Physical Gaming Thread

I like collecting carts and disc based games. Eventually they will all break in one way or another. But with the exception of pirating I like to feel like I own the game and can be able to hold it in my hands. I have alot of Steam games but really I just pay to have a license to play indefinitely or if Steam decides I shouldn't have it anymore. What kind of games do you own on disc or cart? I just got a PS3 and been seeking out PlayStation games lately.

>>3360 I thought by physical gaming you meant non-digital games. Those aren't even old games, they're PS3.
Cutter · 2020-07-31 21:40
>>3361 I was referring to all disc based games or other games that you don't have to download to play. Not just old games.

They might not have to break but you'll need to do some research as to why they fall apart and how you can change that.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2020-07-31 22:12
>>3362 I was referring to the part where you said they'll fall apart, the average life span of a game or movie DVD is some 25 years
Project 2501 · 2020-07-31 22:27
>>3364 Because everything degrades with use until it stops working for one reason or another. I never said they were going to break anytime soon. Just that one day it will.
Tank · 2020-07-31 22:27
>>3363 You're right and I will do that.

>>3360 I used to have bulk pc, ps2 and ps3 games on disc until they got stolen like 10 years ago, now I just have my n64 cartridges and a couple of ps2 games left

>>3364 >average life span Yeah, I had a original version of Baldur's Gate 2 on a CD that failed somewhere after 12 years (I got it brand new, and not second hand. Also I think I didn't abuse the CD in any way, it had no big scratches, but the paint from the top just started to fall off and the computer had a hard time reading this disc). I still managed make a backup before it failed permanently but I'm just saying that average may not mean much.

PSP collecting is a lot of fun because the medium is pretty bizarre from an American perspective and there are a lot of gems like Katamari and old ps1 games. There's something futuristic about the psp's ui too. It's iconic in a way that my brain will always associate with a calming optimism
Meddler · 2020-09-27 20:59
Sooner or later a disc will rot out whether you like it or not, I prefer digital because they are more convenient (assuming you are ready to get into heavy IT stuff and backups). Personally I prefer VHS tapes since they last longer and they make a nice collection on your wall, I have some really old times movies and TV shows that are rare (altho I need a vhs player) and some seinfield CD's.
Apoc · 2020-09-27 22:20
>>3360 I used to have much bigger collection, but I gave most of my games to my younger brother. I own only PC, that's why I have mostly just PC games. The only exception is the game Journey, which is Playstation exclusive. I had to add this game to my collection even though I can't play it.

Forgot to mention: The games in the left column are unopened and still sealed.

I started collecting Sega Genesis games a few months ago I recently purchased being Streets of Rage 2 which is good fun, but not a game I could spend a lot of time on. My ultimate goal is to have most of my favorite games from NES, Genesis, Gamecube and PS2 (maybe PS1) and down the road show my kid(s) them the appeal of retro games through physical means and not just emulators as it ruins the charm.

>>3571 I like the UMD format but the UMD drives on the PSP (at least any 3000 version) is total soykaf so I just pirate the ISO's for them and mod the PSP.
Hitomi · 2020-10-02 05:29
>>3572 I understand this. That's why people make backups and I personally find that important. I just don't care for re-releases of old games. Like that Super Mario 3D All Stars soykaf.
BloodCat · 2020-10-02 05:30
>>3573 PC gaming is nice. Unfortunately digital releases are better than the physical copy due to the DRM situation (unless you crack it).
Acid Burn · 2020-10-02 12:45
>>3572 Any quality CD-R/DVD-R is rated and built to last 100-200 years if well taken care of and not overused. Some will rot of course but the medium is a tank overall and anything from the mid 2000s onward should be good for the most part. It's the rewritable variants that are only rated for 25 years. Still, rip everything of course.
