Grand Theft Auto
Just another Random Lainon · 2021-04-20 21:17
What does Lain think of the Grand Theft Auto series? Personally, it's my favourite series of video games. I've been hooked ever since I first played Grand Theft Auto III way back in the day. Since then, I've played almost every title with the exception of GTA: London 1969 (an expansion pack for the first GTA), GTA Advance and GTA: Chinatown Wars. My favorite is GTAV and I'm curious to know yours. I don't think I'll ever get tired of these games.
I think what appeals to me the most about the GTA games is the fantasy of being a career criminal in a bustling metropolis. I also love the vulgar, and often dark, satire of American culture.
I must say that I'm not fond of Rockstar's current treatment of the franchise. I firmly believe that there could have been multiple expansions for GTAV and a new entry with GTAVI if they hadn't decided to invest so heavily into GTA Online, something that I used to enjoy but have now grown apathetic towards due to the increasing monetization and the toxic player-base. However, I don't let any of that ruin my fondness for the franchise as a whole.

Gta2 was still the best in my view, simply because i felt they were trying too hard in the other games.
It went downhill after that, 4 being espcially bad.
It was very creative in a lot of ways and mad fun.
I play san andreas on occasion again, but it must say its pretty bad, its a console port and it shows.

GTA2 was a fun game, and I'd love to see Rockstar revisit Anywhere City some day. However, I seriously don't agree with your other statements, especially:

Because, frankly, I don't even know what you meant by that.
>I play san andreas on occasion again, but it must say its pretty bad, its a console port and it shows.
It's true that the "3D" era GTA games haven't aged well (especially GTAIII), but I would say that they are still very good games.

Always Thought GTA IV was underrated because of the vehicle and weapon physics which where better than in V even, but they cut out so much from the previous games that it felt like a disappointment anyway. Never Got the appeal of the 2D ones because GTA games (to me) are all about driving.

I loved the atmosphere in GTA Chinatown Wars.
Imo the best in all of the games together with Vice City.
I also played a lot of Liberty City Stories from which I got like 30% of my music taste when I was 14.

I expected the gameplay of IV with the content of SA, but it's an in between instead, not having its own standout appeal. Both driving and shooting is not bad but more basic and there are tons of games which are similar, as apposed to IV. Movement felt more sluggish even compared to IV and you had all these forced slow walking missions. The heist missions were few and far between even though there were the best part of the game. I think i also like 2000's New York, cellphones and internet cafes more than LA, smartphones, facebook and so on.
There is also that crowbcat video showing how many details were lost from IV to V even if it's kind of nitpicky.
However i only played the ps3 version and stopped playing before the online mode came out, so I'm thinking about playing it again someday because i might like it more because of that and not having expectations as high.
Dr. X · 2021-04-25 19:25
I liked SA for a lot of crazy content and big map. Didn't even finish IV, because it felt like a significant downgrade - most missions felt just like "realistic" generic soykaf - shoot this, steal that etc. Seems like they focused a lot on minigames, but why would I play bowling in a fuarrrking GTA.
Acid Burn · 2021-04-25 19:28
>>4685
>Because, frankly, I don't even know what you meant by that.
In gta1 if you jacked the wrong car it would explode or get chased by those little explosive rc cars.
Gta2 was a topdown shooter sort of with extremely creative gameplay, items, atmosphere and mission design.
It had cool weapons like electro guns, killing spree bonuses, funny characters that you had to waste if you completed all the mission, vehicle hacks like mines and oilslicks which are still mad fun today and other really interesting stuff.
Also being a clone in the second city and soykaf like that, some of the dialogues and missions were just too damn good like the flame throwing fire truck in city 3.
I could go on a lot more but it had really sticked out from the crowd.
Since gta3 it turned out just be some sort of big city vehicle gangster sim, there was nothing really remotely interesting standing out in post gta2, it was all the sort the same as driv3r, mafia or others of the sort with different theme.
The story and characters werent even that interesting, its just typical gangster soykaf.
And compare the boredom to gta2 where at max wanted level you had tank roadblocks just aimlessley firing at you and military guys in the street, with the gangs if you really pissed em off they had flamethrowers and rocket launchers, havent seen a game since with that sort of carnage potential since postal 2.
In san andreas the "tank" just catches fire eventually and you just steal another one, they dont even shoot at you anymore.
Instead you have cops literally materializing in your field of view and just running at you and shooting, that is if they dont get stuck in the wall.
Gta4 removed the military entirely, it was just a horrible game from start to finish for me, sure the vehicles handled nicer and the world was bigger.
But you could tell it was even more milking that the other useless soykaf like dating and gambling in san andreas, which also had some terribly designed missions imo.
Would never bother with 5.
I also like to say id did like how the san andreas world had a bit all of everything, but you tell it was all cramped like, it just didnt offer proper outdoor feeling, compared to driv3er for example which altough simplistic had a lot better feel to it.
Favorite character is ryder cuz he cant drop the water and gun still being the flamethrower in gta2 or vehicle mines if that counts.
I think my favorite mission would be the one in gta2 where you have to take a firetruck with a flamethrower and torch a 100 corporate people or the one in gta1 where you board the train and it explodes.
Also how many of you exterminated the populace in gta1?

>There is also that crowbcat video showing how many details were lost from IV to V even if it's kind of nitpicky.
Ah, yes. That video. "You can pick up a brick, therefore, this game is better than the other game!" Most of the things pointed out in that video were situational at best and ultimately contributed very little to the big picture, in my opinion. I like Crowbcat, but that video was incredibly biased and only served to strengthen the "GTAIV good, GTAV bad" mentality that has been growing for a while now. I think both GTAIV and GTAV are enjoyable for their own reasons and the tribalism regarding the two is utterly ridiculous.
>However i only played the ps3 version and stopped playing before the online mode came out, so I'm thinking about playing it again someday because i might like it more because of that and not having expectations as high.
I think you should give the game another try. Stay away from Online, though.

I still don't agree but I respect your opinion. For me, causing random violence shouldn't be the end-all, which is why I ultimately prefer the more story-driven GTA games. Hell, even the Saints Row games, which pride themselves on being mayhem simulators, have stories. If I want to let off some steam, sure, I'll see how long I can hold onto a high wanted level, but that's not why I play these games.

Fair enough, i can get behind it, but its not like the gta stories are that interesting.
Since gta2 was mostly a mayhem simulator and imo the best game i resent the fact that so much of it was removed just for it to become a "normal" game.
Once the games are played all you are left with are those useless mini games and the objectively terrible ai, in san andreas atleast.
The gang turf war was about the only good gameplay mechanic san andreas really brought to the table, sadly it was completely nullified by the terrible ai that ran around for minutes aimlessly, if it wasnt stuck in a wall, the best part was if you tried chasing after them you would lose the battle.
Quick side question, im working on a sort of gta like game, was wondering if there would be any interest in anyone helping me.

It depends on your taste. For me, I like crime stories, so the stories of the GTA games appeal to me. I wouldn't say that any of them are masterpieces, but they don't have to be. They get the job done and they're fun to follow along, in my opinion.
>The gang turf war was about the only good gameplay mechanic san andreas really brought to the table, sadly it was completely nullified by the terrible ai that ran around for minutes aimlessly, if it wasnt stuck in a wall, the best part was if you tried chasing after them you would lose the battle.
The turf war stuff is definitely my least favorite aspect of San Andreas for the same reasons you gave, so I agree with you there. Overall, however, I think San Andreas was ahead of its time content-wise, even if that content was rough around the edges.
Which GTA2 radio station was your favorite? Mine's Funami FM. There's nothing like tearing down the streets while a hyper-active Japanese girl yells at you over neurofunk.

I dont mind so much the gangster stories, which yeah dont need to be master pieces.
But compared to gta1/2, which had a very interesting non linearity and more ways to play the game that didnt feel so oddly forced like going around tagging stuff.
Gta3 became the start of this sort of serious type gameplay, whereas in 2 in particular there was just a so much cool stuff that i never saw in any game again since.
I like serious themed games, but i just feel that from gta2 to 3+ so much of what made it really great somehow got lost, every once in a while i can still play gta2, wheras san andreas, which i played the heck out of it just doesnt have any juice so to speak.
I enjyo racing games a lot too, but comparing to many of them san andreas doesnt have much either that others dont have better, other perhaps the range of vehicles itself.
>Which GTA2 radio station was your favorite? Mine's Funami FM. There's nothing like tearing down the streets while a hyper-active Japanese girl yells at you over neurofunk.
The looney fm dude was funny too also the zaibatsu guy talking about winning a funeral service was lol.
>I'm not into gamedev, but I'm curious to know the details of the game.
Every time i wanted to make a thread about it the spamfilter ate it.
Well there is a lot to say but the important stuff being it on the torque3d engine, which is really great for many things but not without issues.
I made about 20 different vehicle templates, from quad to monster truck, the larger ones still need more tuning while the smaller ones are more or less working, it took me a month to figure out the middle values for stuff.
I also got a good concept for a huge outdoor world and work on a dynamic loading system.
I havent dont any of the world yet, i want to make a system to have have heightmap editing with an external program due to the size, its not rocket science, but its still a good batch of work to have it be both ways.
Ai is mostly good enough for moving and shooting, the rest is pretty much extendable, you done need all that much extra except more complex processing stuffs.
About 10 different handguns and working on grenade launcher with custom ammo types, in fact i would like to copy the weapons system from arma3(great game btw).
Should also note i sit on about 5G of high def art assets i want to use, but i need to convert and catalogue and materialize and all the other bullshit then i can do fantastic outdoor environments.
Its fun to go on rides sometimes, but the constant gametest and tweaking is wearing me out.
This post already is a wall of text so... yeah.

Fun fact, gta2 was actually a 3d game, but played 2d, i could do that too, but i want to make a real 3d game.
I do love 3d, what i mean more is in terms of style and functions.
Sadly i dont know if i can remake the oil slick, which is also a great feature, but vehicle mines and mg will go in.
>I actually wouldn't mind playing a true spiritual successor to GTA2
Im not making a spiritual successor, its just a game i make and i put in whatever i feel fits.
But there is lots of inspiration i can take from it.
I plan to take many features of different games, maybe even some sort of hacking and remote controlled vehicle system eventually and whatnot really.

>Hell, even the Saints Row games, which pride themselves on being mayhem simulators, have stories.
Saint's Row 3 was a masterpiece of satire on the whole mayhem-simulator concept, while simultaneously being a fantastic mayhem-simulator in itself. It knows what it is, and revels in it. The opening scene where the heroes steal a bank vault (not the contents, the vault itself) while dressed up in bobblehead-costume versions of themselves really sets the tone right off the bat.
Plus, one of the greatest voice casts ever. What other game gives us Sasha Grey, Hulk Hogan, and Burt Reynolds?

Does anyone found collecting money in any 3d or HD era GTA game (I didn't play V, so maybe except that one) to be a bit... pointless? Without any significant abilities to spend it - other than of course buying ammo, clothes, and sometimes mod cars - there is certain point in gameplay where you have so much cash it stops being relevant. And despite that, after succesfully completing another mission, you're rewarded with set usless amount of currency. In GTA2 money was necessery for saving game progress - but GTA3 had this strange mechanic where you got paid for bumping random cars on the street, so you can obtain 10k just by reckless driving. In later entries there were of course properties to buy so maybe Rockstar did see this problem - but again - by the midpoint of the game you still had enough money to stop caring about it. I think San Andreas got the closest to making money important again, i.e. debt collectors start appearing when you lose money in casinos and your account balance is negative. At least that was some incentive to earn again. Otherwise it'd be just another arbitrary number without any serious impact on the gameplay. Does more expanded economy in a GTA game would make it more engaging? Or maybe something like in Yakuza 0 where money is just fancy way of having experience points? Would it even fit into GTA gameplaywise?

I hope they bring back the actual "kingpin" aspect of GTA that Vice city started (But in all honesty Vice city stories basically PERFECTED).
In Vice City and Vice city stories you FEEL like you are Scarface you kill the kingpin you build this fuarrrking underworld empire and you just watch your money tick and up and up more and more rapidly as you keep playing. I remember that VCS took it to the biggest extent it ever saw it (There were like 30 properties in the game and once they were all fully upgraded you literally earn like 1mil every ingame day)
The Main story was more like a "loose rail" you sorta stuck to and got referenced in the more numerous empire building missions.
GTA:SA did this really weird angle where they basically forget the main story halfway through, go have you build this massive criminal empire and then issue a call to adventure to have you return to the main story. which i feel didn't really clique that well
GTA:5 sorta messes up with the "bank robbers" angle since you basically a set amount of money you can earn and once you spend it you've spent it (Business in GTA gives you like a few k ingame WEEK max)

Money was almost pointless in any gta game.
Usually you couldnt even get the good items with money either way, counting up even to gta4(dunno bout 5).
San andreas tries to make it more interesting by making vehicles purchasable, but it was clunky, so was buying all other stuff.
San andreas did make money useful too in other ways like property and car tuning, but on the whole it didnt add all that much value.

Saints Row 3 was great from a story and character perspective, but its open world left a lot to be desired, especially when you compare it to its predecessors Saints Row 2 and GTAIV. I still play it from time to time, though.
>>4760
Money in GTA games didn't matter until San Andreas, where they actually gave you things to spend money on besides weapons, prison bail and health insurance.
>Does more expanded economy in a GTA game would make it more engaging? Or maybe something like in Yakuza 0 where money is just fancy way of having experience points? Would it even fit into GTA gameplaywise?
GTAV was a step in the right direction. They even had day trading where you could buy stocks in the in-game companies. Personally, I don't think they ought to add too many things for you to buy, because then you'll end up with GTA Online, where EVERYTHING costs money, and in a game where you're encouraged to steal things, that's no fun.
Now that I think about it, most open-world games with a currency system/economy run into the same issue as GTA: What do you spend all of your money on? Some games fix this by periodically taking money away from the player or introducing some kind of tax for items, but that's a very cheap way of rectifying the issue, if you ask me.
>>4762
>as well but they fuarrrk it by making your first ever encounter with Michael in setting him committing an act of unprovoked extreme violence
Are you talking about the security guard who got shot? That was Trevor's doing.
>And Franklin goes from his whole "Look im just TRYING TO DO MY JOB!" angle to literally killing dozens of people in two missions
True. However, you can say similar things about Niko. He's haunted by his violent past and wants to start a new life, yet, by the end of the game, he's got a body count that would make a terrorist blush. Classic story/gameplay disconnect.
>In Vice City and Vice city stories you FEEL like you are Scarface you kill the kingpin you build this fuarrrking underworld empire and you just watch your money tick and up and up more and more rapidly as you keep playing.
That's funny. I think the idea of "rising to power" was the weakest aspect of Vice City. Tommy just seemed to get things handed to him with barely any effort on his part outside of being a gun-toting maniac. By the end of the game, I didn't feel as if I'd earned anything. San Andreas did that much better. San Andreas had the better story and characters overall, in my opinion.

It's a very degenerate series that glorifies some of the worst aspects of humanity. The games used to be really good, my favorites are San Andreas and GTA4. I thought GTA5 was awful, it was very disappointing to me. I didn't enjoy the narrative nor the gameplay. The 3 character thing was awful, none of the characters were likable in any way whatsoever, and most importantly, the gameplay sucked. Worst thing being the driving model, and you drive so much in those games so if you don't enjoy the driving you're not going to enjoy the game. To be honest the driving felt like some kind of GTA ripoff or something, felt like some kind of bargain bin go cart game. The cars kinda turn on their own axis, it's ridiculous. I honestly think it has by far the worst car physics in the series, even GTA3 wonky strange physics are much preferable because at least they and at least there was some challenge. I think that the fact that cars in gta 5 instantly explode if you land them upside down says everything about the design of that game - no fun allowed. I think GTA 4 did literally everything except for the shooting better than GTA 5, and SA did better than both of them in some areas like scope, variety, sense of freedom, and multiplayer (with mods). Both SA and GTA4 had fun, enjoyable driving physics although they were quite different. Both allowed for skill improvment and just basic joy of driving.
Not hyped at all with 6 because of how poor I think 5 was, and how much they have milked it, I doubt they will change much of the things i didnt like about it for 6.´

the small japanese cars in 4 were a joy to drive. i think almost all cars were fun to drive in SA and 4 except for the most low tier slow ones. the bicylcing in gta sa was really fun especially after u got ur bike skill up
>Favorite radio station?
k-dst was the most memorable for me but i think gta 3 through 4 all had great soundtracks. that was yet another thing that was disappointing about gta 5 btw lol
>Favorite weapon?
not sure i guess gta was never about the weapons for me. i loved the rocket launcher in gta 4 and how it had actual propulsion physics, and could as a result fly in all kinds of ways depending on how you fired it, if you angled it down at the ground you could almost kinda like bounce it, try it. the helicopters in that game also had propulsion physics, it was so good, is like kicking dead whales down the beach that they removed it for 5
>Hopes and fears for GTAVI (if/when it comes out)?
hope they return to form but i dont think they will so im not getting emotionally invested in it. also im kind of tired of ganster stories to be honest so even if i would enjoy the gameplay i probably wouldnt enjoy the narrative unless they did something like gta 4 and made it about some kind of theme instead of the gansterism itself.

OP here. So, GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition is on the way. There's no release date but they say it'll be coming out later this year. There are also no video or screenshots of what these remastered versions of the games even look like (yet), though there's talk of them looking like modded versions of the original games. Personally, my expectations for this are very low. With everything that's been going on with Rockstar and Take Two recently (prominent figures leaving the company, the current state of GTAO and RDO, Rockstar and Take Two's treatment of the modding community), I don't see The Definitive Edition being anything more than a lazy attempt at cashing in on nostalgia. Of course, Rockstar can surprise me by totally revamping these games and addressing issues that are nearly two decades old, but I'm not holding my breath.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x7zr1onxfU
Also, they're removing the original games from all digital stores, meaning that the only way you'll be able to get them from now on would be through piracy or tracking down physical copies. So, unless they're already gone, now is a good time to get them if you don't already have them. This is an incredibly scummy move on Rockstar's part, and I believe they're doing it to spite the modding community even more.
Curious to know Lain's thoughts on this. What are your expectations for this upcoming trilogy remaster? Do you have any hopes?

It's funny how games have that easy way of gaming the system
> Most game logic is reusable
> Only thing that needs any updating is the graphics
> So you reuse the code and improve the graphics, adding a bunch of more bugs to the game in the process and slap some new 3D models on it

Another thing is how despite abundance of advances in scripting and availablity of programmers it seems the games dont advance even a little in terms of mechanics that would be trivial to do.
Its sad and pathetic how people can buy into this crap, you know there is a difference between soykaf games and desperation, saying this as a 30+ y gamer and gamedev.

Well there you go. The people who buy into this sort of thing are casuals who don't know or care about games as a medium and just buy the latest thing because all their friends have it, and kids who are too young to know any better.

Yeah its sad how gta became this soykafty kiddy franchise.
The worst part is the games always kept getting worse while the good stuff got dumped along the way.
The newer games are not really fun at all, i cant understand how people enjoy these.
Not to mention there was almost no innovative features in gta 3-5, the useless broken crap in san andreas doesnt count.

Of all GTA clone games my favorite is Bully, developed by who would you guess, Rockstar themselves. It's got a great combination of Dan Houser's writing, comfy San Andreas graphics, lost in time New England town aesthetics, very dense locations filled with detail unlike regular GTA game (you can travel by foot, skate board or bicycle only), and goofy game mechanics justifying it's T rating that curb you running amok.

You forgot to mention Dan Houser leaving Rockstar. I expect them to go the way of Valve: still getting praise for their old releases while making most of their money from online transactions and not releasing anything new that's really worthwhile because all their talent has left the building and there's just a corporate shell left of what their company used to be. We've been seeing this happening to Rockstar for a long time, it pretty much already happened.
The Fin · 2021-10-21 05:44

I've never played Bully, though I want to.
>>5437
>You forgot to mention Dan Houser leaving Rockstar.
>prominent figures leaving the company
lrn2read. Anyway, you have a point. Resting on their laurels while not doing anything worthwhile is working for them. Hell, they've probably made even more money than Valve on GTAO alone. However, it won't change the fact that Rockstar is becoming a shell of what they used to be, kind of like an actual rockstar.
Personally, I'm interested in what Dan Houser and Leslie Benzies are doing next. They've both started their own companies and Benzies has his "Everywhere" project.
Rockstar could do with some serious competition, which would hopefully inspire them to do better with GTA. Saints Row barely rates (and that reboot looks like trash) and most other open-world games that take notes out of the Rockstar playbook fail to deliver the same feeling of playing a GTA game, at least for me.
Jet Black · 2021-10-21 19:38
To be perfectly blunt, I think when they went 3D the series became the kind of game most emblematic of the cancer destroying video games: extremely bloated, overly expensive projects that can't be allowed to fail and must appeal to the lowest common denominator.
The Plague · 2021-10-22 06:54
So, today is the twentieth anniversary of GTAIII. I almost can't believe that it's been twenty years since this game came out. Some of my earliest gaming memories involve playing it, memories I'll treasure forever.
The game itself hasn't aged well. Visually, it looks dated even for the time. Gameplay-wise, it's lacking polish and has many questionable design choices. It's also lacking in content outside of the main and side missions. If GTAIII came out today, I doubt it would receive the acclaim it did back in 2001. Despite all of that, there is no denying that it is a landmark in video game history and one of the most influential video games of all time.
One thing I don't see brought up when discussing GTAIII is the idea of it being a sort of time capsule of the early 2000s. Having grown up in that era, I look back on GTAIII's portrayal of that time with fondness. And, if the early 2000s end up being the new era to feel nostalgic for, I can see there being a new-found interest in video games that capture that time period, with GTAIII being among them.
I hope our grievances with Rockstar don't distract us from celebrating this game. I certainly will never stop loving it, despite its flaws.
In other news, they've dropped another trailer for The Definitive Edition, this time showing off the visuals. The games look pretty much how I expected them to look, though a few of the character models seem off to me. Of course, I still need to know more about how the games actually play and what's been added, removed and changed content-wise.

Here's a list of enhancements for The Definitive Edition:
>A GTAV-style controller layout
>Improved gunplay and targeting controls, with upgraded drive-by controls in GTA: San Andreas
>Updated Weapon and Radio Station selection wheels
>Updated Mini-Maps with enhanced navigation allowing players to set waypoints to destinations
>The ability to immediately restart a failed mission
>Plus new Rockstar Games Social Club Accomplishments for members
>Higher resolution textures from characters to weapons, vehicles to roads, and much more for greater detail
>A completely rebuilt lighting system with enhanced shadows, reflections, and more
>Improved water and weather effects
>Enhanced detail in trees and foliage Increased draw distances to provide a new level of depth and definition
>4K—resolution support with up to 60 FPS performance for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X systems
>NVIDIA DLSS support for PC Touch screen camera zooming, pans and menu selections as well as Gyro aiming for the Nintendo Switch
Personally, I'm glad they're fixing the gunplay and adding the ability to immediately restart a failed mission. Those changes alone will make a world of difference. Let's hope they keep all of the original licensed music in there, too, but I doubt it.

There's so much buzz surrounding the leak that I'm sceptical of almost everything people are saying. As for the leak itself, I'd say that things are coming along nicely. The game is obviously in the rough, early stages of development, but they seem to be building off of the groundwork laid by GTAV and RDR2, which is what I expected. Beyond that, it's far too early to make a definitive statement. I just hope the finished product is good and that what little faith I still have in Rockstar pays off.

With how GTA Online is, Rockstar will probably end up focusing on DLC and prolonging VI instead of ever making another side game again. Chinatown Wars is my favorite game in the entire series and I don't think there's any way it would've been developed if IV and EFLC hadn't reached their conclusions.

It's not going to be as edgy and satirical like it's predecessors. Since there is going to a be a new female protagonist I would to see Rockster go as far to have her to do some kind of OnlyFans mission and fight against hordes of porn addicts. Florida is known for it's porn industry so a mission resolving around it.

i hope they introduce more RPG element to the character creation/levelling and actually populate the world with things to do and find unlike the massive empty holes for maps that they usually have
GTA V's satire is really underappreciated, Micheal and Trevor being reflections of their LA pastiche of a location as well as being inversions of the typical GTA main character.
you could always relate to or at least understand people like Cj, Niko and Tommy irrespective of the atrocities they commit, so having M and T be so unlikable really changes how you think about their actions and how it affects franklin (who is a more typical GTA mc)

Haven't played the series in a while, but I really am beginning to appreciate GTA 4. I'm an immigrant myself and I think they really captured that with Niko without being idiotically woke. It's the little things like that cousin who constantly lies to you, family members always asking for money, getting involved in stupid soykaf because of morons you end up with, and keeping in touch with your parents via internet cafe etc. Also, game is pretty funny and all. The only downside is the radio isn't as good as the earlier games. Overall, my favorite game in the series will always be San Andreas.

I could write an essay on why I like Michael and Trevor as characters and why their utterly dysfunctional relationship is one of my favourites in fiction, but I understand why some people don't like them. It makes me wonder how the main characters in GTAVI are going to be portrayed, especially since they seem to be a romantic couple, which is a concept Rockstar has a history of making fun of.
On a semi-related note, as much as I appreciate Vice City as a setting, a part of me is going to miss GTAV's version of Los Santos and its satire of contemporary L.A. culture. L.A. is a city I'd like to visit in real life and GTAV significantly educated me on what life there is like despite Los Santos being an obvious over-the-top parody. Here's hoping that GTAVI gives us the ability to return to Los Santos, even if only for a few missions.

2 3 and 4 are my fav in the series because it captures the atmosphere of what GTA is about: they are dark, grim, hopeless, miserable, everybody hates you and wants you dead, and you have no friends only business partners.
VC and SA were too colorful and light-hearted to feel like true GTA games but they were spinoffs. unfortunately V and VI brought the light-hearted atmosphere to the main series and that ruined it for me.
