>>6710 I got one for exactly the same reason, I want to distance myself from my office setup when playing. The deck is great for certain types of games (personal favorite is Brotato), ok for most, and bad for some (heavy control schemes that require keyboard or accurate mouse movements).
Dr. X · 2023-07-26 02:10
I bought one during the summer sale so I'd be able to do stuff while away for work and honestly it's pretty much just a slightly weird gaming laptop with somewhat limited OS capability. I'd like to be able to install AUR packages without it getting reset during an update but I think it's mostly fine.
John Titor · 2024-02-17 21:11
Can you still buy a new Steam Deck today?
