All of these supposedly play psx games if you know what you're doing (the pi zero is hard I'm sure). Which looks the most appealing to you as an emulator console, aside from the fact that some don't emulate the n64? I grew up (poor) in the usa and before androids were a thing always wanted something like a dragonbox pyra, or a gp2x type deal, that sort of thing. Pis are price gouged and hard to set up though, so I made this image listing the main things I see to buy. What do you think? I didn't find all of the specs, but the pi zero and pocketgo should be the lowest, and I don't even know what software the pocketgo has, though it's the cheapest of them all and claims psx emulation cpaablity, amazingly, if true. I'm neet and poor to this day so I can't just collect them all, I only have money to buy one, and have a silly android for now, and a pi zero I never figured out how to get working. I'm tempted to buy that gameboy looking hat, but doubt my intelligence to set it up, and often driver issues stress me out to the point I just can't imagine fixing a pi to be like these consoles, and the pre-burned images are usually 404'd, the links the sellers show. So, I made this image of the current main ones with corresponding prices. Most are just androids with nice hardware attached, of which depresses me, but then not as much as a pocketgo would, though it's the cheapest and easiest, the pi is the most you'd be able to repair and versatile, but then everyone says get the most expensive one, the one bottom center., despite the one on the left being cheaper and having 4gigs of ram and looking very fun to hold like a psx controller would almost due to it's handles. Do you see any others that are commonly posted on sites to buy? I see these contraptions come and go at increasing frequency every year and the retroflag case is uprising with it claiming no soldering is required. Then psx on it is too, but then I recall gp2x had very bad hardware in comparison and nearly played psx well, so maybe it's actually bad considering it's difficulty, retropie's. Androids are so easy in comarison, and they have mupen64plus too, epsxe as well, etc, what's the point if the dead center one is 100ish and can do what the pi can? Do you think the dead center is the best, or is it fake, going to break? Which one looks the most fun assuming none of them are bad? I only make 400 usd per year tops, sometimes zero. Generally 100-200.
tl;dr: What are you thoughts, the pros and cons, of these devices for emulation, or even other things such as ebook reading going as a plus, while cross referencing price and durability? Did you buy such things? Is there a favorite?

*Technically I got it working, the pi zero, but not as well as it could to the point of playing psx games as others did.

Just get a psp, jeez. It runs psx games natively. I got my 2k for $35 with a case, travel charger and a genuine 16 gig memory stick.
If you don't like the controls - get a psp go and use it with a dualshock.
If you need to scratch your fiddling with electronics balls - get a 2k or 3k and mod the second analog in it.
All these android quote emulator consoles unquote suck ass. Even psp emulates retro consoles better. The only thing it doesn't do is n64.

They say natively but it's still the psp being an emulator with psx pretty sure. It has some chip the ps1 had so it emulates easier or something due to sharing (ic/cpu?) chip architecture or some such, but isn't the same. And yes, I had a phat psp back in the day I hacked with lumines the second, and it was neat with all it's homebrew but it's emulators weren't that great, from what I recall. I'd like to think we've improved since gp2x tier phat psp days. Then again, other than androids running linux's mupen64plus, I guess they didn't. That makes me want to get one of the androids, but there's actually suddenly very many that aren't super expensive anymore in console form. They used to be sold out. I didn't even list all from other sites, that's just amazon's list. Q400 I also heard about, and others I can't recall. Also, you know technically psp did have an n64 emulator called Daedalus? I had tons of apps, yes it was garbage. The skies were red rather than blue and link had only ocarinas for items.
Some of those up there have tv-out, of which is super neat. Psp didn't.
By the way, as a neet I only get amazon gift cards every year, no other income. i doubt I could get a cheap phat psps, then also hack it again. I'd need to also buy the lumines II again, or actually fail at it and brick it. Sounds scary, so I avoid it as hard as messing with the pi zero, but that's different because you can't break it doing that. Well, I could melt it by overlcocking it messing with the config file, but not brick it when you can just use whatever sd you want and keep on flashing it when it breaks rather than an entire embedded system when it breaks. the pi is the fixable, but hardest to use. The psp might be the cheapest, but I doubt it's emulation is that great. I think the androids are dystopian spy machines, but not all of those up there are connected to a satellite, so it kind of takes the willies away from androids when they're not connected. Like tablets. I've used those for gaming a lot, but they're not handheld really and just had it on a table in front of me, or hanging above my head, of which is problematic for traveling around. I hate going outside, but honestly this console will go into my go-bag. I assume I can charge it with my 5v solar panels, most of these small things seem to be that. The psp isn't, and doesn't charge through a usb port. Makes it problematic for me/travel for that reason. If you're really 'out there' then you'd want to charging access to be universal. Perhaps I could get better equipment, but then it's too much to carry on foot.
I actually gave my psp away. They're old and dying by now and I doubt I'd want the new one, prices and all. I was happy just with some tiny netbook with xp on it, that's why I gave it away. Now days windows is desgusting, so it google, the tineiest tablets are generally very expensive if win7 or more often than not win10, of which is bloated spyware I hear, so I end up wanting to leave behind google products, but never adjusted to linux, and windows is dead. None up there run winxp, of which I'd prefer, so I figure they're all not what I want. If it weren't for the blue/yellow/white one having only half a gig of ram, 512 or whatever, I'd want that one, but yeah. It even comes in different space sizes. 128, 32, 64, so I'd get 32. My roms only total 10 gig for the psx, and 2 gig for all other roms. Perhaps less because 500mb of that is books. All of them can read txt files I think, even homebrew on the psp allowed for that, and I think the pocketgo might, of which is the cheapest, but I'd miss the two Zelda's from the n64 too much if I just ran around with the pocketgo. Also, that reminds me that pocketchip is a thing, but the controls are bad looking and I doubt I'd set it up correctly, even though it's hardware is akin to a zero. I was tempted to list that, it's on amazon too, for like 90.
I wish I could collect them all in a tiny breifcase so if one died I'd just switch and export the save files, assuming all systems allow for imports and exports of that. The pocketgo might not. I'm even sure if the psp could import. Probably did. It had file managers and such.
Anyway, meandering over, psp doesn't look better to me than the pcoketgo because the psp is so old it's bound to die just as fast but be more expensive at the same time AND you have to do voodoo on it to get the firmware altered to custom and or downgraded, not specifically in that order. And honestly I'd feel depressed. I don't even have friends anymore and gave my last psp away like ten years ago.
I like the center one's price, it's android, but kinda ugly. The top center I like, but it's half a gig of ram. Pocketgo is some weird bastard of linux, but then again so was android, but developed to the point of being a computer that's user friendly. pi zero needs linux user's mind to use. The 4gig ram one is ugly, huge, read it has bad hardware quality control, very expensive, the common one next to it on the right is waaay expensive, the 150ish one is tempting. I feel like I want the fake ds tier foliding one that's 150, or the gameboyish android top center. The center center is interesting, ugly to me, but then I'm probably just reminded of the psp and how it looks like an android with silly controllers melted to it, of which it's probably exactly that but someone had a plastic molding job to make it look not like that. Clearly it's a phone melted into it's center. It just looks bad. Why don't androids have better attachments to make them look like folding ds devices? It's really a bother. You'd figure it's not that hard to do it. But it'd be tethered to the sat. so I'd hate it anyway. Androids aren't fixable, pis are, psps's aren't, that cheap white thing at the bottom isn't fixable I'm sure realistically, it makes me want to get a pi 4 and hope lakka works with n64 on it, but I doubt it.
>psp tier android
>ds tier android
>gameboy tier android
>pi x with x hat
>something more expensive that won't break and just works
I honestly can't help meandering. It goes with the indecisive personality issue. Sorry. People with money are lucky. I'd just buy all of them and download with faster internet a pre-flashed sd that has gigs and gigs of overkill in rom's. I saw a site that does that so it just works, but it'd take a long time to download and I'd stress over having to delete those games, because, too many to look at with an indecisive personality. I don't know, hence my wanting some other people to talk about them in comparison with each other because I can't buy them and am a bit retardedly add to the point that they all seem about the same tier, minux the n64, like the psp as well. I wonder if the gba emulation improved on psp's. I don't remember having much fun with that 10 approx years ago. Then again, I do recall gba hacks being a thing, the roms needed to be hacked so they could be played on any decent emulator. Otherwise it'd say "this is not a gba" or some such. The roms are probably better now, but I've seen some soykaf in my life with gba rom's and their hacker soykaf. Weird intros, sometimes salty when a guy had his intro removed then he would be all "fuarrrk you guys for removing my introduction". Wanted credit to his ego for fixing pokemon games. Can't recall his name, poor soul. Then again he's smart, I'm not, lucky him to even do such things.
One more thing, I had so many apps on my hacked psp that I actually used to watch anime on youtube, back when that was a thing, and downloaded with the psp on it's own, independtly. Those were the days. The psp is dated by now, but in around 2009 it was super awsome. I even had google earth on it, a star chart, a fake winxp application, tons of stuff. I never even played psx on it, snes, nes, probably failures of hacks of gba, and used it for music, data transfers from the library back to my win98 computer (taught me how to install drivers needing to communicate with the psp like that), and it was indeed very cool, but that was then. Even androids have a hard time ripping off tube sites, and back then everything was in the temporary internet file folder. By the time I even had the thing the psp was already dated, redtube never worked. Just youtube for some reason. And oh yeah, they need special cards for space. I hated that. That's a mark against psp to me. Though it was neat. I remember it's compression software having a rawr and zip joke. "Kittens go zip don't they" showing a kitten for zipping and rawr for extracting, if I recall. Do you recall that application? What was it? Funny and neat, but no thanks for now days. I can't even remember what my psp application names were, the homebrew, nor what firmware I preferred. I just remeber it getting slower and slower and slower until I gave it away. Such a ton of homebrew out there. It didn't even need linux unlike ds. Reading about dslinux was cool but the psp I think had it beat as a form factor computer for general use. I even remember someone making an x86 emulator for the psp. Insane. They booted win9x. The psp was cool, for it's time. I'm past it. Androids killed it so I'm juggling which to buy while wishing I'd get a manually thrown together pi instead.
tl;dr: I don't really feel like getting a psp again for various reasons. I think I'd get the 90 usd top center though. Still someone could blow a hole into my logic and point something obvious out. Blah etc.

What phone do you have? It can probably emulate PSX. I think ePSXe runs on a lot of slower phones, but RetroArch PSX cores are pretty good too (and you can emulate endless systems with it).
Since you probably don't want to use touch controls, there's many bluetooth gamepads available depending on what form factor you want. A lot of regular controllers work with Android and can be attached with a clip, but might be a bit heavy. The 8bitdo Zero 2 is pretty compact and looks good, but I haven't tried it. I have the Flydigi Wee 2T - it's pretty great but a bit pricy at 50 USD. Many similar, cheaper controllers have analog stick deadzones or input lag however, and I haven't encountered either on the Wee. The battery life is also super long, plus it can hold your phone both in portrait and landscape.
The main problem is it comes in "Flymapping" mode, which makes it manually map button inputs to things on the screen. You have to install their (made in China) app to switch to normal bluetooth input, which then works with all emulators. Then the controller is set up for good, and the app can be uninstalled. However, the app requests absurdly intrusive permissions, so I had to use an old empty phone to do this - but it works great now on my main phone. If you don't have an old phone, you could use an app like Shelter to sandbox the app.

Androids being part of a government spy operation and all of that drama makes me want a console instead. Tablets are not usually sat. connected but too big for the controller snap on things. Ergo the appeal of these interesting Chinese handheld consoles. No matter what I choose it'll be price gouged though so I'm really just torturing myself.
I don't want a government controlled spy device in my go-bag though basically. If bombs fall I don't want salty governments shutting down my car nor computer while I'm just sitting in the woods camping. The console version just makes sense taht way you don't have to have a table or similar to hold the device in front of your face if it were tablet. And, tablets break super easy. I'm sure you can rip off the sat. antenna but I'm afraid to break my phone(s) so I haven't tried that.
Also, the leverage/balance will be off if you don't have a real hardware controller, so says I. I can imagine it annoyingly clicking and shifting and even falling off because some srping or rubber ban type thing is holding it loosely together, and you have to take them apart when you put them away rather than just leave it. It takes away novelty, spies on you, reminds you of cellphone culture, allows the government to easier nuke you from space with microwaves or just turn it off to control you, amber alerts (turned mine the fuarrrk off), it's just bleh.
Also, I only really like stand alone emulators. With android phones you have to constantly take the sim out, if you had that (I have never paid for smartphone Internet) and or turn off the wifi to keep ads away. Retroarch is slower than stand alone from what I saw and harder to set up, and I am just used to stand alone going all the way back to win9x days. I like computers, not game consoles and think game consoles should have been a phase, and also hate phones, though I'm sure that sounds contradicting to you it makes sense to me.
If they had windows on them that'd be great but I'm not about to design my own of course. Too pricey, too hard. The retroid pocket I like but is shady the way it's sold, and price gouged, and has no shoulder buttons. Some amazon guy said that he was even locked out of the normal android os, of which is super retarded. So I'm looking at the 150 ds tier one. It's more powerful anyway, if the ads aren't being too tricky, and also protects itself with how the ds tier things fold like way they do. It's still overpriced though. An android of that caliber should be close to 100, not 150 plus shipping. Also, the retroid gameboy tier thing is 4:3 of which has my penis super hard for it, and the volume supposedly, it's keys, can be remapped to be the l and r buttons. It's still lacking a couple of buttons and that'd be awkward to use and it only had .5 g of ram, it'd be MADE for the woods. I see one seller for 90, another has it jumping to 120+ yet in videos from 2020 it's supposed to be 75+ for the cheapest. That's reasonable. These things should't be hitting 100+. So I'm salty. But I already have three controllers, a laptop, two android cellphones, a tablet, (and that pi zero and it's accessories,)when I next get money rather than buy more and more camping equipment I figure I should be a new computer and this would make for a nice change. What I'd REALLY like would be a handheld wii, but I'm not about to go get my masters in advanced starship technology, as previously stated. Also, with tablets, the keyboard is always bad, no combos, disconnecting resets applications, this 'just plug something in externally' thing is so problematic. I have bad memories of bluetooth disconnecting for no reason while playing a game just because it didn't like THAT specific android and the linked to the micro usb ones to were often to disconnect due to the otg cable going bad at the speed of light, thus resetting often the application (though mainly the keyboard did that if I recall).
tl;dr: No like. Attaching things to androids is just bad.

Small devices are easily charged with small solar panels. Alternatively are easily ran by small power banks. 5v here, 5v there, 5 volt a everywhere. Vs some 20ish volt laptop that's too big to even carry with all the other stuff you have that would require SUCH a large bank, and or solar panel, controller, etc, in comparison. *starts raining* better put small device into ziplock bag, vs *starts raining* better soykaf a brick while rain is hitting the keyboard. It'd just be impractical even if you had some waterproof bag or case for the laptop. some large battery, large, suitcase tier sized folding panels, so much easier to have books sized panels and wallet sized batteries rather than some lunchbox battery and you get the point I hope. Walk everywhere and it weighs you down. The initial gobag is 15 lbs without water nor food, then you add this laptop that'll be like 5lbs more, then 10lbs battery, 10lbs solar equipment, 2lb bag, it just gets out of hand fast. A toughbook weighs like 15lbs all on it's own. fuarrrk charging that thing on top of this. Oh, and laptops are what, expensive, and you're in the woods as a bum. You need cheap things, and unless you're getting the windows version of the gpd it's going to be much cheaper than some nice laptop.
tl;dr: the larger the device the more it'd be futile, hence part of the small computer's novelty. Four or so times easier to charge. Four times less weight.

Unless of course you were implying the woods are not safe, in which case that would derail the thread into meanderings about what is or isn't plausibly safe or a in various ways this or that prudent when being in the woods. A dweeb alone in the woods needs entertainment. That's just how humans work. In ancient times they had circuses too. If a hermit you'd have a book or would be writing one. Now days our dopamine spiked raised brains require entertainment. We need it.

Very easy, install the hacked firmware(you can use "kefir" package it has all the soft pre-installed and the instructions are in there too.) Afterwards, you can install all the games via USB (copy-paste game files into the transfer program and wait it to load) or, if you brave, you can setup internet on your switch and install games through wifi.

I used to have a bank account but suntrust threatened me with a monthly fee for not having x amount, a new policy to harm the poor. You needed like 500+, a neet in the usa with no neetbux, even with neetbux, has not 500+ in their account. So I closed it. Then I got a fake visa that had a monthly fee if not used of like 8 usd per month, so I closed that too years ago.
People claim they have better options but I'm too burned out to bother getting another (((account))) of any kind so I use (((amazon))) instead. All items in that image are amazon and amazon prices. Gift cards from them require no bank account from me. I might have had to give them my ssn at some point though, I don't even remember. Might have been a phone number thing from jewgle androids.

Aside from the fact that jewtendo doesn't deserve money now that they took down emuparadise and even sue over free fanmade games the switch is very expensive to simply do retro gaming.
