Dead Video Games
Batou · 2020-12-27 05:57
What dead video games do you play lainons? My personal favorite one would be Starmade.
Joe Bloggs · 2020-12-27 06:00
I've played Infiniminer before it was completely abandoned, it was sad seeing it go.
Anonymous · 2020-12-27 06:18
I rarely play it anymore but over the years when I get the urge I download a snes emulator and play NHL Stanley Cup/Super Hockey. Once you get a hang of it it's easy to beat the computer even at the hardest difficulty.

I think the most dead videogame I'm most active on would be Spiral Knights. Its main appeal to me is the fact that it's completely SFW with no abuses of the Lord's name and has gameplay that's engaging enough to keep me preoccupied. The Zelda-Four-Swords idea is nice and it gives me something to do whilst I listen to my podcasts on my computer.
This game could come back to life, it's just that it needs to get rid of the bad feature that killed its playerbase and needs newer updates.

I'd love to hear the story behind its demise; sounds interesting.
Judge Fang · 2020-12-28 19:57
This thread is going to be 98% games that still have active playerbases but don't have a billion players monthly. Dead video games are ones that are proprietary, online only, and the servers are shut down. How can you even play a dead video game if it's dead. Here's an actually dead game I used to play: http://zombiepandemic.com/ but can't any more because it's "dead".
If you don't agree with what I said above here a few games that had lots of players and now don't have as many players:
Battlerite
Heroes of the Storm
CS1.6
Starcraft1/2
Urban Dead
Worms Armageddon
MMOs
TF2
L4D 1/2

But by common uses of the word "dead" on the internet all those games are nowhere near what they used to be. So what does "dead" mean in this thread? Those games are great and I don't consider them dead at all. But many retards do. So can OP tell me what they mean by "dead" and I'll try and give an appropriate answer. I gave one from my version of "dead" and I gave one from a common view of "dead".

I remember playing this back when it was popular. I hear there was some update that killed it but never knew what it was.
It's a shame, I'd love to go back and be able to play it as I remember it.
Joey · 2020-12-29 17:16
>>4164 Lain I've never played Tribes but it seems that hosting private servers is possible (http://wiki.theexiled.pwnageservers.com/Tribes:_Ascend/SDK). If you want I can try and get it working in the weekend and we could try and pool together some people from here to play. I've never played the game before so I'll get fuarrrking stomped but from what I've heard it's great fun.

I consider a "dead" game to be dead when a very small number of people still play it from its peak. In the post's image, I used the "Starmade" game as it has a playerbase of most likely below 20 people now.

Came to post this. Seriously the most fun I've had with a shooter this side of Unreal Tournament '04 and Timesplitters.
Technically you can still play it but last time I tried there was 2 servers open with about 4 people each. We can never go back to the golden days...

It's to be $15 when it's fully released, which it isn't. You can get a free copy of it from their official website at no cost.
Agent Richard Gill · 2021-05-17 19:19
Don't play it, because I can't, but I rarely go a week without wanting to hop on a war of the roses game. Totally offline, won't even let you self host.

Play CPMA, OpenArena, Xonotic, Warsow, and all those other arena FPSes with quake movement to get your go fast fix. Because they're all made for duels you only need one other person and if you do Defrag you can go even faster and don't even need another person.

Crackweed T. Gamer · 2021-07-16 03:05
I used to be an avid warframe player, that game is dying, the devs just kept putting out flop updates and didn't play into the "wonder" aspect of the world it builds enough. Also updates were pretty slow and the community was/is rotting.
What a shame.
Rick Deckard · 2021-07-25 04:43
Worlds Adrift. Was a failed experimental physics MMO where you build ships and fight them, or attempt to cross the stormwalls, and interact with entirely playermade factions.

Lain Iwakura · 2021-09-12 02:12
I really liked territory wars but it was killed and hacked
John Rain · 2021-10-07 23:21
Aliens vs Predator 2 is a fuarrrking dead game, but you can still find like 2 people on a server playing any time of the day.
I think that the reason it's dead is just that it's kinda only fun if you're really good at quake-type games so it's hard to get in to as a newbie since you'll be playing against hardened veterans anytime someone's on.

I occasionally get an urge to play games like pics related but rather than figure out a way, I've decided my quality of life would probably decline measurably if this kind of stuff was at my fingertips. It's probably some kind of midlife crisis manifesting itself.
Tomcat · 2022-08-10 08:14
I remember not too long ago, before I lost all interest in gaming, I went back to the roots of where I started a little over 10 years ago. Got back on the original Gears of War and found a very small player base of dudes that would still get on every now and again. Game even had a server browser all the way back in 2006 on a fuaarrking console at that, no wonder it was still kicking, even if just barely. Playing it again was such a blast. I'd have to wait a while to get a full match, but every now and again I'd make or find a good comp or snipers only king of the hill match with friendly fire on. Such a chill vibe, lotta noobies, some very obvious vets, organic alliances forming, people even still did 1 on 1 duels with parts of the lobby watching!
Just a slight bit of context, but Gears of War has always been my favorite online shooter. The combat system is unlike anything that has ever been made and it was such a big deal in the late 2000s. It put Epic Games on the map before Fortnite was even an idea and was THE Xbox 360 console seller for Microsoft along with the Halo Franchise. Nowadays it's died off a ton. They still make sequels, but the newer community is toxic as hell and the matches aren't nearly as fun as they used to be.
That's what made that whole experience really neat. A lot of the culture surrounding Gears has died off since the third installment in 2011, so seeing it again just as if I was playing it 10 years ago with the same guys was quite refreshing. Eventually tho, I stopped playing that too. There were just too many days where I'd check the servers and see no one on. Too many days where I'd sit there at a menu screen hosting a game, only for no one to join. It was a pretty sad way to end it, but the matches I did get were cherished.
It's kinda fascinating seeing a franchise you grew up with change so much over the years to the point where a new generation of people have adopted it and you, the old breed, slowly dies off. You can see the same thing in games like Halo and Call of Duty. Maybe the thought isn't that extreme, but it blows my mind when I think about it and to witness it happen in real time is kinda surreal.
Armitage · 2022-08-10 09:16

Honestly, I don't like playing games with younger players anymore because they can be so toxic.
The other day I was playing "100% Orange Juice" which is like Mario Party but with cute anime girls and this conversation happened.
Chinese username: "Sorry I don't speak English."
Two other players start making racist jokes about his language and spouting the n-word for the rest of the game.
It used be a very cozy and cuddly game full of role-playing as the characters you were. As for OP, I don't bother since I don't play MMOs anymore and partly for that reason. Nowadays I tend to play games I like often enough that I'm practically burned out and ready to let them go if they kill the servers. Ross Scott has a grest Youtube series complaining about Dead Games and listing as many as he can for posterity that you should watch.

Yea this is the reason why i've largely moved away from multiplayer games in recent years. It's just not worth it if you get on and people are screaming at each other over nothing on mic. Or if they just like to be weird and antagonistic in a for-fun cutesy game like OJ with zero stakes.

It's either toxic edgelords or poisonous censorship squads. They both make games extremely unfun. I remember when people were normal and just talked to each other like normal people. Oh well.
